Antiferromagnetic Ordering Enhanced Magnetic Damping in Mn2Au/CoFeB Bilayers

Antiferromagnets (AFMs) hold significant potential for spintronic devices owing to their insensitivity to external magnetic fields and the absence of stray fields. Beyond these inherent advantages, an AFM can manipulate the magnetic dynamics of a ferromagnet (FM) layer in AFM/FM bilayers, whereas the mechanism of such manipulation remains controversial. Here, we investigate the magnetic dynamics of AFM/FM Mn2Au/CoFeB bilayers via Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR). It is found that the Néel temperature of 2-nm-thick Mn2Au is as low as ~40 K, in sharp contrast to that of bulk Mn2Au, which exceeds 1000 K. In the Mn2Au(2 nm)/CoFeB(4 nm) bilayer, the magnetic damping $α$ of the CoFeB layer increases from 0.013 to 0.047 as temperature decreases from 160 K to 10 K, accompanied by a synchronous increase in the exchange coupling field H_rot. Such an increase in $α$ is attributed to the enhanced spin angular momentum transfer from CoFeB to Mn2Au, mediated through AFM-FM exchange coupling between Mn2Au and CoFeB, which is enhanced by the Mn2Au antiferromagnetic ordering as the temperature decreases. Our study provides deeper insights into AFM/FM dynamics and spintronic storage technology.

Surface ferrimagnetic order in RuO2 film

RuO2, widely proposed as a prototypical altermagnet, remains intensely debated with regard to its magnetic nature. Here, we demonstrate that RuO2 is non-magnetic in the bulk, but possesses a spontaneous surface ferrimagnetic order. Using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we directly detect a narrow surface state with identical spin polarizations at opposite momenta and at the Brillouin-zone center, incompatible with the spin texture of any altermagnetic order. First-principles calculations identify the non-magnetic bulk state and reveal that the detected magnetism is confined to the fully oxygen-terminated surface, where the charge transfer from Ru to O at surface triggers a ferrimagnetic alignment between adjacent Ru sublattices with antiparallel moments of +0.48 uB and -0.04 uB. Our findings provide a unified explanation reconciling debating reports on the magnetism of RuO2, establishing surface ferrimagnetism as the origin of the observed magnetic signals, and distinguishing it unambiguously from altermagnetism.

Anisotropic ultrafast spin/valley dynamics in WTe2 films

WTe2 Weyl semimetal hosts the natural broken inversion symmetry and strong spin orbit coupling, making it promising for exotic spin/valley dynamics within a picosecond timescale. Here, we unveil an anisotropic ultrafast spin/valley dynamics in centimeter-scale, single-crystalline Td-WTe2 films using a femtosecond pump-probe technique at room temperature. We observe a transient (~0.8 ps) intra-valley transition and a subsequent polarization duration (~5 ps) during the whole spin/valley relaxation process. Furthermore, the relaxation exhibits the remarkable anisotropy of approximately six-fold and two-fold symmetries due to the intrinsic anisotropy along the crystalline orientation and the extrinsic matrix element effect, respectively. Our results offer a prospect for the ultrafast manipulation of spin/valleytronics in topological quantum materials for dissipationless high-speed spin/valleytronic devices.

Enhancement of intrinsic magnetic damping in defect-free epitaxial Fe3O4 thin films

We have investigated the magnetic damping of precessional spin dynamics in defect-controlled epitaxial grown Fe$_3$O$_4$(111)/Yttria-stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) nanoscale films by all-optical pump-probe measurements. The intrinsic damping constant of the defect-free Fe$_3$O$_4$ film is found to be strikingly larger than that of the as-grown Fe$_3$O$_4$ film with structural defects. We demonstrate that the population of the first-order perpendicular standing spin wave (PSSW) mode, which is exclusively observed in the defect-free film under sufficiently high external magnetic fields, leads to the enhancement of the magnetic damping of the uniform precession (Kittel) mode. We propose a physical picture in which the PSSW mode acts as an additional channel for the extra energy dissipation of the Kittel mode. The energy transfer from Kittel mode to PSSW mode increases as in-plane magnetization precession becomes more uniform, resulting in the unique intrinsic magnetic damping enhancement in the defect-free Fe$_3$O$_4$ film.

Graphene/liquid crystal based terahertz phase shifters

Due to its high electrical conductivity and excellent transmittance at terahertz frequencies, graphene is a promising candidate as transparent electrodes for terahertz devices. We demonstrate a liquid crystal based terahertz phase shifter with the graphene films as transparent electrodes. The maximum phase shift is 10.8 degree and the saturation voltage is 5 V with a 50 um liquid crystal cell. The transmittance at terahertz frequencies and electrical conductivity depending on the number of graphene layer are also investigated. The proposed phase shifter provides a continuous tunability, fully electrical controllability, and low DC voltage operation.

Spin dynamics of electrons in the first excited subband of a high-mobility low-density 2D electron system

We report on time-resolved Kerr rotation measurements of spin coherence of electrons in the first excited subband of a high-mobility low-density two-dimensional electron system in a GaAs/Al0.35Ga0.65As heterostructure. While the transverse spin lifetime (T2*) of electrons decreases monotonically with increasing magnetic field, it has a non-monotonic dependence on the temperature, with a peak value of 596 ps at 36 K, indicating the effect of inter-subband electron-electron scattering on the electron spin relaxation. The spin lifetime may be long enough for potential device application with electrons in excited subbands.
