Central BH mass of tidal disruption event candidate SDSS J0159 through long-term optical variabilities

In this manuscript, central BH mass is determined in the tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate SDSS J0159, through the nine years long variabilities, in order to check whether the virial BH mass is consistent with the mass estimated by another independent methods. First, host galaxy spectroscopic features are described by 350 simple stellar templates, to confirm the total stellar mass about $7\times10^{10}{\rm M_\odot}$ in SDSS J0159, indicating the virial BH mass about two magnitudes larger than the BH mass estimated by the total stellar mass. Second, based on an efficient method and fitting procedure, through theoretical TDE model applied to describe the SDSS $ugriz$-band light curves of SDSS J0159, central BH mass can be determined as $M_{BH}\sim4.5_{-1.1}^{+1.3}\times10^6{\rm M_\odot}$, well consistent with the M-sigma relation expected BH mass and the total stellar mass expected BH mass. Third, the theoretical TDE model with parameter of central BH mass limited to be higher than $10^8{\rm M_\odot}$ can not lead to reasonable descriptions to the light curves of SDSS J0159, indicating central BH mass higher than $10^8{\rm M_\odot}$ is not preferred in SDSS J0159. Therefore, the TDE model determined central BH mass of SDSS J0159 are about two magnitudes lower than the virial BH mass, to support central BLRs including accreting debris contributions from central TDE, and provide interesting clues to reconfirm that outliers in the space of virial BH mass versus stellar velocity dispersion should be better candidates of TDE.

A practicable estimation of opening angle of dust torus in Type-1.9 AGN with double-peaked broad H$α$

In this manuscript, an independent method is proposed to estimate opening angle of dust torus in AGN, through unique properties of Type-1.9 AGN with double-peaked broad H$α$ (Type-1.9 DPAGN) coming from central accretion disk. Type-1.9 AGN without broad H$β$ can be expected by the commonly accepted unified model of AGN, considering central BLRs seriously obscured by dust torus with its upper boundary in the line of sight. For the unique Type-1.9 DPAGN, accretion disk originations of double-peaked broad H$α$ can be applied to determine the inclination angle of the central accretion disk, which is well accepted as substitute of the half opening angle of the central dust torus. Then, among low redshift Type-1.9 DPAGN in SDSS, SDSS J1607+3319 at redshift 0.063 is collected, and the half opening angle of the central dust torus is determined to be around 46$\pm$4\degr, after considering disfavoured BBH system to explain the double-peaked broad H$α$ through long-term none variabilities and disfavoured local physical conditions to explain disappearance of broad H$β$ through virial BH mass properties. The results indicate that more detailed studying on dust torus of AGN can be appropriately done through Type-1.9 DPAGN in the near future.

Modeling the flare in NGC 1097 from 1991 to 2004 as a tidal disruption event

In the Letter, interesting evidence is reported to support a central tidal disruption event (TDE) in the known AGN NGC 1097. Considering the motivations of TDE as one probable origination of emission materials of double-peaked broad emission lines and also as one probable explanation to changing-look AGN, it is interesting to check whether are there clues to support a TDE in NGC 1097, not only a changing-look AGN but also an AGN with double-peaked broad emission lines. Under the assumption that the onset of broad H$α$ emission was due to a TDE, the 13years-long (1991-2004) variability of double-peaked broad H$α$ line flux in NGC 1097 can be well predicted by theoretical TDE model, with a $(1-1.5){\rm M_\odot}$ main-sequence star tidally disrupted by the central BH with TDE model determined mass about $(5-8)\times10^7{\rm M_\odot}$. The results provide interesting evidence to not only support TDE-related origin of double-peaked broad line emission materials but also support TDE as an accepted physical explanation to physical properties of changing-look AGN.

A 3.8yr optical quasi-periodic oscillations in blue quasar SDSS J132144+033055 through combined light curves from CSS and ZTF

In the manuscript, a 3.8yr optical quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) is reported in blue quasar SDSS J132144+033055 (=\obj) at $z=0.269$, based on 16.3yr-long light curve from both CSS and ZTF directly described by a sinusoidal function. The 3.8yr QPOs can be confirmed through the Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram with confidence level higher than 5$σ$, through properties of the phase-folded light curve and the WWZ technique. Moreover, the collected Pan-STARRS light curves well follow the sinusoidal function described best fitting results to the CSS and ZTF light curves. The optical QPOs strongly indicate a central binary black hole (BBH) system in \obj, with expected space separation smaller than 0.018pc, through the estimated upper limit of total BH mass $3.3\times10^9{\rm M_\odot}$ through the correlation between BH mass and continuum luminosity. Meanwhile, we check disk precession applied to explain the optical QPOs. However, under the disk precession assumption, the determined optical emission regions from central BH have sizes about $37{\rm R_G}$ similar as the sizes $35{\rm R_G}$ of the expected NUV emission regions through the correlation between disk size and BH mass, indicating the disk precession is not preferred. And due to undetected radio emissions, jet precession can be ruled out. Furthermore, only 0.1\% probability can determined as the QPOs mis-detected through CAR process randomly created light curves related to intrinsic AGN activities, re-confirming the optical QPOs with significance level higher than 3$σ$. Therefore, combining long-term light curves from CSS and ZTF can lead to more QPOs candidates in the near future.

Dependence of NLRs sizes on [OIII] luminosity in low redshift AGN with double-peaked broad Balmer emission lines

In the manuscript, the simple but interesting results are reported on the upper limits of NLRs sizes of a small sample of 38 low redshift ($z<0.1$) AGN with double-peaked broad emission lines (double-peaked BLAGN), in order to check whether the NLRs sizes in type-1 AGN and type-2 AGN obey the similar empirical dependence on \o3~ luminosity. In order to correct the inclination effects on projected NLRs sizes of type-1 AGN, the accretion disk origin is commonly applied to describe the double-peaked broad H$α$ leading to the determined inclination angles of central disk-like BLRs of the 38 double-peaked BLAGN. Then, considering the fixed SDSS fiber radius, the upper limits of NLRs sizes of the 38 double-peaked BLAGN can be estimated. Meanwhile, the strong linear correlation between continuum luminosity and \o3~ luminosity is applied to confirm that the \o3~ emissions of the 38 double-peaked BLAGN are totally covered in the SDSS fibers. Considering the reddening corrected measured \o3~ luminosity, the upper limits of NLRs sizes of the 38 double-peaked BLAGN are within the 99.9999\% confidence interval of the expected results from the empirical relation between NLRs sizes and \o3~ luminosity in the type-2 AGN. In the current stage, there are no clues to challenge the Unified model of AGN, through the space properties of NLRs.

A 6.4yr optical quasi-periodic oscillations in SDSS J075217.84+193542.2: a new candidate for central binary black hole system

In this manuscript, a 6.4yr optical quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) is detected in the quasar SDSS J075217.84+193542.2 (=\obj) at a redshift 0.117, of which 13.6yr-long light curve from CSS and ASAS-SN directly described by a sinusoidal function with a periodicity 6.4yr. The 6.4yr QPOs can be further confirmed through the Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram with confidence level higher than 99.99\%, and through the auto-correlation analysis results, and through the WWZ technique. The optical QPOs strongly indicate a central binary black hole (BBH) system in \obj. The determined two broad Gaussian components in the broad H$α$ can lead to the BBH system with expected space separation about 0.02pc between the expected two central BHs with determined virial BH masses about $8.8\times10^7{\rm M_\odot}$ and $1.04\times10^9{\rm M_\odot}$. Meanwhile, we check the disk precessions applied to explain the optical QPOs. However, under the disk precession assumption, the determined optical emission regions from central BH have sizes about $40{\rm R_G}$ two times smaller than sizes of the expected NUV emission regions through the correlation between disk size and BH mass, indicating the disk precessions are not preferred. And due to the lower radio loudness around 0.28, jet precessions can be also totally ruled out. Furthermore, only 0.08\% probability can determined as the QPOs mis-detected through light curves randomly created by the CAR process, re-confirming the reported optical QPOs.

Central black hole mass in the distant tidal disruption event candidate of {\it Swift} J2058.4+0516

In the manuscript, central black hole (BH) mass is estimated in the distant TDE (tidal disruption event) of {\it Swift} J2058.4+0516 as the second candidate of relativistic jet birth related to TDE. {\it Swift} J2058.4+0516 have quite different BH masses estimated through different indirect methods in the literature. Therefore, it is necessary and interesting to determine the central BH mass in {\it Swift} J2058.4+0516 by one another independent method. Here, based on the theoretical TDE model applied to describe the long-term time-dependent X-ray variabilities of {\it Swift} J2058.4+0516, the central BH mass can be well determined to be around $1.05_{-0.29}^{+0.39}\times10^5{\rm M_\odot}$, after kind considerations of suggested intrinsic beaming effects from such relativistic jet tightly related to TDE. Moreover, the {\it Swift} J2058.4+0516 is an unique object in the space of BH masses versus energy transfer efficiencies of the reported TDE candidates, providing interesting clues to detect and/or anticipate candidates of relativistic TDE to make the birth of relativistic jets.

Long-term variability of the composite galaxy SDSS J103911-000057: A candidate of true Type-2 AGN

In the manuscript, the composite galaxy SDSS J103911-000057 (=SDSS J1039) is reported as a better candidate of true Type-2 AGN without hidden BLRs. None broad but only narrow emission lines detected in SDSS J1039 can be well confirmed both by the F-test technique and by the expected broad emission lines with EW smaller than 13.5Å~ with 99\% confidence level. Meanwhile, a reliable AGN power law component is preferred with confidence level higher than 7sigma in SDSS J1039. Furthermore, the long-term variability of SDSS J1039 from CSS can be well described by the DRW process with intrinsic variability timescale $τ\sim100{\rm days}$, similar as normal quasars. And, based on BH mass in SDSS J1039 through the msig relation and on the correlation between AGN continuum luminosity and total H$α$ luminosity, the expected broad H$α$, if there was, could be re-constructed with line width about $300-1000{\rm km~s^{-1}}$ and with line flux about $666\times10^{-17}{\rm erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}}$ under the Virialization assumption to BLRs, providing robust evidence to reject the probability that the intrinsic probable broad H$α$ were overwhelmed by noises of the SDSS spectrum in SDSS J1039. Moreover, the SDSS J1039 does follow the same correlation between continuum luminosity and [O~{\sc iii}] line luminosity as the one for normal broad line AGN, indicating SDSS J1039 classified as a changing-look AGN at dim state can be well ruled out. Therefore, under the current knowledge, SDSS J1039 is a better candidate of true Type-2 AGN.

SDSS J154751.94+025550 with double-peaked broad Hβbut single-peaked broad Hα: a candidate for central binary black hole system?

In this manuscript, an interesting blue Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) SDSS J154751.94+025550 (=SDSS J1547) is reported with very different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines: double-peaked broad H$β$ but single-peaked broad H$α$. SDSS J1547 is the first AGN with detailed discussions on very different line profiles of the broad Balmer emission lines, besides the simply mentioned different broad lines in the candidate for a binary black hole (BBH) system in SDSS J0159+0105. The very different line profiles of the broad Balmer emission lines can be well explained by different physical conditions to two central BLRs in a central BBH system in SDSS J1547. Furthermore, the long-term light curve from CSS can be well described by a sinusoidal function with a periodicity about 2159days, providing further evidence to support the expected central BBH system in SDSS J1547. Therefore, it is interesting to treat different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines as intrinsic indicators of central BBH systems in broad line AGN. Under assumptions of BBH systems, 0.125\% of broad line AGN can be expected to have very different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines. Future study on more broad line AGN with very different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines could provide further clues on the different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines as indicator of BBH systems.

Further evidence to support a tidal disruption event in the changing-look AGN SDSS J0159

In this Letter, we report further evidence to support a tidal disruption event (TDE) in the known changing-look AGN SDSS J0159, through the unique variabilities of asymmetric broad H$α$: broader but redder in 2010 than in 2000. Accepted the broad H$α$ emission regions tightly related to accreting debris in a central TDE, the well-known relativistic accretion disk origination can be applied to well explain the asymmetric broad H$α$ variabilities in SDSS J0159. Moreover, the model determined broad H$α$ emission regions have the sizes not follow the empirical R-L relation valid in normal broad line AGN, but have locations basically similar to the regions of accreting debris from a central TDE in SDSS J0159, indicating tight connections between the broad H$α$ emission materials and central TDE debris. Therefore, explanations of the asymmetric broad H$α$ variabilities through the relativistic accretion disk origination provide further clues to support a central TDE in SDSS J0159.

Powerful t-SNE technique leading to clear separation of type-2 AGN and HII galaxies in BPT diagrams

Narrow emission-line galaxies can be distinguished in the well-known BPT diagrams through narrow emission line properties. However, there are no boundaries visible to the naked eye between type-2 AGN and HII galaxies in BPT diagrams, besides the extreme dividing lines expected by theoretical photoionization models. Here, based on powerful t-SNE technique applied to the local narrow emission-line galaxies in SDSS DR15, type-2 AGN and HII galaxies can be clearly separated in the t-SNE determined two-dimensional projected map, and then the dividing lines can be mathematically determined in BPT diagrams, leading to charming harmonization of the theoretical expectations and the actual results from real observed properties. The results not only provide an interesting and robust method to determine the dividing lines in BPT diagrams through the powerful t-SNE technique, but also lead to further confirmation on previously defined composite galaxies more efficiently classified in the BPT diagram of [OIII]/H$β$ versus [NII]/H$α$.

SDSS J0159 as an outlier in the Mbh-sigma space: further clues to support a central tidal disruption event?

In this Letter, properties of black hole (BH) mass are well checked for the interesting object SDSS J0159, a changing-look AGN and also a host galaxy of a tidal disruption event (TDE). Through spectral absorption features, the stellar velocity dispersion of SDSS J0159 can be well measured as $σ\sim81~{\rm km/s}$, leading to SDSS J0159 being an apparent outlier in the \msig space, because of the BH mass estimated through the \msig relation about two magnitudes lower than the reported virial BH mass of about $10^8~{\rm M_\odot}$. After considerations of contributions of stellar debris from the central TDE to broad line emission clouds, the over-estimated virial BH mass could be well explained in SDSS J0159. Therefore, over-estimated virial BH masses through broad line properties in the \msig space could be treated as interesting clues to support central TDEs.

Effects of extended components of \oiii on the correlation between the \oiii luminosity and the power-law continuum luminosity for active galactic nuclei

In this manuscript, we check the well-known correlation between \oiii luminosity and continuum luminosity (\loiiicon) for AGN by a large sample of 1982 SDSS QSOs with $z<0.8$ and with high quality spectra. The strong correlation of \loiiicon can be found, similar as previous results for AGN. Moreover, among the 1982 QSOs, there are 708 QSOs with the [O~{\sc iii}]$λ$5007Å described by two components: one core component plus one extended component. Based on the luminosity from the core components ($L_{\rm [O~\textsc{iii}],~narrow}$) and from the extended components ($L_{\rm [O~\textsc{iii}],~ext}$), we confirm that the correlation of $L_{{\rm [O~\textsc{iii}],~ext}}~-~L_{\rm 5100\textscÅ}$ is more stronger and tighter than the correlations on the total \oiii luminosity and on the luminosity of the core components of the \oiii lines. Therefore, the luminosity of the extended components should be better applied to trace AGN intrinsic luminosity. Meanwhile, we have found strong line width correlation and line luminosity correlation between the core components and the extended components, indicating the extended components of the \oiii lines should be not due to commonly considered radial flows in the common \oiii line clouds. And virial effects due to gravity of central black holes naturally lead to the wider extended components from regions more nearer to central black holes. Finally, we can say that the reported correlation of $L_{{\rm [O~\textsc{iii}],~narrow}}~-~L_{\rm 5100\textscÅ}$ on the core components of the \oiii lines should be more better to estimate AGN intrinsic luminosity in Type-2 narrow line AGN, because of totally/partly obscured extended components.

Properties of long-term optical variability of active galactic nuclei with double-peaked broad low-ionization emission lines

In this manuscript, we study properties of long-term optical variability of a large sample of 106 SDSS spectroscopically confirmed AGN with double-peaked broad low-ionization emission lines (double-peaked emitters). The long-term optical light curves over 8 years are collected from the Catalina Sky Surveys Data Release 2. And, the Damped Random Walk (DRW) process is applied to describe the long-term variability of the double-peaked emitters. Meanwhile, the same DRW process is applied to long-term optical light curves of more than 7000 spectroscopically confirmed normal quasars in the SDSS Stripe82 Database. Then, we can find that the DRW process determined rest-frame intrinsic variability timescales $\ln(τ/{\rm days})$ are about 5.8 and about 4.8 for the double-peaked emitters and for the normal quasars, respectively. The statistically longer intrinsic variability timescales can be confirmed in the double-peaked emitters, after considerations of necessary effects, such as the effects from different distributions of redshift, BH mass and accretion rate between the double-peaked emitters and the normal quasars. Moreover, a radial dependence of accretion rate $\dot{m}_{\rm R}~\propto~R^β$ with larger values of $β$ could be an acceptable interpretation of the longer intrinsic variability timescales in the double-peaked emitters. Therefore, there are different intrinsic properties of emission regions between the double-peaked emitters and the normal quasars. The double-peaked emitters can be well treated as an unique subclass of AGN.

Apparent \oiii variability in the narrow line Seyfert I Mrk142

In this letter, we checked spectral properties of the well-known narrow line Seyfert I Mrk142, in order to try to find effects of narrow line variability on BLR radius of Mrk142 which is an outlier in the R-L plane. Although, no improvement can be found on BLR radius, apparent narrow line variability can be confirmed in Mrk142. Using the public spectra collected from the Lick AGN Monitoring Project, the spectral scaling method based on assumption of constant \oiii line is firstly checked by examining broad and narrow emission line properties. We find that with the application of the spectral scaling method, there is a strong correlation between the \oiii line flux and the \oiii line width, but weaker correlations between the broad H$α$ flux and the broad H$β$ flux, and between the broad H$α$ flux and the continuum emission at 5100Å. The results indicate that the assumption of constant \oiii line is not preferred, and caution should be exercised when applying the spectral scaling calibration method. And then, we can find a strong correlation between the \oiii line flux and the continuum emission at 5100Å, which indicates apparent short-term variability of the \oiii line in Mrk142 over about two months.

SDSS J083253.18+064316.7: one strange object with double-peaked narrow Hαbut single-peaked narrow Hβ

In this letter, we firstly report one unique object SDSS J0832+0643 with particular features of narrow balmer emission lines: double-peaked narrow Hαbut single-peaked narrow Hβ. The particular features can not be expected by currently proposed kinematic models for double-peaked narrow emission lines, because the proposed kinematic models lead to similar line profiles of narrow balmer emission lines. However, due to radiative transfer effects, the non-kinematic model can be naturally applied to well explain the particular features of narrow balmer emission lines: larger optical depth in Hαthan 10 leads to observed double-peaked narrow Hα, but smaller optical depth in Hβaround 2 leads to observed single-peaked narrow Hβ. Therefore, SDSS J0832+0643 can be used as strong evidence to support the non-kinematic model for double-peaked narrow emission lines.

Are broad optical balmer lines from central accretion disk in PG 1613+658?

In this letter, we report positive correlations between broad line width and broad line flux for the broad balmer lines of the long-term observed AGN PG 1613+658. Rather than the expected negative correlations under the widely accepted virialization assumption for AGN BLRs, the positive correlations indicate much different BLR structures of PG 1613+658 from the commonly considered BLR structures which are dominated by the equilibrium between radiation pressure and gas pressure. Therefore, accretion disk origin is preferred for the observed broad single-peaked optical balmer lines of PG 1613+658, because of the mainly gravity dominated disk-like BLRs with radial structures having few effects from radiation pressure.

Optical spectral index - luminosity relation for the 17 mapped Palomar-Green quasars

In this paper, the optical spectra index - luminosity relationship is checked for the well-known 17 individual mapped QSOs, in order to give one more clearer conclusion on the so far conflicting dependence of the spectral index on the luminosity for AGN. Different from the global relationships based on the color difference (photometry parameters) for samples of AGN, the more reliable relationship is determined for the multi-epoch observed individual mapped QSOs with no contamination from the host galaxies, the line variabilities and the much different central properties. The final confirmed results are as follows. (1): No strong dependence of the optical spectral index on the continuum luminosity can be found for all the 17 QSOs, besides two objects (PG 0026 and PG 1613) having some weak trends (with $3σ$ confidence level) for the relationship. In other words, the common sense 'AGNs get bluer when they get brighter' is not so common. (2): There are much different damped intrinsic variability time scales for the variability modes of the optical spectral index and the continuum emission, through the well applied Damped Random Walk method for the AGN variability. In other words, there are some different intrinsic mechanisms controlling the variabilities of the optical spectral index and the power law AGN continuum emission. Therefore, the much weak dependence of the optical spectral index on the continuum luminosity can be further confirmed.
