Magnetic properties of the itinerant A-type antiferromagnet CaCo2P2 studied by 59Co and 31P NMR

$^{59}$Co and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in external magnetic and zero magnetic fields have been performed to investigate the magnetic properties of the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) CaCo$_2$P$_2$. NMR data, especially, the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates 1/$T_1$ exhibiting a clear peak, provide clear evidence for the AFM transition at a Néel temperature of $T_{\rm N}\sim$110~K. The magnetic fluctuations in the paramagnetic state were found to be three-dimensional ferromagnetic, suggesting ferromagnetic interaction between Co spins in the ${\it ab}$ plane characterize the spin correlations in the paramagnetic state. In the AFM state below $T_{\rm N}$, we have observed $^{59}$Co and $^{31}$P NMR signals under zero magnetic field. From $^{59}$Co NMR data, the ordered magnetic moments of Co are found to be in $ab$ plane and are estimated to be 0.35 $μ_{\rm B}$ at 4.2 K. Furthermore, the external field dependence of $^{59}$Co NMR spectrum in the AFM state suggests a very weak magnetic anisotropy of the Co ions and also provides microscopic evidence of canting the Co ordered moments along the external magnetic field directions. The magnetic state of the Co ions in CaCo$_2$P$_2$ is well explained by the local moment picture in the AFM state, although the system is metallic as seen by $1/T_1T$ = constant behavior.

Superconductivity and quantum criticality in heavy fermions CeIrSi$_3$ and CeRhSi$_3$

Superconductivity and magnetism are mutually exclusive in most alloys and elements, so it is striking that superconductivity emerges around a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) in many strongly correlated electron systems (SCES). In the latter case superconductivity is believed to be unconventional and directly influenced by the QCP. However, experimentally unconventional superconductivity has neither been established nor directly been linked to any mechanism of the QCP. Here we report measurements in the heavy-fermion superconductors CeIrSi$_3$ and CeRhSi$_3$. The measurements were performed with a newly developed system, first of its kind, that allows high-resolution studies of the superconducting gap structure under pressure. Superconductivity in CeIrSi$_3$ shows a change from an excitation spectrum with a line-nodal gap to one which is entirely gapful when pressure is close but not yet at the QCP. In contrast, CeRhSi$_3$ does not possess an obvious pressure-tuned QCP and the superconducting phase remains for all accessible pressures with a nodal gap. Combining both results suggests that unconventional behaviours may be connected with the coexisting antiferromagnetic order. This study provides a new viewpoint on the interplay of superconductivity and magnetism in SCES.

Magnetic-field enhanced aniferromagnetism in non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si

The effect of magnetic field on the static and dynamic spin correlations in the non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si was investigated by neutron scattering. The application of a magnetic field B increases the antiferromagnetic (AFM) peak intensity. This increase depends strongly on the field direction: for B${\parallel}$[0 0 1] the intensity increases by a factor of 4.6 at a field of 6.6 T, which corresponds to more than a doubling of the AFM moment, while the moment increases by only 10 % for B${\parallel}$[1 0 0] at 5 T. This is in strong contrast to the inelastic response near the antiferromagnetic ordering vector, where no marked field variations are observed for B${\parallel}$[0 0 1] up to 3.8 T. The results reveal that the AFM state in CePt$_3$Si, which coexists with superconductivity, is distinctly different from other unconventional superconductors.

Effect of magnetic field in heavy-fermion compound YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on poly crystalline sample of heavy-fermion compound YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ were carried out in order to obtain microscopic insights on the ground state and its magnetic field response. At zero field at 300 mK, inelastic response consists of two features: quasielastic scattering and a sharp peak at 0.6 meV. With increasing temperature, a broad peak comes up around 2.1 meV, whereas quasielastic response gets broader and the peak at 0.6 meV becomes unclear. By applying magnetic field, the quasielastic response exhibits significant broadening above 1 T, and the peak at 0.6 meV is obscure under fields. The peaks in inelastic spectra and its temperature variation can be ascribed to the suggested crystal-field model of ${Γ_6}$ - ${Γ_8}$ - ${Γ_7}$ with the overall splitting of less than 3 meV. The observed quasielastic response and its rapid broadening with magnetic field indicates that the heavy-electron state arises from the ground state doublets, and are strongly suppressed by external field in YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$.

Novel Quantum Criticality in CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ near Absolute Zero Observed by Thermal Expansion and Magnetostriction

We report linear thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements for CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ in magnetic fields up to 52.6 mT and at temperatures down to 1 mK. At high temperatures, this compound showed Landau-Fermi-liquid behavior: The linear thermal expansion coefficient and the magnetostriction coefficient were proportional to the temperature and magnetic field, respectively. In contrast, a pronounced non-Fermi-liquid effect was found below 50 mK. The negative contribution of thermal expansion and magnetostriction suggests the existence of an additional quantum critical point.

^{63,65}Cu NMR and NQR evidence for an unusual spin dynamics in PrCu_2 below 100 K

We report the results of a $^{63,65}$Cu NMR/NQR study probing the intermetallic compound PrCu$_2$. The previously claimed onset of magnetic order at 65 K, indicated in a $μ$SR study, is not confirmed. Based on our data we discuss different possible reasons for this apparent discrepancy, including a non negligible influence of the implanted muons on their environment. Competing dipolar and quadrupolar interactions lead to unusual features of the magnetic-ion/conduction-electron system, different from those of common intermetallics exhibiting structural or magnetic instabilities.

Evidence for a Novel State of Superconductivity in Noncentrosymmetric CePt3Si : A 195Pt-NMR Study

We report on novel antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) properties of noncentrosymmetric CePt3Si through measurements of the 195Pt nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1. In the normal state, the temperature (T) dependence of 1/T1 unraveled the existence of low-lying levels in crystal-electric-field multiplets and the formation of a heavy fermion (HF) state. The coexistence of AFM and SC phases, that emerge at TN = 2.2 K and Tc = 0.75 K, respectively, takes place on a microscopic level. CePt3Si is the first HF superconductor that reveals a peak in 1/T1 just below Tc and, additionally, does not follow the T^3 law that used to be reported for most unconventional HF superconductors. We remark that this unexpected SC characteristics may be related with the lack of an inversion center in its crystal structure.

Heat-capacity anomalies at $T_{sc}$ and $T^{*}$ in the ferromagnetic superconductor UGe$_2$

The heat-capacity and magnetization measurements under high pressure have been carried out in a ferromagnetic superconductor UGe$_2$. Both measurements were done using a same pressure cell in order to obtain both data for one pressure. Contrary to the heat capacity at ambient pressure, an anomaly is found in the heat capacity at the characteristic temperature $T^{*}$ where the magnetization shows an anomalous enhancement under high pressure where the superconductivity appears. This suggests that a thermodynamic phase transition takes place at $T^{*}$ at least under high pressure slightly below $P_{c}^{*}$ where $T^{*}$ becomes zero. The heat-capacity anomaly associated with the superconducting transition is also investigated, where a clear peak of $C/T$ is observed in a narrow pressure region ($ΔP \sim 0.1$ GPa) around $P_{c}^{*}$ contrary to the previous results of the resistivity measurement. Present results suggest the importance of the thermodynamic critical point $P_{c}^{*}$ for the appearance of the superconductivity.

Coexistence of Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity near the Quantum Criticality in Heavy Fermion Compound CeRhIn$_5$

We report a study on the interplay between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity (SC) in a heavy-fermion compound CeRhIn$_5$ under pressure $P=1.75$ GPa. The onset of the magnetic order is evidenced from a clear split of $^{115}$In-NQR spectrum due to the spontaneous internal field below the Néel temperature $T_N=2.5$ K. Simultaneously, bulk SC below $T_c=2.0$ K is demonstrated by the observation of the Meissner diamagnetism signal whose size is the same as in the exclusively superconducting phase. These results indicate that the AFM coexists homogeneously with the SC at a microscopic level.

Exotic Heavy Fermion State in the Filled Skutterudite PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ Uncovered by the de Haas-van Alphen Effect

We report the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) experiment on the filled skutterudite PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ exhibiting apparent Kondo-like behaviors in the transport and thermal properties. We have found enormously enhanced cyclotron effective mass $m^{\rm \ast}_{\rm c}=81 m_{\rm 0}$ in the high field phase (HFP), which indicates that PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ is the first Pr-compound in which really heavy mass has been unambiguously confirmed. Also in the low field non-magnetic ordered phase (LOP), we observed the dHvA branch with $m^{\rm \ast}_{\rm c}=10 m_{0}$ that is quite heavy taking into account its small Fermi surface volume (0.15% of the Brillouin zone size). The insensitivity of mass in LOP against the magnetic field suggests that the quadrupolar interaction plays a main role both in the mass renormalization and the LOP formation.

Superconductivity in a pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7

We make the first report that a metallic pyrochlore oxide \Cd2Re2O7, exhibits type II superconductivity at 1.1 K. The pyrochlore oxide is known to be a geometrical frustrated system, which includes the tetrahedral network of magnetic ions. A large number of compounds are classified in the family of pyrochlore oxides, and these compounds exhibit a wide variety of physical properties ranging from insulator through semiconductor and from bad metal to good metal. Until now, however, no superconductivity has been reported for frustrated pyrochlore oxides. The bulk superconductivity of this compound is confirmed by measurements of the resistivity and the a. c. magnetic susceptibility. The \Hc2, which is extrapolated to 0 K, is estimated as about 0.8 T, using the resistivity measurements under aplied field. The plot of \Hc2 vs $T$ indicates that the Cooper pairs are composed of rather heavy quasiparticles. This fact suggests that frustrated heavy electrons become superconducting in this compound.
