Molecular and Atomic Gas Associated with the Gamma Ray Supernova Remnant RCW 103

We present a study of the interstellar molecular and atomic gas associated with the gamma-ray supernova remnant (SNR) RCW 103 using the Mopra $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0), Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array $^{13}$CO($J$ = 1-0), and the Australia Telescope Compact Array & Parkes HI data. We find that CO clouds in the velocity range from $-58.7$ to $-43.5$ km s$^{-1}$ show a clear spatial correspondence with the X-ray shell of RCW 103, particularly extending from the northwestern to the southeastern regions. The position-velocity diagram of the CO emission reveals an expanding gas motion with an expansion velocity of $\Delta V \sim$$7.5$ km s$^{-1}$, which may have been produced by shock waves and/or stellar winds from the progenitor system. We estimate the total cosmic-ray proton energy to be $\sim$$3.0^{+1.1}_{-0.6} \times 10^{47}$ erg, adopting a total interstellar proton density of $\sim$$810$ cm$^{-3}$. This value is more than an order of magnitude lower than those inferred for other gamma-ray emitting SNRs of comparable age. Given that a substantial amount of dense gas remains within the interior of RCW 103, where thermal X-ray emission is dominant, our results possibly suggest that a significant fraction of the shock energy may have been converted into thermal energy via gas heating, thereby reducing the efficiency of cosmic-ray acceleration.

Discovery of Molecular and Atomic Gas associated with HESS J1646-458 (Westerlund 1): Spatial TeV Gamma-Ray and Interstellar Proton Correspondence

We report CO and HI studies of molecular and atomic gas toward the TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1646$-$458, widely considered to be associated with the young massive cluster Westerlund 1 (Wd1). We found that molecular clouds at $V_\mathrm{LSR} \sim$$-32$ km s$^{-1}$ coincide with arc-like structures seen at 8 $\mu$m, likely illuminated by strong FUV radiation from Wd1. $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2) emission at the same velocity reveals a cavity-like structure with an expansion velocity of $\sim$$5$ km s$^{-1}$ toward the central region of Wd1, suggesting a recently formed wind-blown bubble driven by the cluster. We also identify a complementary spatial distribution between the $V_\mathrm{LSR} \sim$$-55$ and $\sim$$-32$ km s$^{-1}$ clouds, connected by an intermediate-velocity component at $V_\mathrm{LSR} \sim$$-44$ km s$^{-1}$. These characteristics are consistent with signatures of triggered star formation through a cloud-cloud collision and imply that both clouds are physically associated with Wd1. On larger scales, the total interstellar proton column density at $V_\mathrm{LSR}$ $\sim$$-36$-$-23$ km s$^{-1}$ shows a moderate spatial correspondence with the TeV gamma-ray shell. Together with this correlation, a substantial gas mass of $\sim$$1.6 \times 10^6$ $M_\odot$, and the absence of bright synchrotron X-rays, the TeV gamma-ray emission surrounding Wd1 is consistent with the hadronic origin. The present finding allows us to calculate the total energy of accelerated cosmic-ray protons to be $\sim$$6 \times 10^{49}$ erg.

Prospects for Pentaquark Baryon Search with the Upgraded LEPS2 Facility

We present prospects for the $\Theta^+$ pentaquark baryon search using the newly constructed LEPS2 facility at SPring-8. The LEPS2 detector system features significant improvements in acceptance for multi-particle final states compared to previous experiments. Our search employs two complementary strategies: direct production in the $\gamma n \to K^-\Theta^+$ reaction using a liquid deuterium target with a photon beam up to 2.4 GeV, and $\bar{K}^{*0}$-associated $\Theta^+$ production using a liquid hydrogen target with a photon beam up to 2.9 GeV. The extended acceptance covers both forward and large angle regions, effectively spanning the kinematic regions explored by previous LEPS and CLAS experiments. The large acceptance and improved resolution of LEPS2, combined with these complementary approaches, provide unprecedented sensitivity for establishing the existence of the $\Theta^+$ or placing definitive upper limits on its production.

SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline: A facility to produce a multi-GeV photon beam via laser Compton scattering

We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. The new beamline is under operation for hadron photoproduction experiments.

Identification of Spin-Triplet Superconductivity through a Helical-Chiral Phase Transition in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ Thin-Films

Despite much effort for over the two decades, the paring symmetry of a Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ superconductor has been still unclear. In this Rapid Communication, motivated by the recent rapid progress in fabrication techniques for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ thin-films, we propose a promising strategy for identifying the spin-triplet superconductivity in the thin-film geometry by employing an antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling potential and a Zeeman potential due to an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that a spin-triplet superconducting thin-film undergoes a phase transition from a helical state to a chiral state by increasing the applied magnetic field. This phase transition is accompanied by a drastic change in the property of surface Andreev bound states. As a consequence, the helical-chiral phase transition, which is unique to the spin-triplet superconductors, can be detected through a sudden change in a tunneling conductance spectrum of a normal-metal/superconductor junction. Importantly, our proposal is constructed by combining fundamental and rigid concepts regarding physics of spin-triplet superconductivity.

Collective excitations in Bose-Fermi mixtures

We investigate collective excitations of density fluctuations and a dynamic density structure factor in a mixture of Bose and Fermi gases in a normal phase. With decreasing temperature, we find that the frequency of the collective excitation deviates from that of the hydrodynamic sound mode. Even at temperature much lower than the Fermi temperature, the collective mode frequency does not reach the collisionless limit analogous to zero sound in a Fermi gas, because of collisions between bosons and fermions.

Local impedance on a rough surface of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor

We develop a self-consistent approach for calculating the local impedance at a rough surface of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor. Using the quasiclassical Eilenberger-Larkin-Ovchinnikov formalism, we numerically find the pair potential, pairing functions, and the surface density of states taking into account diffusive electronic scattering at the surface. The obtained solutions are then employed for studying the local complex conductivity and surface impedance in the broad range of microwave frequencies (ranging from subgap to above-gap values). We identify anomalous features of the surface impedance caused by generation of odd-frequency superconductivity at the surface. The results are compared with experimental data for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and provide a microscopic explanation of the phenomenological two-fluid model suggested earlier to explain anomalous features of the microwave response in this material.

Degeneracy of Majorana bound states and fractional Josephson effect in a dirty SNS junction

We theoretically study the stability of more than one Majorana Fermion appearing in a $p$-wave superconductor/dirty normal metal/$p$-wave superconductor junction in two-dimension by using chiral symmetry of Hamiltonian. At the phase difference across the junction $φ$ being $π$, we will show that all of the Majorana bound states in the normal metal belong to the same chirality. Due to this pure chiral feature, the Majorana bound states retain their high degree of degeneracy at the zero energy even in the presence of random potential. As a consequence, the resonant transmission of a Cooper pair via the degenerate MBSs carries the Josephson current at $φ=π-0^+$, which explains the fractional current-phase relationship discussed in a number of previous papers.

Interference effect between $ϕ$ and $Λ(1520)$ production channels in the $γp \rightarrow K^+K^-p$ reaction near threshold

The $ϕ$-$Λ(1520)$ interference effect in the $γp\to K^+K^-p$ reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between $ϕ$ and $Λ(1520)$ production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when $K^+K^-$ pairs are observed at forward angles, but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the $\sqrt{s}=2.1$ GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for $ϕ$ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

Observability of surface Andreev bound states in a topological insulator in proximity to an s-wave superconductor

To guide experimental work on the search for Majorana zero-energy modes, we calculate the superconducting pairing symmetry of a three-dimensional topological insulator in combination with an s-wave superconductor. In analogy to the case of nanowires with strong spin-orbit coupling we show how the pairing symmetry changes across different topological regimes. We demonstrate that a dominant p-wave pairing relation is not sufficient to realize a Majorana zero-energy mode useful for quantum computation. Our main result of this paper is the relation between odd-frequency pairing and Majorana zero energy modes by using Green functions techniques in three-dimensional topological insulators in the so-called Majorana regime. We discuss thereafter how the pairing relations in the different regimes can be observed in the shape of the tunneling conductance of an s-wave proximized three-dimensional topological insulator. We will discuss the necessity to incorporate a ferromagnetic insulator to localize the zero-energy bound state to the interface as a Majorana mode.

Odd-frequency superconducting states with different types of Meissner response: Problem of coexistence

We consider physical properties of a superconductor with a recently proposed type of odd-frequency pairing that exhibits diamagnetic Meissner response ("odd-dia state"). Such a state was suggested in order to address stability issues arising in an odd-frequency superconducting state with paramagnetic Meissner response ("odd-para state"). Assuming the existence of an odd-dia state (due to a proper retarded interaction), we study its coexistence with an odd-para state. The latter is known to be generated as an induced superconducting component in, e.g., singlet superconductor/ferromagnet proximity structures or triplet superconductor/normal metal systems. Calculating the superfluid density of the mixed odd-para/odd-dia state and the Josephson current between the odd-para and odd-dia states, we find that the expressions for the currents in both cases have non-vanishing imaginary contributions and are therefore unphysical. We show that a realization of the odd-dia state implies the absence of a Hamiltonian description of the system, and suggest that there exists no physically realizable perturbation that could give rise to the spontaneous symmetry breaking necessary for an actual realization of the odd-dia superconducting state.

Search for $K^-pp$ bound state via $γd \rightarrow K^+ π^-X$ reaction at $E_γ=1.5-2.4$ GeV

A search for $K^-pp$ bound state (the lightest kaonic nucleus) has been performed using the $γd \rightarrow K^+ π^- \rm{X}$ reaction at E$_γ$=1.5-2.4 GeV at LEPS/SPring-8. The differential cross section of $K^+ π^-$ photo-production off deuterium has been measured for the first time in this energy region, and a bump structure was searched for in the inclusive missing mass spectrum. A statistically significant bump structure was not observed in the region from 2.22 to 2.36 GeV/$c^2$, and the upper limits of the differential cross section for the $K^-pp$ bound state production were determined to be 0.1$-$0.7 $μ$ b (95$%$ confidence level) for a set of assumed binding energy and width values.

Measurement of Spin-Density Matrix Elements for $ϕ$-Meson Photoproduction from Protons and Deuterons Near Threshold

The LEPS/SPring-8 experiment made a comprehensive measurement of the spin-density matrix elements for $γp \to ϕp$, $γd \to ϕp n$ and $γd \to ϕd$ at forward production angles. A linearly polarized photon beam at $E_γ$=1.6-2.4 GeV was used for the production of $ϕ$ mesons. The natural-parity Pomeron exchange processes remains dominant nearthreshold. The unnatural-parity processes of pseudoscalar exchange is visible in the production from nucleons but is greatly reduced in the coherent production from deuterons. There is no strong $E_γ$-dependence, but some dependence on momentum-transfer. A small but finite value of the spin-density matrix elements reflecting helicity-nonconserving amplitudes in the $t$-channel is observed.

Measurement of the incoherent $γd \to ϕp n$ photoproduction near threshold

We report measurements of differential cross sections and decay asymmetries of incoherent $ϕ$-meson photoproduction from the deuteron at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at \Eg=1.5-2.4 GeV. The nuclear transparency ratio for the deuteron shows a large suppression, and is consistent with the A-dependence of the ratio observed in a previous measurement with nuclear targets. The reduction for the deuteron cannot be adequately explained in term of isospin asymmetry. The present results suggest the need of refining our understanding of the $ϕ$-N interaction within a nucleus.

A Cooper pair light emitting diode

We demonstrate Cooper-pair's drastic enhancement effect on band-to-band radiative recombination in a semiconductor. Electron Cooper pairs injected from a superconducting electrode into an active layer by the proximity effect recombine with holes injected from a p-type electrode and dramatically accelerate the photon generation rates of a light emitting diode in the optical-fiber communication band. Cooper pairs are the condensation of electrons at a spin-singlet quantum state and this condensation leads to the observed enhancement of the electric-dipole transitions. Our results indicate the possibility to open up new interdisciplinary fields between superconductivity and optoelectronics.

Backward-angle photoproduction of eta meson from protons at E_gamma = 1.6 - 2.4 GeV

Differential cross sections for eta photoproduction off protons have been measured at E_gamma = 1.6 - 2.4 GeV in the backward direction. A bump structure has been observed above 2.0 GeV in the total energy. No such bump is observed in cross sections for eta', omega and pi0 photoproductions. It is inferred that this unique structure in eta photoproduction is due to a baryon resonance with a large portion of ss-bar strongly coupled to the etaN channel.

Near-threshold photoproduction of $Λ(1520)$ from protons and deuterons

Photoproduction of $Λ$(1520) with liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets was examined at photon energies below 2.4 GeV in the SPring-8 LEPS experiment. For the first time, the differential cross sections were measured at low energies and with a deuterium target. A large asymmetry of the production cross sections from protons and neutrons was observed at backward K$^{+/0}$ angles. This suggests the importance of the contact term, which coexists with t-channel K exchange under gauge invariance. This interpretation was compatible with the differential cross sections, decay asymmetry, and photon beam asymmetry measured in the production from protons at forward K$^+$ angles.

Parity Violation in a Single Domain of Spin-Triplet Sr2RuO4 Superconductors

We observed an unconventional parity-violating vortex in single domain Sr2RuO4 single crystals using a transport measurement. The current-voltage characteristics of submicron Sr2RuO4 shows that the induced voltage has anomalous components which are even function of the bias current. The results may suggest that the vortex itself has a helical internal structure characterized by a Hopf invariant (a topological invariant). We also discuss that the hydrodynamics of such a helical vortex causes the parity violation to retain the topological invariant.
