A geometric interpretation of Newton strata

The Newton strata of a reductive $p$-adic group are introduced in \cite{Newton} and play some role in the representation theory of $p$-adic groups. In this paper, we give a geometric interpretation of the Newton strata.

Some results on affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

The study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties originally arose from arithmetic geometry, but many problems on affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are purely Lie-theoretic in nature. This survey deals with recent progress on several important problems on affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The emphasis is on the Lie-theoretic aspect, while some connections and applications to arithmetic geometry will also be mentioned.

Cocenters of $p$-adic groups, I: Newton decomposition

In this paper, we introduce the Newton decomposition on a connected reductive $p$-adic group $G$. Based on it we give a nice decomposition of the cocenter of its Hecke algebra. Here we consider both the ordinary cocenter associated to the usual conjugation action on $G$ and the twisted cocenter arising from the theory of twisted endoscopy. We give Iwahori-Matsumoto type generators on the Newton components of the cocenter. Based on it, we prove a generalization of Howe's conjecture on the restriction of (both ordinary and twisted) invariant distributions. Finally we give an explicit description of the structure of the rigid cocenter.

Cocenters of $p$-adic groups, III: Elliptic and rigid cocenters

In this paper, we show that the elliptic cocenter of the Hecke algebra of a connected reductive group over a nonarchimedean local field is contained in the rigid cocenter. As applications, we prove the trace Paley-Wiener theorem and the abstract Selberg principle for mod-$l$ representations.

Jordan Decompositions of cocenters of reductive $p$-adic groups

Cocenters of Hecke algebras $\mathcal H$ play an important role in studying mod $\ell$ or $\mathbb C$ harmonic analysis on connected $p$-adic reductive groups. On the other hand, the depth $r$ Hecke algebra $\mathcal H_{r^+}$ is well suited to study depth $r$ smooth representations. In this paper, we study depth $r$ rigid cocenters $\overline{\mathcal H}^{\mathrm{rig}}_{r^+}$ of a connected reductive $p$-adic group over rings of characteristic zero or $\ell\neq p$. More precisely, under some mild hypotheses, we establish a Jordan decomposition of the depth $r$ rigid cocenter, hence find an explicit basis of $\overline{\mathcal H}^{\mathrm{rig}}_{r^+}$.

On the $μ$-ordinary locus of a Shimura variety

In this paper, we study the $μ$-ordinary locus of a Shimura variety with parahoric level structure. Under the axioms in \cite{HR}, we show that $μ$-ordinary locus is a union of some maximal Ekedahl-Kottwitz-Oort-Rapoport strata introduced in \cite{HR} and we give criteria on the density of the $μ$-ordinary locus.

Vertexwise criteria for admissibility of alcoves

We give a new description of the set $Adm(μ)$ of admissible alcoves as an intersection of certain "obtuse cones" of alcoves, and we show this description may be given by imposing conditions vertexwise. We use this to prove the vertexwise admissibility conjecture of Pappas-Rapoport-Smithling. The same idea gives simple proofs of two ingredients used in the proof of the Kottwitz-Rapoport conjecture on existence of crystals with additional structure.

Hecke algebras and $p$-adic groups

This survey article, is written as an extended note and supplement of my lectures in the current developments in mathematics conference in 2015. We discuss some recent developments on the conjugacy classes of affine Weyl groups and $p$-adic groups, and some applications to Shimura varieties and to representations of affine Hecke algebras.

Cocenter of $p$-adic groups, II: induction map

In this paper, we study some relation between the cocenter $\bar H(G)$ of the Hecke algebra $H(G)$ of a connected reductive group $G$ over an nonarchimedean local field and the cocenter $\bar H(M)$ of its Levi subgroups $M$. Given any Newton component of $\bar H(G)$, we construct the induction map $\bar i$ from the corresponding Newton component of $\bar H(M)$ to it. We show that this map is surjective. This leads to the Bernstein-Lusztig type presentation of the cocenter $\bar H(G)$, which generalizes the work \cite{HN2} on the affine Hecke algebras. We also show that the map $\bar i$ we constructed is adjoint to the Jacquet functor and in characteristic $0$, the map $\bar i$ is an isomorphism.

On the connected components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

We study the set of connected components of certain unions of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties arising from the study of Shimura varieties. We determine the set of connected components for basic $\s$-conjugacy classes. As an application, we verify the Axioms in \cite{HR} for certain PEL type Shimura varieties. We also show that for any nonbasic $\s$-conjugacy class in a residually split group, the set of connected components is "controlled" by the set of straight elements associated to the $\s$-conjugacy class, together with the obstruction from the corresponding Levi subgroup. Combined with \cite{Zhou}, this allows one to verify in the residually split case, the description of the mod-$p$ isogeny classes on Shimura varieties conjectured by Langland and Rapoport. Along the way, we determine the Picard group of the Witt vector affine Grassmannian of \cite{BS} and \cite{Zhu} which is of independent interest.

On the acceptable elements

In this paper, we study the set $B(G, \{μ\})$ of acceptable elements for any $p$-adic group $G$. We show that $B(G, \{μ\})$ contains a unique maximal element and the maximal element is represented by an element in the admissible subset of the associated Iwahori-Weyl group.

Lifting of elements of Weyl groups

Suppose $G$ is a reductive algebraic group, $T$ is a Cartan subgroup, $N=\text{Norm}(T)$, and $W=N/T$ is the Weyl group. If $w\in W$ has order $d$, it is natural to ask about the orders lifts of $w$ to $N$. It is straightforward to see that the minimal order of a lift of $w$ has order $d$ or $2d$, but it can be a subtle question which holds. We first consider the question of when $W$ itself lifts to a subgroup of $N$ (in which case every element of $W$ lifts to an element of $N$ of the same order). We then consider two natural classes of elements: regular and elliptic. In the latter case all lifts of $w$ are conjugate, and therefore have the same order. We also consider the twisted case.

Cocenters and representations of pro-$p$ Hecke algebras

In this paper, we study the relation between the cocenter and the representations of an affine pro-$p$ Hecke algebra. As a consequence, we obtain a new criterion on the supersingular representation: a (virtual) representation is supersingular if and only if its character vanishes on the non-supersingular part of the cocenter.

Soergel calculus and Schubert calculus

We reduce some key calculations of compositions of morphisms between Soergel bimodules ("Soergel calculus") to calculations in the nil Hecke ring ("Schubert calculus"). This formula has several applications in modular representation theory.

Stratifications in the reduction of Shimura varieties

In the paper four stratifications in the reduction modulo $p$ of a general Shimura variety are studied: the Newton stratification, the Kottwitz-Rapoport stratification, the Ekedahl-Oort stratification and the Ekedahl-Kottwitz-Oort-Rapoport stratification. We formulate a system of axioms and show that these imply non-emptiness statements and closure relation statements concerning these various stratifications. These axioms are satisfied in the Siegel case.

Kottwitz-Rapoport conjecture on unions of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

In this paper, we prove a conjecture of Kottwitz and Rapoport on a union of (generalized) affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties $X(μ, b)_J$ for any tamely ramified group $G$ and its parahoric subgroup $P_J$. We show that $X(μ, b)_J \neq \emptyset$ if and only if the group-theoretic version of Mazur's inequality is satisfied. In the process, we obtain a generalization of Grothendieck's conjecture on the closure relation of $\s$-conjugacy classes of a twisted loop group.

Projected Richardson varieties and affine Schubert varieties

Let $G$ be a complex quasi-simple algebraic group and $G/P$ be a partial flag variety. The projections of Richardson varieties from the full flag variety form a stratification of $G/P$. We show that the closure partial order of projected Richardson varieties agrees with that of a subset of Schubert varieties in the affine flag variety of $G$. Furthermore, we compare the torus-equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory classes of these two stratifications by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. Our work generalizes results of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer for the Grassmannian of type $A$.
