Three-dimensional angular deviation and diffraction efficiency of a grating in Littrow-configuration ECDL

We consider in this paper the angular deviation and diffraction efficiency of the reflection gratings in Littrow-configuration for applications of external cavity diode laser using the rigorous coupled-wave analysis method. We consider the three-dimensional diffraction case in general, where the incidence plane is un-parallel with the grating vector, i.e. conical diffraction. The angular tolerance of arbitrary gratings under plane and conical diffraction are thus derived and presented. A typical blazed grating is chosen as an example to calculate its diffraction efficiency using the rigorous coupled-wave analysis method. Furthermore, we point out that the angular tolerance and reflection efficiency can be improved if the appropriate parameter settings are selected for Littrow-configuration devices, including incidence angle, diffraction order, grating period and blazed angle. Otherwise, a tiny slanting angle of the grating vector deviated from the incidence plane will deviate the feedback light away from entering the laser-diode-chip and halt laser oscillation in the external cavity. Finally, a general rule for the parameter settings in Littrow-configuration is provided as a benchmark.

A circular Airy vortex beam carrying two point vortices symmetrically on the x-axis with the same and opposite signs

We study circular Airy vortex beams (CAVBs) with two same or opposite point vortices symmetrically loaded on x-axis, inside, onside and outside of the main ring (The absolute value of topological charge is one). It is found that the loading position (denoted as dv) can significantly tune the auto-focusing behaviour. For two vortices with same signs, when dv is near zero, the double vortices approximately merge at the focal plane. But as dv increases, the merged vortices will gradually separate along the y-axis. When dv is large, the focal spot becomes Bessel-shaped pattern. For opposite vortices, when dv is small, the focusing pattern is Bessel-shaped (no vortex exists in the centre) but not strictly in the centre. With the increase of dv, the original spot gradually moves up along the y-axis and transfers its energy to the newborn spot below x-axis, at the same time, the newborn spot moves towards the centre. When dv is large, the focus returns to a Bessel-like pattern. Good agreements have been achieved between simulations and experiments. The tailoring effect of dv of the two vortices on the focal pattern may have potential applications in micromanipulation, communication and other fields.

Laser frequency stabilization by combining modulation transfer and frequency modulation spectroscopy

We present a hybrid laser frequency stabilization method combining modulation transfer spectroscopy (MTS) and frequency modulation spectroscopy (FMS) for the cesium D2 transition. In a typical pump-probe setup, the error signal is a combination of the DC-coupled MTS error signal and the AC-coupled FMS error signal. This combines the long-term stability of the former with the high signal-to-noise ratio of the latter. In addition, we enhance the long-term frequency stability with laser intensity stabilization. By measuring the frequency difference between two independent hybrid spectroscopies, we investigate the short-term and long-term stability. We find a long-term stability of 7.8 kHz characterized by a standard deviation of the beating frequency drift over the course of 10 hours, and a short-term stability of 1.9 kHz characterized by an Allan deviation of that at 2 seconds of integration time.
