Josephson current in unconventional superconductors through an Anderson impurity

Josephson current for a system consisting of an Anderson impurity weakly coupled to two unconventional superconductors is studied and shown to be driven by a surface zero energy (mid-gap) bound-state. The repulsive Coulomb interaction in the dot can turn a $π$ junction into a 0-junction. This effect is more pronounced in p-wave superconductors while in high-temperature superconductors with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry it can exit for rather large artificial centers at which tunneling occurs within a finite region.

Cotunneling through quantum dot with even number of electrons

We study an influence of a finite magnetic field on a small spin-degenerate quantum dot with even number of electrons, attached to metallic leads. It is shown that, under certain conditions, the low energy physics of the system can be described by the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Kondo model.

Conductance distribution between Hall plateaus

Mesoscopic fluctuations of two-port conductance and four-port resistance between Hall plateaus are studied within a realistic model for a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field and a smooth disordered potential. The two-port conductance distribution $P(g)$ is concave between $g=0$ and $g=1$ and is nearly flat between $g=0.2$ and $g=0.8$. These characteristics are consistent with recent observations. The distribution is found to be sharply peaked near the end-points $g=0$ and $g=1$. The distribution functions for the three independent resistances in a four-port Hall bar geometry are, on the other hand, characterized by a central peak and a relatively large width.

Quantum Hall plateau transitions in disordered superconductors

We study a delocalization transition for non-interacting quasiparticles moving in two dimensions, which belongs to a new symmetry class. This symmetry class can be realised in a dirty, gapless superconductor in which time reversal symmetry for orbital motion is broken, but spin rotation symmetry is intact. We find a direct transition between two insulating phases with quantized Hall conductances of zero and two for the conserved quasiparticles. The energy of quasiparticles acts as a relevant, symmetry-breaking field at the critical point, which splits the direct transition into two conventional plateau transitions.

Nonlinear Response of a Kondo system: Direct and Alternating Tunneling Currents

Non - equilibrium tunneling current of an Anderson impurity system subject to both constant and alternating electric fields is studied. A time - dependent Schrieffer - Wolff transformation maps the time - dependent Anderson Hamiltonian onto a Kondo one. Perturbation expansion in powers of the Kondo coupling strength is carried out up to third order, yielding a remarkably simple analytical expression for the tunneling current. It is found that the zero - bias anomaly is suppressed by an ac - field. Both dc and the first harmonic are equally enhanced by the Kondo effect, while the higher harmonics are relatively small. These results are shown to be valid also below the Kondo temperature.

Charge and current oscillations in Fractional quantum Hall systems with edges

Stationary solutions of the Chern-Simons effective field theory for the fractional quantum Hall systems with edges are presented for Hall bar, disk and annulus. In the infinitely long Hall bar geometry (non compact case), the charge density is shown to be monotonic inside the sample. In sharp contrast, spatial oscillatory modes of charge density are found for the two circular geometries, which indicate that in systems with compact geometry, charge and current exist also far from the edges.

Localization in Fock space: A finite size scaling hypothesis for many particle excitation statistics

The concept of localization in Fock space is extended to the study of the many particle excitation statistics of interacting electrons in a two dimensional quantum dot. In addition, a finite size scaling hypothesis for Fock space localization, in which the excitation energy replaces the system size, is developed and tested by analyzing the spectral properties of the quantum dot. This scaling hypothesis, modeled after the usual Anderson transition scaling, fits the numerical data obtained for the interacting states in the dot. It therefore attests to the relevance of the Fock space localization scenario to the description of many particle excitation properties.

Landau level mixing and spin degeneracy in the quantum Hall effect

We study dynamics of electrons in a magnetic field using a network model with two channels per link with random mixing in a random intrachannel potential; the channels represent either two Landau levels or two spin states. We consider channel mixing as function of the energy separation of the two extended states and show that its effect changes from repulsion to attraction as the energy separation increases. For two Landau levels this leads to level floating at low magnetic fields while for Zeeman split spin states we predict level attraction at high magnetic fields, accounting for ESR data. We also study random mixing of two degenerate channels, while the intrachannel potential is periodic (non-random). We find a single extended state with a localization exponent $ν\approx 1.1$ for real scattering at nodes; the general case has also a single extended state, though the localized nature of nearby states sets in at unusually large scales.

Dynamical critical behavior in the integer quantum Hall effect

We investigate dynamical scaling properties in the integer quantum Hall effect for non-interacting electrons at zero temperature, by means of the frequency-induced peak broadening of the dissipative longitudinal conductivity $σ_{xx}(ω)$. This quantity is calculated numerically in the lowest Landau level for various values of the Fermi energy $E$, of the frequency $ω$, and of the system size $L$. Data for the width $W(ω,L)$ of the peak are analyzed by means of the dynamical finite-size scaling law $W(ω,L)\approx L^{-1/ν}f\bigl(ωL^z\bigr)$, where $ν$ is the static critical exponent of the localization length, and $z$ is the dynamical exponent. A fit of the data, assuming $ν=2.33$ is known, yields $z=1.19\pm 0.13$. This result indicates that the dynamical exponent in the integer quantum Hall effect may be different from the pertinent space dimension ($d=2$), even in the absence of interactions between electrons.

Non Linear Current Response of a Many-Level Tunneling System: Higher Harmonics Generation

The fully nonlinear response of a many-level tunneling system to a strong alternating field of high frequency $ω$ is studied in terms of the Schwinger-Keldysh nonequilibrium Green functions. The nonlinear time dependent tunneling current $I(t)$ is calculated exactly and its resonance structure is elucidated. In particular, it is shown that under certain reasonable conditions on the physical parameters, the Fourier component $I_{n}$ is sharply peaked at $n=\frac {ΔE} {\hbar ω}$, where $ΔE$ is the spacing between two levels. This frequency multiplication results from the highly nonlinear process of $n$ photon absorption (or emission) by the tunneling system. It is also conjectured that this effect (which so far is studied mainly in the context of nonlinear optics) might be experimentally feasible.
