Dynamical generation of dark solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We numerically investigate the ground state, the Raman-driving dynamics and the nonlinear excitations of a realized spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. Depending on the Raman coupling and the interatomic interactions, three ground-state phases are identified: stripe, plane wave and zero-momentum phases. A narrow parameter regime with coexistence of stripe and zero-momentum or plane wave phases in real space is found. Several sweep progresses across different phases by driving the Raman coupling linearly in time is simulated and the non-equilibrium dynamics of the system in these sweeps are studied. We find kinds of nonlinear excitations, with the particular dark solitons excited in the sweep from the stripe phase to the plane wave or zero-momentum phase within the trap. Moreover, the number and the stability of the dark solitons can be controlled in the driving, which provide a direct and easy way to generate dark solitons and study their dynamics and interaction properties.

Statistics-dependent quantum co-walking of two particles in one-dimensional lattices with nearest-neighbor interactions

We investigate continuous-time quantum walks of two indistinguishable particles [bosons, fermions or hard-core bosons (HCBs)] in one-dimensional lattices with nearest-neighbor interactions. The results for two HCBs are well consistent with the recent experimental observation of two-magnon dynamics [Nature 502, 76 (2013)]. The two interacting particles can undergo independent- and/or co-walking depending on both quantum statistics and interaction strength. Two strongly interacting particles may form a bound state and then co-walk like a single composite particle with statistics-dependent walk speed. Analytical solutions for the scattering and bound states, which appear in the two-particle quantum walks, are obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem in the two-particle Hilbert space. In the context of degenerate perturbation theory, an effective single-particle model for the quantum co-walking is analytically derived and the walk seep of bosons is found to be exactly three times of the ones of fermions/HCBs. Our result paves the way for experimentally exploring quantum statistics via two-particle quantum walks.

Dissipative Quantum Metrology with Spin Cat States

The maximally entangled states are excellent candidates for achieving Heisenberg-limited measurements in ideal quantum metrology, however, they are fragile against dissipation such as particle losses and their achievable precisions may become even worse than the standard quantum limit (SQL). Here we present a robust high-precision measurement scheme via spin cat states (a kind of non-Gaussian entangled states in superposition of two spin coherent states) in the presence of particle losses. The input spin cat states are of excellent robustness against particle losses and their achievable precisions may still beat the SQL. For realistic measurements based upon our scheme, comparing with the population measurement, the parity measurement is more suitable for yielding higher precisions. In phase measurement with realistic dissipative systems of bosons, our scheme provides a robust and realizable way to achieve high-precision measurements beyond the SQL.

Photon-induced sideband transitions in a many-body Landau-Zener process

We investigate the many-body Landau-Zener (LZ) process in a two-site Bose-Hubbard model driven by a time-periodic field. We find that the driving field may induce sideband transitions in addition to the main LZ transitions. These photon-induced sideband transitions are a signature of the photon-assisted tunneling in our many-body LZ process. In the strong interaction regime, we develop an analytical theory for understanding the sideband transitions, which is confirmed by our numerical simulation. Furthermore, we discuss the quantization of the driving field. In the effective model of the quantized driving field, the sideband transitions can be understood as the LZ transitions between states of different "photon" numbers.

Quantum Walks of Two Interacting Particles in One Dimension

We investigate continuous-time quantum walks of two indistinguishable particles (bosons, fermions or hard-core bosons) in one-dimensional lattices with nearest-neighbour interactions. The two interacting particles can undergo independent- and/or co-walking dependent on both quantum statistics and interaction strength. We find that two strongly interacting particles may form a bound state and then co-walk like a single composite particle with statistics-dependent propagation speed. Such an effective single-particle picture of co-walking is analytically derived in the context of degenerate perturbation and the analytical results are well consistent with direct numerical simulation. In addition to implementing universal quantum computation and observing bound states, two-particle quantum walks offer a novel route to detecting quantum statistics. Our theoretical results can be examined in experiments of light propagations in two-dimensional waveguide arrays or spin-impurity dynamics of ultracold atoms in one-dimensional optical lattices.

Pseudo Parity-Time Symmetry in Optical Systems

We introduce a novel concept of the {\em pseudo} parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry in periodically modulated optical systems with balanced gain and loss. We demonstrate that whether the original system is $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric or not, we can manipulate the property of the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry by applying a periodic modulation in such a way that the effective system derived by the high-frequency Floquet method is $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric. If the original system is non-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric, the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry in the effective system will lead to quasi-stationary propagation that can be associated with the \emph{pseudo $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry}. Our results provide a promising approach for manipulating the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry of realistic systems.

Finite-time scaling of dynamic quantum criticality

We develop a theory of finite-time scaling for dynamic quantum criticality by considering the competition among an external time scale, an intrinsic reaction time scale and an imaginary time scale arising respectively from an external driving field, the fluctuations of the competing orders and thermal fluctuations. Through a successful application in determining the critical properties at zero temperature and the solution of real-time Lindblad master equation near a quantum critical point at nonzero temperatures, we show that finite-time scaling offers not only an amenable and systematic approach to detect the dynamic critical properties, but also a unified framework to understand and explore nonequilibrium dynamics of quantum criticality, which shows specificities for open systems.

Analytic study on cold field electron emission from metallic nanowall array

The cold field electron emission from metallic nanowall array is investigated theoretically. Via conformal mapping method, analytic formulas of tunneling barrier, edge field enhancement factor, transmission coefficient, and area emission current density are derived in the semi-classical approximation. The influence of field enhancement effects and screening effects on cold field emission are discussed and the optimal spacing distance between nanowalls for the largest emission current density is found to be a linear function of the height of nanowalls and depends on the applied field.

Field electron emission characteristic of graphene

The field electron emission current from graphene is calculated analytically on a semiclassical model. The unique electronic energy band structure of graphene and the field penetration in the edge from which the electrons emit have been taken into account. The relation between the effective vacuum barrier height and the applied field is obtained. The calculated slope of the Fowler-Nordheim plot of the current-field characteristic is in consistent with existing experiments.

Analytical treatment of cold field electron emission from a nanowall emitter

This paper presents an elementary, approximate analytical treatment of cold field electron emission (CFE) from a classical nanowall. A simple model is used to bring out some of the basic physics of a class of field emitter where quantum confinement effects exist transverse to the emitting direction. A high-level methodology is presented for developing CFE equations more general than the usual Fowler-Nordheim-type (FN-type) equations, and is applied to the classical nanowall. If the nanowall is sufficiently thin, then significant transverse-energy quantization effects occur, and affect the overall form of theoretical CFE equations; also, the tunnelling barrier shape exhibits "fall-off" in the local field value with distance from the surface. A conformal transformation technique is used to derive an analytical expression for the on-axis tunnelling probability.
