Engineering energy-time entanglement from resonance fluorescence

Resonance fluorescence from a coherently driven two-level emitter is a minimal quantum optical field that combines phase coherence with single-photon-level nonlinearity. Here we show that it can be engineered, using only passive linear interferometry, into energy-time entanglement. By injecting resonance fluorescence from a single quantum dot into an asymmetric Mach--Zehnder interferometer operated near destructive interference of the single-photon component, we generate an output field whose coincidence statistics are dominated by the simultaneous two-photon contribution |2> and the temporally separated photon-pair contribution |11>. In a Franson geometry, these two sectors are resolved on the coincidence-delay axis, and both exhibit high-visibility nonlocal interference fringes and violate the Clauser--Horne--Shimony--Holt Bell inequality. Our results reveal a general route for engineering entanglement from resonance fluorescence using passive optics.

Bell Inequality Violation with Vacuum-One-Photon Number Superposition States

Entanglement is a central resource in quantum technologies, and the realization of photonic entanglement necessarily relies on interaction with matter. Resonance fluorescence (RF), originating from the coherent interaction between a driving field and a two-level system, plays a pivotal role in quantum optics. Here, we demonstrate a novel route to entanglement generation based on RF from a single quantum dot. Rather than relying on generation of multiphoton states, our approach directly exploits vacuum-one-photon number superposition states created under resonant excitation. By delocalizing this superposition via a beam splitter, we realize time-bin entanglement and observe a clear violation of the Clauser-Horn-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality using Franson-type interferometry. Our scheme removes the need for multiphoton generation, simplifies the experimental requirements, and establishes a scalable pathway toward solid-state entangled photon sources.

Coherence in resonance fluorescence

Resonance fluorescence of a two-level emitter displays persistently anti-bunching irrespective of the excitation intensity, but inherits the driving laser's linewidth under weak monochromatic excitation. These properties are commonly explained in terms of two disjoined pictures, i.e., the emitter's single photon saturation or passively scattering light. Here, we propose a unified model that treats all fluorescence photons as spontaneous emission, one at a time, and can explain simultaneously both the spectral and correlation properties of the emission. We theoretically derive the excitation power dependencies, measurable at the single-photon incidence level, of the first-order coherence of the whole resonance fluorescence and super-bunching of the spectrally filtered, followed by experimental confirmation on a semiconductor quantum dot micro-pillar device. Furthermore, our model explains peculiar coincidence bunching observed in phase-dependent two-photon interference experiments. Our work provides an intuitive understanding of coherent light-matter interaction and may stimulate new applications.

Topological spin-orbit-coupled fermions beyond rotating wave approximation

The realization of spin-orbit-coupled ultracold gases has driven a wide range of researches and is typically based on the rotating wave approximation (RWA). By neglecting the counter-rotating terms, RWA characterizes a single near-resonant spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a two-level system. Here, we propose and experimentally realize a new scheme for achieving a pair of two-dimensional (2D) SO couplings for ultracold fermions beyond RWA. This work not only realizes the first anomalous Floquet topological Fermi gas beyond RWA, but also significantly improves the lifetime of the 2D-SO-coupled Fermi gas. Based on pump-probe quench measurements, we observe a deterministic phase relation between two sets of SO couplings, which is characteristic for our beyond-RWA scheme and enables the two SO couplings to be simultaneously tuned to the optimum 2D configurations. We observe intriguing band topology by measuring two-ring band-inversion surfaces, quantitatively consistent with a Floquet topological Fermi gas in the regime of high Chern numbers. Our study can open an avenue to explore exotic SO physics and anomalous topological states based on long-lived SO-coupled ultracold fermions.

The Mollow triplets under few-photon excitation

Resonant excitation is an essential tool in the development of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) for quantum information processing. One central challenge is to enable a transparent access to the QD signal without post-selection information loss. A viable path is through cavity enhancement, which has successfully lifted the resonantly scattered field strength over the laser background under \emph{weak} excitation. Here, we extend this success to the \emph{saturation} regime using a QD-micropillar device with a Purcell factor of 10.9 and an ultra-low background cavity reflectivity of just 0.0089. We achieve a signal to background ratio of 50 and an overall system responsivity of 3~\%, i.e., we detect on average 0.03 resonantly scattered single photons for every incident laser photon. Raising the excitation to the few-photon level, the QD response is brought into saturation where we observe the Mollow triplets as well as the associated cascade single photon emissions, without resort to any laser background rejection technique. Our work offers a new perspective toward QD cavity interface that is not restricted by the laser background.

Realization of Qi-Wu-Zhang model in spin-orbit-coupled ultracold fermions

Based on the optical Raman lattice technique, we experimentally realize the Qi-Wu-Zhang model for quantum anomalous Hall phase in ultracold fermions with two-dimensional (2D) spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We develop a novel protocol of pump-probe quench measurement to probe, with minimal heating, the resonant spin flipping on particular quasi-momentum subspace called band-inversion surfaces. With this protocol we demonstrate the first Dirac-type 2D SO coupling in a fermionic system, and detect non-trivial band topology by observing the change of band-inversion surfaces as the two-photon detuning varies. The non-trivial band topology is also observed by slowly loading the atoms into optical Raman lattices and measuring the spin textures. Our results show solid evidence for the realization of the minimal SO-coupled quantum anomalous Hall model, which can provide a feasible platform to investigate novel topological physics including the correlation effects with SO-coupled ultracold fermions.

Cavity-Enhanced Atom-Photon Entanglement with Subsecond Lifetime

A cold atomic ensemble suits well for optical quantum memories, and its entanglement with a single photon forms the building block for quantum networks that give promise for many revolutionary applications. Efficiency and lifetime are among the most important figures of merit for a memory. In this paper, we report the realization of entanglement between an atomic ensemble and a single-photon with subsecond lifetime and high efficiency. We engineer dual control modes in a ring cavity to create entanglement and make use of 3-dimensional optical lattice to prolong memory lifetime. The memory efficiency is 38% for 0.1 second storage. We verify the atom-photon entanglement after 1 second storage by testing the Bell inequality with a result of $S=2.36\pm0.14$.

Hybrid entanglement of three quantum memories with three photons

Quantum network has significant applications both practically and fundamentally. A hybrid architecture with photons and stationary nodes is highly promising. So far, experimental realizations are limited to two nodes with two photons. Going beyond state of the art by entangling many photons with many quantum nodes is highly appreciated. Here, we report an experiment realizing hybrid entanglement between three photons and three atomic-ensemble quantum memories. We make use of three similar setups, in each of which one pair of photon-memory entanglement with high overall efficiency is created via cavity enhancement. Through three-photon interference, the three quantum memories get entangled with the three photons. Via measuring the photons and applying feedforward, we heraldedly entangle the three memories. Our work demonstrates the largest size of hybrid memory-photon entanglement, which may be employed as a build block to construct larger and complex quantum network.

Time-resolved boson sampling with photons of different colors

Interference of multiple photons via a linear-optical network has profound applications for quantum foundation, quantum metrology and quantum computation. Particularly, a boson sampling experiment with a moderate number of photons becomes intractable even for the most powerful classical computers, and will lead to "quantum supremacy". Scaling up from small-scale experiments requires highly indistinguishable single photons, which may be prohibited for many physical systems. Here we experimentally demonstrate a time-resolved version of boson sampling by using photons not overlapping in their frequency spectra from three atomic-ensemble quantum memories. Time-resolved measurement enables us to observe nonclassical multiphoton correlation landscapes. An average fidelity over several interferometer configurations is measured to be 0.936(13), which is mainly limited by high-order events. Symmetries in the landscapes are identified to reflect symmetries of the optical network. Our work thus provides a route towards quantum supremacy with distinguishable photons.

Hong-Ou-Mandel Interference between Two Deterministic Collective Excitations in an Atomic Ensemble

We demonstrate deterministic generation of two distinct collective excitations in one atomic ensemble, and we realize the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between them. Using Rydberg blockade we create single collective excitations in two different Zeeman levels, and we use stimulated Raman transitions to perform a beam-splitter operation between the excited atomic modes. By converting the atomic excitations into photons, the two-excitation interference is measured by photon coincidence detection with a visibility of 0.89(6). The Hong-Ou-Mandel interference witnesses an entangled NOON state of the collective atomic excitations, and we demonstrate its two times enhanced sensitivity to a magnetic field compared with a single excitation. Our work implements a minimal instance of Boson sampling and paves the way for further multi-mode and multi-excitation studies with collective excitations of atomic ensembles.

An efficient quantum light-matter interface with sub-second lifetime

Quantum repeater holds the promise for scalable long-distance quantum communication. Towards a first quantum repeater based on memory-photon entanglement, significant progresses have made in improving performances of the building blocks. Further development is hindered by the difficulty of integrating key capabilities such as long storage time and high memory efficiency into a single system. Here we report an efficient light-matter interface with sub-second lifetime by confining laser-cooled atoms with 3D optical lattice and enhancing the atom-photon coupling with a ring cavity. An initial retrieval efficiency of 76(5)% together with an 1/e lifetime of 0.22(1) s have been achieved simultaneously, which already support sub-Hz entanglement distribution up to 1000 km through quantum repeater. Together with an efficient telecom interface and moderate multiplexing, our result may enable a first quantum repeater system that beats direct transmission in the near future.

Highly Retrievable Spinwave-Photon Entanglement Source

Entanglement between a single photon and a quantum memory forms the building blocks for quantum repeater and quantum network. Previous entanglement sources are typically with low retrieval efficiency, which limits future larger-scale applications. Here, we report a source of highly retrievable spinwave-photon entanglement. Polarization entanglement is created through interaction of a single photon with ensemble of atoms inside a low-finesse ring cavity. The cavity is engineered to be resonant for dual spinwave modes, which thus enables efficient retrieval of the spinwave qubit. An intrinsic retrieval efficiency up to 76(4)% has been observed. Such a highly retrievable atom-photon entanglement source will be very useful in future larger-scale quantum repeater and quantum network applications.
