Solving Hamiltonian Constraint Equation with Physics-Informed Neural Networks

Numerical relativity (NR), solving Einstein equation numerically, plays an important role in source modelling for gravitational wave astronomy. Traditional methods for NR including finite difference method, spectral method and finite element method have been well developed. But newly developed neural network methods for partial differential equations (PDE) have not been well studied yet for NR. We present a Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) method to solve the Hamiltonian constraint equation for binary black hole (BBH) initial data in NR. This equation is a highly non-linear elliptic PDE, posing significant challenges for conventional PINN approaches. To overcome these difficulties, we introduce a set of new techniques. We show that our PINN together with these techniques can successfully solve the Hamiltonian constraint equation for generic BBH systems. Validation against the traditional results demonstrates the high accuracy and robustness of our method, revealing the immense potential of constructing a PINN-based initial data solution to all BBH systems for NR.

Angular velocity of rotating black holes -- a new way to construct initial data for binary black holes

Motivated by a geometric understanding of the angular velocity of a Kerr black hole in terms of a quasi-conformal map that describes a 2d Beltrami fluid flow, a new way to construct initial data sets for binary rotating black holes by prescribing the angular velocities of the two black holes at their horizons is discussed. A set of elliptic equations with prescribed Dirichlet boundary conditions at the horizons and at spatial infinity is established for constructing the initial data. To explore the dynamics encoded in these initial data, we consider the conformally flat three-metric case and numerically evolve it using the BSSN code for two co-rotating and counter-rotating black holes with angular velocities prescribed at the horizons. When the angular velocities are non-uniform and deviate from a constant value at the horizons, new gravitational waveforms are generated which display certain oscillatory pattern reminiscent of that of quasi-normal ringing in the inspiral phase before merger takes place.

Relativistic excitation of compact stars

In this work, we study the excitation of a compact star under the influence of external gravitational driving in the relativistic regime. Using a model setup in which a wave with constant frequency is injected from past null infinity and scattered by the star to future null infinity, we show that the scattering coefficient encodes rich information of the star. For example, the analytical structure of the scattering coefficient implies that the decay rate of a mode generally plays the role of ``star excitation factor'', similar to the ``black hole excitation factor'' previously defined for describing black hole mode excitations. With this star excitation factor we derive the transient mode excitation as a binary system crosses a generic mode resonance of a companion star during the inspiral stage. This application is useful because previous description of resonant mode excitation of stars still relies on the mode and driving force decomposition based on the Newtonian formalism. In addition, we show that the scattering phase is intimately related to the total energy of spacetime and matter under the driving of a steady input wave from infinity. We also derive the relevant tidal energy of a star under steady driving and compare that with the dynamic tide formula. We estimate that the difference may lead to $\mathcal{O}(0.5)$ radian phase modulation in the late stage of the binary neutron star inspiral waveform.

Universal gravitational self-force for a point mass orbiting around a compact star

In this work, we study the gravitational back-reaction (i.e., the "self-force") of a point mass moving around a non-rotating, compact star on a circular orbit. We find that the additional self-force, comparing with the case with a point mass orbiting around a Schwarzschild black hole, can be well characterized by an universal frequency-dependent function multiplied by the (dynamical) tidal deformability of the compact star. This finding provides the foundation for building the waveform model for an extreme mass-ratio inspiral system around a star-like black hole mimicker, which is relevant for testing General Relativity and exotic compact objects with space-borne gravitational wave detectors.

Geometric Inequality for Axisymmetric Black Holes With Angular Momentum

In an effort to understand the Penrose inequality for black holes with angular momentum, an axisymmetric, vacuum, asymptotically Euclidean initial data set subject to certain quasi-stationary conditions is considered for a case study. A new geometric definition of angular velocity of a rotating black hole is defined in terms of the momentum constraint, without any reference to a stationary Killing vector field. The momentum constraint is then shown to be equivalent to the dynamics of a two-dimensional steady compressible fluid flow governed by a quasi-conformal mapping. In terms of spinors, a generalised first law for rotating black holes (possibly with multi-connected horizon located along the symmetry axis) is then proven and may be regarded as a Penrose-type inequality for black holes with angular momentum.

Black-Hole Perturbation Plus Post-Newtonian Theory: Hybrid Waveform for Neutron Star Binaries

We consider the motion of nonspinning, compact objects orbiting around a Kerr black hole with tidal couplings. The tide-induced quadrupole moment modifies both the orbital energy and outgoing fluxes, so that over the inspiral timescale there is an accumulative shift in the orbital and gravitational wave phase. Previous studies on compact object tidal effects have been carried out in the Post-Newtonian (PN) and Effective-One-Body (EOB) formalisms. In this work, within the black hole perturbation framework, we propose to characterize the tidal influence in the expansion of mass ratios, while higher-order PN corrections are naturally included. For the equatorial and circular orbit, we derive the leading order, frequency dependent tidal phase shift which agrees with the Post-Newtonian result at low frequencies but deviates at high frequencies. We also find that such phase shift has weak dependence ($\le 10\%$) on the spin of the primary black hole. Combining this black hole perturbation waveform with the Post-Newtonian waveform, we propose a frequency-domain, hybrid waveform that shows comparable accuracy as the EOB waveform in characterizing the tidal effects, as calibrated by numerical relativity simulations. Further improvement is expected as the next-leading order in mass ratio and the higher-PN tidal corrections are included. This hybrid approach is also applicable for generating binary black hole waveforms.
