Analytical Markov Chain for Spatiotemporal Flux Evolution of the Inner Filter Effect in Fluorescent Media

Characterizing emission and decay time spectra in multi-component fluorescent media is essential for identifying intrinsic material properties and optimizing detectors. However, wavelength evolution from the secondary inner filter effect (IFE) distorts these observable spectra. While Monte Carlo (MC) ray-tracing can simulate this distortion, accumulating adequate tracking statistics requires long computation times, which hinders parameter optimization within high-dimensional spaces. This paper presents an analytical Markovian transport model based on spatiotemporal decoupling. A Laplace transform converts the multi-nested convolution integrals over continuous domains into a discrete Markov transition matrix, reducing the computational complexity from an exponential scale with respect to wavelength bins $N_{\lambda}$ and cascade order $n$, $\mathcal{O}(N_{\lambda}^n)$, to a linear scale, $\mathcal{O}(N_{\lambda} + n)$. The resulting algebraic solutions evaluate transient decay time spectra as a continuum superposition of Gamma wave packets and predict steady-state wavelength spectrum distortions driven by the IFE within a sub-second timescale. Validations across orthogonal and front-face spectrometer configurations show that the calculated spectra match MC simulations in lineshape. This model can serve as a fast forward engine to accelerate parameter space screening, provide early-stage detector design references, and act as a physics-constrained input for event vertex reconstruction algorithms.

Fine-Grained Object Classification via Self-Supervised Pose Alignment

Semantic patterns of fine-grained objects are determined by subtle appearance difference of local parts, which thus inspires a number of part-based methods. However, due to uncontrollable object poses in images, distinctive details carried by local regions can be spatially distributed or even self-occluded, leading to a large variation on object representation. For discounting pose variations, this paper proposes to learn a novel graph based object representation to reveal a global configuration of local parts for self-supervised pose alignment across classes, which is employed as an auxiliary feature regularization on a deep representation learning network. Moreover, a coarse-to-fine supervision together with the proposed pose-insensitive constraint on shallow-to-deep sub-networks encourages discriminative features in a curriculum learning manner. We evaluate our method on three popular fine-grained object classification benchmarks, consistently achieving the state-of-the-art performance. Switchable Atomically Thin 2D Electrides from First-principles Prediction

Electrides, with excess anionic electrons confined in their empty space, are promising for uses in catalysis, nonlinear optics and spin-electronics. However, the application of electrides is limited by their high chemical reactivity with the environmental agents. In this work, we report the discovery of a group of two-dimensional (2D) moonolayer electrides with the presence of switchable nearly free electron (NFE) states in their electronic structures. Unlike conventional electrides, which are metals with floating electrons forming the partially occupied bands close to the Fermi level, the switchable electrides are chemically much less active semiconductors holding the NFE states that are 0.3-1.5 eV above the Fermi level. According to a high throughput search, we identified 12 2D candidates that possess such low-energy NFE states. Among them, 11 2D materials can likely be exfoliated from the known layered materials. Under external forces, such as a compressive strain, these NFE states stemming from the surface image potential will be pushed downward to cross the Fermi level. Remarkably, the critical semiconductor-metal transition can be achieved by a strain as low as 3% in 2D monolayer Na$_2$Pd$_3$O$_4$. As such, the switchable 2D electrides may provide an ideal platform for exploring novel quantum phenomena and modern electronic device applications.
