Well-posedness and Low Mach Number Limit of the Free Boundary Problem for the Euler--Fourier System

We consider the free boundary problem for the Euler--Fourier system that describes the motion of compressible, inviscid and heat-conducting fluids. The effect of surface tension is neglected and there is no heat flux across the free boundary. We prove the local well-posedness of the problem in Lagrangian coordinates under the Taylor sign condition. The solution is produced as the limit of solutions to a sequence of tangentially-smoothed approximate problems, where the so-called corrector is crucially introduced beforehand in the temperature equation so that the approximate initial data satisfying the corresponding compatibility conditions can be constructed. To overcome the strong coupling effect between the Euler part and the Fourier part in solving the linearized approximate problem, the temperature equation is further regularized by a pseudo-parabolic equation. Moreover, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Mach number of the solutions to the free-boundary Euler--Fourier system with large temperature variations, which allow us to justify the convergence towards the free-boundary inviscid low Mach number limit system by the strong compactness argument.

Vanishing viscosity limits of compressible viscoelastic equations in half space

In this paper we consider the vanishing viscosity limit of solutions to the initial boundary value problem for compressible viscoelastic equations in the half space. When the initial deformation gradient does not degenerate and there is no vacuum initially, we establish the uniform regularity estimates of solutions to the initial-boundary value problem for the three-dimensional compressible viscoelastic equations in the Sobolev spaces. Then we justify the vanishing viscosity limit of solutions of the compressible viscoelastic equations based on the uniform regularity estimates and the compactness arguments. Both the no-slip boundary condition and the Navier-slip type boundary condition on velocity are addressed in this paper. On the one hand, for the corresponding vanishing viscosity limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the no-slip boundary condition, it is impossible to derive such uniform energy estimates of solutions due to the appearance of strong boundary layers. Consequently, our results show that the deformation gradient can prevent the formation of strong boundary layers. On the other hand, these results also provide two different kinds of suitable boundary conditions for the well-posedness of the initial-boundary value problem of the elastodynamic equations via the vanishing viscosity limit method. Finally, it is worth noting that we take advantage of the Lagrangian coordinates to study the vanishing viscosity limit for the fixed boundary problem in this paper.

Vanishing viscosity limits for the free boundary problem of compressible viscoelastic fluids with surface tension

We consider the free boundary problem of compressible isentropic neo-Hookean viscoelastic fluid equations with surface tension. Under the physical kinetic and dynamic conditions proposed on the free boundary, we investigate regularities of classical solutions to viscoelastic fluid equations in Sobolev spaces which are uniform in viscosity and justify the corresponding vanishing viscosity limits. The key ingredient of our proof is that the deformation gradient tensor in Lagrangian coordinates can be represented as a parameter in terms of flow map so that the inherent structure of the elastic term improves the uniform regularity of normal derivatives in the limit of vanishing viscosity. This result indicates that the boundary layer does not appear in the free boundary problem of compressible viscoelastic fluids which is different to the case studied by the second author for the free boundary compressible Navier-Stokes system.

Zero Surface Tension Limit of the Free-Boundary Problem in Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics

We show that the solution of the free-boundary incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with surface tension converges to that of the free-boundary incompressible ideal MHD equations without surface tension given the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition holds true initially. This result is a continuation of the authors' previous works [17,32,16]. Our proof is based on the combination of the techniques developed in our previous works [17,32,16], Alinhac good unknowns, and a crucial anti-symmetric structure on the boundary.

Local Well-posedness of the Free-Boundary Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics with Surface Tension

We prove the local well-posedness of the 3D free-boundary incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations with surface tension, which describe the motion of a perfect conducting fluid in an electromagnetic field. We adapt the ideas developed in the remarkable paper [11] by Coutand and Shkoller to generate an approximate problem with artificial viscosity indexed by $\kappa>0$ whose solution converges to that of the MHD equations as $\kappa\to 0$. However, the local well-posedness of the MHD equations is no easy consequence of Euler equations thanks to the strong coupling between the velocity and magnetic fields. This paper is the continuation of the second and third authors' previous work [38] in which the a priori energy estimate for incompressible free-boundary MHD with surface tension is established. But the existence is not a trivial consequence of the a priori estimate as it cannot be adapted directly to the approximate problem due to the loss of the symmetric structure.

Local Well-posedness of the Free Boundary Incompressible Elastodynamics with Surface Tension

In this paper, we consider a free boundary problem of the incompressible elatodynamics, a coupling system of the Euler equations for the fluid motion with a transport equation for the deformation tensor. Under a natural force balance law on the free boundary with the surface tension, we establish its well-posedness theory on a short time interval. Our method is the vanishing viscosity limit by establishing a uniform a priori estimates with respect to the viscosity. As a by-product, the inviscid limit of the incompressible viscoelasticity (the system coupling with the Navier-Stokes equations) is also justified. We point out that based on a crucial new observation of the inherent structure of the elastic term on the free boundary, the framework here is established solely in standard Sobolev spaces, but not the co-normal ones used in \cite{MasRou}.

On subsonic and subsonic-sonic flows with general conservatives force in exterior domains

In this paper, we study irrotational subsonic and subsonic-sonic flows with general conservative forces in the exterior domains. The conservative forces indicate the new Bernoulli law naturally. For the subsonic case, we introduce a modified cut-off system depending on the conservative forces which needs the varied Bers skill, and construct the solution by the new variational formula. Moreover, comparing with previous results, our result extends the pressure-density relation to the general case. Afterwards we obtain the subsonic-sonic limit solution by taking the extract subsonic solutions as the approximate sequences.

Well-posedness of the free boundary problem in incompressible elastodynamics under the mixed type stability condition

We consider the free boundary problem for the incompressible elastodynamics equations. At the free boundary moving with the velocity of the fluid particles the columns of the deformation gradient are tangent to the boundary and the pressure vanishes outside the flow domain. We prove the local existence of a unique smooth solution of the free boundary problem, under the mixed type stability condition that some regions of the initial free boundary satisfy the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition, while the remaining boundary satisfy the non-collinearity condition. In particular, we solve an open problem proposed by Y. Trakhinin in the paper \cite{Trak_18}.

Well-posedness of axially symmetric incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations with vacuum under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition

We consider a free boundary problem for the axially symmetric incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations that describes the motion of the plasma in vacuum. Both the plasma magnetic field and vacuum magnetic field are tangent along the plasma-vacuum interface. Moreover, the vacuum magnetic field is composed in a non-simply connected domain and hence is non-trivial. Under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition on the free surface, we prove the local well-posedness of the problem in Sobolev spaces. Furthermore, we also prove the local well-posdeness under a more general "stability" assumption for the initial data, which provided that the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition is satisfied at all those points of the initial interface where the non-collinearity condition fails.

Well-posedness of axially symmetric incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations with vacuum under the non-collinearity condition

Under the non-collinearity condition on the free surface, we prove the local well-posedness of the problem in Sobolev spaces.

On the construction of solutions to the free-surface incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations

We consider a free boundary problem for the incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations that describes the motion of the plasma in vacuum. The magnetic field is tangent and the total pressure vanishes along the plasma-vacuum interface. Under the Taylor sign condition of the total pressure on the free surface, we prove the local well-posedness of the problem in Sobolev spaces.

Local Well-posedness of the three dimensional compressible Euler--Poisson equations with physical vacuum

This paper is concerned with the three dimensional compressible Euler--Poisson equations with moving physical vacuum boundary condition. This fluid system is usually used to describe the motion of a self-gravitating inviscid gaseous star. The local existence of classical solutions for initial data in certain weighted Sobolev spaces is established in the case that the adiabatic index satisfies $1 < \gamma < 3$.

Regularity criteria for suitable weak solutions to the four dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamic equations near boundary

In this paper, we consider suitable weak solutions of the four dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamic equations. We give two different kind $\varepsilon$-regularity criteria. One only requires the smallness of scaling $L^{p,q}$ norm of $u$, another requires the smallness of scaling space time $L^2$ norm of $\nabla u$ and boundedness of scaling norm of $H$ or $\nabla H$. And as an application of the second kind criteria, we also prove that up to the boundary, the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the set of singular points is equal to zero.
