B2X Networks: Joint Design of Communication and Control for Embodied Intelligence

This article proposes the concept of \emph{brain-body-to-everything (B2X)} networks to facilitate the integration of wireless networks and embodied intelligence. In this framework, the \emph{brain} refers to the intelligence functions for reasoning, planning, and decision-making, the \emph{body} denotes the physical embodied agent that senses and acts in the real world, and \emph{X} represents the surrounding ecosystem involved in the brain-body interaction loop. Two B2X architectures with \emph{distributed} and \emph{centralized} brains are introduced to characterize different placements of intelligence across the body, base station, and core network. The uplink and downlink designs of B2X networks are then discussed under a representative base-station-side brain setting. For the uplink, communication is redesigned for B2X state acquisition under event urgency, sensing volume, and simultaneous multi-body access. For the downlink, communication is redesigned to coordinate command delivery and conventional service under shared radio resources. Based on these uplink and downlink considerations, a communication-control Pareto boundary is further used to characterize the loop-level trade-off between wireless transmission performance and control quality in B2X networks. Finally, several open research problems are discussed to guide future B2X network design.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access Enabled Probabilistic Semantic Communication in UAV Networks

This article proposes an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) downlink semantic communication framework, where probabilistic knowledge graphs (PKGs) are employed to model user equipment (UE) semantics and decompose semantic information into shared and private components. Leveraging the capability of rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) in addressing such semantic structures, a PKG-assisted RSMA transmission scheme is developed to efficiently deliver multi-user semantic information under severe energy constraints and fast-varying UAV channels. To characterize the strongly coupled energy costs of communication, computation, and flight, a weighted energy minimization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the UAV trajectory, power allocation, beamforming design, and semantic compression ratio. The resulting non-convex problem is efficiently solved using an iterative semantic-aware weighted energy optimization (SWEO) algorithm that integrates Lagrangian dual decomposition and successive convex approximation. Furthermore, a semantic accuracy metric is proposed to quantify the reliability of reconstruction by assigning importance-based weights to informative KG triples. Extensive simulation results verify that the proposed framework achieves superior energy efficiency, enhanced semantic preservation, and consistently better performance than conventional RSMA, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), and space division multiple access (SDMA) schemes in benchmarks across various network parameters.

Center-Fed Pinching Antenna System for Uplink Environment Sensing

A center-fed pinching antenna system (C-PASS)-enabled uplink environment sensing framework is proposed. Through the center-fed framework, doubled degrees of freedom is achieved compared to conventional end-fed PASS. Based on this, we consider an uplink sensing scenario, in which a linear inverse model is developed to reconstruct the environment through signals scattered by the environment object. In the proposed framework, the distance between the feed points for stable separation of the received signals is characterized in closed form. Furthermore, Ziv-Zakai bound (ZZB) expressions for the mean-squared reconstruction error are derived for C-PASS and end-fed PASS. Based on these theoretical results, it can be proved that C-PASS achieves a strictly lower reconstruction error bound than conventional PASS for uplink environment sensing. Finally, numerical results validate the accuracy of the derived ZZB expressions and 1) demonstrate that C-PASS provides more stable separation of the received signals, and 2) confirm the consistent performance advantages of C-PASS.

Agent-Native Wireless Communications: Architecture, Opportunities, and the Road Ahead

Future wireless networks are moving toward autonomous service operation, where network control and resource management need to respond to time-varying radio conditions and evolving service objectives. To address this shift, this article develops an agent-native wireless communication framework that characterizes the interplay between agent intelligence and communication systems. In this framework, the coupling is organized around \emph{agents for communications} and \emph{communications for agents}. For agent-native operation, the architecture is organized around deployable computing infrastructure, programmable open radio access network (O-RAN) software, and controllable communication interfaces. Based on this architecture, \emph{agents for communications} addresses the use of agents in communication-system design and operation, including agent-generated communication software and agent-driven adaptive wireless optimization. On the other side, \emph{communications for agents} addresses wireless service support for agent operation, including network-supported single-agent loops and network-assisted multi-agent coordination. Finally, it outlines promising research directions for measurable, safe, and interoperable deployment of agent-native wireless communications.

Modeling and Analysis for Joint Design of Communication and Control

A unified analytical framework for joint design of communication and control (JDCC) is proposed. Within this framework, communication transmission delay and steady-state control variance are derived as the two fundamental JDCC performance metrics. The Pareto boundary is then established to characterize the optimal communication-control trade-off in JDCC systems. To further obtain closed-form expressions, their performance regions are derived under maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) and zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming. For system reliability evaluation, the communication-only and control-only outage probabilities are first derived. Based on these, the JDCC outage probability is defined to quantify the probability that the communication-delay and control-error requirements cannot be simultaneously satisfied. Its analytical expressions are then derived under both MRT and ZF schemes. Finally, numerical results validate the theoretical results and reveal that: (1) the Pareto boundary characterizes the trade-off frontier and performance limit of JDCC systems and (2) the JDCC reliability is jointly determined by the uplink-downlink closed-loop control and its coupling with communication.

Center-Fed Pinching Antenna System (C-PASS): Modeling, Analysis, and Beamforming Design

A generalized framework for the novel center-fed pinching antenna system (C-PASS) is proposed. Within this framework, closed-form expressions for the degree of freedom (DoF) and power scaling law of the proposed C-PASS are first derived. These theoretical results reveal that the achievable DoF scales linearly with the number of input ports, $M$, and the number of receive antennas, $K$. Furthermore, the derived power scaling laws demonstrate that the C-PASS achieves a power gain of order $\mathcal{O}(P_T M)$, where $P_T$ denotes the transmit power. Based on the proposed C-PASS modeling, a sum-rate maximization problem for the joint optimization of transmit and pinching beamforming is then formulated. To solve this highly coupled non-convex problem, an efficient alternating optimization algorithm is developed. More particularly, the transmit precoding and power splitting ratios are updated via derived closed-form solutions, while the pinching antenna positions and radiation coefficients are optimized using block coordinate descent (BCD) methods. Finally, our numerical results reveal that the single-waveguide C-PASS: 1) achieves superior DoF and power scaling laws compared to the single-waveguide PASS; and 2) outperforms the multi-waveguide PASS in high-attenuation regimes, yielding a substantial gain exceeding $10$ dB.

A Survey of Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS)

The pinching-antenna system (PASS), recently proposed as a flexible-antenna technology, has been regarded as a promising solution for several challenges in next-generation wireless networks. It provides large-scale antenna reconfiguration, establishes stable line-of-sight links, mitigates signal blockage, and exploits near-field advantages through its distinctive architecture. This article aims to present a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in PASS. The fundamental principles of PASS are first discussed, including its hardware architecture, circuit and physical models, and signal models. Several emerging PASS designs, such as segmented waveguide-enabled PASS (SWAN), center-fed PASS (C-PASS), and multi-mode PASS (M-PASS), are subsequently introduced, and their design features are discussed. In addition, the properties and promising applications of PASS for wireless sensing are reviewed. On this basis, recent progress in the performance analysis of PASS for both communications and sensing is surveyed, and the performance gains achieved by PASS are highlighted. Existing research contributions in optimization and machine learning are also summarized, with the practical challenges of beamforming and resource allocation being identified in relation to the unique transmission structure and propagation characteristics of PASS. Finally, several variants of PASS are presented, and key implementation challenges that remain open for future study are discussed.

Center-Fed Pinching Antenna System (C-PASS) Aided Wireless Communications

The novel architecture of the center-fed pinching antenna system (C-PASS) is investigated, where the waveguide-fed signal is divided into two propagation directions through controllable power splitting. By doing so, a doubled degree of freedom (DoF) is achieved compared to conventional PASS. Based on the new designed basic signal model of C-PASS, three practical operating protocols for C-PASS are proposed, namely power splitting (PS), direction switching (DS), and time switching (TS). Then, the sum-rate maximization problem for the joint optimization of transmit and pinching beamforming is formulated for each of the proposed protocols. 1) For PS, the highly coupled non-convex problem is first transformed into a tractable form via the weighted minimum mean square error reformulation and solved using the alternating optimization framework; 2) For DS, the above approach is subsequently extended to solve the mixed-integer constraints inherent for DS via the penalty-based algorithm; 3) For TS, the optimization problem can be decomposed into two subproblems and solved using the similar iterative techniques, while its optimal time allocation ratio is derived in closed form. Finally, numerical results reveal that TS is superior in the low-power regime, while PS and DS achieve significantly higher rates in the high-power regime due to the enhanced DoF.

C-PASS: Center-Fed Pinching Antenna System

A novel architecture of the center-fed pinching antenna system (C-PASS) is proposed. In contrast to the conventional end-fed PASS, signals are fed from the center input ports and propagate towards both sides of the waveguide. By doing so, spatial-multiplexing gain can be achieved in a single waveguide. Based on the proposed C-PASS, closed-form expressions for the degree of freedom (DoF) and power scaling laws are derived. These theoretical results reveal that C-PASS can achieve \emph{twice} the DoF and an additional multiplexing gain of $\mathcal{O}(P_T \ln^4 N/N^2)$ compared to the conventional PASS, where $P_T$ and $N$ represent the transmit power and pinching antenna number, respectively. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate that substantial capacity improvements can be achieved through the enhanced DoF and multiplexing gain of the C-PASS.

The sixth-generation and beyond (B6G) networks are envisioned to support advanced applications that demand high-speed communication, high-precision sensing, and high-performance computing. To underpin this multi-functional evolution, energy- and cost-efficient programmable metasurfaces (PMs) have emerged as a promising technology for dynamically manipulating electromagnetic waves. Dual-Scale Antenna Deployment for Pinching Antenna Systems

A dual-scale deployment (DSD) framework is proposed for pinching antenna systems (PASS), under which four protocols are provided. 1) For the coarse-scale deployment, the pinching antenna (PA) is transferred over a large-scale range at the waveguide level. 2) For the fine-scale deployment, the PA is adjusted with high precision within a small-scale region. By simultaneously optimizing both scales, the proposed DSD framework can unleash the full potential of PA deployment, while maintaining low computational complexity. Based on this framework, we establish a practical power consumption model and derive theoretical energy efficiency expressions for PASS. Then, an energy-efficiency maximization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the transmit precoding, PA radiation power, and dual-scale PA deployment. To solve this non-convex, highly coupled problem, a low-complexity penalty-based alternating optimization algorithm is proposed. Simulation results validate the accuracy of theoretical results and the convergence of the proposed algorithm. It is demonstrated that the proposed DSD framework is highly effective for PASS, delivering about $70\%$ higher energy efficiency than the conventional cell-free architecture and nearly a \emph{twofold} improvement relative to MIMO systems.

RIS-assisted Coverage Enhancement in mmWave Integrated Sensing and Communication Networks

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has emerged as a promising technology to facilitate high-rate communications and super-resolution sensing, particularly operating in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band. However, the vulnerability of mmWave signals to blockages severely impairs ISAC capabilities and coverage. To tackle this, an efficient and low-cost solution is to deploy distributed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to construct virtual links between the base stations (BSs) and users in a controllable fashion. In this paper, we investigate the generalized RIS-assisted mmWave ISAC networks considering the blockage effect, and examine the beneficial impact of RISs on the coverage rate utilizing stochastic geometry. Specifically, taking into account the coupling effect of ISAC dual functions within the same network topology, we derive the conditional coverage probability of ISAC performance for two association cases, based on the proposed beam pattern model and user association policies. Then, the marginal coverage rate is calculated by combining these two cases through the distance-dependent thinning method. Simulation results verify the accuracy of derived theoretical formulations and provide valuable guidelines for the practical network deployment. Specifically, our results indicate the superiority of the RIS deployment with the density of 40 km${}^{-2}$ BSs, and that the joint coverage rate of ISAC performance exhibits potential growth from $67.1\%$ to $92.2\%$ with the deployment of RISs.

Coverage and Rate Analysis for Integrated Sensing and Communication Networks

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is increasingly recognized as a pivotal technology for next-generation cellular networks, offering mutual benefits in both sensing and communication capabilities. This advancement necessitates a re-examination of the fundamental limits within networks where these two functions coexist via shared spectrum and infrastructures. However, traditional stochastic geometry-based performance analyses are confined to either communication or sensing networks separately. This paper bridges this gap by introducing a generalized stochastic geometry framework in ISAC networks. Based on this framework, we define and calculate the coverage and ergodic rate of sensing and communication performance under resource constraints. Then, we shed light on the fundamental limits of ISAC networks by presenting theoretical results for the coverage rate of the unified performance, taking into account the coupling effects of dual functions in coexistence networks. Further, we obtain the analytical formulations for evaluating the ergodic sensing rate constrained by the maximum communication rate, and the ergodic communication rate constrained by the maximum sensing rate. Extensive numerical results validate the accuracy of all theoretical derivations, and also indicate that denser networks significantly enhance ISAC coverage. Specifically, increasing the base station density from $1$ $\text{km}^{-2}$ to $10$ $\text{km}^{-2}$ can boost the ISAC coverage rate from $1.4\%$ to $39.8\%$. Further, results also reveal that with the increase of the constrained sensing rate, the ergodic communication rate improves significantly, but the reverse is not obvious.

Bayesian Learning for Double-RIS Aided ISAC Systems with Superimposed Pilots and Data

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has great potential to improve the performance of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems, especially in scenarios where line-of-sight paths between the base station and users are blocked. However, the spectral efficiency (SE) of RIS-aided ISAC uplink transmissions may be drastically reduced by the heavy burden of pilot overhead for realizing sensing capabilities. In this paper, we tackle this bottleneck by proposing a superimposed symbol scheme, which superimposes sensing pilots onto data symbols over the same time-frequency resources. Specifically, we develop a structure-aware sparse Bayesian learning framework, where decoded data symbols serve as side information to enhance sensing performance and increase SE. To meet the low-latency requirements of emerging ISAC applications, we further propose a low-complexity simultaneous communication and localization algorithm for multiple users. This algorithm employs the unitary approximate message passing in the Bayesian learning framework for initial angle estimate, followed by iterative refinements through reduced-dimension matrix calculations. Moreover, the sparse code multiple access technology is incorporated into this iterative framework for accurate data detection which also facilitates localization. Numerical results show that the proposed superimposed symbol-based scheme empowered by the developed algorithm can achieve centimeter-level localization while attaining up to $96\%$ of the SE of conventional communications without sensing capabilities. Moreover, compared to other typical ISAC schemes, the proposed superimposed symbol scheme can provide an effective throughput improvement over $133\%$.

A Joint Communication and Computation Design for Semantic Wireless Communication with Probability Graph

In this paper, we delve into the challenge of optimizing joint communication and computation for semantic communication over wireless networks using a probability graph framework. In the considered model, the base station (BS) extracts the small-sized compressed semantic information through removing redundant messages based on the stored knowledge base. Specifically, the knowledge base is encapsulated in a probability graph that encapsulates statistical relations. At the user side, the compressed information is accurately deduced using the same probability graph employed by the BS. While this approach introduces an additional computational overhead for semantic information extraction, it significantly curtails communication resource consumption by transmitting concise data. We derive both communication and computation cost models based on the inference process of the probability graph. Building upon these models, we introduce a joint communication and computation resource allocation problem aimed at minimizing the overall energy consumption of the network, while accounting for latency, power, and semantic constraints. To address this problem, we obtain a closed-form solution for transmission power under a fixed semantic compression ratio. Subsequently, we propose an efficient linear search-based algorithm to attain the optimal solution for the considered problem with low computational complexity. Simulation results underscore the effectiveness of our proposed system, showcasing notable improvements compared to conventional non-semantic schemes.

DiffCap: Exploring Continuous Diffusion on Image Captioning

Current image captioning works usually focus on generating descriptions in an autoregressive manner. However, there are limited works that focus on generating descriptions non-autoregressively, which brings more decoding diversity. Inspired by the success of diffusion models on generating natural-looking images, we propose a novel method DiffCap to apply continuous diffusions on image captioning. Unlike image generation where the output is fixed-size and continuous, image description length varies with discrete tokens. Our method transforms discrete tokens in a natural way and applies continuous diffusion on them to successfully fuse extracted image features for diffusion caption generation. Our experiments on COCO dataset demonstrate that our method uses a much simpler structure to achieve comparable results to the previous non-autoregressive works. Apart from quality, an intriguing property of DiffCap is its high diversity during generation, which is missing from many autoregressive models. We believe our method on fusing multimodal features in diffusion language generation will inspire more researches on multimodal language generation tasks for its simplicity and decoding flexibility.

Multiple RISs Assisted Cell-Free Networks With Two-timescale CSI: Performance Analysis and System Design

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can be employed in a cell-free system to create favorable propagation conditions from base stations (BSs) to users via configurable elements. However, prior works on RIS-aided cell-free system designs mainly rely on the instantaneous channel state information (CSI), which may incur substantial overhead due to extremely high dimensions of estimated channels. To mitigate this issue, a low-complexity algorithm via the two-timescale transmission protocol is proposed in this paper, where the joint beamforming at BSs and RISs is facilitated via alternating optimization framework to maximize the average weighted sum-rate. Specifically, the passive beamformers at RISs are optimized through the statistical CSI, and the transmit beamformers at BSs are based on the instantaneous CSI of effective channels. In this manner, a closed-form expression for the achievable weighted sum-rate is derived, which enables the evaluation of the impact of key parameters on system performance. To gain more insights, a special case without line-of-sight (LoS) components is further investigated, where a power gain on the order of $\mathcal{O}(M)$ is achieved, with $M$ being the BS antennas number. Numerical results validate the tightness of our derived analytical expression and show the fast convergence of the proposed algorithm. Findings illustrate that the performance of the proposed algorithm with two-timescale CSI is comparable to that with instantaneous CSI in low or moderate SNR regime. The impact of key system parameters such as the number of RIS elements, CSI settings and Rician factor is also evaluated. Moreover, the remarkable advantages from the adoption of the cell-free paradigm and the deployment of RISs are demonstrated intuitively.
