Linear optical quantum computation with imperfect entangled photon-pair sources and inefficient non-photon-number-resolving detectors

We propose a scheme for efficient cluster state quantum computation by using imperfect polarization-entangled photon-pair sources, linear optical elements and inefficient non-photon-number-resolving detectors. The efficiency threshold for loss tolerance in our scheme requires the product of source and detector efficiencies should be >1/2 - the best known figure. This figure applies to uncorrelated loss. We further find that the loss threshold is unaffected by correlated loss in the photon pair source. Our approach sheds new light on efficient linear optical quantum computation with imperfect experimental conditions.

Experimental investigation of classical and quantum correlations under decoherence

It is well known that many operations in quantum information processing depend largely on a special kind of quantum correlation, that is, entanglement. However, there are also quantum tasks that display the quantum advantage without entanglement. Distinguishing classical and quantum correlations in quantum systems is therefore of both fundamental and practical importance. In consideration of the unavoidable interaction between correlated systems and the environment, understanding the dynamics of correlations would stimulate great interest. In this study, we investigate the dynamics of different kinds of bipartite correlations in an all-optical experimental setup. The sudden change in behaviour in the decay rates of correlations and their immunity against certain decoherences are shown. Moreover, quantum correlation is observed to be larger than classical correlation, which disproves the early conjecture that classical correlation is always greater than quantum correlation. Our observations may be important for quantum information processing.

Experimental demonstration of photonic entanglement collapse and revival

We demonstrate the collapse and revival features of the entanglement dynamics of different polarization-entangled photon states in a non-Markovian environment. Using an all-optical experimental setup, we show that entanglement can be revived even after it suffers from sudden death. A maximally revived state is shown to violate a Bell's inequality with 4.1 standard deviations which verifies its quantum nature. The revival phenomenon observed in this experiment provides an intriguing perspective on entanglement dynamics.

Experimental characterization of entanglement dynamics in noisy channels

The dynamics of entanglement between two photons with one of them passing through noisy quantum channels is characterized. It is described by a simple factorization law which was first theoretically proposed by Konrad {\it et al.} [Nature Phys., 4, 99 (2008)]. Quantum state tomography process is employed to reconstruct the reduced density matrixes of the final states and the corresponding concurrences are calculated. Good fittings between experimental results and theoretical predictions are found, which imply the validity of the general factorization law in the characterization of entanglement dynamics.

Simple scheme for expanding a polarization-entangled W state by adding one photon

We propose a simple scheme for expanding a polarization-entangled W state. By mixing a single photon and one of the photons in an n-photon W state at a polarization-dependent beam splitter (PDBS), we can obtain an (n+1)-photon W state after post-selection. Our scheme also opens the door for generating n-photon W states using single photons and linear optics.

A scheme for tunable quantum phase gate and effective preparation of graph-state entanglement

A scheme is presented for realizing a quantum phase gate with three-level atoms, solid-state qubits--often called artificial atoms, or ions that share a quantum data bus such as a single mode field in cavity QED system or a collective vibrational state of trapped ions. In this scheme, the conditional phase shift is tunable and controllable via the total effective interaction time. Furthermore, we show that the method can be used for effective preparation of graph-state entanglement, which are important resources for quantum computation, quantum error correction, studies of multiparticle entanglement, fundamental tests of non-locality and decoherence.

Frequency-up conversion and quantum swap gate in an optical cavity with atomic cloud

A scheme is presented for realizing frequency-up conversion and a two-qubit quantum swap gate for intracavity fields. In the scheme, a V-type atomic ensemble prepared in their ground states collectively mediates the interaction between the two cavity modes. Under certain conditions, the cavity-field degree of freedom is decoupled from the atomic degrees of freedom, and the effective coupling strength between the two cavity modes scales up with $\sqrt{N}$ ($N$ is the number of atoms). The numerical simulation shows that the quantum swap gate still has a high fidelity under the influence of the atomic spontaneous emission and the decay of the cavity modes.

Coupled quantum electrodynamics in photonic crystal nanocavities

We show that a scalable photonic crystal nanocavity array, in which single embedded quantum dots are coherently interacting, can perform as an universal single-operation quantum gate. In a passive system, the optical analogue of electromagnetically-induced-transparency is observed. The presence of a single two-level system in the array dramatically controls the spectral lineshapes. When each cavity couples with a two-level system, our scheme achieves two-qubit gate operations with high fidelity and low photon loss, even in the bad cavity limit and with non-ideal detuning and decoherence.

Nonclassicality of quantum excitation of classical coherent fields in thermal environments

The nonclassicality of photon-added coherent fields in the thermal channel is investigated by exploring the volume of the negative part of the Wigner function which reduces with the dissipative time. The Wigner functions become positive when the decay time exceeds a threshold value. For the case of the single photon-added coherent state, we derive the exact threshold values of decay time in the thermal channel. For arbitrary partial negative Wigner distribution function, a generic analytical relation between the mean photon number of heat bath and the threshold value of decay time is presented. Finally, the possible application of SPACSs in quantum computation has been briefly discussed. OCIS codes: 270.0270, 270.2500, 000.5490

Analogue to multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in all-optical drop-filter systems

We theoretically study a parallel optical configuration which includes N periodically coupled whispering-gallery-mode resonators. The model shows an obvious effect which has a direct analogy with the phenomenon of multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in quantum systems. The numerical simulations illuminate that the frequency transparency windows are sharp and highly transparent. We also briefly discuss the experimental feasibility of the current scheme in two practical systems, microrings and microdisks.

Nonclassicality of quantum excitation of classical coherent field in photon loss channel

We investigate the nonclassicality of photon-added coherent states in the photon loss channel by exploring the entanglement potential and negative Wigner distribution. The total negative probability defined by the absolute value of the integral of the Wigner function over the negative distribution region reduces with the increase of decay time. The total negative probability and the entanglement potential of pure photon-added coherent states exhibit the similar dependence on the beam intensity. The reduce of the total negative probability is consistent with the behavior of entanglement potential for the dissipative single-photon-added coherent state at short decay times.

The non-deterministic quantum logic operation and teleportation of a vacuum and single photon superposition state via parametric amplifiers

We firstly present an all-optical scheme to implement the non-deterministic quantum logic operation of Knill, Laflamme and Milburn (Nature, 409, 46-52(2001)). In our scheme, squeezed vacuum state is acted as auxiliary state instead of single photon resources. Then we demonstrate that same setup can be used to teleport a superposition of vacuum and single photon state of the form $α|0>+β|1>$ and a superposition of vacuum and single polarized photon state of the form $α|0>+β|H>+γ|V>$.
