Anisotropic Topological Anderson Transitions in Chiral Symmetry Classes

We study quantum phase transitions of three-dimensional disordered systems in the chiral classes (AIII and BDI) with and without weak topological indices. We show that the systems with a nontrivial weak topological index universally exhibit an emergent thermodynamic phase where wave functions are delocalized along one spatial direction but exponentially localized in the other two spatial directions, which we call the quasi-localized phase. Our extensive numerical study clarifies that the critical exponent of the Anderson transition between the metallic and quasi-localized phases, as well as that between the quasi-localized and localized phases, are different from that with no weak topological index, signaling the new universality classes induced by topology. The quasi-localized phase and concomitant topological Anderson transition manifest themselves in the anisotropic transport phenomena of disordered weak topological insulators and nodal-line semimetals, which exhibit the metallic behavior in one direction but the insulating behavior in the other directions.

Level statistics of real eigenvalues in non-Hermitian systems

Symmetries associated with complex conjugation and Hermitian conjugation, such as time-reversal symmetry and pseudo-Hermiticity, have great impact on eigenvalue spectra of non-Hermitian random matrices. Here, we show that time-reversal symmetry and pseudo-Hermiticity lead to universal level statistics of non-Hermitian random matrices on and around the real axis. From the extensive numerical calculations of large random matrices, we obtain the five universal level-spacing and level-spacing-ratio distributions of real eigenvalues, each of which is unique to the symmetry class. Furthermore, we analyse spacings of real eigenvalues in physical models, such as bosonic many-body systems and free fermionic systems with disorder and dissipation. We clarify that the level spacings in ergodic (metallic) phases are described by the universal distributions of non-Hermitian random matrices in the same symmetry classes, while the level spacings in many-body localized and Anderson localized phases show the Poisson statistics. We also find that the number of real eigenvalues shows distinct scalings in the ergodic and localized phases in these symmetry classes. These results serve as effective tools for detecting quantum chaos, many-body localization, and real-complex transitions in non-Hermitian systems with symmetries.

Universality classes of the Anderson transitions driven by quasiperiodic potential in the three-dimensional Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes

Quasiperiodic system is an intermediate state between periodic and disordered systems with unique delocalization-localization transition driven by the quasiperiodic potential (QP). One of the intriguing questions is whether the universality class of the Anderson transition (AT) driven by QP is similar to that of the AT driven by the random potential in the same symmetry class. Here, we study the critical behavior of the ATs driven by QP in the three-dimensional (3D) Anderson model, Peierls phase model, and Ando model, which belong to the Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes. The localization length and two-terminal conductance have been calculated by the transfer matrix method, and we argue that their error estimations in statistics suffer from the correlation of QP. With the correlation under control, the critical exponents $ν$ of the ATs driven by QP are estimated by the finite size scaling analysis of conductance, which are consistent with $ν$'s of the ATs driven by the random potential. Moreover, the critical conductance distribution and the level spacing ratio distribution have been studied. We also find that a convolutional neural network trained by the localized/delocalized wavefunctions in a disordered system predicts the localized/delocalized wavefunctions in quasiperiodic systems. Our numerical results strongly support that the universality classes of the ATs driven by QP and random potential are similar in the 3D Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes.

Unifying the Anderson Transitions in Hermitian and Non-Hermitian Systems

Non-Hermiticity enriches the 10-fold Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry class into the 38-fold symmetry class, where critical behavior of the Anderson transitions (ATs) has been extensively studied recently. Here, we propose a correspondence of the universality classes of the ATs between Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems. We illustrate that the critical exponents of the length scale in non-Hermitian systems coincide with the critical exponents in the corresponding Hermitian systems with additional chiral symmetry. A remarkable consequence of the correspondence is superuniversality, i.e., the ATs in some different symmetry classes of non-Hermitian systems are characterized by the same critical exponent. In addition to the comparisons between the known critical exponents for non-Hermitian systems and their Hermitian counterparts, we obtain the critical exponents in symmetry classes AI, AII, AII$^{\dagger}$, CII$^{\dagger}$, and DIII in two and three dimensions. Estimated critical exponents are consistent with the proposed correspondence. According to the correspondence, some of the exponents also give useful information of the unknown critical exponents in Hermitian systems, paving a way to study the ATs of Hermitian systems by the corresponding non-Hermitian systems.

Transfer matrix study of the Anderson transition in non-Hermitian systems

In this paper, we present in-depth transfer matrix analyses of the Anderson transition in three non-Hermitian (NH) systems, NH Anderson, U(1) and Peierls models, that belong to NH class AI$^{\dagger}$ or NH class A. We first argue a general validity of the transfer matrix analysis, and clarify the symmetry properties of the Lyapunov exponents, scattering ($S$) matrix and two-terminal conductance in these NH models. The unitarity of the $S$ matrix is violated in NH systems, where the two-terminal conductance can take arbitrarily large values. Nonetheless, we show that the transposition symmetry of a Hamiltonian leads to the symmetric nature of the $S$ matrix as well as the reciprocal symmetries of the Lyapunov exponents and conductance in certain ways in these NH models. Finite size scaling data are fitted by polynomial functions, from which we determine the critical exponent $ν$ at different single-particle energies and system parameters of the NH models. We conclude that the critical exponents of the NH class AI$^{\dagger}$ and the NH class A are $ν=1.19 \pm 0.01$ and $ν=1.00 \pm 0.04$, respectively. In the NH models, a distribution of the two-terminal conductance is not Gaussian. Instead, it contains small fractions of huge conductance values, which come from rare-event states with huge transmissions amplified by on-site NH disorders. Nonetheless, a geometric mean of the conductance enables the finite-size scaling analysis. We show that the critical exponents obtained from the conductance analysis are consistent with those from the localization length in these three NH models.

Universality classes of the Anderson Transitions Driven by non-Hermitian Disorder

An interplay between non-Hermiticity and disorder plays an important role in condensed matter physics. Here, we report the universal critical behaviors of the Anderson transitions driven by non-Hermitian disorders for three dimensional (3D) Anderson model and 3D U(1) model, which belong to 3D class ${\rm AI}^{\dagger}$ and 3D class A in the classification of non-Hermitian systems, respectively. Based on level statistics and finite-size scaling analysis, the critical exponent for length scale is estimated as $ν=0.99\pm 0.05$ for class ${\rm AI}^{\dagger}$, and $ν=1.09\pm 0.05 $ for class A, both of which are clearly distinct from the critical exponents for 3D orthogonal and 3D unitary classes, respectively. In addition, spectral rigidity, level spacing distribution, and level spacing ratio distribution are studied. These critical behaviors strongly support that the non-Hermiticity changes the universality classes of the Anderson transitions.

Critical Behaviors of Anderson Transitions in Three Dimensional Orthogonal Classes with Particle-hole Symmetries

From transfer-matrix calculation of localization lengths and their finite-size scaling analyses, we evaluate critical exponents of the Anderson metal-insulator transition in three dimensional (3D) orthogonal class with particle-hole symmetry, class CI, as $ν=1.16\pm 0.02$. We further study disorder-driven quantum phase transitions in the 3D nodal line Dirac semimetal model, which belongs to class BDI, and estimate critical exponent as $ν=0.80\pm 0.02$. From a comparison of the critical exponents, we conclude that a disorder-driven re-entrant insulator-metal transition from the topological insulator phase in the class BDI to the diffusive metal phase belongs to the same universality class as the Anderson transition in the 3D class BDI. We also argue that an infinitesimally small disorder drives the nodal line Dirac semimetal in the clean limit to the diffusive metal.

Unconventional scaling theory in disorder-driven quantum phase transition

We clarify novel forms of scaling functions of conductance, critical conductance distribution and localization length in a disorder-driven quantum phase transition between band insulator and Weyl semimetal phases. Quantum criticality of the phase transition is controlled by a clean-limit fixed point with spatially anisotropic scale invariance. We argue that the anisotropic scale invariance is reflected on unconventional scaling function forms in the quantum phase transition. We verify the proposed scaling function forms in terms of transfer-matrix calculations of conductance and localization length in a tight-binding model.

Quantum Multicriticality in Disordered Weyl Semimetal

In electronic band structure of solid state material, two band touching points with linear dispersion appear in pair in the momentum space. When they annihilate with each other, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from three-dimensional Weyl semimetal (WSM) phase to a band insulator phase such as Chern band insulator (CI) phase. The phase transition is described by a new critical theory with a `magnetic dipole' like object in the momentum space. In this paper, we reveal that the critical theory hosts a novel disorder-driven quantum multicritical point, which is encompassed by three quantum phases, renormalized WSM phase, CI phase, and diffusive metal (DM) phase. Based on the renormalization group argument, we first clarify scaling properties around the band touching points at the quantum multicritical point as well as all phase boundaries among these three phases. Based on numerical calculations of localization length, density of states and critical conductance distribution, we next prove that a localization-delocalization transition between the CI phase with a finite zero-energy density of states (zDOS) and DM phase belongs to an ordinary 3D unitary class. Meanwhile, a localization-delocalization transition between the Chern insulator phase with zero zDOS and a renormalized Weyl semimetal (WSM) phase turns out to be a direct phase transition whose critical exponent $ν=0.80\pm 0.01$. We interpret these numerical results by a renormalization group analysis on the critical theory.
