A novel route to cyclic dominance in voluntary social dilemmas

Cooperation is the backbone of modern human societies, making it a priority to understand how successful cooperation-sustaining mechanisms operate. Cyclic dominance, a non-transitive setup comprising at least three strategies wherein the first strategy overrules the second which overrules the third which, in turn, overrules the first strategy, is known to maintain bio-diversity, drive competition between bacterial strains, and preserve cooperation in social dilemmas. Here, we present a novel route to cyclic dominance in voluntary social dilemmas by adding to the traditional mix of cooperators, defectors, and loners, a fourth player type, risk-averse hedgers, who enact tit-for-tat upon paying a hedging cost to avoid being exploited. When this cost is sufficiently small, cooperators, defectors, and hedgers enter a loop of cyclic dominance that preserves cooperation even under the most adverse conditions. In contrast, when the hedging cost is large, hedgers disappear, consequently reverting to the traditional interplay of cooperators, defectors, and loners. In the interim region of hedging costs, complex evolutionary dynamics ensues, prompting transitions between states with two, three, or four competing strategies. Our results thus reveal that voluntary participation is but one pathway to sustained cooperation via cyclic dominance.

Spatial-Spectral Residual Network for Hyperspectral Image Super-Resolution

Deep learning-based hyperspectral image super-resolution (SR) methods have achieved great success recently. However, most existing models can not effectively explore spatial information and spectral information between bands simultaneously, obtaining relatively low performance. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel spectral-spatial residual network for hyperspectral image super-resolution (SSRNet). Our method can effectively explore spatial-spectral information by using 3D convolution instead of 2D convolution, which enables the network to better extract potential information. Furthermore, we design a spectral-spatial residual module (SSRM) to adaptively learn more effective features from all the hierarchical features in units through local feature fusion, significantly improving the performance of the algorithm. In each unit, we employ spatial and temporal separable 3D convolution to extract spatial and spectral information, which not only reduces unaffordable memory usage and high computational cost, but also makes the network easier to train. Extensive evaluations and comparisons on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves superior performance in comparison to existing state-of-the-art methods.

Robust and Efficient Fuzzy C-Means Clustering Constrained on Flexible Sparsity

Clustering is an effective technique in data mining to group a set of objects in terms of some attributes. Among various clustering approaches, the family of K-Means algorithms gains popularity due to simplicity and efficiency. However, most of existing K-Means based clustering algorithms cannot deal with outliers well and are difficult to efficiently solve the problem embedded the $L_0$-norm constraint. To address the above issues and improve the performance of clustering significantly, we propose a novel clustering algorithm, named REFCMFS, which develops a $L_{2,1}$-norm robust loss as the data-driven item and imposes a $L_0$-norm constraint on the membership matrix to make the model more robust and sparse flexibly. In particular, REFCMFS designs a new way to simplify and solve the $L_0$-norm constraint without any approximate transformation by absorbing $\|\cdot\|_0$ into the objective function through a ranking function. These improvements not only make REFCMFS efficiently obtain more promising performance but also provide a new tractable and skillful optimization method to solve the problem embedded the $L_0$-norm constraint. Theoretical analyses and extensive experiments on several public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and rationality of our proposed REFCMFS method.

Meta Learning for Task-Driven Video Summarization

Existing video summarization approaches mainly concentrate on sequential or structural characteristic of video data. However, they do not pay enough attention to the video summarization task itself. In this paper, we propose a meta learning method for performing task-driven video summarization, denoted by MetaL-TDVS, to explicitly explore the video summarization mechanism among summarizing processes on different videos. Particularly, MetaL-TDVS aims to excavate the latent mechanism for summarizing video by reformulating video summarization as a meta learning problem and promote generalization ability of the trained model. MetaL-TDVS regards summarizing each video as a single task to make better use of the experience and knowledge learned from processes of summarizing other videos to summarize new ones. Furthermore, MetaL-TDVS updates models via a two-fold back propagation which forces the model optimized on one video to obtain high accuracy on another video in every training step. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority and better generalization ability of MetaL-TDVS against several state-of-the-art methods.

An Iteratively Re-weighted Method for Problems with Sparsity-Inducing Norms

This work aims at solving the problems with intractable sparsity-inducing norms that are often encountered in various machine learning tasks, such as multi-task learning, subspace clustering, feature selection, robust principal component analysis, and so on. Specifically, an Iteratively Re-Weighted method (IRW) with solid convergence guarantee is provided. We investigate its convergence speed via numerous experiments on real data. Furthermore, in order to validate the practicality of IRW, we use it to solve a concrete robust feature selection model with complicated objective function. The experimental results show that the model coupled with proposed optimization method outperforms alternative methods significantly.

Intrinsic Weight Learning Approach for Multi-view Clustering

Exploiting different representations, or views, of the same object for better clustering has become very popular these days, which is conventionally called multi-view clustering. Generally, it is essential to measure the importance of each individual view, due to some noises, or inherent capacities in description. Many previous works model the view importance as weight, which is simple but effective empirically. In this paper, instead of following the traditional thoughts, we propose a new weight learning paradigm in context of multi-view clustering in virtue of the idea of re-weighted approach, and we theoretically analyze its working mechanism. Meanwhile, as a carefully achieved example, all of the views are connected by exploring a unified Laplacian rank constrained graph, which will be a representative method to compare with other weight learning approaches in experiments. Furthermore, the proposed weight learning strategy is much suitable for multi-view data, and it can be naturally integrated with many existing clustering learners. According to the numerical experiments, the proposed intrinsic weight learning approach is proved effective and practical to use in multi-view clustering.

Vision-to-Language Tasks Based on Attributes and Attention Mechanism

Vision-to-language tasks aim to integrate computer vision and natural language processing together, which has attracted the attention of many researchers. For typical approaches, they encode image into feature representations and decode it into natural language sentences. While they neglect high-level semantic concepts and subtle relationships between image regions and natural language elements. To make full use of these information, this paper attempt to exploit the text guided attention and semantic-guided attention (SA) to find the more correlated spatial information and reduce the semantic gap between vision and language. Our method includes two level attention networks. One is the text-guided attention network which is used to select the text-related regions. The other is SA network which is used to highlight the concept-related regions and the region-related concepts. At last, all these information are incorporated to generate captions or answers. Practically, image captioning and visual question answering experiments have been carried out, and the experimental results have shown the excellent performance of the proposed approach.

Learning Feature Sparse Principal Components

This paper presents new algorithms to solve the feature-sparsity constrained PCA problem (FSPCA), which performs feature selection and PCA simultaneously. Existing optimization methods for FSPCA require data distribution assumptions and are lack of global convergence guarantee. Though the general FSPCA problem is NP-hard, we show that, for a low-rank covariance, FSPCA can be solved globally (Algorithm 1). Then, we propose another strategy (Algorithm 2) to solve FSPCA for the general covariance by iteratively building a carefully designed proxy. We prove theoretical guarantees on approximation and convergence for the new algorithms. Experimental results show the promising performance of the new algorithms compared with the state-of-the-arts on both synthetic and real-world datasets.

PCC Net: Perspective Crowd Counting via Spatial Convolutional Network

Crowd counting from a single image is a challenging task due to high appearance similarity, perspective changes and severe congestion. Many methods only focus on the local appearance features and they cannot handle the aforementioned challenges. In order to tackle them, we propose a Perspective Crowd Counting Network (PCC Net), which consists of three parts: 1) Density Map Estimation (DME) focuses on learning very local features for density map estimation; 2) Random High-level Density Classification (R-HDC) extracts global features to predict the coarse density labels of random patches in images; 3) Fore-/Background Segmentation (FBS) encodes mid-level features to segments the foreground and background. Besides, the DULR module is embedded in PCC Net to encode the perspective changes on four directions (Down, Up, Left and Right). The proposed PCC Net is verified on five mainstream datasets, which achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the one and attains the competitive results on the other four datasets. The source code is available at https://github.com/gjy3035/PCC-Net.

Locality and Structure Regularized Low Rank Representation for Hyperspectral Image Classification

Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification, which aims to assign an accurate label for hyperspectral pixels, has drawn great interest in recent years. Although low rank representation (LRR) has been used to classify HSI, its ability to segment each class from the whole HSI data has not been exploited fully yet. LRR has a good capacity to capture the underlying lowdimensional subspaces embedded in original data. However, there are still two drawbacks for LRR. First, LRR does not consider the local geometric structure within data, which makes the local correlation among neighboring data easily ignored. Second, the representation obtained by solving LRR is not discriminative enough to separate different data. In this paper, a novel locality and structure regularized low rank representation (LSLRR) model is proposed for HSI classification. To overcome the above limitations, we present locality constraint criterion (LCC) and structure preserving strategy (SPS) to improve the classical LRR. Specifically, we introduce a new distance metric, which combines both spatial and spectral features, to explore the local similarity of pixels. Thus, the global and local structures of HSI data can be exploited sufficiently. Besides, we propose a structure constraint to make the representation have a near block-diagonal structure. This helps to determine the final classification labels directly. Extensive experiments have been conducted on three popular HSI datasets. And the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed LSLRR outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.

GETNET: A General End-to-end Two-dimensional CNN Framework for Hyperspectral Image Change Detection

Change detection (CD) is an important application of remote sensing, which provides timely change information about large-scale Earth surface. With the emergence of hyperspectral imagery, CD technology has been greatly promoted, as hyperspectral data with the highspectral resolution are capable of detecting finer changes than using the traditional multispectral imagery. Nevertheless, the high dimension of hyperspectral data makes it difficult to implement traditional CD algorithms. Besides, endmember abundance information at subpixel level is often not fully utilized. In order to better handle high dimension problem and explore abundance information, this paper presents a General End-to-end Two-dimensional CNN (GETNET) framework for hyperspectral image change detection (HSI-CD). The main contributions of this work are threefold: 1) Mixed-affinity matrix that integrates subpixel representation is introduced to mine more cross-channel gradient features and fuse multi-source information; 2) 2-D CNN is designed to learn the discriminative features effectively from multi-source data at a higher level and enhance the generalization ability of the proposed CD algorithm; 3) A new HSI-CD data set is designed for the objective comparison of different methods. Experimental results on real hyperspectral data sets demonstrate the proposed method outperforms most of the state-of-the-arts.

Optimal Clustering Framework for Hyperspectral Band Selection

Band selection, by choosing a set of representative bands in hyperspectral image (HSI), is an effective method to reduce the redundant information without compromising the original contents. Recently, various unsupervised band selection methods have been proposed, but most of them are based on approximation algorithms which can only obtain suboptimal solutions toward a specific objective function. This paper focuses on clustering-based band selection, and proposes a new framework to solve the above dilemma, claiming the following contributions: 1) An optimal clustering framework (OCF), which can obtain the optimal clustering result for a particular form of objective function under a reasonable constraint. 2) A rank on clusters strategy (RCS), which provides an effective criterion to select bands on existing clustering structure. 3) An automatic method to determine the number of the required bands, which can better evaluate the distinctive information produced by certain number of bands. In experiments, the proposed algorithm is compared to some state-of-the-art competitors. According to the experimental results, the proposed algorithm is robust and significantly outperform the other methods on various data sets.

Hierarchical Recurrent Neural Network for Video Summarization

Exploiting the temporal dependency among video frames or subshots is very important for the task of video summarization. Practically, RNN is good at temporal dependency modeling, and has achieved overwhelming performance in many video-based tasks, such as video captioning and classification. However, RNN is not capable enough to handle the video summarization task, since traditional RNNs, including LSTM, can only deal with short videos, while the videos in the summarization task are usually in longer duration. To address this problem, we propose a hierarchical recurrent neural network for video summarization, called H-RNN in this paper. Specifically, it has two layers, where the first layer is utilized to encode short video subshots cut from the original video, and the final hidden state of each subshot is input to the second layer for calculating its confidence to be a key subshot. Compared to traditional RNNs, H-RNN is more suitable to video summarization, since it can exploit long temporal dependency among frames, meanwhile, the computation operations are significantly lessened. The results on two popular datasets, including the Combined dataset and VTW dataset, have demonstrated that the proposed H-RNN outperforms the state-of-the-arts.

Robust subspace clustering by Cauchy loss function

Subspace clustering is a problem of exploring the low-dimensional subspaces of high-dimensional data. State-of-the-arts approaches are designed by following the model of spectral clustering based method. These methods pay much attention to learn the representation matrix to construct a suitable similarity matrix and overlook the influence of the noise term on subspace clustering. However, the real data are always contaminated by the noise and the noise usually has a complicated statistical distribution. To alleviate this problem, we in this paper propose a subspace clustering method based on Cauchy loss function (CLF). Particularly, it uses CLF to penalize the noise term for suppressing the large noise mixed in the real data. This is due to that the CLF's influence function has a upper bound which can alleviate the influence of a single sample, especially the sample with a large noise, on estimating the residuals. Furthermore, we theoretically prove the grouping effect of our proposed method, which means that highly correlated data can be grouped together. Finally, experimental results on five real datasets reveal that our proposed method outperforms several representative clustering methods.

Learning to Rank for Blind Image Quality Assessment

Blind image quality assessment (BIQA) aims to predict perceptual image quality scores without access to reference images. State-of-the-art BIQA methods typically require subjects to score a large number of images to train a robust model. However, subjective quality scores are imprecise, biased, and inconsistent, and it is challenging to obtain a large scale database, or to extend existing databases, because of the inconvenience of collecting images, training the subjects, conducting subjective experiments, and realigning human quality evaluations. To combat these limitations, this paper explores and exploits preference image pairs (PIPs) such as "the quality of image $I_a$ is better than that of image $I_b$" for training a robust BIQA model. The preference label, representing the relative quality of two images, is generally precise and consistent, and is not sensitive to image content, distortion type, or subject identity; such PIPs can be generated at very low cost. The proposed BIQA method is one of learning to rank. We first formulate the problem of learning the mapping from the image features to the preference label as one of classification. In particular, we investigate the utilization of a multiple kernel learning algorithm based on group lasso (MKLGL) to provide a solution. A simple but effective strategy to estimate perceptual image quality scores is then presented. Experiments show that the proposed BIQA method is highly effective and achieves comparable performance to state-of-the-art BIQA algorithms. Moreover, the proposed method can be easily extended to new distortion categories.

A General Framework for Edited Video and Raw Video Summarization

In this paper, we build a general summarization framework for both of edited video and raw video summarization. Overall, our work can be divided into three folds: 1) Four models are designed to capture the properties of video summaries, i.e., containing important people and objects (importance), representative to the video content (representativeness), no similar key-shots (diversity) and smoothness of the storyline (storyness). Specifically, these models are applicable to both edited videos and raw videos. 2) A comprehensive score function is built with the weighted combination of the aforementioned four models. Note that the weights of the four models in the score function, denoted as property-weight, are learned in a supervised manner. Besides, the property-weights are learned for edited videos and raw videos, respectively. 3) The training set is constructed with both edited videos and raw videos in order to make up the lack of training data. Particularly, each training video is equipped with a pair of mixing-coefficients which can reduce the structure mess in the training set caused by the rough mixture. We test our framework on three datasets, including edited videos, short raw videos and long raw videos. Experimental results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

A CNN-RNN Architecture for Multi-Label Weather Recognition

Weather Recognition plays an important role in our daily lives and many computer vision applications. However, recognizing the weather conditions from a single image remains challenging and has not been studied thoroughly. Generally, most previous works treat weather recognition as a single-label classification task, namely, determining whether an image belongs to a specific weather class or not. This treatment is not always appropriate, since more than one weather conditions may appear simultaneously in a single image. To address this problem, we make the first attempt to view weather recognition as a multi-label classification task, i.e., assigning an image more than one labels according to the displayed weather conditions. Specifically, a CNN-RNN based multi-label classification approach is proposed in this paper. The convolutional neural network (CNN) is extended with a channel-wise attention model to extract the most correlated visual features. The Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) further processes the features and excavates the dependencies among weather classes. Finally, the weather labels are predicted step by step. Besides, we construct two datasets for the weather recognition task and explore the relationships among different weather conditions. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed approach. The new constructed datasets will be available at https://github.com/wzgwzg/Multi-Label-Weather-Recognition.

3G structure for image caption generation

It is a big challenge of computer vision to make machine automatically describe the content of an image with a natural language sentence. Previous works have made great progress on this task, but they only use the global or local image feature, which may lose some important subtle or global information of an image. In this paper, we propose a model with 3-gated model which fuses the global and local image features together for the task of image caption generation. The model mainly has three gated structures. 1) Gate for the global image feature, which can adaptively decide when and how much the global image feature should be imported into the sentence generator. 2) The gated recurrent neural network (RNN) is used as the sentence generator. 3) The gated feedback method for stacking RNN is employed to increase the capability of nonlinearity fitting. More specially, the global and local image features are combined together in this paper, which makes full use of the image information. The global image feature is controlled by the first gate and the local image feature is selected by the attention mechanism. With the latter two gates, the relationship between image and text can be well explored, which improves the performance of the language part as well as the multi-modal embedding part. Experimental results show that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art for image caption generation.
