A Game-Theoretic Taxonomy of Visual Concepts in DNNs

In this paper, we rethink how a DNN encodes visual concepts of different complexities from a new perspective, i.e. the game-theoretic multi-order interactions between pixels in an image. Beyond the categorical taxonomy of objects and the cognitive taxonomy of textures and shapes, we provide a new taxonomy of visual concepts, which helps us interpret the encoding of shapes and textures, in terms of concept complexities. In this way, based on multi-order interactions, we find three distinctive signal-processing behaviors of DNNs encoding textures. Besides, we also discover the flexibility for a DNN to encode shapes is lower than the flexibility of encoding textures. Furthermore, we analyze how DNNs encode outlier samples, and explore the impacts of network architectures on interactions. Additionally, we clarify the crucial role of the multi-order interactions in real-world applications. The code will be released when the paper is accepted.

Cellular Automata Simulation of Grain Growth of Powder Metallurgy Nickel-Based Superalloy

Primary γ' phase instead of carbides and borides plays an important role in suppressing grain growth during solution at 1433K of FGH98 nickel-based polycrystalline alloys. Results illustrate that as-fabricated FGH98 has equiaxed grain structure and after heat treatment, grains remain equiaxed but grow larger. In order to clarify the effects of the size and volume fraction of the primary γ' phase on the grain growth during heat treatment, this paper establish a 2D Cellular Automata (CA) model based on the thermal activation and the lowest energy principle. The CA results are compared with the experimental results and show a good fit with an error less than 10%. Grain growth kinetics are depicted and simulations in real time for various sizes and volume fractions of primary γ' particles work out well with the Zener relation. The coefficient n value in Zener relation is theoretically calculated and its minimum value is 0.23 when the radius of primary γ' is 2.8μm.

Building Interpretable Interaction Trees for Deep NLP Models

This paper proposes a method to disentangle and quantify interactions among words that are encoded inside a DNN for natural language processing. We construct a tree to encode salient interactions extracted by the DNN. Six metrics are proposed to analyze properties of interactions between constituents in a sentence. The interaction is defined based on Shapley values of words, which are considered as an unbiased estimation of word contributions to the network prediction. Our method is used to quantify word interactions encoded inside the BERT, ELMo, LSTM, CNN, and Transformer networks. Experimental results have provided a new perspective to understand these DNNs, and have demonstrated the effectiveness of our method.

Volume properties and rigidity on self-expanders of mean curvature flow

In this paper, we mainly study immersed self-expander hypersurfaces in Euclidean space whose mean curvatures have some linear growth controls. We discuss the volume growths and the finiteness of the weighted volumes. We prove some theorems that characterize the hyperplanes through the origin as self-expanders. We estimate upper bound of the bottom of the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian. We also give the upper and lower bounds for the bottom of the spectrum of the $L$-stability operator and discuss the $L$-stability of some special self-expanders. Besides, we prove that the surfaces $Γ\times\mathbb{R}$ with the product metric are the only complete self-expander surfaces immersed in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with constant scalar curvature, where $Γ$ is a complete self-expander curve (properly) immersed in $\mathbb{R}^2$.

Rotation-Equivariant Neural Networks for Privacy Protection

In order to prevent leaking input information from intermediate-layer features, this paper proposes a method to revise the traditional neural network into the rotation-equivariant neural network (RENN). Compared to the traditional neural network, the RENN uses d-ary vectors/tensors as features, in which each element is a d-ary number. These d-ary features can be rotated (analogous to the rotation of a d-dimensional vector) with a random angle as the encryption process. Input information is hidden in this target phase of d-ary features for attribute obfuscation. Even if attackers have obtained network parameters and intermediate-layer features, they cannot extract input information without knowing the target phase. Hence, the input privacy can be effectively protected by the RENN. Besides, the output accuracy of RENNs only degrades mildly compared to traditional neural networks, and the computational cost is significantly less than the homomorphic encryption.

Volume growth estimates for Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein manifolds

In this article, we provide some volume growth estimates for complete noncompact gradient Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein manifolds similar to the classical results by Bishop, Calabi and Yau for complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We prove a sharp volume growth estimate for complete noncompact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton. Moreover, we provide upper bound volume growth estimates for complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ=0.$ In addition, we prove that geodesic balls of complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ<0$ and $μ\leq 0$ have at most exponential volume growth.

S3Library: Automatically Eliminating C/C++ Buffer Overflow using Compatible Safer Libraries

Annex K of C11, bounds-checking interfaces, recently introduced a set of alternative functions to mitigate buffer overflows, primarily those caused by string/memory functions. However, poor compatibility limits their adoption. Failure oblivious computing can eliminate the possibility that an attacker can exploit memory errors to corrupt the address space and significantly increase the availability of systems. In this paper, we present S3Library (Saturation-Memory-Access Safer String Library), which is compatible with the standard C library in terms of function signature. Our technique automatically replaces unsafe deprecated memory/string functions with safer versions that perform bounds checking and eliminate buffer overflows via boundless memory. S3Library employs MinFat, a very compact pointer representation following the Less is More principle, to encode metadata into unused upper bits within pointers. In addition, S3Library utilizes Saturation Memory Access to eliminate illegal memory accesses into boundless padding area. Even if an out-of-bounds access is made, the fault program will not be interrupted. We implement our scheme within the LLVM framework on X86-64 and evaluate our approach on correctness, security, runtime performance and availability.

Saturation Memory Access: Mitigating Memory Spatial Errors without Terminating Programs

Memory spatial errors, i.e., buffer overflow vulnerabilities, have been a well-known issue in computer security for a long time and remain one of the root causes of exploitable vulnerabilities. Most of the existing mitigation tools adopt a fail-stop strategy to protect programs from intrusions, which means the victim program will be terminated upon detecting a memory safety violation. Unfortunately, the fail-stop strategy harms the availability of software. In this paper, we propose Saturation Memory Access (SMA), a memory spatial error mitigation mechanism that prevents out-of-bounds access without terminating a program. SMA is based on a key observation that developers generally do not rely on out-of-bounds accesses to implement program logic. SMA modifies dynamic memory allocators and adds paddings to objects to form an enlarged object boundary. By dynamically correcting all the out-of-bounds accesses to operate on the enlarged protecting boundaries, SMA can tolerate out-of-bounds accesses. For the sake of compatibility, we chose tagged pointers to record the boundary metadata of a memory object in the pointer itself, and correct the address upon detecting out-of-bounds access. We have implemented the prototype of SMA on LLVM 10.0. Our results show that our compiler enables the programs to execute successfully through buffer overflow attacks. Experiments on MiBench show that our prototype incurs an overhead of 78\%. Further optimizations would require ISA supports.

Explaining Knowledge Distillation by Quantifying the Knowledge

This paper presents a method to interpret the success of knowledge distillation by quantifying and analyzing task-relevant and task-irrelevant visual concepts that are encoded in intermediate layers of a deep neural network (DNN). More specifically, three hypotheses are proposed as follows. 1. Knowledge distillation makes the DNN learn more visual concepts than learning from raw data. 2. Knowledge distillation ensures that the DNN is prone to learning various visual concepts simultaneously. Whereas, in the scenario of learning from raw data, the DNN learns visual concepts sequentially. 3. Knowledge distillation yields more stable optimization directions than learning from raw data. Accordingly, we design three types of mathematical metrics to evaluate feature representations of the DNN. In experiments, we diagnosed various DNNs, and above hypotheses were verified.

DangKiller: Eliminating Dangling Pointers Efficiently via Implicit Identifier

Use-After-Free vulnerabilities, allowing the attacker to access unintended memory via dangling pointers, are more threatening. However, most detection schemes can only detect dangling pointers and invalid them, but not provide a tolerance mechanism to repair the errors at runtime. Also, these techniques obtain and manage the metadata inefficiently with complex structures and too much scan (sweep). The goal of this paper is to use compiler instrumentation to eliminate dangling pointers automatically and efficiently. In this paper, we observe that most techniques lack accurate efficient pointer graph metadata maintaining methods, so they need to scan the log to reduce the redundancy and sweep the whole address space to find dangling pointers. Also, they lack a direct, efficiently obtaining metadata approach. The key insight of this paper is that a unique identifier can be used as a key to a hash or direct-map algorithm. Thus, this paper maintains the same implicit identifier with each memory object and its corresponding referent. Associating the unique ID with metadata for memory objects, obtaining and managing the pointer graph metadata can be efficiently. Therefore, with the delayed free technique adopted into C/C++, we present the DangKiller as a novel and lightweight dangling pointer elimination solution. We first demonstrate the MinFat Pointer, which can calculate unique implicit ID for each object and pointer quickly, and use hash algorithm to obtain metadata. Secondly, we propose the Log Cache and Log Compression mechanism based on the ID to decrease the redundancy of dangling pointer candidates. Coupled with the Address Tagging architecture on an ARM64 system, our experiments show that the DangKiller can eliminate use-after-free vulnerabilities at only 11% and 3% runtime overheads for the SPEC CPU2006 and 2017 benchmarks respectively, except for unique cases.

Coalesced TLB to Exploit Diverse Contiguity of Memory Mapping

The miss rate of TLB is crucial to the performance of address translation for virtual memory. To reduce the TLB misses, improving translation coverage of TLB has been an primary approach. Many previous works focus on coalescing multiple contiguously mapped pages of the memory mapping into a modified entry, which function well if the assumed contiguity of memory mapping is given. Unfortunately, scenarios of applications are complicated and the produced contiguity diversify. To gain better performance of translation, in this paper, we first introduce a complex but prevalent type of contiguity, mixed contiguity. Then we propose a HW-SW hybrid coalesced TLB structure which works well on all observed types of contiguity including this type. In our evaluation, the proposed scheme, K-bit Aligned TLB, outperforms the state-of-the-art work by reducing at lease 27% TLB misses on average over it using 16 benchmarks.

Initialization for Network Embedding: A Graph Partition Approach

Network embedding has been intensively studied in the literature and widely used in various applications, such as link prediction and node classification. While previous work focus on the design of new algorithms or are tailored for various problem settings, the discussion of initialization strategies in the learning process is often missed. In this work, we address this important issue of initialization for network embedding that could dramatically improve the performance of the algorithms on both effectiveness and efficiency. Specifically, we first exploit the graph partition technique that divides the graph into several disjoint subsets, and then construct an abstract graph based on the partitions. We obtain the initialization of the embedding for each node in the graph by computing the network embedding on the abstract graph, which is much smaller than the input graph, and then propagating the embedding among the nodes in the input graph. With extensive experiments on various datasets, we demonstrate that our initialization technique significantly improves the performance of the state-of-the-art algorithms on the evaluations of link prediction and node classification by up to 7.76% and 8.74% respectively. Besides, we show that the technique of initialization reduces the running time of the state-of-the-arts by at least 20%.

Learning High-order Structural and Attribute information by Knowledge Graph Attention Networks for Enhancing Knowledge Graph Embedding

The goal of representation learning of knowledge graph is to encode both entities and relations into a low-dimensional embedding spaces. Many recent works have demonstrated the benefits of knowledge graph embedding on knowledge graph completion task, such as relation extraction. However, we observe that: 1) existing method just take direct relations between entities into consideration and fails to express high-order structural relationship between entities; 2) these methods just leverage relation triples of KGs while ignoring a large number of attribute triples that encoding rich semantic information. To overcome these limitations, this paper propose a novel knowledge graph embedding method, named KANE, which is inspired by the recent developments of graph convolutional networks (GCN). KANE can capture both high-order structural and attribute information of KGs in an efficient, explicit and unified manner under the graph convolutional networks framework. Empirical results on three datasets show that KANE significantly outperforms seven state-of-arts methods. Further analysis verify the efficiency of our method and the benefits brought by the attention mechanism.

Volume growth of complete submanifolds in gradient Ricci Solitons with bounded weighted mean curvature

In this article, we study properly immersed complete noncompact submanifolds in a complete shrinking gradient Ricci soliton with weighted mean curvature vector bounded in norm. We prove that such a submanifold must have polynomial volume growth under some mild assumption on the potential function. On the other hand, if the ambient manifold is of bounded geometry, we prove that such a submanifold must have at least linear volume growth. In particular, we show that a properly immersed complete noncompact hypersurface in the Euclidean space with bounded Gaussian weighted mean curvature must have polynomial volume growth and at least linear volume growth.

An Attention-Based Approach for Single Image Super Resolution

The main challenge of single image super resolution (SISR) is the recovery of high frequency details such as tiny textures. However, most of the state-of-the-art methods lack specific modules to identify high frequency areas, causing the output image to be blurred. We propose an attention-based approach to give a discrimination between texture areas and smooth areas. After the positions of high frequency details are located, high frequency compensation is carried out. This approach can incorporate with previously proposed SISR networks. By providing high frequency enhancement, better performance and visual effect are achieved. We also propose our own SISR network composed of DenseRes blocks. The block provides an effective way to combine the low level features and high level features. Extensive benchmark evaluation shows that our proposed method achieves significant improvement over the state-of-the-art works in SISR.

Properties on n-dimensional convolution for image deconvolution

Convolution system is linear and time invariant, and can describe the optical imaging process. Based on convolution system, many deconvolution techniques have been developed for optical image analysis, such as boosting the space resolution of optical images, image denoising, image enhancement and so on. Here, we gave properties on N-dimensional convolution. By using these properties, we proposed image deconvolution method. This method uses a series of convolution operations to deconvolute image. We demonstrated that the method has the similar deconvolution results to the state-of-art method. The core calculation of the proposed method is image convolution, and thus our method can easily be integrated into GPU mode for large-scale image deconvolution.

Spectral properties and rigidity for self-expanding solutions of the mean curvature flows

In this paper, we study self-expanders for mean curvature flows. First we show the discreteness of the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian on them. Next we give a universal lower bound of the bottom of the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian and prove that this lower bound is achieved if and only if the self-expander is the Euclidian subspace through the origin. Further, for self-expanders of codimension $1$, we prove an inequality between the bottom of the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian and the bottom of the spectrum of weighted stability operator and that the hyperplane through the origin is the unique self-expander where the equality holds. Also we prove the uniqueness of hyperplane through the origin for mean convex self-expanders under some condition on the square of the norm of the second fundamental form.
