Emergence of Competing Orders and Possible Quantum Spin Liquid in SU(N) Fermions

In the past decades, tremendous efforts have been made towards understanding the exotic physics emerging from competition between various ordering tendencies in strongly correlated systems. Employing state-of-the-art quantum Monte-Carlo simulation, we investigate an interacting SU($N$) fermionic model with varying interaction strength and value of $N$, and unveil the ground-state phase diagram of the model exhibiting a plethora of exotic phases. For small value of $N$, namely $N=2,3$, the ground state is antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase, whereas in the large-$N$ limit, valence bound solid (VBS) order is dominant. For the intermediate value of $N$ such as $N=4$, remarkably, our study reveals distinct VBS orders appear in the weak and strong coupling regimes. More fantastically, the competition between staggered and columnar VBS ordering tendencies gives rise to a Mott insulating phase without spontaneously symmetry breaking (SSB), existing in a large interacting parameter regime, which is consistent with a gapped quantum spin liquid. Our study not only provides a platform to investigate the fundamental physics of quantum many-body systems, but also offers a novel route towards searching for exotic states of matter such as quantum spin liquid in realistic quantum materials.

Conformal Boundary Conditions of Symmetry-Enriched Quantum Critical Spin Chains

Some quantum critical states cannot be smoothly deformed into each other without either crossing some multicritical points or explicitly breaking certain symmetries even if they belong to the same universality class. This brings up the notion of ``symmetry-enriched'' quantum criticality. While recent works in the literature focused on critical states with robust degenerate edge modes, we propose that the conformal boundary condition (b.c.) is a more generic characteristic of such quantum critical states. We show that in two families of quantum spin chains, which generalize the Ising and the three-state Potts models, the quantum critical point between a symmetry-protected topological phase and a symmetry-breaking order realizes a conformal b.c. distinct from the simple Ising and Potts chains. Furthermore, we argue that the conformal b.c. can be derived from the bulk effective field theory, which realizes a novel bulk-boundary correspondence in symmetry-enriched quantum critical states.

Fidelity susceptibility as a diagnostic of the commensurate-incommensurate transition: A revisit of the programmable Rydberg chain

In recent years, programmable Rydberg-atom arrays have been widely used to simulate new quantum phases and phase transitions, generating great interest among theorists and experimentalists. Based on the large-scale density matrix renormalization group method, the ground-state phase diagram of one-dimensional Rydberg chains is investigated with fidelity susceptibility as an efficient diagnostic method. We find that the competition between Rydberg blockade and external detuning produces unconventional phases and phase transitions. As the Rydberg blockade radius increases, the phase transition between disordered and density-wave ordered phases changes from the standard Potts universality class to an unconventional chiral one. As the radius increases further (above Potts point but still close to the tip of the lobe), a very narrow intermediate floating-phase region begins to appear. A concise physical picture is also provided to illustrate the numerical results. Compared with previous studies, this work brings more evidence for commensurate-incommensurate quantum phase transitions in programmable quantum simulators from the perspective of quantum information, showing that fidelity susceptibility can be used to study such phase transitions.

Emergent space-time supersymmetry at disorder quantum critical point

We study the effect of disorder on the spacetime supersymmetry that is proposed to emerge at the quantum critical point of pair density wave transition in (2+1)D Dirac semimetals and (3+1)D Weyl semimetals. In the (2+1)D Dirac semimetal, we consider three types of disorder, including random scalar potential, random vector potential and random mass potential, while the random mass disorder is absent in the (3+1)D Weyl semimetal. Via a systematic renormalization group analysis, we find that any type of weak random disorder is irrelevant due to the couplings between the disorder potential and the Yukawa vertex. The emergent supersymmetry is thus stable for weak random potentials. Our work will pave the way for exploration supersymmetry in realistic condensed matter systems.

Emergent phase transition in Cluster Ising model with dissipation

We study a cluster Ising model with non-Hermitian external field which can be exactly solved in the language of free fermions. By investigating the second derivative of energy density and fidelity, the possible new critical points are tentatively located. String order parameter and staggered magnetization are then detected to reveal emergent phases of brand new characteristics. To categorize the exotic phases and phase transitions induced by non-Hermiticity, we calculate the variation mode of spin correlation function as well as string parameter, which characterize the emergent phases and critical points with different patterns of decay and critical exponents. With the help of string order parameter and staggered magnetization, we find that there are four phases after introducing the non-Hermiticity -- the cluster phase, the gapless phase, the paramagnetic (PM) phase and the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase. A phase diagram is then presented to graphically illustrate, based on two "KT-like" phase transitions and an Ising phase transition, respectively, the generation of three critical lines as non-Hermitian strength increases. Our theoretical work is expected to be realized in the experiment of ultra-cold atoms, pushing for progress in exploring novel phases and phase transitions.

Dynamics in an exact solvable quantum magnet: benchmark for quantum computer

Quantum magnets are never short of novel and fascinating dynamics, yet its simulation by classical computers requires exponentially-scaled computation resources, which renders the research on large-scale many-body dynamics fiendishly difficult. In this letter, we explore the dynamic behavior of 2D large-scale ferromagnetic J1-J2 Heisenberg model both theoretically and experimentally. First, the analytical solution of magnon dynamics is obtained to show an obvious ballistic propagation of magnon, which is typical for quantum walk. Then, we verify the dynamic behavior of the system through numerical approach of exact diagonalization and tensor network method. We also calculate out-of-time ordered correlators and butterfly velocities among different lattice points, finding that they can well depict the competition between different couplings. Finally, a quantum walk experiment is designed and conducted on the basis of IBM programmable quantum processors, and the experimental results are in consistence with our theoretical predictions. Since the analytical results can be used, in principle, to predict the behavior of large-scale quantum many-body systems and even those infinitely large, this work will help facilitate further research on quantum walk and quantum many-body dynamics in large-scale lattice systems, guide future design of quantum computers, as well as popularize quantum computers until they are known and available to every household in the world.
