Feature Aggregation Network for Building Extraction from High-resolution Remote Sensing Images

The rapid advancement in high-resolution satellite remote sensing data acquisition, particularly those achieving submeter precision, has uncovered the potential for detailed extraction of surface architectural features. However, the diversity and complexity of surface distributions frequently lead to current methods focusing exclusively on localized information of surface features. This often results in significant intraclass variability in boundary recognition and between buildings. Therefore, the task of fine-grained extraction of surface features from high-resolution satellite imagery has emerged as a critical challenge in remote sensing image processing. In this work, we propose the Feature Aggregation Network (FANet), concentrating on extracting both global and local features, thereby enabling the refined extraction of landmark buildings from high-resolution satellite remote sensing imagery. The Pyramid Vision Transformer captures these global features, which are subsequently refined by the Feature Aggregation Module and merged into a cohesive representation by the Difference Elimination Module. In addition, to ensure a comprehensive feature map, we have incorporated the Receptive Field Block and Dual Attention Module, expanding the receptive field and intensifying attention across spatial and channel dimensions. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets have validated the outstanding capability of FANet in extracting features from high-resolution satellite images. This signifies a major breakthrough in the field of remote sensing image processing. We will release our code soon.

Unraveling Managerial Tangents in Firm Disclosure: Concealing Issues or Being Exposed?

Earnings calls influence stock prices and are traditionally analyzed using sentiment and linguistic traces. Our research introduces a "Topic-Switching Index," a novel metric quantified through the transformer model FinBERT, to measure managerial evasion during Q$\&$A sessions in earnings calls. We find a negative correlation between this index and subsequent stock prices, indicating that investors penalize managerial evasiveness. This study is the first to quantify such evasive tactics, adding a new dimension to how earnings calls are understood and suggesting that topic shifting is an overlooked but significant factor. We also show the predictability of the index under three different classifier models and it stands out in all circumstances.

Unraveling Latch Locking Using Machine Learning, Boolean Analysis, and ILP

Logic locking has become a promising approach to provide hardware security in the face of a possibly insecure fabrication supply chain. While many techniques have focused on locking combinational logic (CL), an alternative latch-locking approach in which the sequential elements are locked has also gained significant attention. Latch (LAT) locking duplicates a subset of the flip-flops (FF) of a design, retimes these FFs and replaces them with latches, and adds two types of decoy latches to obfuscate the netlist. It then adds control circuitry (CC) such that all latches must be correctly keyed for the circuit to function correctly. This paper presents a two-phase attack on latch-locked circuits that uses a novel combination of deep learning, Boolean analysis, and integer linear programming (ILP). The attack requires access to the reverse-engineered netlist but, unlike SAT attacks, is oracle-less, not needing access to the unlocked circuit or correct input/output pairs. We trained and evaluated the attack using the ISCAS'89 and ITC'99 benchmark circuits. The attack successfully identifies a key that is, on average, 96.9% accurate and fully discloses the correct functionality in 8 of the tested 19 circuits and leads to low function corruptibility (less than 4%) in 3 additional circuits. The attack run-times are manageable.

A Fuzzy-set-based Joint Distribution Adaptation Method for Regression and its Application to Online Damage Quantification for Structural Digital Twin

Online damage quantification suffers from insufficient labeled data that weakens its accuracy. In this context, adopting the domain adaptation on historical labeled data from similar structures/damages or simulated digital twin data to assist the current diagnosis task would be beneficial. However, most domain adaptation methods are designed for classification and cannot efficiently address damage quantification, a regression problem with continuous real-valued labels. This study first proposes a novel domain adaptation method, the Online Fuzzy-set-based Joint Distribution Adaptation for Regression, to address this challenge. By converting the continuous real-valued labels to fuzzy class labels via fuzzy sets, the marginal and conditional distribution discrepancy are simultaneously measured to achieve the domain adaptation for the damage quantification task. Thanks to the superiority of the proposed method, a state-of-the-art online damage quantification framework based on domain adaptation is presented. Finally, the framework has been comprehensively demonstrated with a damaged helicopter panel, in which three types of damage domain adaptations (across different damage locations, across different damage types, and from simulation to experiment) are all conducted, proving the accuracy of damage quantification can be significantly improved in a realistic environment. It is expected that the proposed approach to be applied to the fleet-level digital twin considering the individual differences.

Deep Reinforcement Learning in a Monetary Model

We propose using deep reinforcement learning to solve dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models. Agents are represented by deep artificial neural networks and learn to solve their dynamic optimisation problem by interacting with the model environment, of which they have no a priori knowledge. Deep reinforcement learning offers a flexible yet principled way to model bounded rationality within this general class of models. We apply our proposed approach to a classical model from the adaptive learning literature in macroeconomics which looks at the interaction of monetary and fiscal policy. We find that, contrary to adaptive learning, the artificially intelligent household can solve the model in all policy regimes.

Long time asymptotic behavior for the nonlocal mKdV equation in space-time solitonic regions-II

We study the long time asymptotic behavior for the Cauchy problem of an integrable real nonlocal mKdV equation with nonzero initial data in the solitonic regions \begin{align*} &q_t(x,t)-6σq(x,t)q(-x,-t)q_{x}(x,t)+q_{xxx}(x,t)=0, &q(x,0)=q_{0}(x),\ \ \lim_{x\to \pm\infty} q_{0}(x)=q_{\pm}, \end{align*} where $|q_{\pm}|=1$ and $q_{+}=δq_{-}$, $σδ=-1$. In our previous article, we have obtained long time asymptotics for the nonlocal mKdV equation in the solitonic region $-6<ξ<6$ with $ξ=\frac{x}{t}$. In this paper, we calculate the asymptotic expansion of the solution $q(x,t)$ for other solitonic regions $ξ<-6$ and $ξ>6$. Based on the Riemann-Hilbert problem of the the Cauchy problem, further using the $\bar{\partial}$ steepest descent method, we derive different long time asymptotic expansions of the solution $q(x,t)$ in above two different space-time solitonic regions. In the region $ξ<-6$, phase function $θ(z)$ has four stationary phase points on the $\mathbb{R}$. Correspondingly, $q(x,t)$ can be characterized with an $\mathcal{N}(Λ)$-soliton on discrete spectrum, the leading order term on continuous spectrum and an residual error term, which are affected by a function ${\rm Im}ν(ζ_i)$. In the region $ξ>6$, phase function $θ(z)$ has four stationary phase points on $i\mathbb{R}$, the corresponding asymptotic approximations can be characterized with an $\mathcal{N}(Λ)$-soliton with diverse residual error order $\mathcal{O}(t^{-1})$.

Effect of noncircularity on the dynamic behaviors of particles in a disformal rotating black-hole spacetime

A disformal rotating black-hole solution is a black-hole solution in quadratic degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor theories. It breaks the circular condition of spacetime different from the case of the usual Kerr spacetime. This study investigated the dynamic behaviors of the motion of timelike particles in such disformal black-hole spacetime with an extra deformation parameter. Results showed that the characteristics of the particle's motion depend on the sign of the deformation parameter. For the positive deformation parameter, the motion is regular and orderly. For the negative one, as the deformation parameter changes, the motion of the particles undergoes a series of transitions between the chaotic motion and the regular motion and falls into the horizon or escapes to spatial infinity. This means that the dynamic behavior of timelike particles in the disformal Kerr black-hole spacetime with noncircularity becomes richer than that in the usual Kerr black-hole case.

Real-Time Prediction of Probabilistic Crack Growth with a Helicopter Component Digital Twin

To deploy the airframe digital twin or to conduct probabilistic evaluations of the remaining life of a structural component, a (near) real-time crack-growth simulation method is critical. In this paper, a reduced-order simulation approach is developed to achieve this goal by leveraging two methods. On the one hand, the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method - finite element method (SGBEM-FEM) coupling method is combined with parametric modeling to generate the database of computed stress intensity factors for cracks with various sizes/shapes in a complex structural component, by which hundreds of samples are automatically simulated within a day. On the other hand, machine learning methods are applied to establish the relation between crack sizes/shapes and crack-front stress intensity factors. By combining the reduced-order computational model with load inputs and fatigue growth laws, a real-time prediction of probabilistic crack growth in complex structures with minimum computational burden is realized. In an example of a round-robin helicopter component, even though the fatigue crack growth is simulated cycle by cycle, the simulation is faster than real-time (as compared with the physical test). The proposed approach is a key simulation technology toward realizing the digital twin of complex structures, which further requires fusion of model predictions with flight/inspection/monitoring data.

Long time asymptotics for the nonlocal mKdV equation with finite density initial data

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for an integrable real nonlocal (also called reverse-space-time) mKdV equation with nonzero boundary conditions \begin{align*} &q_t(x,t)-6σq(x,t)q(-x,-t)q_{x}(x,t)+q_{xxx}(x,t)=0, &q(x,0)=q_{0}(x),\lim_{x\to \pm\infty} q_{0}(x)=q_{\pm}, \end{align*} where $|q_{\pm}|=1$ and $q_{+}=δq_{-}$, $σδ=-1$. Based on the spectral analysis of the Lax pair, we express the solution of the Cauchy problem of the nonlocal mKdV equation in terms of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. In a fixed space-time solitonic region $-6<x/t<6$, we apply $\bar{\partial}$-steepest descent method to analyze the long-time asymptotic behavior of the solution $q(x,t)$. We find that the long time asymptotic behavior of $q(x,t)$ can be characterized with an $N(Λ)$-soliton on discrete spectrum and leading order term $\mathcal{O}(t^{-1/2})$ on continuous spectrum up to an residual error order $\mathcal{O}(t^{-1})$.

Chaotic motion of scalar particle coupling to Chern-Simons invariant in Kerr black hole spacetime

We present firstly the equation of motion for the test scalar particle coupling to the Chern-Simons invariant in Kerr black hole spacetime by the short-wave approximation. We have analyzed the dynamical behaviors of the test coupled particles by applying techniques including Poincaré sections, fast Lyapunov exponent indicator, bifurcation diagram and basins of attraction. It is shown that there exists chaotic phenomenon in the motion of scalar particle interacted with the Chern-Simons invariant in a Kerr black hole spacetime. With the increase of the coupling strength, the motion of the coupled particles for the chosen parameters first undergoes a series of transitions betweens chaotic motion and regular motion and then falls into horizon or escapes to spatial infinity. Thus, the coupling between scalar particle and Chern-Simons invariant yields the richer dynamical behavior of scalar particle in a Kerr black hole spacetime.

Revealing the Role of User Moods in Struggling Search Tasks

User-centered approaches have been extensively studied and used in the area of struggling search. Related research has targeted key aspects of users such as user satisfaction or frustration, and search success or failure, using a variety of experimental methods including laboratory user studies, in-situ explicit feedback from searchers and by using crowdsourcing. Such studies are valuable in advancing the understanding of search difficulty from a user's perspective, and yield insights that can directly improve search systems and their evaluation. However, little is known about how user moods influence their interactions with a search system or their perception of struggling. In this work, we show that a user's own mood can systematically bias the user's perception, and experience while interacting with a search system and trying to satisfy an information need. People who are in activated-pleasant / activated-unpleasant moods tend to issue more queries than people in deactivated or neutral moods. Those in an unpleasant mood perceive a higher level of difficulty. Our insights extend the current understanding of struggling search tasks and have important implications on the design and evaluation of search systems supporting such tasks.

Transparent Concurrency Control: Decoupling Concurrency Control from DBMS

For performance reasons, conventional DBMSes adopt monolithic architectures. A monolithic design cripples the adaptability of a DBMS, making it difficult to customize, to meet particular requirements of different applications. In this paper, we propose to completely separate the code of concurrency control (CC) from a monolithic DBMS. This allows us to add / remove functionalities or data structures to / from a DBMS easily, without concerning the issues of data consistency. As the separation deprives the concurrency controller of the knowledge about data organization and processing, it may incur severe performance issues. To minimize the performance loss, we devised a two-level CC mechanism. At the operational level, we propose a robust scheduler that guarantees to complete any data operation at a manageable cost. At the transactional level, the scheduler can utilize data semantics to achieve enhanced performance. Extensive experiments were conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach.

LogCanvas: Visualizing Search History Using Knowledge Graphs

In this demo paper, we introduce LogCanvas, a platform for user search history visualisation. Different from the existing visualisation tools, LogCanvas focuses on helping users re-construct the semantic relationship among their search activities. LogCanvas segments a user's search history into different sessions and generates a knowledge graph to represent the information exploration process in each session. A knowledge graph is composed of the most important concepts or entities discovered by each search query as well as their relationships. It thus captures the semantic relationship among the queries. LogCanvas offers a session timeline viewer and a snippets viewer to enable users to re-find their previous search results efficiently. LogCanvas also provides a collaborative perspective to support a group of users in sharing search results and experience.

Shock Wave in Leader Discharge Observed Using Mach-Zehnder Interferometry

A leader is an electric discharge mechanism in long-air-gap discharges. In this work, we report the shock wave phenomenon in an air-gap leader discharge observed using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a time resolution of several microseconds. The continuous temporal evolution of the shock wave and the plasma channel was recorded and reproduced with a thermo-hydrodynamic model based on the measured current. The wave propagated at nearly the speed of sound, and the simulation results for the shock wave front positions and the plasma channel radius showed good consistency with the experimental measurements. Detailed thermal parameters obtained through the simulation showed that continuous energy injection by the current results in a temporary over-pressure process in the plasma channel and produces the shock wave.

Decentralizing MVCC by Leveraging Visibility

Multiversion Concurrency Control (MVCC) is a widely adopted concurrency control mechanism in database systems, which usually utilizes timestamps to resolve conflicts between transactions. However, centralized allocation of timestamps is a potential bottleneck for parallel transaction management. This bottleneck is becoming increasingly visible with the rapidly growing degree of parallelism of today's computing platforms. This paper introduces Visibility based Concurrency Control (ViCC), a series of CC mechanisms that allow transactions to determine their timestamps autonomously, without relying on centralized coordination. As such, ViCC can scale well, rendering it suitable for various multicore and MPP platforms. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate its advantage over existing approaches.

A Class of Quasitriangular Group-cograded Multiplier Hopf Algebras

For a multiplier Hopf algebra pairing $\langle A, B\rangle$, we construct a class of group-cograded multiplier Hopf algebras $D(A, B)$, generalizing the classical construction of finite dimensional Hopf algebras introduced by Panaite and Staic Mihai. Furthermore, if the multiplier Hopf algebra pairing admits a canonical multiplier in $M(B\otimes A)$ we show the existence of quasitriangular structure on $D(A, B)$. As an application, some special cases and examples are provided.

Chemical-potential-based Lattice Boltzmann Method for Nonideal Fluids

Chemical potential is an effective way to drive phase transition or express wettability. In this letter, we present a chemical-potential-based lattice Boltzmann model to simulate multiphase flows. The nonideal force is directly evaluated by a chemical potential. The model theoretically satisfies thermodynamics and Galilean invariance. The computational efficiency is improved owing to avoiding the calculation of pressure tensor. We have derived several chemical potentials of the popular equations of state from the free-energy density function. An effective chemical-potential boundary condition is implemented to investigate the wettability of a solid surface. Remarkably, the numerical results show that the contact angle can be linearly tuned by the surface chemical potential.

Heisenberg double as braided commutative Yetter-Drinfel'd module algebra over Drinfel'd double in multiplier Hopf algebra case

Based on a pairing of two regular multiplier Hopf algebras $A$ and $B$, Heisenberg double $\mathscr{H}$ is the smash product $A \# B$ with respect to the left regular action of $B$ on $A$. Let $\mathscr{D}=A\bowtie B$ be the Drinfel'd double, then Heisenberg double $\mathscr{H}$ is a Yetter-Drinfel'd $\mathscr{D}$-module algebra, and it is also braided commutative by the braiding of Yetter-Drinfel'd module, which generalizes the results in [10] to some infinite dimensional cases.
