Field-induced magnetic structures in the chiral polar antiferromagnet Ni$_2$InSbO$_6$

We have performed $^{115}$In-NMR spectroscopy for Ni$_{2}$InSbO$_6$ with corundum-related crystal structure to reveal magnetic structures that develop in high magnetic fields. At low fields Ni$_{2}$InSbO$_6$ shows a helical magnetic order with a long wavelength because of its chiral and polar crystal structure. The field-induced magnetic state was not investigated by microscopic experiment because an extremely high magnetic field is required to modify the antiferromagnetically coupled helical structure. From the analysis of our $^{115}$In-NMR spectra obtained at high magnetic fields, we confirm that the canted antiferromagnetic structure appears in fields applied in the $[110]$ direction and the propagation vector of magnetic helix is rotated toward the field direction for fields in the $[001]$ direction. We discuss the effect of magnetic field that modifies the magnetic structure of an antiferromagnetic chiral magnet.

Lattice and magnetic dynamics in polar chiral incommensurate antiferromagnet Ni$_2$InSbO$_6$

Complex systems with coexisting polarity, chirality and incommensurate magnetism are of great interest because they open new degrees of freedom in interaction between different subsystems and therefore they host a plethora of intriguing physical properties. Here we report on optical properties and lattice and spin dynamics of Ni$_2$InSbO$_6$ single crystals studied with the use of polarized optical microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range 10-300 K. Ni$_2$InSbO$_6$ crystallizes in a polar structure described by the noncentrosymmetric space group R3 and two types of structural domains were visualized due to natural optical activity of opposite chirality. Raman tensor elements of most A and E phonons along with their symmetry were determined. The manifestation of LO-TO splitting was observed for the A modes. By tracking the temperature dependencies of phonon frequencies the well pronounced spin-phonon interaction was observed for several modes below and above the Néel transition temperature TN = 76 K. In antiferromagnetic phase a wide excitation centred at 247 cm-1 was detected and assigned to the two-magnon mode and this value was used for estimating exchange parameters through linear spin-wave theory calculations.

Spin Versus Charge Density Wave Order in Graphene-like Systems

A variational technique is used to study sublattice symmetry breaking by strong on-site and nearest neighbor interactions in graphene. When interactions are strong enough to break sublattice symmetry, and with relative strengths characteristic of graphene, a charge density wave Mott insulator is favored over the spin density wave condensates. In the spin density wave condensate we find that introduction of a staggered on-site energy (quasiparticle mass) leads to a splitting of the fermi velocities and mass gaps of the quasiparticle spin states.

Uniform Mixing of High-Tc Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism on a Single CuO2 Plane in Hg-based Five-layered Cuprate

We report a site selective Cu-NMR study on under-doped Hg-based five-layered high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate HgBa2Ca4Cu5Oy with a Tc=72 K. Antiferromagnetism (AF) has been found to take place at TN=290 K, exhibiting a large antiferromagnetic moment of 0.67-0.69uB at three inner planes (IP's). This value is comparable to the values reported for non-doped cuprates, suggesting that the IP may be in a nearly non-doped regime. Most surprisingly, the AF order is also detected with M(OP)=0.1uB even at two outer planes (OP's) that are responsible for the onset of superconductivity (SC). The high-Tc SC at Tc = 72 K can uniformly coexist on a microscopic level with the AF at OP's. This is the first microscopic evidence for the uniform mixed phase of AF and SC on a single CuO2 plane in a simple environment without any vortex lattice and/or stripe order.

Coexistence of Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism in Multilayered High-$T_c$ Superconductor HgBa$_2$Ca$_4$Cu$_5$O$_y$: A Cu-NMR Study

We report a coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in five-layered compound HgBa$_2$Ca$_4$Cu$_5$O$_y$ (Hg-1245) with $T_c=108$ K, which is composed of two types of CuO$_2$ planes in a unit cell; three inner planes (IP's) and two outer planes (OP's). The Cu-NMR study has revealed that the optimallydoped OP undergoes a superconducting (SC) transition at $T_c=108$ K, whereas the three underdoped IP's do an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition below $T_N\sim$ 60 K with the Cu moments of $\sim (0.3-0.4)μ_B$. Thus bulk superconductivity with a high value of $T_c=108$ K and a static AF ordering at $T_N=60$ K are realized in the alternating AF and SC layers. The AF-spin polarization at the IP is found to induce the Cu moments of $\sim0.02μ_B$ at the SC OP, which is the AF proximity effect into the SC OP.
