AG3D: Learning to Generate 3D Avatars from 2D Image Collections

While progress in 2D generative models of human appearance has been rapid, many applications require 3D avatars that can be animated and rendered. Unfortunately, most existing methods for learning generative models of 3D humans with diverse shape and appearance require 3D training data, which is limited and expensive to acquire. The key to progress is hence to learn generative models of 3D avatars from abundant unstructured 2D image collections. However, learning realistic and complete 3D appearance and geometry in this under-constrained setting remains challenging, especially in the presence of loose clothing such as dresses. In this paper, we propose a new adversarial generative model of realistic 3D people from 2D images. Our method captures shape and deformation of the body and loose clothing by adopting a holistic 3D generator and integrating an efficient and flexible articulation module. To improve realism, we train our model using multiple discriminators while also integrating geometric cues in the form of predicted 2D normal maps. We experimentally find that our method outperforms previous 3D- and articulation-aware methods in terms of geometry and appearance. We validate the effectiveness of our model and the importance of each component via systematic ablation studies.

Downlink and Uplink Cooperative Joint Communication and Sensing

Downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) joint communication and sensing (JCAS) technologies have been individually studied for realizing sensing using DL and UL communication signals, respectively. Since the spatial environment and JCAS channels in the consecutive DL and UL JCAS time slots are generally unchanged, DL and UL JCAS may be jointly designed to achieve better sensing performance. In this paper, we propose a novel DL and UL cooperative (DUC) JCAS scheme, including a unified multiple signal classification (MUSIC)-based JCAS sensing scheme for both DL and UL JCAS and a DUC JCAS fusion method. The unified MUSIC JCAS sensing scheme can accurately estimate AoA, range, and Doppler based on a unified MUSIC-based sensing module. The DUC JCAS fusion method can distinguish between the sensing results of the communication user and other dumb targets. Moreover, by exploiting the channel reciprocity, it can also improve the sensing and channel state information (CSI) estimation accuracy. Extensive simulation results validate the proposed DUC JCAS scheme. It is shown that the minimum location and velocity estimation mean square errors of the proposed DUC JCAS scheme are about 20 dB lower than those of the state-of-the-art separated DL and UL JCAS schemes.

Towards Carbon-Neutral Edge Computing: Greening Edge AI by Harnessing Spot and Future Carbon Markets

Provisioning dynamic machine learning (ML) inference as a service for artificial intelligence (AI) applications of edge devices faces many challenges, including the trade-off among accuracy loss, carbon emission, and unknown future costs. Besides, many governments are launching carbon emission rights (CER) for operators to reduce carbon emissions further to reverse climate change. Facing these challenges, to achieve carbon-aware ML task offloading under limited carbon emission rights thus to achieve green edge AI, we establish a joint ML task offloading and CER purchasing problem, intending to minimize the accuracy loss under the long-term time-averaged cost budget of purchasing the required CER. However, considering the uncertainty of the resource prices, the CER purchasing prices, the carbon intensity of sites, and ML tasks' arrivals, it is hard to decide the optimal policy online over a long-running period time. To overcome this difficulty, we leverage the two-timescale Lyapunov optimization technique, of which the $T$-slot drift-plus-penalty methodology inspires us to propose an online algorithm that purchases CER in multiple timescales (on-preserved in carbon future market and on-demanded in the carbon spot market) and makes decisions about where to offload ML tasks. Considering the NP-hardness of the $T$-slot problems, we further propose the resource-restricted randomized dependent rounding algorithm to help to gain the near-optimal solution with no help of any future information. Our theoretical analysis and extensive simulation results driven by the real carbon intensity trace show the superior performance of the proposed algorithms.

Sensing Performance of Cooperative Joint Sensing-Communication UAV Network

We propose a novel cooperative joint sensing-communication (JSC) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network that can achieve downward-looking detection and transmit detection data simultaneously using the same time and frequency resources by exploiting the beam sharing scheme. The UAV network consists of a UAV that works as a fusion center (FCUAV) and multiple subordinate UAVs (SU). All UAVs fly at the fixed height. FCUAV integrates the sensing data of network and carries out downward-looking detection. SUs carry out downward-looking detection and transmit the sensing data to FCUAV. To achieve the beam sharing scheme, each UAV is equipped with a novel JSC antenna array that is composed of both the sensing subarray (SenA) and the communication subarray (ComA) in order to generate the sensing beam (SenB) and the communication beam (ComB) for detection and communication, respectively. SenB and ComB of each UAV share a total amount of radio power. Because of the spatial orthogonality of communication and sensing, SenB and ComB can be easily formed orthogonally. The upper bound of average cooperative sensing area (UB-ACSA) is defined as the metric to measure the sensing performance, which is related to the mutual sensing interference and the communication capacity. Numerical simulations prove the validity of the theoretical expressions for UB-ACSA of the network. The optimal number of UAVs and the optimal SenB power are identified under the total power constraint.

Code-Division OFDM Joint Communication and Sensing System for 6G Machine-type Communication

The joint communication and sensing (JCS) system can provide higher spectrum efficiency and load-saving for 6G machine-type communication (MTC) applications by merging necessary communication and sensing abilities with unified spectrum and transceivers. In order to suppress the mutual interference between the communication and radar sensing signals to improve the communication reliability and radar sensing accuracy, we propose a novel code-division orthogonal frequency division multiplex (CD-OFDM) JCS MTC system, where MTC users can simultaneously and continuously conduct communication and sensing with each other. {\color{black} We propose a novel CD-OFDM JCS signal and corresponding successive-interference-cancellation (SIC) based signal processing technique that obtains code-division multiplex (CDM) gain, which is compatible with the prevalent orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) communication system.} To model the unified JCS signal transmission and reception process, we propose a novel unified JCS channel model. Finally, the simulation and numerical results are shown to verify the feasibility of the CD-OFDM JCS MTC system {\color{black} and the error propagation performance}. We show that the CD-OFDM JCS MTC system can achieve not only more reliable communication but also comparably robust radar sensing compared with the precedent OFDM JCS system, especially in low signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) regime.

Dually Enhanced Propensity Score Estimation in Sequential Recommendation

Sequential recommender systems train their models based on a large amount of implicit user feedback data and may be subject to biases when users are systematically under/over-exposed to certain items. Unbiased learning based on inverse propensity scores (IPS), which estimate the probability of observing a user-item pair given the historical information, has been proposed to address the issue. In these methods, propensity score estimation is usually limited to the view of item, that is, treating the feedback data as sequences of items that interacted with the users. However, the feedback data can also be treated from the view of user, as the sequences of users that interact with the items. Moreover, the two views can jointly enhance the propensity score estimation. Inspired by the observation, we propose to estimate the propensity scores from the views of user and item, called Dually Enhanced Propensity Score Estimation (DEPS). Specifically, given a target user-item pair and the corresponding item and user interaction sequences, DEPS firstly constructs a time-aware causal graph to represent the user-item observational probability. According to the graph, two complementary propensity scores are estimated from the views of item and user, respectively, based on the same set of user feedback data. Finally, two transformers are designed to make the final preference prediction. Theoretical analysis showed the unbiasedness and variance of DEPS. Experimental results on three publicly available and an industrial datasets demonstrated that DEPS can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art baselines.

A Unified Network Equilibrium for E-Hailing Platform Operation and Customer Mode Choice

This paper aims to combine both economic and network user equilibrium for ride-sourcing and ride-pooling services, while endogenously optimizing the pooling sequence of two origin-destination (OD) pairs. With the growing popularity of ride-sourcing and ride-pooling services provided by transportation network companies (TNC), there lacks a theoretical network equilibrium model that accounts for the emerging ride-pooling service, due to the challenge in enumerating all possible combinations of OD pairs pooling and sequencing. This paper proposes a unified network equilibrium framework that integrates three modules, including travelers' modal choice between e-pooling and e-solo services, e-platforms' decision on vehicle dispatching and driver-passenger matching, and network congestion. To facilitate the representation of vehicle and passenger OD flows and pooling options, a layered OD graph is created encompassing ride-sourcing and ride-pooling services over origins and destination nodes. Numerical examples are performed on both small and large road networks to demonstrate the efficiency of our model. The proposed equilibrium framework can efficiently assist policymakers and urban planners to evaluate the impact of TNCs on traffic congestion, and also help TNCs with pricing and fleet sizing optimization.

REASONER: An Explainable Recommendation Dataset with Multi-aspect Real User Labeled Ground Truths Towards more Measurable Explainable Recommendation

Explainable recommendation has attracted much attention from the industry and academic communities. It has shown great potential for improving the recommendation persuasiveness, informativeness and user satisfaction. Despite a lot of promising explainable recommender models have been proposed in the past few years, the evaluation strategies of these models suffer from several limitations. For example, the explanation ground truths are not labeled by real users, the explanations are mostly evaluated based on only one aspect and the evaluation strategies can be hard to unify. To alleviate the above problems, we propose to build an explainable recommendation dataset with multi-aspect real user labeled ground truths. In specific, we firstly develop a video recommendation platform, where a series of questions around the recommendation explainability are carefully designed. Then, we recruit about 3000 users with different backgrounds to use the system, and collect their behaviors and feedback to our questions. In this paper, we detail the construction process of our dataset and also provide extensive analysis on its characteristics. In addition, we develop a library, where ten well-known explainable recommender models are implemented in a unified framework. Based on this library, we build several benchmarks for different explainable recommendation tasks. At last, we present many new opportunities brought by our dataset, which are expected to shed some new lights to the explainable recommendation field. Our dataset, library and the related documents have been released at https://reasoner2023.github.io/.

The least distance eigenvalue of the complements of graphs of diameter greater than three

Suppose $G$ is a connected simple graph with the vertex set $V( G ) = \{ v_1,v_2,\cdots ,v_n \} $. Let $d_G( v_i,v_j ) $ be the least distance between $v_i$ and $v_j$ in $G$. Then the distance matrix of $G$ is $D( G ) =( d_{ij} ) _{n\times n}$, where $d_{ij}=d_G( v_i,v_j ) $. Since $D( G )$ is a non-negative real symmetric matrix, its eigenvalues can be arranged as $λ_1(G)\ge λ_2(G)\ge \cdots \ge λ_n(G)$, where eigenvalue $λ_n(G)$ is called the least distance eigenvalue of $G$. In this paper we determine the unique graph whose least distance eigenvalue attains maximum among all complements of graphs of diameter greater than three.

Homophily-oriented Heterogeneous Graph Rewiring

With the rapid development of the World Wide Web (WWW), heterogeneous graphs (HG) have explosive growth. Recently, heterogeneous graph neural network (HGNN) has shown great potential in learning on HG. Current studies of HGNN mainly focus on some HGs with strong homophily properties (nodes connected by meta-path tend to have the same labels), while few discussions are made in those that are less homophilous. Recently, there have been many works on homogeneous graphs with heterophily. However, due to heterogeneity, it is non-trivial to extend their approach to deal with HGs with heterophily. In this work, based on empirical observations, we propose a meta-path-induced metric to measure the homophily degree of a HG. We also find that current HGNNs may have degenerated performance when handling HGs with less homophilous properties. Thus it is essential to increase the generalization ability of HGNNs on non-homophilous HGs. To this end, we propose HDHGR, a homophily-oriented deep heterogeneous graph rewiring approach that modifies the HG structure to increase the performance of HGNN. We theoretically verify HDHGR. In addition, experiments on real-world HGs demonstrate the effectiveness of HDHGR, which brings at most more than 10% relative gain.

Vid2Avatar: 3D Avatar Reconstruction from Videos in the Wild via Self-supervised Scene Decomposition

We present Vid2Avatar, a method to learn human avatars from monocular in-the-wild videos. Reconstructing humans that move naturally from monocular in-the-wild videos is difficult. Solving it requires accurately separating humans from arbitrary backgrounds. Moreover, it requires reconstructing detailed 3D surface from short video sequences, making it even more challenging. Despite these challenges, our method does not require any groundtruth supervision or priors extracted from large datasets of clothed human scans, nor do we rely on any external segmentation modules. Instead, it solves the tasks of scene decomposition and surface reconstruction directly in 3D by modeling both the human and the background in the scene jointly, parameterized via two separate neural fields. Specifically, we define a temporally consistent human representation in canonical space and formulate a global optimization over the background model, the canonical human shape and texture, and per-frame human pose parameters. A coarse-to-fine sampling strategy for volume rendering and novel objectives are introduced for a clean separation of dynamic human and static background, yielding detailed and robust 3D human geometry reconstructions. We evaluate our methods on publicly available datasets and show improvements over prior art.

Joint Communication, Sensing and Computation enabled 6G Intelligent Machine System

With the rapid development of the smart city, high-level autonomous driving, intelligent manufacturing, and etc., the stringent industrial-level requirements of the extremely low latency and high reliability for communication and new trends for sub-centimeter sensing have transcended the abilities of 5G and call for the development of 6G. Based on analyzing the function design of the communication, sensing and the emerging intelligent computation systems, we propose the joint communication, sensing and computation (JCSC) framework for 6G intelligent machine-type communication (IMTC) network to realize low latency and high reliability of communication, highly accurate sensing and fast environment adaption. In the proposed JCSC framework, the communication, sensing and computation abilities cooperate to benefit each other by utilizing the unified hardware, resource and protocol design. Sensing information is exploited as priori information to enhance the reliability and latency performance of wireless communication and to optimize the resource utilization of the communication network, which further improves the distributed computation and cooperative sensing ability. We propose the promising enabling technologies such as joint communication and sensing (JCS) technique, JCSC wireless networking techniques and intelligent computation techniques. We also summarize the challenges to achieve the JCSC framework. Then, we introduce the intelligent flexible manufacturing as a typical use case of the IMTC with JCSC framework, where the enabling technologies are deployed. Finally, we present the simulation results to prove the feasibility of the JCSC framework by evaluating the JCS waveform, the JCSC enabled neighbor discovery (ND) and medium access control (MAC).

Counterfactual Explainable Recommendation

By providing explanations for users and system designers to facilitate better understanding and decision making, explainable recommendation has been an important research problem. In this paper, we propose Counterfactual Explainable Recommendation (CountER), which takes the insights of counterfactual reasoning from causal inference for explainable recommendation. CountER is able to formulate the complexity and the strength of explanations, and it adopts a counterfactual learning framework to seek simple (low complexity) and effective (high strength) explanations for the model decision. Technically, for each item recommended to each user, CountER formulates a joint optimization problem to generate minimal changes on the item aspects so as to create a counterfactual item, such that the recommendation decision on the counterfactual item is reversed. These altered aspects constitute the explanation of why the original item is recommended. The counterfactual explanation helps both the users for better understanding and the system designers for better model debugging. Another contribution of the work is the evaluation of explainable recommendation, which has been a challenging task. Fortunately, counterfactual explanations are very suitable for standard quantitative evaluation. To measure the explanation quality, we design two types of evaluation metrics, one from user's perspective (i.e. why the user likes the item), and the other from model's perspective (i.e. why the item is recommended by the model). We apply our counterfactual learning algorithm on a black-box recommender system and evaluate the generated explanations on five real-world datasets. Results show that our model generates more accurate and effective explanations than state-of-the-art explainable recommendation models.

Robust Mid-Pass Filtering Graph Convolutional Networks

Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) are currently the most promising paradigm for dealing with graph-structure data, while recent studies have also shown that GCNs are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Thus developing GCN models that are robust to such attacks become a hot research topic. However, the structural purification learning-based or robustness constraints-based defense GCN methods are usually designed for specific data or attacks, and introduce additional objective that is not for classification. Extra training overhead is also required in their design. To address these challenges, we conduct in-depth explorations on mid-frequency signals on graphs and propose a simple yet effective Mid-pass filter GCN (Mid-GCN). Theoretical analyses guarantee the robustness of signals through the mid-pass filter, and we also shed light on the properties of different frequency signals under adversarial attacks. Extensive experiments on six benchmark graph data further verify the effectiveness of our designed Mid-GCN in node classification accuracy compared to state-of-the-art GCNs under various adversarial attack strategies.

Task Placement and Resource Allocation for Edge Machine Learning: A GNN-based Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Paradigm

Machine learning (ML) tasks are one of the major workloads in today's edge computing networks. Existing edge-cloud schedulers allocate the requested amounts of resources to each task, falling short of best utilizing the limited edge resources for ML tasks. This paper proposes TapFinger, a distributed scheduler for edge clusters that minimizes the total completion time of ML tasks through co-optimizing task placement and fine-grained multi-resource allocation. To learn the tasks' uncertain resource sensitivity and enable distributed scheduling, we adopt multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) and propose several techniques to make it efficient, including a heterogeneous graph attention network as the MARL backbone, a tailored task selection phase in the actor network, and the integration of Bayes' theorem and masking schemes. We first implement a single-task scheduling version, which schedules at most one task each time. Then we generalize to the multi-task scheduling case, in which a sequence of tasks is scheduled simultaneously. Our design can mitigate the expanded decision space and yield fast convergence to optimal scheduling solutions. Extensive experiments using synthetic and test-bed ML task traces show that TapFinger can achieve up to 54.9% reduction in the average task completion time and improve resource efficiency as compared to state-of-the-art schedulers.

Real-Time High-Resolution Pedestrian Detection in Crowded Scenes via Parallel Edge Offloading

To identify dense and small-size pedestrians in surveillance systems, high-resolution cameras are widely deployed, where high-resolution images are captured and delivered to off-the-shelf pedestrian detection models. However, given the highly computation-intensive workload brought by the high resolution, the resource-constrained cameras fail to afford accurate inference in real time. To address that, we propose Hode, an offloaded video analytic framework that utilizes multiple edge nodes in proximity to expedite pedestrian detection with high-resolution inputs. Specifically, Hode can intelligently split high-resolution images into respective regions and then offload them to distributed edge nodes to perform pedestrian detection in parallel. A spatio-temporal flow filtering method is designed to enable context-aware region partitioning, as well as a DRL-based scheduling algorithm to allow accuracy-aware load balance among heterogeneous edge nodes. Extensive evaluation results using realistic prototypes show that Hode can achieve up to 2.01% speedup with very mild accuracy loss.

HiFlash: Communication-Efficient Hierarchical Federated Learning with Adaptive Staleness Control and Heterogeneity-aware Client-Edge Association

Federated learning (FL) is a promising paradigm that enables collaboratively learning a shared model across massive clients while keeping the training data locally. However, for many existing FL systems, clients need to frequently exchange model parameters of large data size with the remote cloud server directly via wide-area networks (WAN), leading to significant communication overhead and long transmission time. To mitigate the communication bottleneck, we resort to the hierarchical federated learning paradigm of HiFL, which reaps the benefits of mobile edge computing and combines synchronous client-edge model aggregation and asynchronous edge-cloud model aggregation together to greatly reduce the traffic volumes of WAN transmissions. Specifically, we first analyze the convergence bound of HiFL theoretically and identify the key controllable factors for model performance improvement. We then advocate an enhanced design of HiFlash by innovatively integrating deep reinforcement learning based adaptive staleness control and heterogeneity-aware client-edge association strategy to boost the system efficiency and mitigate the staleness effect without compromising model accuracy. Extensive experiments corroborate the superior performance of HiFlash in model accuracy, communication reduction, and system efficiency.

Superconductivity in an Orbital-reoriented SnAs Square Lattice: a Case Study of Li0.6Sn2As2 and NaSnAs

Searching for functional square lattices in layered superconductor systems offers an explicit clue to modify the electron behavior and find exotic properties. The trigonal SnAs3 structural units in SnAs-based systems are relatively conformable to distortion, which provides the possibility to achieve structurally topological transformation and higher superconducting transition temperatures. In the present work, the functional As square lattice was realized and activated in Li0.6Sn2As2 and NaSnAs through a topotactic structural transformation of trigonal SnAs3 to square SnAs4 under pressure, resulting in a record-high Tc among all synthesized SnAs-based compounds. Meanwhile, the conductive channel transfers from the out-of-plane pz orbital to the in-plane px+py orbitals, facilitating electron hopping within the square 2D lattice and boosting the superconductivity. The reorientation of p-orbital following a directed local structure transformation provides an effective strategy to modify layered superconductors.
