Hyperon-Nucleon Spectrometer

Chirality lies at the heart of low-energy QCD, governing the symmetry structure that shapes hadron masses and strong interaction dynamics. Among the most compelling open questions tied to chiral dynamics and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is the longstanding $Λ$ polarization puzzle, in which $Λ$ hyperons produced in unpolarized hadronic collisions exhibit a surprisingly large transverse polarization that remains theoretically unexplained. This whitepaper presents the proposal for the Hyperon-Nucleon Spectrometer (H-NS) at the High-Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF). Leveraging the high energy and high intensity of HIAF's proton and heavy-ion beams, the H-NS experiment will perform systematic studies of hyperon polarization phenomena and their underlying mechanisms in proton-proton ($pp$), proton-nucleus ($pA$), and nucleus-nucleus ($AA$) collisions in the fixed target mode. A wide-range beam energy scan, including proton beams from 3 GeV up to 9.3 GeV (HIAF) and up to 32 GeV (upgraded HIAF), will be conducted to examine the dependence of polarization on collision energy. The spectrometer is designed with specialized detectors capable of high-precision reconstruction of final-state baryon polarizations. Among its many interesting and important measurements, H-NS will simultaneously measure hyperon and proton spin observables to explore the polarization mechanism in hadronic interactions and the spin structure of baryons. Furthermore, the use of $pA$ and $AA$ collisions will enable detailed investigations of cold and hot nuclear matter effects on spin polarization. Its physics program and detector development will significantly benefit the future Electron-ion Collider in China.

Controlling plasmonic orbital angular momentum by combining geometric and dynamic phases

Tunable orbit angular momentum (OAM) of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is theoretically studied with appropriately designed metasurfaces. By controlling both the orientation angle and spatial position of nano aperture array on an ultrathin gold film, the field distributions of the surface waves can be engineered to contain both spin dependent and independent OAM components. Simultaneous control over the geometric phase and optical path difference induced phase (dynamic phase) provides extra degrees of freedom for manipulating OAM of SPPs. We show that arbitrary combination of OAM numbers can be realized for the SPPs excited by incident light of different circular polarizations. The results provides powerful control over the OAM of SPPs, which will have potential applications on optical trapping, imaging, communications and quantum information processing.

BCS-BEC Crossover and Thermodynamics in Asymmetric Nuclear Matter with Pairings in Isospin I=0 and I=1 Channels

The BCS-BEC crossover and phase diagram for asymmetric nuclear superfluid with pairings in isospin I = 0 and I = 1 channels are investigated at mean field level, by using a density dependent nucleon-nucleon potential. Induced by the in-medium nucleon mass and density dependent coupling constants, neutron-proton Cooper pairs could be in BEC state at sufficiently low density, but there is no chance for the BEC formation of neutron-neutron and proton-proton pairs at any density and asymmetry. We calculate the phase diagram in asymmetry-temperature plane for weakly interacting nuclear superfluid, and find that including the I = 1 channel changes significantly the phase structure at low temperature. There appears a new phase with both I = 0 and I = 1 pairings at low temperature and low asymmetry, and the gapless state in any phase with I = 1 pairing is washed out and all excited nucleons are fully gapped.

Neutrino Emission From Inhomogeneous Pion Condensed Quark Matter

It is believed that quark matter can exist in neutron star interior if the baryon density is high enough. When there is a large isospin density, quark matter could be in a pion condensed phase. We compute neutrino emission from direct Urca processes in such a phase, particularly in the inhomogeneous Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) states. The neutrino emissivity and specific heat are obtained, from which the cooling rate is estimated.

Numerical Modeling of a Teeth-shaped Nano-plasmonic Waveguide Filter

In this paper, tooth-shaped and multiple-teeth-shaped plasmonic filters in the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides are demonstrated numerically. By introducing a three-port waveguide splitter, a modified model based on the multiple-beam-interference and the scattering matrix is given. The ransmittance spectrum as a function of teeth width, depth, period and period number are respectively addressed. The result shows the new structure not only performs the filtering function as well as MIM grating-like structures, but also is of submicrometer size for ultra-high integration and relatively easy fabrication.

Tooth-shaped plasmonic waveguide filters with nanometeric sizes

A novel nanometeric plasmonic filter in a tooth-shaped Metal-Insulator-Metal waveguide is proposed and demonstrated numerically. An analytic model based on the scattering matrix method is given. The result reveals that the single tooth-shaped filter has a wavelength filtering characteristic and an ultra-compact size in the length of a few hundred nanometers, compared to grating-like SPPs filters. Both analytic and simulation results show that the wavelength of the trough of the transmission has linear and nonlinear relationships with the tooth depth and the tooth width, respectively. The waveguide filter could be utilized to develop ultra-compact photonic filters for high integration.

Chiral Phase Structure at Finite Temperature and Density in Einstein Universe

The gravitational effect on the chiral phase structure at finite temperature and density is investigated in the framework of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in $D$-dimensional ultrastatic Einstein universe. In mean field approximation, the thermodynamic potential and the gap equation determining the curvature, temperature and density dependence of the chiral condensate are analytically derived. In the sense of chiral symmetry restoration and the order of the phase transition, the scalar curvature of the space-time plays similar role as the temperature.

Neutrino Emission From Direct Urca Processes in Pion Condensed Quark Matter

We study neutrino emission from direct Urca processes in pion condensed quark matter. In compact stars with high baryon density, the emission is dominated by the gapless modes of the pion condensation which leads to an enhanced emissivity. While for massless quarks the enhancement is not remarkable, the emissivity is significantly larger and the cooling of the condensed matter is considerably faster than that in normal quark matter when the mass difference between $u$- and $d$-quarks is sizable.

Asymmetric Fermi Superfluid With Two Types Of Pairings

We investigate the phase diagram in the plane of temperature and chemical potential mismatch for an asymmetric fermion superfluid with double- and single-species pairings. There is no mixing of these two types of pairings at fixed chemical potential, but the introduction of the single species pairing cures the magnetic instability at low temperature.

Asymmetric Fermion Superfluid with Inter- and Intra-Species Pairings

We investigate the phase structure of an asymmetric fermion superfluid with inter- and intra-species pairings. The introduction of the intra-species pairing mechanism in canonical ensemble changes significantly the phase diagram and brings in a new state with coexisting inter- and intra-species pairings. Different from the case with only inter-species pairing, all the fermion excitations are fully gapped in the region with intra-species pairing.

Effect of Chiral Symmetry Restoration on Pentaquark $Θ^+$ Mass and Width at Finite Temperature and Density

We investigate the effect of chiral phase transition on the pentaquark $Θ^+$ mass and width at one-loop level of $NΘ^+K$ coupling at finite temperature and density. The behavior of the mass, especially the width in hadronic medium is dominated by the characteristics of chiral symmetry restoration at high temperature and high density. The mass and width shifts of positive-parity $Θ^+$ are much larger than that of negative-parity one, which may be helpful to determine the parity of $Θ^+$ in high energy nuclear collisions.
