Comparing local-global obstructions on algebraic stacks

Let k be a number field. For quotient stacks [X/G] with X a smooth quasi-projective geometrically integral k-variety and G a linear k-group, we extend several relations between local-global obstructions previously known for varieties, showing that étale-Brauer obstruction is the finest among various obstructions (such as iterated descent, finite descent, descent, Brauer-Manin).

There are no exotic compact moduli of sheaves on a curve

We study moduli of coherent sheaves of some given degree and positive rank on a curve. We show that there is only one nonempty open condition on families of sheaves that yields a universally closed adequate moduli space, namely, the one that recovers the classical moduli of slope semistable vector bundles.

PANDA: Parkinson's Assistance and Notification Driving Aid

Parkinson's Disease (PD) significantly impacts driving abilities, often leading to early driving cessation or accidents due to reduced motor control and increasing reaction times. To diminish the impact of these symptoms, we developed PANDA (Parkinson's Assistance and Notification Driving Aid), a multi-modality real-time alert system designed to monitor driving patterns continuously and provide immediate alerts for irregular driving behaviors, enhancing driver safety of individuals with PD. The system was developed through a participatory design process with 9 people with PD and 13 non-PD individuals using a driving simulator, which allowed us to identify critical design characteristics and collect detailed data on driving behavior. A user study involving individuals with PD evaluated the effectiveness of PANDA, exploring optimal strategies for delivering alerts and ensuring they are timely and helpful. Our findings demonstrate that PANDA has the potential to enhance the driving safety of individuals with PD, offering a valuable tool for maintaining independence and confidence behind the wheel.

Distinguishing Algebraic Spaces from Schemes

We introduce local invariants of algebraic spaces and stacks which measure how far they are from being a scheme. Using these invariants, we develop mostly topological criteria to determine when the moduli space of a stack is a scheme. As an application we study moduli of principal bundles on a smooth projective curve.

S-equivalence for algebraic stacks

We generalize the notion of S-equivalence, previously defined for semistable vector bundles, to points in arbitrary algebraic stacks and use it to describe the identification of points when passing to the moduli space. As applications, we recover the classical S-equivalence by considering the identification of semistable vector bundles in the moduli space, and discuss its relation to separatedness of the moduli space.

On the moment measure conjecture

The moment measure conjecture of Bialynicki-Birula and Sommese gives a combinatorial characterization of all open substacks of a global quotient stack for a torus action on a normal projective variety that admit a proper good moduli space, in other words it characterizes the invariant open subvarieties that admit a proper quotient. In this article we prove the conjecture for actions on smooth varieties. This gives an instance of stability conditions defined by cohomological invariants that are not given by Chern classes of line bundles.

Proper good quotients for $\mathbf{G}_m$-actions

We give an algebraic proof of a result, due to Bialynicki-Birula and Sommese, characterizing the invariant open subsets of a normal proper variety equipped with a $\mathbf{G}_m$-action that admit a proper good quotient. A major ingredient is the existence result for moduli spaces of algebraic stacks due to Alper, Halpern-Leistner and Heinloth.

A stacky approach to identifying the semistable locus of bundles

We show that the semistable locus is the unique maximal open substack of the moduli stack of principal bundles over a curve that admits a schematic moduli space. For rank $2$ vector bundles it coincides with the unique maximal open substack that admits a separated moduli space, but for higher rank there exist other open substacks that admit separated moduli spaces.

On the identifiability of mixtures of ranking models

Mixtures of ranking models are standard tools for ranking problems. However, even the fundamental question of parameter identifiability is not fully understood: the identifiability of a mixture model with two Bradley-Terry-Luce (BTL) components has remained open. In this work, we show that popular mixtures of ranking models with two components (BTL, multinomial logistic models with slates of size 3, or Plackett-Luce) are generically identifiable, i.e., the ground-truth parameters can be identified except when they are from a pathological subset of measure zero. We provide a framework for verifying the number of solutions in a general family of polynomial systems using algebraic geometry, and apply it to these mixtures of ranking models to establish generic identifiability. The framework can be applied more broadly to other learning models and may be of independent interest.
