Distribution and evolution of Li abundance in red clump stars can be explained by the internal gravity waves

The study of Li phenomena in red clump (RC) stars can give us a deeper understanding of the structure and evolution of stars. \citet{2022ApJ...933...58C} explained the RC Li abundance distributions naturally using only standard post main sequence (MS) Li evolution models when the distribution of progenitor masses and the depletion of Li during the MS observed in MS stars were considered, thus neither extra Li depletion nor Li creation mechanism is required. Nevertheless, it is interesting to consider the effects of mixing caused by some extra mechanisms. By constructing different models, we find that the mixing caused by internal gravity waves can explain the observed Li abundances of RC stars with low mass progenitors. To explain that, we rely on the extra mixing induced by internal gravity waves that are excited at the bottom of the convective envelope at the red giant branch (RGB) stage. During the RGB stage, introducing the internal gravity waves can improve the diffusion coefficient and strengthen the mixing effect. The effective enrichment of Li occurs at the late RGB stage and requires the diffusion coefficient of H-burning shell to reach $\rm \sim 10^{8}\,cm^{2}\,s^{-1}$. Our models predict that the Li abundance decreases from $\rm \sim 1.5\,dex$ to $\rm \sim 0.0\,dex$ at the end of core He-burning stage, thereby revealing the $\sim 99\%$ of the observed Li abundance distribution. The thermohaline mixing regulates the Li abundance of RGB stars, which combines with the internal gravity waves can explain the Li abundances of most giants.

Convective Mixing: The Formation Channel of Li-rich Giants

Increasing observed data indicate that part of giants has abnormally high lithium (Li) inside their surface, and their proportion is around 1%. Instead of pursuing the feasible mechanisms for extra Li enrichment, we focus on how to inhibit Li depletion from the main sequence (MS) phase of giants. With this in mind, we find that convective mixing is capable of achieving this goal and forming Li-rich giants, which is mainly attributed to the convection model with the convective boundary defined by the Ledoux criterion. Another factor in the formation of Li-rich giants in our convection models is related to the Li abundances of their progenitors. If the Li abundances of the progenitors exceed the meteoritic value (3.3 dex), then the majority of giants will be rich in Li. This is the general pattern of stellar Li abundance evolution without factoring in extra Li depletion. We propose that other Li depletion processes should also be adopted in the future, as they may be the key to the 1% puzzle.

Survey of Magnetic Field Parameters Associated With Large Solar Flares

Until now, how the magnetic fields in M/X-class flaring active regions (ARs) differ from C-class flaring ARs remains unclear. Here, we calculate the key magnetic field parameters within the area of high photospheric free energy density (HED region) for 323 ARs (217 C- and 106 M$/$X-flaring ARs), including total photospheric free magnetic energy density E$_{free}$, total unsigned magnetic flux $Φ$$_{HED}$, mean unsigned current helicity h$_{c}$, length of the polarity inversion lines $L$$_{PIL}$ with a steep horizontal magnetic gradient, etc., and compare these with flare/coronal mass ejection (CME) properties. We first show the quantitative relations among the flare intensity, the eruptive character and $Φ$$_{HED}$. We reveal that $Φ$$_{HED}$ is a measure for the GOES flux upper limit of the flares in a given region. For a given $Φ$$_{HED}$, there exists the lower limit of F$_\mathrm{SXR}$ for eruptive flares. This means that only the relatively strong flares with the large fraction of energy release compared to the total free energy are likely to generate a CME. We also find that the combinations of E$_{free}$-$L$$_{PIL}$ and E$_{free}$-h$_{c}$ present a good ability to distinguish between C-class and M$/$X-class flaring ARs. Using determined critical values of E$_{free}$ and $L$$_{PIL}$, one predicts correctly 93 out of 106 M/X-class flaring ARs and 159/217 C-class flaring ARs. The large $L$$_{PIL}$ or h$_{c}$ for M$/$X-class flaring ARs probably implies the presence of a compact current with twisted magnetic fields winding about it.

MultiSPANS: A Multi-range Spatial-Temporal Transformer Network for Traffic Forecast via Structural Entropy Optimization

Traffic forecasting is a complex multivariate time-series regression task of paramount importance for traffic management and planning. However, existing approaches often struggle to model complex multi-range dependencies using local spatiotemporal features and road network hierarchical knowledge. To address this, we propose MultiSPANS. First, considering that an individual recording point cannot reflect critical spatiotemporal local patterns, we design multi-filter convolution modules for generating informative ST-token embeddings to facilitate attention computation. Then, based on ST-token and spatial-temporal position encoding, we employ the Transformers to capture long-range temporal and spatial dependencies. Furthermore, we introduce structural entropy theory to optimize the spatial attention mechanism. Specifically, The structural entropy minimization algorithm is used to generate optimal road network hierarchies, i.e., encoding trees. Based on this, we propose a relative structural entropy-based position encoding and a multi-head attention masking scheme based on multi-layer encoding trees. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the presented framework over several state-of-the-art methods in real-world traffic datasets, and the longer historical windows are effectively utilized. The code is available at https://github.com/SELGroup/MultiSPANS.

Multiple-Carrier-Lifetime Model for Carrier Dynamics in InGaN/GaN LEDs with Non-Uniform Carrier Distribution

We introduce a multiple-carrier-lifetime model (MCLM) for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with non-uniform carrier distribution, such as in multiple-quantum-well (MQW) structures. By employing the MCLM, we successfully explain the modulation response of V-pit engineered MQW LEDs, which exhibit an S21 roll-off slower than -20 dB/decade. Using the proposed model and employing a gradient descent method, we extract effective recombination and escape lifetimes by averaging the carrier behavior across the quantum wells. Our results reveal slower effective carrier recombination and escape in MQW LEDs compared with LEDs emitting from a single QW, indicating the advantages of lower carrier density achieved through V-pit engineering. Notably, the effective carrier recombination time is more than one order of magnitude lower than the effective escape lifetime, suggesting that most carriers in the quantum wells recombine, while the escape process remains weak. To ensure the reliability and robustness of the MCLM, we subject it to a comprehensive three-fold validation process. This work confirms the positive impact of spreading carriers into several QWs through V-pit engineering. In addition, the MCLM is applicable to other LEDs with non-uniform carrier distribution, such as micro-LEDs with significant surface recombination and non-uniform lateral carrier profiles.

A Multi-Task Semantic Decomposition Framework with Task-specific Pre-training for Few-Shot NER

The objective of few-shot named entity recognition is to identify named entities with limited labeled instances. Previous works have primarily focused on optimizing the traditional token-wise classification framework, while neglecting the exploration of information based on NER data characteristics. To address this issue, we propose a Multi-Task Semantic Decomposition Framework via Joint Task-specific Pre-training (MSDP) for few-shot NER. Drawing inspiration from demonstration-based and contrastive learning, we introduce two novel pre-training tasks: Demonstration-based Masked Language Modeling (MLM) and Class Contrastive Discrimination. These tasks effectively incorporate entity boundary information and enhance entity representation in Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs). In the downstream main task, we introduce a multi-task joint optimization framework with the semantic decomposing method, which facilitates the model to integrate two different semantic information for entity classification. Experimental results of two few-shot NER benchmarks demonstrate that MSDP consistently outperforms strong baselines by a large margin. Extensive analyses validate the effectiveness and generalization of MSDP.

Generative Zero-Shot Prompt Learning for Cross-Domain Slot Filling with Inverse Prompting

Zero-shot cross-domain slot filling aims to transfer knowledge from the labeled source domain to the unlabeled target domain. Existing models either encode slot descriptions and examples or design handcrafted question templates using heuristic rules, suffering from poor generalization capability or robustness. In this paper, we propose a generative zero-shot prompt learning framework for cross-domain slot filling, both improving generalization and robustness than previous work. Besides, we introduce a novel inverse prompting strategy to distinguish different slot types to avoid the multiple prediction problem, and an efficient prompt-tuning strategy to boost higher performance by only training fewer prompt parameters. Experiments and analysis demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework, especially huge improvements (+13.44% F1) on the unseen slots.

A Prototypical Semantic Decoupling Method via Joint Contrastive Learning for Few-Shot Name Entity Recognition

Few-shot named entity recognition (NER) aims at identifying named entities based on only few labeled instances. Most existing prototype-based sequence labeling models tend to memorize entity mentions which would be easily confused by close prototypes. In this paper, we proposed a Prototypical Semantic Decoupling method via joint Contrastive learning (PSDC) for few-shot NER. Specifically, we decouple class-specific prototypes and contextual semantic prototypes by two masking strategies to lead the model to focus on two different semantic information for inference. Besides, we further introduce joint contrastive learning objectives to better integrate two kinds of decoupling information and prevent semantic collapse. Experimental results on two few-shot NER benchmarks demonstrate that PSDC consistently outperforms the previous SOTA methods in terms of overall performance. Extensive analysis further validates the effectiveness and generalization of PSDC.

Revisit Out-Of-Vocabulary Problem for Slot Filling: A Unified Contrastive Frameword with Multi-level Data Augmentations

In real dialogue scenarios, the existing slot filling model, which tends to memorize entity patterns, has a significantly reduced generalization facing Out-of-Vocabulary (OOV) problems. To address this issue, we propose an OOV robust slot filling model based on multi-level data augmentations to solve the OOV problem from both word and slot perspectives. We present a unified contrastive learning framework, which pull representations of the origin sample and augmentation samples together, to make the model resistant to OOV problems. We evaluate the performance of the model from some specific slots and carefully design test data with OOV word perturbation to further demonstrate the effectiveness of OOV words. Experiments on two datasets show that our approach outperforms the previous sota methods in terms of both OOV slots and words.

Origin of the injection-dependent emission blueshift and linewidth broadening of III-nitride light-emitting diodes

III-nitride light-emitting diodes (LEDs) exhibit an injection-dependent emission blueshift and linewidth broadening that is severely detrimental to their color purity. Using first-principles multi-scale modelling that accurately captures the competition between polarization-charge screening, phase-space filling, and many-body plasma renormalization, we explain the current-dependent spectral characteristics of polar III-nitride LEDs fabricated with state-of-the-art quantum wells. Our analysis uncovers a fundamental connection between carrier dynamics and the injection-dependent spectral characteristics of light-emitting materials. For example, polar III-nitride LEDs offer poor control over their injection-dependent color purity due to their poor hole transport and slow carrier recombination dynamics, which forces them to operate at or near degenerate carrier densities. Designs that accelerate carrier recombination and transport and reduce the carrier density required to operate LEDs at a given current density lessen their injection-dependent wavelength shift and linewidth broadening.

PSSAT: A Perturbed Semantic Structure Awareness Transferring Method for Perturbation-Robust Slot Filling

Most existing slot filling models tend to memorize inherent patterns of entities and corresponding contexts from training data. However, these models can lead to system failure or undesirable outputs when being exposed to spoken language perturbation or variation in practice. We propose a perturbed semantic structure awareness transferring method for training perturbation-robust slot filling models. Specifically, we introduce two MLM-based training strategies to respectively learn contextual semantic structure and word distribution from unsupervised language perturbation corpus. Then, we transfer semantic knowledge learned from upstream training procedure into the original samples and filter generated data by consistency processing. These procedures aim to enhance the robustness of slot filling models. Experimental results show that our method consistently outperforms the previous basic methods and gains strong generalization while preventing the model from memorizing inherent patterns of entities and contexts.

Eccentric Regularization: Minimizing Hyperspherical Energy without explicit projection

Several regularization methods have recently been introduced which force the latent activations of an autoencoder or deep neural network to conform to either a Gaussian or hyperspherical distribution, or to minimize the implicit rank of the distribution in latent space. In the present work, we introduce a novel regularizing loss function which simulates a pairwise repulsive force between items and an attractive force of each item toward the origin. We show that minimizing this loss function in isolation achieves a hyperspherical distribution. Moreover, when used as a regularizing term, the scaling factor can be adjusted to allow greater flexibility and tolerance of eccentricity, thus allowing the latent variables to be stratified according to their relative importance, while still promoting diversity. We apply this method of Eccentric Regularization to an autoencoder, and demonstrate its effectiveness in image generation, representation learning and downstream classification tasks.

A Robust Contrastive Alignment Method For Multi-Domain Text Classification

Multi-domain text classification can automatically classify texts in various scenarios. Due to the diversity of human languages, texts with the same label in different domains may differ greatly, which brings challenges to the multi-domain text classification. Current advanced methods use the private-shared paradigm, capturing domain-shared features by a shared encoder, and training a private encoder for each domain to extract domain-specific features. However, in realistic scenarios, these methods suffer from inefficiency as new domains are constantly emerging. In this paper, we propose a robust contrastive alignment method to align text classification features of various domains in the same feature space by supervised contrastive learning. By this means, we only need two universal feature extractors to achieve multi-domain text classification. Extensive experimental results show that our method performs on par with or sometimes better than the state-of-the-art method, which uses the complex multi-classifier in a private-shared framework.

Provably End-to-end Label-Noise Learning without Anchor Points

In label-noise learning, the transition matrix plays a key role in building statistically consistent classifiers. Existing consistent estimators for the transition matrix have been developed by exploiting anchor points. However, the anchor-point assumption is not always satisfied in real scenarios. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end framework for solving label-noise learning without anchor points, in which we simultaneously optimize two objectives: the cross entropy loss between the noisy label and the predicted probability by the neural network, and the volume of the simplex formed by the columns of the transition matrix. Our proposed framework can identify the transition matrix if the clean class-posterior probabilities are sufficiently scattered. This is by far the mildest assumption under which the transition matrix is provably identifiable and the learned classifier is statistically consistent. Experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

Bridge to Target Domain by Prototypical Contrastive Learning and Label Confusion: Re-explore Zero-Shot Learning for Slot Filling

Zero-shot cross-domain slot filling alleviates the data dependence in the case of data scarcity in the target domain, which has aroused extensive research. However, as most of the existing methods do not achieve effective knowledge transfer to the target domain, they just fit the distribution of the seen slot and show poor performance on unseen slot in the target domain. To solve this, we propose a novel approach based on prototypical contrastive learning with a dynamic label confusion strategy for zero-shot slot filling. The prototypical contrastive learning aims to reconstruct the semantic constraints of labels, and we introduce the label confusion strategy to establish the label dependence between the source domains and the target domain on-the-fly. Experimental results show that our model achieves significant improvement on the unseen slots, while also set new state-of-the-arts on slot filling task.

The Sequential Algorithm for Combined State of Charge and State of Health Estimation of Lithium Ion Battery based on Active Current Injection

When State of Charge, State of Health, and parameters of the Lithium-ion battery are estimated simultaneously, the estimation accuracy is hard to be ensured due to uncertainties in the estimation process. To improve the estimation performance a sequential algorithm, which uses frequency scale separation and estimates parameters/states sequentially by injecting currents with different frequencies, is proposed in this paper. Specifically, by incorporating a high-pass filter, the parameters can be independently characterized by injecting high-frequency and medium-frequency currents, respectively. Using the estimated parameters, battery capacity and State of Charge can then be estimated concurrently. Experimental results show that the estimation accuracy of the proposed sequential algorithm is much better than the concurrent algorithm where all parameters/states are estimated simultaneously, and the computational cost can also be reduced. Finally, experiments are conducted under different temperatures to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for various battery capacities.
