Shedding Light on Moire Excitons: A First-Principles Perspective

Moire superlattices in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures could trap strongly bonded and long lived interlayer excitons. Assumed to be localized, these moire excitons could form ordered quantum dot arrays, paving the way for novel optoelectronic and quantum information applications. Here we perform first principles simulations to shed light on moire excitons in twisted MoS2/WS2 heterostructures. We provide the direct evidence of localized interlayer moire excitons in vdW heterostructures. The moire potentials are mapped out based on spatial modulations of energy gaps. Nearly flat valence bands are observed in the heterostructures without magic angles. The dependence of spatial localization and binding energy of the moire excitons on the twist angle of the heterostructures is examined. We explore how electric field can be tuned to control the position, polarity, emission energy, and hybridization strength of the moire excitons. We predict that alternating electric fields could modulate the dipole moments of hybridized moire excitons and suppress their diffusion in Moire lattices.

Prediction of possible exotic states in the $η\bar{K}K^*$ system

We investigate the $η\bar{K}K^*$ three body system in order to look for possible $I^G(J^{PC})=0^+(1^{-+})$ exotic states in the framework of the fixed center approximation to the Faddeev equation. We assume the scattering of $η$ on a clusterized system $\bar{K}K^*$, which is known to generate the $f_1(1285)$, or a $\bar{K}$ on a clusterized system $ηK^*$, which is shown to generate the $K_1(1270)$. In the case of the $η$-$(\bar{K}K^*)_{f_1(1285)}$ scattering, we find evidence of a bound state $I^G(J^{PC})=0^+(1^{-+})$ below the $η{f_1(1285)}$ threshold with mass around 1700 MeV and width about 180 MeV. Considering the $\bar{K}$-$(ηK^*)_{K_1(1270)}$ scattering, we obtain a bound state $I(J^{P})=0(1^{-})$ just below the $\bar{K}{K_1(1270)}$ threshold with a mass around 1680 MeV and a width about 160 MeV.

Solving Three-Dimensional Interface Problems with Immersed Finite Elements: A-Priori Error Analysis

In this paper, we develop and analyze a trilinear immersed finite element method for solving three-dimensional elliptic interface problems. The proposed method can be utilized on interface-unfitted meshes such as Cartesian grids consisting of cuboids. We establish the trace and inverse inequalities for trilinear IFE functions for interface elements with arbitrary interface-cutting configuration. Optimal a priori error estimates are rigorously proved in both energy and L2 norms. Numerical examples are provided not only to verify our theoretical results but also to demonstrate the applicability of this IFE method in tackling some real-world 3D interface models.

Learning Contextualized Sentence Representations for Document-Level Neural Machine Translation

Document-level machine translation incorporates inter-sentential dependencies into the translation of a source sentence. In this paper, we propose a new framework to model cross-sentence dependencies by training neural machine translation (NMT) to predict both the target translation and surrounding sentences of a source sentence. By enforcing the NMT model to predict source context, we want the model to learn "contextualized" source sentence representations that capture document-level dependencies on the source side. We further propose two different methods to learn and integrate such contextualized sentence embeddings into NMT: a joint training method that jointly trains an NMT model with the source context prediction model and a pre-training & fine-tuning method that pretrains the source context prediction model on a large-scale monolingual document corpus and then fine-tunes it with the NMT model. Experiments on Chinese-English and English-German translation show that both methods can substantially improve the translation quality over a strong document-level Transformer baseline.

Unifying Specialist Image Embedding into Universal Image Embedding

Deep image embedding provides a way to measure the semantic similarity of two images. It plays a central role in many applications such as image search, face verification, and zero-shot learning. It is desirable to have a universal deep embedding model applicable to various domains of images. However, existing methods mainly rely on training specialist embedding models each of which is applicable to images from a single domain. In this paper, we study an important but unexplored task: how to train a single universal image embedding model to match the performance of several specialists on each specialist's domain. Simply fusing the training data from multiple domains cannot solve this problem because some domains become overfitted sooner when trained together using existing methods. Therefore, we propose to distill the knowledge in multiple specialists into a universal embedding to solve this problem. In contrast to existing embedding distillation methods that distill the absolute distances between images, we transform the absolute distances between images into a probabilistic distribution and minimize the KL-divergence between the distributions of the specialists and the universal embedding. Using several public datasets, we validate that our proposed method accomplishes the goal of universal image embedding.

A Bilinear Partially Penalized Immersed Finite Element Method for Elliptic Interface Problems with Multi-Domains and Triple-Junction Points

In this article, we introduce a new partially penalized immersed finite element method (IFEM) for solving elliptic interface problems with multi-domains and triple-junction points. We construct new IFE functions on elements intersected with multiple interfaces or with triple-junction points to accommodate interface jump conditions. For non-homogeneous flux jump, we enrich the local approximating spaces by adding up to three local flux basis functions. Numerical experiments are carried out to show that both the Lagrange interpolations and the partial penalized IFEM solutions converge optimally in L2 and H1 norms.

$L^2$ estimates and existence theorems for the $\bar{\partial}$ operators in infinite dimensions, I

The classical $L^2$ estimate for the $\overline{\partial}$ operators is a basic tool in complex analysis of several variables. Naturally, it is expected to extend this estimate to infinite dimensional complex analysis, but this is a longstanding unsolved problem, due to the essential difficulty that there exists no nontrivial translation invariance measure in the setting of infinite dimensions. The main purpose in this series of work is to give an affirmative solution to the above problem, and apply the estimates to the solvability of the infinite dimensional $\overline{\partial}$ equations. In this first part, we focus on the simplest case, i.e., $L^2$ estimates and existence theorems for the $\overline{\partial}$ equations on the whole space of $\ell^p$ for $p\in [1,\infty)$. The key of our approach is to introduce a suitable working space, i.e., a Hilbert space for $(s,t)$-forms on $\ell^p$ (for each nonnegative integers $s$ and $t$), and via which we define the $\overline{\partial}$ operator from $(s,t)$-forms to $(s,t+1)$-forms and establish the exactness of these operators, and therefore in this case we solve a problem which has been open for nearly forty years.

Constitutive modeling of the tension-compression behavior of gradient structured materials

Gradient structured (GS) metals processed by severe plastic deformation techniques can be designed to achieve simultaneously high strength and high ductility. Significant kinematic hardening is key to their excellent strain hardening capacity which results in a favorable strength-ductility combination. Unfortunately, no constitutive model has been established to simulate and analyze the characteristic kinematic hardening behavior of GS metal to understand the relationship between their microstructure and macroscopic response. In this work, we developed a deformation-mechanismbased strain gradient plasticity model considering the plasticity heterogeneities from the grain to the sample scale. A back stress model, which accounts for the dependency of dislocation pile-ups on grain size, is established to describe the cyclic deformation properties of GS materials. The established model unified the geometrically necessary dislocations accommodating internal plasticity heterogeneities, the resulting back stress and reversible dislocations during reverse loading into a strain gradient plasticity framework, without introducing excessive numbers of independent material parameters. A finite element implementation of the model quantitatively predicts the uniaxial tensile and tensile-compressive responses of a GS copper bar as well as of a reference sample with homogeneous grain size. It is found that GS copper exhibits enhanced kinematic hardening which results mainly from fine grains in the GS layer and contributes to the considerable ductility of the GS material. The model allows to investigate the mechanical response and optimize the properties of materials with various types of spatially heterogeneous grain microstructures.

A geometric criterion for the existence of chaos based on periodic orbits in continuous-time autonomous systems

A new geometric criterion is derived for the existence of chaos in continuous-time autonomous systems in three-dimensional Euclidean spaces, where a type of Smale horseshoe in a subshift of finite type exists, but the intersection of stable and unstable manifolds of two points on a hyperbolic periodic orbit does not imply the existence of a Smale horseshoe of the same type on cross-sections of these two points. This criterion is based on the existence of a hyperbolic periodic orbit, differing from the classical equilibrium-based Shilnikov criterion and the condition of transversal homoclinic or heteroclinic orbits of Poincaré maps.

Vapor Compression Cycle Control for Automotive Air Conditioning Systems with a Linear Parameter Varying Approach

This paper investigates an output tracking problem for the vapor compression cycle in automotive Air Conditioning (A/C) systems using Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) techniques. Stemming from a recently developed first-principle A/C model, Jacobian linearization is first exploited to develop an LPV-based model that is nonlinearly dependent on time-varying system parameters such as evaporator pressure and superheat temperature. To facilitate the control implementation, a Tensor Product (TP) model transformation is applied to transform the LPV-based model to a TP-type convex polytopic model. LPV controllers are then designed to guarantee system stability, robustness and H-infinity performance. Simulations are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the developed framework.

Secrecy and Covert Communications against UAV Surveillance via Multi-Hop Networks

The deployment of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for surveillance and monitoring gives rise to the confidential information leakage challenge in both civilian and military environments. The security and covert communication problems for a pair of terrestrial nodes against UAV surveillance are considered in this paper. To overcome the information leakage and increase the transmission reliability, a multi-hop relaying strategy is deployed. We aim to optimize the throughput by carefully designing the parameters of the multi-hop network, including the coding rates, transmit power, and required number of hops. In the secure transmission scenario, the expressions of the connection probability and secrecy outage probability of an end-to-end path are derived and the closed-form expressions of the optimal transmit power, transmission and secrecy rates under a fixed number of hops are obtained. In the covert communication problem, under the constraints of the detection error rate and aggregate power, the sub-problem of transmit power allocation is a convex problem and can be solved numerically. Simulation shows the impact of network settings on the transmission performance. The trade-off between secrecy/covertness and efficiency of the multi-hop transmission is discussed which leads to the existence of the optimal number of hops.

Residual-based a posteriori error estimation for immersed finite element methods

In this paper we introduce and analyze the residual-based a posteriori error estimation of the partially penalized immersed finite element method for solving elliptic interface problems. The immersed finite element method can be naturally utilized on interface-unfitted meshes. Our a posteriori error estimate is proved to be both reliable and efficient with reliability constant independent of the location of the interface. Numerical results indicate that the efficiency constant is independent of the interface location and that the error estimation is robust with respect to the coefficient contrast.

Covariance Matrix Estimation from Correlated Sub-Gaussian Samples

This paper studies the problem of estimating a covariance matrix from correlated sub-Gaussian samples. We consider using the correlated sample covariance matrix estimator to approximate the true covariance matrix. We establish non-asymptotic error bounds for this estimator in both real and complex cases. Our theoretical results show that the error bounds are determined by the signal dimension $n$, the sample size $m$ and the correlation pattern $\textbf{B}$. In particular, when the correlation pattern $\textbf{B}$ satisfies $tr(\textbf{B})=m$, $||\textbf{B}||_{F}=O(m^{1/2})$, and $||\textbf{B}||=O(1)$, these results reveal that $O(n)$ samples are sufficient to accurately estimate the covariance matrix from correlated sub-Gaussian samples. Numerical simulations are presented to show the correctness of the theoretical results.

Detecting and Simulating Artifacts in GAN Fake Images

To detect GAN generated images, conventional supervised machine learning algorithms require collection of a number of real and fake images from the targeted GAN model. However, the specific model used by the attacker is often unavailable. To address this, we propose a GAN simulator, AutoGAN, which can simulate the artifacts produced by the common pipeline shared by several popular GAN models. Additionally, we identify a unique artifact caused by the up-sampling component included in the common GAN pipeline. We show theoretically such artifacts are manifested as replications of spectra in the frequency domain and thus propose a classifier model based on the spectrum input, rather than the pixel input. By using the simulated images to train a spectrum based classifier, even without seeing the fake images produced by the targeted GAN model during training, our approach achieves state-of-the-art performances on detecting fake images generated by popular GAN models such as CycleGAN.

Optimal Feedback for Stochastic Linear Quadratic Control and Backward Stochastic Riccati Equations in Infinite Dimensions

It is a longstanding unsolved problem to characterize the optimal feedbacks for general SLQs (i.e., stochastic linear quadratic control problems) with random coefficients in infinite dimensions; while the same problem but in finite dimensions was just addressed in a recent work [36]. This paper is devoted to giving a solution to this problem under some assumptions which can be verified for several interesting concrete models. More precisely, under these assumptions, we establish the equivalence between the existence of optimal feedback operator for infinite dimensional SLQs and the solvability of the corresponding operator-valued, backward stochastic Riccati equations. A key contribution of this work is to introduce a suitable notion of solutions (i.e., transposition solutions to the aforementioned Riccati equations), which plays a crucial role in both the statement and the proof of our main result.

Generation and controllable switching of superradiant and subradiant states in a 10-qubit superconducting circuit

Superradiance and subradiance concerning enhanced and inhibited collective radiation of an ensemble of atoms have been a central topic in quantum optics. However, precise generation and control of these states remain challenging. Here we deterministically generate up to 10-qubit superradiant and 8-qubit subradiant states, each containing a single excitation, in a superconducting quantum circuit with multiple qubits interconnected by a cavity resonator. The $\sqrt{N}$-scaling enhancement of the coupling strength between the superradiant states and the cavity is validated. By applying appropriate phase gate on each qubit, we are able to switch the single collective excitation between superradiant and subradiant states. While the subradiant states containing a single excitation are forbidden from emitting photons, we demonstrate that they can still absorb photons from the resonator. However, for even number of qubits, a singlet state with half of the qubits being excited can neither emit nor absorb photons, which is verified with 4 qubits. This study is a step forward in coherent control of collective radiation and has promising applications in quantum information processing.

UAV-Involved Wireless Physical-Layer Secure Communications: Overview and Research Directions

Due to their flexible deployment and on-demand mobility, small-scale unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are anticipated to be involved in widespread communication applications in the forthcoming fifth-generation (5G) networks. However, the confidentiality of UAV communication applications is vulnerable to security threats due to the broadcast nature and dominant line-of-sight (LoS) channel conditions, and physical-layer security (PLS) technique can be applied for secrecy performance enhancement in such a context. On the other hand, it is also promising to exploit UAVs to cooperatively protect secure communications. This article provides an overview of the recent research efforts on UAV-involved secure communications at the physical layer. We focus on the design of secure transmission schemes according to different roles of UAVs and the optimization of introduced degrees of freedom (DoFs) by the unique characteristics of UAVs. We also propose some future research directions on this topic.

A Practical Marine Wireless Sensor Network Monitoring System Based on LoRa and MQTT

Under the advocacy of the international community, more and more research topics have been built around the ocean. This paper proposed an implementation scheme of marine wireless sensor network monitoring system based on LoRa and MQTT. Different from the traditional network architecture, the system was constructed by combining with two network forms, and according to their respective characteristics, the overall design followed the transition from LoRa to MQTT. We first used LoRa to interconnect the sensor nodes with the gateway, and on this basis, the collected data was sent to the server visualization platform through MQTT, the backend management server would continuously refresh the monitoring page. At the same time, the client could use a browser-based web application to directly access and call data for global maritime information monitoring. In the future, we will further improve the system and optimize the algorithm, to achieve more dimensions and deeper exploration of the underwater world.
