Distributed quantum computing with black-box subroutines

In this work, we propose a general protocol for distributed quantum computing that accommodates arbitrary unknown subroutines. It can be applied to scale up quantum computing through multi-chip interconnection, as well as to tasks such as estimating unknown parameters or processes for circuit depth reduction and constructing secure quantum cryptographic protocols. Our protocol builds upon a few techniques we develop, such as the oblivious quantum teleportation and control, which can circumvent quantum no-go theorems on the manipulation of unknown objects. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this protocol can be physically implemented using currently available quantum computing platforms. These results suggest that our framework could provide a foundation for developing more advanced quantum algorithms and protocols in the future.

Phase diagram of the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice: A cluster slave-spin study

The cluster slave-spin method is implemented to research the ground state properties of the honeycomb lattice Hubbard model with doping $δ$ and coupling $U$ being its parameters. At half-filling, a single direct and continuous phase transition between the semi-metal and antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator is found at $U_{\text{AFM}}=2.43t$ that is in the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa universality class, where a relation between the staggered magnetization $M$ and the AFM energy gap $Δ_{\text{AFM}}$ is established as $M \propto Δ_{\text{AFM}}$, compared to $M \propto Δ_{\text{AFM}} ( \ln{Δ_{\text{AFM}}})^2$ in the square lattice case. A first-order semi-metal to the underlying paramagnetic (PM) insulator Mott transition is corroborated at $U_{\text{Mott}}=8.36t$, which is responsible for a broad crossover around $U_{c} = 5.4t$ between the weak- and strong-coupling regimes in the AFM state that increases with $δ$, in contrast to the square lattice case. In the doped system, the compressibility $κ$ near the van Hove singularity at $δ=1/4$ is suppressed substantially by the interaction before the semi-metal to AFM transition occurs, whereas $κ$ near the Dirac points is very close to the noninteracting one, indicating that the Dirac cone structure of the energy dispersion is rather robust. An overall phase diagram in the $U$-$δ$ plane is presented, consisting of four regimes: the AFM insulator at $δ=0$ for $U> U_{\text{AFM}}$, the AFM metal with compressibility $κ>0$ or $κ<0$, and the PM semi-metal, and the AFM metal with $κ<0$ only exists in an extremely small area near the phase boundary between the AFM and PM state.

Phase diagram of the Hubbard model on a square lattice: A cluster slave-spin study

We employ the cluster slave-spin method to investigate systematically the ground state properties of the Hubbard model on a square lattice with doping $δ$ and coupling strength $U$ being its parameters. In addition to a crossover reflected in the behavior of the antiferromagnetic gap $Δ_{\text{AFM}}$, this property can also be observed in the energetics of the cluster slave-spin Hamiltonian -- the antiferromagnetism at small $U$ is due to the potential energy gain while that in the strong coupling limit is driven by the kinetic energy gain, which is consistent with the results from the cluster dynamical mean-field theory calculation and the quantum Monte Carlo simulation. We find the interaction $U_{c}$ for the crossover in the AFM state, separating the weak- and strong- coupling regimes, almost remains unchanged upon doping, and it is smaller than the critical coupling strength $U_{\text{Mott}}$ for the first-order metal-insulator Mott transition in the half-filled paramagnetic state. At half-filling, a relationship between the staggered magnetization $M$ and $Δ_{\text{AFM}}$ is established in the small $U$ limit to nullify the Hartree-Fock theory, and a first-order Mott transition in the paramagnetic state is substantiated, which is characterized by discontinuities and hystereses at $U_{\text{Mott}}=10t$. Finally, an overall phase diagram in the $U$-$δ$ plane is presented, which is composed of four regimes: the antiferromagnetic insulator, the antiferromagnetic metal with the compressibility $κ>0$ or $κ<0$, and the paramagnetic metal, as well as three phase transitions: (i) From the antiferromagnetic metal to the paramagnetic metal, (ii) between the antiferromagnetic metal phases with positive and negative $κ$, and (iii) separating the antiferromagnetic insulating phase from the antiferromagnetic metal phase.

Origin of sawtooth domain walls in ferroelectrics

Domains and domain walls are among the key factors that determine the performance of ferroelectric materials. In recent years, a unique type of domain walls, i.e., the sawtooth-shaped domain walls, has been observed in BiFeO$_{3}$ and PbTiO$_{3}$. Here, we build a minimal model to reveal the origin of these sawtooth-shaped domain walls. Incorporating this model into Monte-Carlo simulations shows that (i) the competition between the long-range Coulomb interaction (due to bound charges) and short-range interaction (due to opposite dipoles) is responsible for the formation of these peculiar domain walls and (ii) their relative strength is critical in determining the periodicity of these sawtooth-shaped domain walls. Necessary conditions to form such domain walls are also discussed.

Resonant Subband Landau Level Coupling in Symmetric Quantum Well

Subband structure and depolarization shifts in an ultra-high mobility GaAs/Al_{0.24}Ga_{0.76}As quantum well are studied using magneto-infrared spectroscopy via resonant subband Landau level coupling. Resonant couplings between the 1st and up to the 4th subbands are identified by well-separated anti-level-crossing split resonance, while the hy-lying subbands were identified by the cyclotron resonance linewidth broadening in the literature. In addition, a forbidden intersubband transition (1st to 3rd) has been observed. With the precise determination of the subband structure, we find that the depolarization shift can be well described by the semiclassical slab plasma model, and the possible origins for the forbidden transition are discussed.

Interaction-induced shift of the cyclotron resonance of graphene using infrared spectroscopy

We report a study of the cyclotron resonance (CR) transitions to and from the unusual $n=0$ Landau level (LL) in monolayer graphene. Unexpectedly, we find the CR transition energy exhibits large (up to 10%) and non-monotonic shifts as a function of the LL filling factor, with the energy being largest at half-filling of the $n=0$ level. The magnitude of these shifts, and their magnetic field dependence, suggests that an interaction-enhanced energy gap opens in the $n=0$ level at high magnetic fields. Such interaction effects normally have limited impact on the CR due to Kohn's theorem [W. Kohn, Phys. Rev. {\bf 123}, 1242 (1961)], which does not apply in graphene as a consequence of the underlying linear band structure.

Cyclotron resonance in bilayer graphene

We present the first measurements of cyclotron resonance of electrons and holes in bilayer graphene. In magnetic fields up to B = 18 T we observe four distinct intraband transitions in both the conduction and valence bands. The transition energies are roughly linear in B between the lowest Landau levels, whereas they follow \sqrt{B} for the higher transitions. This highly unusual behavior represents a change from a parabolic to a linear energy dispersion. The density of states derived from our data generally agrees with the existing lowest order tight binding calculation for bilayer graphene. However in comparing data to theory, a single set of fitting parameters fails to describe the experimental results.

Magneto-optic far-infrared study of Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$: triplet excitations in chains

Using far-infrared spectroscopy we have studied the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the spin gap modes in the chains of Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. Two triplet modes T$_1$ and T$_2$ were found in the center of the Brillouin zone at $Δ_1=9.65$ meV and $Δ_2=10.86$ meV in zero magnetic field. The T$_1$ mode was excited when the electric field vector ${\bf E}$ of the light was polarized along the b axis (perpendicular to the planes of chains and ladders) and T$_2$ was excited for ${\bf E}\parallel {\bf a}$ (perpendicular to the chains and along the rungs). Up to the maximum magnetic field of 18 T, applied along the chains, the electron $g$ factors of these two modes were similar, $g_{1c}=2.049$ and $g_{2c}=2.044$. Full linewidth at half maximum for both modes was 1 cm$^{-1}$ (0.12 meV) at 4K and increased with $T$. The temperature dependence of mode energies and line intensities was in agreement with the inelastic neutron scattering results from two groups [Matsuda {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 59}, 1060 (1999) and Regnault {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 59}, 1055 (1999)]. The T$_1$ mode has not been observed by inelastic neutron scattering in the points of the $k$-space equivalent to the center of the Brillouin zone. Our study indicates that the zone structure model of magnetic excitations of Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ must be modified to include a triplet mode at 9.65 meV in the center of the magnetic Brillouin zone.

Infrared spectroscopy of Landau levels in graphene

We report infrared studies of the Landau level (LL) transitions in single layer graphene. Our specimens are density tunable and show \textit{in situ} half-integer quantum Hall plateaus. Infrared transmission is measured in magnetic fields up to B=18 T at selected LL fillings. Resonances between hole LLs and electron LLs, as well as resonances between hole and electron LLs are resolved. Their transition energies are proportional to $\sqrt{B}$ and the deduced band velocity is $\tilde{c}\approx1.1\times10^6$ m/s. The lack of precise scaling between different LL transitions indicates considerable contributions of many-particle effects to the infrared transition energies.

Disorder mediated splitting of the cyclotron resonance in two-dimensional electron systems

We perform a direct study of the magnitude of the anomalous splitting in the cyclotron resonance (CR) of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) as a function of sample disorder. In a series of AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells, identical except for a range of carbon doping in the well, we find the CR splitting to vanish at high sample mobilities but to increase dramatically with increasing impurity density and electron scattering rates. This observation lends strong support to the conjecture that the non-zero wavevector, roton-like minimum in the dispersion of 2D magnetoplasmons comes into resonance with the CR, with the two modes being coupled via disorder.

Low energy excitations and dynamic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in $α'$-NaV$_2$O$_5$ studied by far infrared spectroscopy

We have studied far infrared transmission spectra of alpha'-NaV2O5 between 3 and 200cm-1 in polarizations of incident light parallel to a, b, and c crystallographic axes in magnetic fields up to 33T. The triplet origin of an excitation at 65.4cm-1 is revealed by splitting in the magnetic field. The magnitude of the spin gap at low temperatures is found to be magnetic field independent at least up to 33T. All other infrared-active transitions appearing below Tc are ascribed to zone-folded phonons. Two different dynamic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) mechanisms have been discovered that contribute to the oscillator strength of the otherwise forbidden singlet to triplet transition. 1. The strongest singlet to triplet transition is an electric dipole transition where the polarization of the incident light's electric field is parallel to the ladder rungs, and is allowed by the dynamic DM interaction created by a high frequency optical a-axis phonon. 2. In the incident light polarization perpendicular to the ladder planes an enhancement of the singlet to triplet transition is observed when the applied magnetic field shifts the singlet to triplet resonance frequency to match the 68cm-1 c-axis phonon energy. The origin of this mechanism is the dynamic DM interaction created by the 68cm-1 c-axis optical phonon. The strength of the dynamic DM is calculated for both mechanisms using the presented theory.

Field-Induced Ising Criticality and Incommensurability in Anisotropic Spin-1 Chains

Quantum phase transitions induced by an external magnetic field in the Haldane-gapped spin-1 chains are studied in a fermionic field-theoretic description of the model. In the case with broken axial symmetry, two transitions occurs consecutively as increasing the field: $h_c=(m_1 m_2)^{1/2}$ (with $m_1$ and $m_2$ the transverse masses) is the critical Ising point and $\tilde{h}_c^* (> h_c)$ is the commensurate-incommensurate transition point. Although the latter is thermodynamically indiscernible, its property is revealed in the spin correlation functions (both uniform and staggered) which are calculated upon expressing the correlations of coupled Ising pair fields in terms of block-Toeplitz determinants.

Phase diagrams of the generalized spin-1/2 ladder under staggered field and dimerization: A renormalization group study

In the weak-coupling regime of the continuous theories, two sets of one-loop renormalization group equations are derived and solved to disclose the phase diagrams of the antiferromagnetic generalized two-leg spin-1/2 ladder under the effect of (I) a staggered external magnetic field and (II) an explicit dimerization. In model (I), the splitting of the SU(2)$_2$ critical line into U(1) and Z$_2$ critical surfaces is observed; while in model (II), two critical surfaces arising from their underlying critical lines with SU(2)$_2$ and Z$_2$ characteristics merge into an SU(2)$_1$ critical surface on the line where the model attains its highest symmetry.

Quantum criticalities in a two-leg antiferromagnetic S=1/2 ladder induced by a staggered magnetic field

We study a two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder in the presence of a staggered magnetic field. We consider two parameter regimes: strong (weak) coupling along the legs and weak (strong) coupling along the rungs. In both cases, the staggered field drives the Haldane spin-liquid phase of the ladder towards a Gaussian quantum criticality. In a generalized spin ladder with a non-Haldane, spontaneously dimerized phase, the staggered magnetic field induces an Ising quantum critical regime. In the vicinity of the critical lines, we derive low-energy effective field theories and use these descriptions to determine the dynamical response functions, the staggered spin susceptibility and the string order parameter.

Ising-model description of the SU(2)_1 quantum critical point in a dimerized two-leg spin-1/2 ladder

A nonperturbative analytical description of the SU(2)_1 quantum critical point in an explicitly dimerized two-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder is presented. It is shown that this criticality essentially coincides with that emerging in a weakly dimerized spin-1 chain with a small Haldane gap. The approach is based on the mapping onto an SO(3)-symmetric model of three strongly coupled quantum Ising chains. This mapping is used to establish the correspondence between all physical fields of the spin ladder and those characterizing the SU(2)_1 criticality at the infrared fixed point.
