Reconstructing Actions To Explain Deep Reinforcement Learning

Feature attribution has been a foundational building block for explaining the input feature importance in supervised learning with Deep Neural Network (DNNs), but face new challenges when applied to deep Reinforcement Learning (RL).We propose a new approach to explaining deep RL actions by defining a class of \emph{action reconstruction} functions that mimic the behavior of a network in deep RL. This approach allows us to answer more complex explainability questions than direct application of DNN attribution methods, which we adapt to \emph{behavior-level attributions} in building our action reconstructions. It also allows us to define \emph{agreement}, a metric for quantitatively evaluating the explainability of our methods. Our experiments on a variety of Atari games suggest that perturbation-based attribution methods are significantly more suitable in reconstructing actions to explain the deep RL agent than alternative attribution methods, and show greater \emph{agreement} than existing explainability work utilizing attention. We further show that action reconstruction allows us to demonstrate how a deep agent learns to play Pac-Man game.

Probe CP violation in $H\to γZ$ through forward-backward asymmetry

We suggest that the forward-backward asymmetry $(A_{FB})$ of the charged leptons in $gg\to H\toγZ\toγ\ell^-\ell^+$ process could be used to probe the CP violating $HγZ$ coupling when the interference from $gg\toγZ\toγ\ell^-\ell^+$ process is included. With CP violation in $HγZ$ coupling, the interference effect leads to a non-vanishing $A_{FB}$, which is also sensitive to the strong phase differences. The resonant and non-resonant strong phases together make $A_{FB}(\hat{s})$ change sign around Higgs mass $M_H$. For phenomenology study, we suggest the integral over one-side mass region below $M_H$ to magnify the $A_{FB}$ strength.

Fiducial distributions in Higgs and Drell-Yan production at N$^3$LL+NNLO

The perturbative description of certain differential distributions across a wide kinematic range requires the matching of fixed-order perturbation theory with resummation of large logarithmic corrections to all orders. We present precise matched predictions for transverse-momentum distributions in Higgs boson (H) and Drell-Yan pair (DY) production as well as for the closely related ${ϕ^{*}_η}$ distribution at the LHC. The calculation is exclusive in the Born kinematics, and allows for arbitrary fiducial selection cuts on the decay products of the colour singlets, which is of primary relevance for experimental analyses. Our predictions feature very small residual scale uncertainties and display a good convergence of the perturbative series. A comparison of the predictions for DY observables to experimental data at 8 TeV shows a very good agreement within the quoted errors.

Unsupervised Image Noise Modeling with Self-Consistent GAN

Noise modeling lies in the heart of many image processing tasks. However, existing deep learning methods for noise modeling generally require clean and noisy image pairs for model training; these image pairs are difficult to obtain in many realistic scenarios. To ameliorate this problem, we propose a self-consistent GAN (SCGAN), that can directly extract noise maps from noisy images, thus enabling unsupervised noise modeling. In particular, the SCGAN introduces three novel self-consistent constraints that are complementary to one another, viz.: the noise model should produce a zero response over a clean input; the noise model should return the same output when fed with a specific pure noise input; and the noise model also should re-extract a pure noise map if the map is added to a clean image. These three constraints are simple yet effective. They jointly facilitate unsupervised learning of a noise model for various noise types. To demonstrate its wide applicability, we deploy the SCGAN on three image processing tasks including blind image denoising, rain streak removal, and noisy image super-resolution. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our method over the state-of-the-art methods on a variety of benchmark datasets, even though the noise types vary significantly and paired clean images are not available.

Isolated photon and photon+jet production at NNLO QCD accuracy

We describe the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to isolated photon and photon-plus-jet production, and discuss how the experimental hadron-level photon definition and isolation criteria can be approximated in the theoretical parton-level calculation. The NNLO corrections lead to a considerable reduction of the theory uncertainty on the predictions, typically to less than five per cent, and enable an improved description of experimental measurements from ATLAS and CMS.

NNLO QCD Corrections for Higgs-plus-jet Production in the Four-lepton Decay Mode

We present the computation of Higgs boson production in association with a jet at the LHC including QCD corrections up to NNLO. The calculation includes the subsequent decay of the Higgs boson into four leptons, allowing for the full reconstruction of the final-state kinematics. In anticipation of improved LHC measurements based on the full Run II dataset, we present a study for single- and double-differential cross sections within the fiducial volume as defined in prior ATLAS analyses. Higher-order corrections are found to have a sizeable impact on both normalisation and shape of differential cross sections.

Jet cross sections at the LHC and the quest for higher precision

We perform a phenomenological study of $Z$ plus jet, Higgs plus jet and di-jet production at the Large Hadron Collider. We investigate in particular the dependence of the leading jet cross section on the jet radius as a function of the jet transverse momentum. Theoretical predictions are obtained using perturbative QCD calculations at the next-to and next-to-next-to-leading order, using a range of renormalization and factorization scales. The fixed order predictions are compared to results obtained from matching next-to-leading order calculations to parton showers. A study of the scale dependence as a function of the jet radius is used to provide a better estimate of the scale uncertainty for small jet sizes. The non-perturbative corrections as a function of jet radius are estimated from different generators.

Higgs boson production at the LHC using the $q_T$ subtraction formalism at N$^3$LO QCD

We consider higher-order QCD corrections to Higgs boson production through gluon-gluon fusion in the large top quark mass limit in hadron collisions. We extend the transverse-momentum ($q_T$) subtraction method to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) and combine it with the NNLO Higgs-plus-jet calculation to numerically compute differential infrared-safe observables at N$^3$LO for Higgs boson production in gluon fusion. To cancel the infrared divergences, we exploit the universal behaviour of the associated $q_T$ distributions in the small-$q_T$ region. We document all the necessary ingredients of the transverse-momentum subtraction method up to N$^3$LO. The missing third order collinear functions, which contribute only at $q_T$ =0, are approximated using a prescription which uses the known result for the total Higgs boson cross section at this order. As a first application of the third-order $q_T$ subtraction method, we present the N$^3$LO rapidity distribution of the Higgs boson at the LHC.

Precise QCD Description of the Higgs Boson Transverse Momentum Spectrum

The transverse momentum ($p_T$) distribution of Higgs bosons at hadron colliders enables a detailed probe of its production dynamics and is a key ingredient to precision studies of Higgs boson properties, but receives very large QCD corrections. We obtain a precision prediction for the $p_T$ spectrum by matching second-order (NNLO) QCD corrections at large $p_T$ with resummation of third-order logarithmic (N$^3$LL) corrections at small $p_T$. We achieve significantly improved results for $p_T< 35\,{\rm GeV}$ with perturbative uncertainties $\lesssim \pm 6\%$, and thus a convergent perturbative series for all values of $p_T$.

Graph-based Cooperative Caching in Fog-RAN

In this paper, the cooperative caching problem in fog radio access networks (F-RAN) is investigated. To maximize the incremental offloaded traffic, we formulate the clustering optimization problem with the consideration of cooperative caching and local content popularity, which falls into the scope of combinatorial programming. % and is NP-hard. We then propose an effective graph-based approach to solve this challenging problem. Firstly, a node graph is constructed with its vertex set representing the considered fog access points (F-APs) and its edge set reflecting the potential cooperations among the F-APs. %whether the F-APs the distance and load difference among the F-APs. Then, by exploiting the adjacency table of each vertex of the node graph, we propose to get the complete subgraphs through indirect searching for the maximal complete subgraphs for the sake of a reduced searching complexity. Furthermore, by using the complete subgraphs so obtained, a weighted graph is constructed. By setting the weights of the vertices of the weighted graph to be the incremental offloaded traffics of their corresponding complete subgraphs, the original clustering optimization problem can be transformed into an equivalent 0-1 integer programming problem. The max-weight independent subset of the vertex set of the weighted graph, which is equivalent to the objective cluster sets, can then be readily obtained by solving the above optimization problem through the greedy algorithm that we propose. Our proposed graph-based approach has an apparently low complexity in comparison with the brute force approach which has an exponential complexity. Simulation results show the remarkable improvements in terms of offloading gain by using our proposed approach.

Higgs plus one jet production at NNLO

We present the computation of Higgs boson plus one jet production at NNLO at the LHC. The computation is carried out in the heavy-top-quark approximation and using the antenna subtraction formalism to handle the IR divergent structure of the individual contributions. All channels and all colours are included. We illustrate aspects of the subtraction formalism and present results for the total cross section as well as distributions in the kinematical variables using a realistic experimental setting. We make a comparison between our results and recent ATLAS data for $H+j$ production.
