The Third Data Release of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey

The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a wide and deep imaging survey to cover a 5400 deg$^2$ area in the Northern Galactic Cap with the 2.3m Bok telescope using two filters ($g$ and $r$ bands). The Mosaic $z$-band Legacy Survey (MzLS) covers the same area in $z$ band with the 4m Mayall telescope. These two surveys will be used for spectroscopic targeting of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). The BASS survey observations were completed in 2019 March. This paper describes the third data release (DR3) of BASS, which contains the photometric data from all BASS and MzLS observations between 2015 January and 2019 March. The median astrometric precision relative to {\it Gaia} positions is about 17 mas and the median photometric offset relative to the PanSTARRS1 photometry is within 5 mmag. The median $5σ$ AB magnitude depths for point sources are 24.2, 23.6, and 23.0 mag for $g$, $r$, and $z$ bands, respectively. The photometric depth within the survey area is highly homogeneous, with the difference between the 20\% and 80\% depth less than 0.3 mag. The DR3 data, including raw data, calibrated single-epoch images, single-epoch photometric catalogs, stacked images, and co-added photometric catalogs, are publicly accessible at \url{http://batc.bao.ac.cn/BASS/doku.php?id=datarelease:home}.

Site testing campaign for the Large Optical/infrared Telescope of China: Overview

The Large Optical/infrared Telescope (LOT) is a ground-based 12m diameter optical/infrared telescope which is proposed to be built in the western part of China in the next decade. Based on satellite remote sensing data, along with geographical, logistical and political considerations, three candidate sites were chosen for ground-based astronomical performance monitoring. These sites include: Ali in Tibet, Daocheng in Sichuan, and Muztagh Ata in Xinjiang. Up until now, all three sites have continuously collected data for two years. In this paper, we will introduce this site testing campaign, and present its monitoring results obtained during the period between March 2017 and March 2019.

The Nature of the Double Nuclei in the Barred S0 Galaxy IC676

The lenticular galaxy IC 676 is a barred galaxy with double nuclei and active star formation in the central region. In this work we present the long-slit spectroscopy and archival multi-wavelength images to investigate the nature and origin of the double nuclei in IC 676. Through photometric 1D brightness profiles and 2D image decomposition, we show that this galaxy consists of a stellar bar with the length of $\sim$ 2.5 kpc and two Sérsic disks both of which with Sérsic index $\it n \sim$ 1.3. There is probably little or no bulge component assembled in IC 676. The luminosities of the double nuclei are primarily dominated by young stellar populations within the ages of 1-10 Myr. The northern nucleus has stronger star formation activity than the southern one. The surface densities of the star formation rate in the double nuclei are similar to those in starburst galaxies or the circumnuclear star forming regions in spiral galaxies. Each of the double nuclei in IC 676 likely consists of young massive star clusters, which can be resolved as bright knots in the HST high resolution image. Our results suggest that IC 676 likely has a complex formation and evolutionary history. The secular processes driven by the stellar bar and external accretion may dominate the formation and evolution of its double nuclei. This indicates that the secular evolution involving the internal and external drivers may have an important contribution for the evolution of lenticular galaxies.

A catalog of galaxy clusters identified from SCUSS, SDSS, and unWISE

This paper presents the identification of galaxy clusters from the photometric redshift catalog based on three imaging surveys of SCUSS, SDSS, and unWISE. By applying a fast clustering algorithm, we obtain a total of 19,610 clusters in the redshift range of $0.05 < z < 0.65$ over a sky area of about 3,700 deg$^2$ in the south Galactic gap. Monte Carlo simulations show that the false detection rate is about 8.9\%. The redshift uncertainty is estimated to be about 0.013. The mass and richness of detected clusters are derived through the calibration based on the measurements of X-ray emission and Sunyaev--Zel'dovich effect.

The Mass-Metallicity Relation at $z\sim0.8$: Redshift Evolution and Parameter Dependency

The spectra of emission-line galaxies (ELGs) from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) of the Sloan Digit Sky Survey (SDSS) are used to study the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) at $z\sim0.8$. The selected sample contains about 180,000 massive star-forming galaxies with $0.6 < z < 1.05$ and $9 < {\rm log}(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) < 12$. The spectra are stacked in bins of different parameters including redshift, stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), specific star formation rate (sSFR), half-light radius, mass density, and optical color. The average MZR at $z\sim0.83$ has a downward evolution in the MZR from local to high-redshift universe, which is consistent with previous works. At a specified stellar mass, galaxies with higher SFR/sSFR and larger half-light radius have systematically lower metallicity. This behavior is reversed for galaxies with larger mass density and optical color. Among the above physical parameters, the MZR has the most significant dependency on SFR. Our galaxy sample at $0.6<z<1.05$ approximately follows the fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) in the local universe, although the sample inhomogeneity and incompleteness might have effect on our MZR and FMR.

Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies and diagram automorphisms of affine Kac-Moody algebras

For a diagram automorphism of an affine Kac-Moody algebra such that the folded diagram is still an affine Dynkin diagram, we show that the associated Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy also admits an induced automorphism. Then we show how to obtain the Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy associated to the affine Kac-Moody algebra that corresponds to the folded Dynkin diagram from the invariant sub-hierarchy of the original Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy.

STA: Adversarial Attacks on Siamese Trackers

Recently, the majority of visual trackers adopt Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) as their backbone to achieve high tracking accuracy. However, less attention has been paid to the potential adversarial threats brought by CNN, including Siamese network. In this paper, we first analyze the existing vulnerabilities in Siamese trackers and propose the requirements for a successful adversarial attack. On this basis, we formulate the adversarial generation problem and propose an end-to-end pipeline to generate a perturbed texture map for the 3D object that causes the trackers to fail. Finally, we conduct thorough experiments to verify the effectiveness of our algorithm. Experiment results show that adversarial examples generated by our algorithm can successfully lower the tracking accuracy of victim trackers and even make them drift off. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to generate 3D adversarial examples on visual trackers.

Characterization of a double Time-Of-Flight detector system for accurate velocity measurement in a storage ring using laser beams

The Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) is a powerful tool for mass measurements of exotic nuclei with half-lives as short as several tens of micro-seconds in storage rings. In order to improve the mass resolving power while preserving the acceptance of the storage ring, the IMS with two Time-Of-Flight (TOF) detectors has been implemented at the storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou, China. Additional velocity information beside the revolution time in the ring can be obtained for each of the stored ions by using the double TOF detector system. In this paper, we introduced a new method of using a 658 nm laser range finder and a short-pulsed ultra-violet laser to directly measure the distance and time delay difference between the two TOF detectors which were installed inside the $10^{-11}$ mbar vacuum chambers. The results showed that the distance between the two ultra-thin carbon foils of the two TOF detectors was ranging from 18032.5 mm to 18035.0 mm over a measurable area of 20$\times$20 mm$^2$. Given the measured distance, the time delay difference which comes with signal cable length difference between the two TOF detectors was measured to be $Δt_{delay1-2}=99$(26) ps. The new method has enabled us to use the speed of light in vacuum to calibrate the velocity of stored ions in the ring. The velocity resolution of the current double TOF detector system at CSRe was deduced to be $σ(v)/v=4.4\times 10^{-4}$ for laser light, mainly limited by the time resolution of the TOF detectors.

Overview of the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys

The DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys are a combination of three public projects (the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey, the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey, and the Mayall z-band Legacy Survey) that will jointly image approximately 14,000 deg^2 of the extragalactic sky visible from the northern hemisphere in three optical bands (g, r, and z) using telescopes at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The combined survey footprint is split into two contiguous areas by the Galactic plane. The optical imaging is conducted using a unique strategy of dynamically adjusting the exposure times and pointing selection during observing that results in a survey of nearly uniform depth. In addition to calibrated images, the project is delivering a catalog, constructed by using a probabilistic inference-based approach to estimate source shapes and brightnesses. The catalog includes photometry from the grz optical bands and from four mid-infrared bands (at 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 micorons) observed by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite during its full operational lifetime. The project plans two public data releases each year. All the software used to generate the catalogs is also released with the data. This paper provides an overview of the Legacy Surveys project.

Observations of A Fast-Expanding and UV-Bright Type Ia Supernova SN 2013gs

In this paper, we present extensive optical and ultraviolet (UV) observations of the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2013gs discovered during the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey. The photometric observations in the optical show that the light curves of SN 2013gs is similar to that of normal SNe Ia, with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{B}$ = $-$19.25 $\pm$ 0.15 mag and a post-maximum decline rate $Δ$m$_{15}$(B) = 1.00 $ \pm $ 0.05 mag. \emph{Gehrels Swift} UVOT observations indicate that SN 2013gs shows unusually strong UV emission (especially in the $uvw1$ band) at around the maximum light (M$_{uvw1}$ $\sim$ $-$18.9 mag). The SN is characterized by relatively weak Fe~{\sc ii} {\sc iii} absorptions at $\sim$ 5000Å in the early spectra and a larger expansion velocity ($v_{Si}$ $\sim$ 13,000 km s$^{-1}$ around the maximum light) than the normal-velocity SNe Ia. We discuss the relation between the $uvw1-v$ color and some observables, including Si~{\sc ii} velocity, line strength of Si~{\sc ii} $λ$6355, Fe~{\sc ii}/{\sc iii} lines and $Δm_{15}$(B). Compared to other fast-expanding SNe Ia, SN 2013gs exhibits Si and Fe absorption lines with similar strength and bluer $uvw1-v$ color. We briefly discussed the origin of the observed UV dispersion of SNe Ia.

Study of electron emission from 1D nanomaterials under super high field

Photoemission driven by a strong electric field of near-infrared or visible light, referred to as strong-field photoemission, produces attosecond electron pulses that are synchronized to the waveform of the incident light, and this principle lies at the heart of current attosecond technologies. However, full access to strong-field photoemission regimes at near-infrared wavelengths based on solid-state materials is restricted by space-charge screening and material damage at high optical-field strengths, which significantly hampers the realization of predicted attosecond technologies, such as ultra-sensitive optical phase modulation. Here, we demonstrate a new type of strong-field photoemission behaviour with extreme nonlinearity -- photoemission current scales follow a 40th power law of the optical-field strength, making use of sub-nanometric carbon nanotubes and 800 nm pulses. As a result, the total photoemission current depends on the carrier-envelope phase with a greatly improved photoemission current modulation depth of up to 100%, which has not previously been achieved. Time-dependent density functional calculations reveal the completely new behaviour of the optical-field induced tunnelling emission process directly from the valence band of the carbon nanotubes, which is an indication of full access to a strong-field photoemission regime. Furthermore, the nonlinear dynamics are observed to be tunable by changing the binding energy of the valence-band-maximum, as confirmed by Simpleman model calculations. We believe that such extreme nonlinear photoemission from nanotips offers a new means of producing extreme temporal-spatial resolved electron pulses. These results additionally provide a new design philosophy for attosecond electronics and optics by making use of tunable band structures in nanomaterials.

Mass - metallicity relation and fundamental metallicity relation of metal-poor star-forming galaxies at $0.6<z<0.9$ from the eBOSS survey

The stellar mass-metallicity relation ($M_* - Z$, MZR) indicates that the metallicities of galaxies increase with increasing stellar masses. The fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) suggests that the galaxies with higher star formation rates (SFRs) tend to have lower metallicities for a given stellar mass. To examine whether the MZR and FMR still hold at poorer metallicities and higher redshifts, we compile a sample of 35 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $0.6<z<0.9$ using the public spectral database ($\rm v5\_10\_0$) of emission-line galaxies from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). These galaxies are identified for their significant auroral $\rm [OIII]\lambda4363$ emission line ($\rm S/N \geq 3$). With the electronic temperature metallicity calibration, we find nine SFGs are extremely metal-poor galaxies with $\rm 12 + log(O/H) \leq 7.69 \ (1/10 \ Z_\odot)$. The metallicity of the most metal-deficient galaxy is $7.35\pm 0.09$ (about 1/20 $Z_{\odot}$). Compared with the SFGs with normal metallicities in local and high redshift universe, our metal-poor SFGs have more than ten times higher SFRs at a fixed stellar mass. We create a new mass -- SFR relation for these metal-poor galaxies at $0.6<z<0.9$. Due to the higher SFRs and younger stellar ages, our metal-poor SFGs deviate from the MZR and FMR in the local universe toward lower metallicities, confirming the existence of FMR, as well as the cosmic evolution of MZR and FMR with redshift.

A Bi-layered Parallel Training Architecture for Large-scale Convolutional Neural Networks

Benefitting from large-scale training datasets and the complex training network, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are widely applied in various fields with high accuracy. However, the training process of CNNs is very time-consuming, where large amounts of training samples and iterative operations are required to obtain high-quality weight parameters. In this paper, we focus on the time-consuming training process of large-scale CNNs and propose a Bi-layered Parallel Training (BPT-CNN) architecture in distributed computing environments. BPT-CNN consists of two main components: (a) an outer-layer parallel training for multiple CNN subnetworks on separate data subsets, and (b) an inner-layer parallel training for each subnetwork. In the outer-layer parallelism, we address critical issues of distributed and parallel computing, including data communication, synchronization, and workload balance. A heterogeneous-aware Incremental Data Partitioning and Allocation (IDPA) strategy is proposed, where large-scale training datasets are partitioned and allocated to the computing nodes in batches according to their computing power. To minimize the synchronization waiting during the global weight update process, an Asynchronous Global Weight Update (AGWU) strategy is proposed. In the inner-layer parallelism, we further accelerate the training process for each CNN subnetwork on each computer, where computation steps of convolutional layer and the local weight training are parallelized based on task-parallelism. We introduce task decomposition and scheduling strategies with the objectives of thread-level load balancing and minimum waiting time for critical paths. Extensive experimental results indicate that the proposed BPT-CNN effectively improves the training performance of CNNs while maintaining the accuracy.

The Function Transformation Omics - Funomics

There are no two identical leaves in the world, so how to find effective markers or features to distinguish them is an important issue. Function transformation, such as f(x,y) and f(x,y,z), can transform two, three, or multiple input/observation variables (in biology, it generally refers to the observed/measured value of biomarkers, biological characteristics, or other indicators) into a new output variable (new characteristics or indicators). This provided us a chance to re-cognize objective things or relationships beyond the original measurements. For example, Body Mass Index, which transform weight and high into a new indicator BMI=x/y^2 (where x is weight and y is high), is commonly used in to gauge obesity. Here, we proposed a new system, Funomics (Function Transformation Omics), for understanding the world in a different perspective. Funome can be understood as a set of math functions consist of basic elementary functions (such as power functions and exponential functions) and basic mathematical operations (such as addition, subtraction). By scanning the whole Funome, researchers can identify some special functions (called handsome functions) which can generate the novel important output variable (characteristics or indicators). We also start "the Funome project" to develop novel methods, function library and analysis software for Funome studies. The Funome project will accelerate the discovery of new useful indicators or characteristics, will improve the utilization efficiency of directly measured data, and will enhance our ability to understand the world. The analysis tools and data resources about the Funome project can be found gradually at http://www.funome.com.

The First Data Release of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey

The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a new wide-field legacy imaging survey in the northern Galactic cap using the 2.3m Bok telescope. The survey will cover about 5400 deg$^2$ in the $g$ and $r$ bands, and the expected 5$σ$ depths (corrected for the Galactic extinction) in the two bands are 24.0 and 23.4 mag, respectively. BASS started observations in January 2015, and has completed about 41% of the whole area as of July 2016. The first data release contains both calibrated images and photometric catalogs obtained in 2015 and 2016. The depths of single-epoch images in the two bands are 23.4 and 22.9 mag, and the full depths of three epochs are about 24.1 and 23.5 mag, respectively.

The Second Data Release of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey

This paper presents the second data release (DR2) of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS). BASS is an imaging survey of about 5400 deg$^2$ in $g$ and $r$ bands using the 2.3 m Bok telescope. DR2 includes the observations as of July 2017 obtained by BASS and Mayall $z$-band Legacy Survey (MzLS). This is our first time to include the MzLS data covering the same area as BASS. BASS and MzLS have respectively completed about 72% and 76% of their observations. The two surveys will be served for the spectroscopic targeting of the upcoming Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. Both BASS and MzLS data are reduced by the same pipeline. We have updated the basic data reduction and photometric methods in DR2. In particular, source detections are performed on stacked images, and photometric measurements are co-added from single-epoch images based on these sources. The median 5$σ$ depths with corrections of the Galactic extinction are 24.05, 23.61, and 23.10 mag for $g$, $r$, and $z$ bands, respectively. The DR2 data products include stacked images, co-added catalogs, and single-epoch images and catalogs. The BASS website (http://batc.bao.ac.cn/BASS/) provides detailed information and links to download the data.

Optical Observations of the Young Type Ic Supernova SN 2014L in M99

We present optical spectroscopic and photometric observations of the nearby type Ic supernova (SN Ic) SN 2014L. This SN was discovered by the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey (TNTS) in the nearby type-Sc spiral galaxy M99 (NGC 4254). Fitting to the early-time light curve indicates that SN 2014L was detected at only a few hours after the shock breakout, and it reached a peak brightness of $M_{\rm V} = -17.73 \pm 0.28$ mag ($L= [2.06\pm 0.50] \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$) approximately 13 days later. SN 2014L shows a close resemblance to SN 2007gr in the photometric evolution, while it shows stronger absorption features of intermediate-mass elements (especially \CaII) in the early-time spectra. Based on simple modeling of the observed light curves, we derived the mass of synthesized $^{56}$Ni as $M_{\rm Ni} = 0.075 \pm 0.025 M_{\odot}$, and the mass and total energy of the ejecta as $M_{\rm ej} = 1.00 \pm 0.20 M_\odot$ and $E_{\rm ej}=1.45\pm0.25$ foe, respectively. Given these typical explosion parameters, the early detection, and the extensive observations, we suggest that SN 2014L could be a template sample for the investigation of SNe Ic.
