A high resolution multi-phase clock Time-Digital Convertor implemented on Kintex-7 FPGA

Time-digital Converter (TDC) aims to measure the arrival time of the leading edge of the pulse signal. Our recent work presented a high resolution multi-phase TDC based on the Kintex-7 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device. A simple I/O tile based circular input buffer is employed to oscillate the input signal periodically, and then a multi-phase TDC based on ISERDES core with a 625 ps bin size is used to accomplish the multiple measurements for getting higher resolution performance. In this paper, the design concept, architecture, as well as kernel implementation considerations are all discussed. To evaluate the TDC's performance, we built a verification system based on Kintex-7 FPGA. Initial test results indicate that the TDC's effective bin size is successfully reduced from 625 ps to 78.125 ps, and the measured dual-channel time resolution is better than 35 ps RMS.

Air, bone and soft-tissue Segmentation on 3D brain MRI Using Semantic Classification Random Forest with Auto-Context Model

As bone and air produce weak signals with conventional MR sequences, segmentation of these tissues particularly difficult in MRI. We propose to integrate patch-based anatomical signatures and an auto-context model into a machine learning framework to iteratively segment MRI into air, bone and soft tissue. The proposed semantic classification random forest (SCRF) method consists of a training stage and a segmentation stage. During training stage, patch-based anatomical features were extracted from registered MRI-CT training images, and the most informative features were identified to train a series of classification forests with auto-context model. During segmentation stage, we extracted selected features from MRI and fed them into the well-trained forests for MRI segmentation. The DSC for air, bone and soft tissue obtained with proposed SCRF were 0.976, 0.819 and 0.932, compared to 0.916, 0.673 and 0.830 with RF, 0.942, 0.791 and 0.917 with U-Net. SCRF also demonstrated superior segmentation performances for sensitivity and specificity over RF and U-Net for all three structure types. The proposed segmentation technique could be a useful tool to segment bone, air and soft tissue, and have the potential to be applied to attenuation correction of PET/MRI system, MRI-only radiation treatment planning and MR-guided focused ultrasound surgery.

Chirped temporal solitons in driven optical resonators

Temporal solitons in driven microresonator, fiber-resonator, and bulk enhancement cavities enable attractive optical sources for spectroscopy, communications, and metrology. Here we present theoretical and experimental observations of a new class of temporal optical soliton characterized by pulses with large and positive chirp in normal dispersion resonators with strong spectral filtering. Numerical simulations reveal stable waveforms over a wide new range of parameters including highly chirped pulses at large drive powers. Chirped temporal solitons matching predictions are observed in experiments with normal dispersion fiber resonators strongly driven with nanosecond pulses. Scaling laws are developed and provide simple design guidelines for generating chirped temporal solitons in bulk- and micro-resonator, in addition to fiber-resonator platforms. The relationship between the chirped solutions and other stable waveforms in normal and anomalous dispersion resonators is examined. Chirped temporal solitons represent a promising new resource for frequency-comb and ultrashort-pulse generation.

Information Rate Decomposition for Feedback Systems with Output Disturbance

This technical note considers the problem of resource allocation in linear feedback control system with output disturbance. By decomposing the information rate in the feedback communication channel, the channel resource allocation is thoroughly analyzed. The results show that certain amount of resource is used to transmit the output disturbance and this resource allocation is independent from feedback controller design.
