Partial wave analysis of $J/ψ\to γη^{\prime} η^{\prime}$

Using a sample of $(10.09~\pm~0.04)\times10^{9} ~J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, a partial wave analysis of $J/ψ\toγη^{\prime}η^{\prime}$ is performed. The masses and widths of the observed resonances and their branching fractions are reported. The main contribution is from $J/ψ\rightarrowγf_0(2020)$ with $f_0(2020)\rightarrowη^{\prime}η^{\prime}$, which is found with a significance of greater than 25$σ$. The product branching fraction ${\cal B}\left(J/ψ\rightarrowγf_0(2020)\right)\cdot{\cal B}\left(f_0(2020)\rightarrowη^{\prime}η^{\prime}\right)$ is measured to be $(2.63\pm0.06({\rm stat.})^{+0.31}_{-0.46}({\rm syst.}))\times10^{-4}$.

Search for the decay $h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ$

A search for the decay $h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ$ is performed using a sample of $h_c$ produced in the reaction $e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-h_c$. The data samples were collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.189 and 4.437 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 11 fb$^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed. Upper limits on the branching ratio $\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ)/\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowγη_c\rightarrowγK^+K^-π^0)$ and on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ)$ are determined to be $7.5\times10^{-2}$ and $4.7\times10^{-4}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, respectively. The latter is derived from the former using the measured branching fraction of the normalization channel. This is the first determination of the upper limit of the decay $h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ$.

Search for Gravitational Waves Associated with Fast Radio Bursts Detected by CHIME/FRB During the LIGO--Virgo Observing Run O3a

We search for gravitational-wave transients associated with fast radio bursts (FRBs) detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst Project (CHIME/FRB), during the first part of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (1 April 2019 15:00 UTC-1 Oct 2019 15:00 UTC). Triggers from 22 FRBs were analyzed with a search that targets compact binary coalescences with at least one neutron star component. A targeted search for generic gravitational-wave transients was conducted on 40 FRBs. We find no significant evidence for a gravitational-wave association in either search. Given the large uncertainties in the distances of the FRBs inferred from the dispersion measures in our sample, however, this does not conclusively exclude any progenitor models that include emission of a gravitational wave of the types searched for from any of these FRB events. We report $90\%$ confidence lower bounds on the distance to each FRB for a range of gravitational-wave progenitor models. By combining the inferred maximum distance information for each FRB with the sensitivity of the gravitational-wave searches, we set upper limits on the energy emitted through gravitational waves for a range of emission scenarios. We find values of order $10^{51}$-$10^{57}$ erg for a range of different emission models with central gravitational wave frequencies in the range 70-3560 Hz. Finally, we also found no significant coincident detection of gravitational waves with the repeater, FRB 20200120E, which is the closest known extragalactic FRB.

Search of the Early O3 LIGO Data for Continuous Gravitational Waves from the Cassiopeia A and Vela Jr. Supernova Remnants

We present directed searches for continuous gravitational waves from the neutron stars in the Cassiopeia A (Cas A) and Vela Jr. supernova remnants. We carry out the searches in the LIGO data from the first six months of the third Advanced LIGO and Virgo observing run, using the Weave semi-coherent method, which sums matched-filter detection-statistic values over many time segments spanning the observation period. No gravitational wave signal is detected in the search band of 20--976 Hz for assumed source ages greater than 300 years for Cas A and greater than 700 years for Vela Jr. Estimates from simulated continuous wave signals indicate we achieve the most sensitive results to date across the explored parameter space volume, probing to strain magnitudes as low as ~$6.3\times10^{-26}$ for Cas A and ~$5.6\times10^{-26}$ for Vela Jr. at frequencies near 166 Hz at 95% efficiency.

Search for new hadronic decays of $h_{c}$ and observation of $h_{c}\to p\bar{p}η$

A search for the hadronic decays of the $h_{c}$ meson to the final states $p\bar{p}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$, $p\bar{p}η$, and $p\bar{p}π^0$ via the process $ψ(3686) \to π^{0}{h_c}$ is performed using $(4.48\pm0.03)\times10^{8}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay channel $h_{c}\to p\bar{p}η$ is observed for the first time with a significance greater than $5σ$ and a branching fraction of $\left( {6.41 \pm 1.74 \pm 0.53 \pm 1.00} \right) \times {10^{ -4}}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and that from the branching fraction of $ψ(3686)\toπ^{0}h_{c}$. Strong evidence for the decay ${h_c} \to p\bar{p}{π^+}{π^-}{π^0}$ is found with a significance of $4.9σ$ and a branching fraction of $\left( {3.84 \pm 0.83 \pm0.69} \pm 0.58 \right) \times {10^{ - 3}}$. The significances include systematic uncertainties. No clear signal of the decay $h_c\to p\bar{p}π^{0}$ is found, and an upper limit of $6.59\times 10^{-4}$ on its branching fraction is set at the 90% confidence level.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of $D_{s}^{+} \to K^-K^+π^+π^+π^-$

Using $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of $6.32$ fb$^{-1}$ collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform an amplitude analysis of the decay $D^+_s \to K^-K^+π^+π^+π^-$ and determine the relative fractions and phases of different intermediate processes. Absolute branching fraction of $D^+_s\to K^-K^+π^+π^+π^-$ decay is measured to be ($6.60\pm0.47_{\rm stat.}\pm0.35_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}$. The dominant intermediate process is $D_{s}^{+} \to a_1(1260)^+ϕ, ϕ\to K^-K^+, a_1(1260)^+\to ρπ^+, ρ\toπ^+π^-$, with a branching fraction of $(5.16\pm0.41_{\rm stat.}\pm0.27_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}$.

Measurement of the branching fraction of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^0\to K^+π^-π^0$ and search for $D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0$

Using $2.93\,\rm fb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773\,GeV with the BESIII detector, we present a measurement of the branching fraction of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed (DCS) decay $D^0\to K^+π^-π^0$ and a search for the DCS decay $D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0$. The branching fraction of $D^0\to K^+π^-π^0$ is determined to be $[3.13^{+0.60}_{-0.56}({\rm stat}) \pm 0.09({\rm syst})] \times 10^{-4}$. No signal is observed for $D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0$ and an upper limit of $3.6 \times 10^{-4}$ is set on the branching fraction at the 90\% C.L. We combine these results with the world-average branching fractions of their counterpart Cabibbo-favored decays to determine the ratios of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed over the Cabibbo-favored branching fractions, ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^+π^-π^0)/{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-π^+π^0)=(0.22\pm 0.04)\%$~and ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0)/{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-π^+π^0π^0)<0.40\%$ at the 90\% C.L., which correspond to $(0.75\pm 0.14)\tan^{4} θ_C$~and $1.37\times \tan^{4} θ_C$, respectively, where $θ_C$ is the Cabibbo angle.

Measurement of the $D \to K^-π^+π^+π^-$ and $D \to K^-π^+π^0$ coherence factors and average strong-phase differences in quantum-correlated ${D\bar{D}}$ decays

The decays $D\to K^-π^+π^+π^-$ and $D \to K^-π^+π^0$ are studied in a sample of quantum-correlated $D\bar{D}$ pairs produced through the process $e^+e^- \to ψ(3770) \to D\bar{D}$, exploiting a data set collected by the BESIII experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$. Here $D$ indicates a quantum superposition of a $D^0$ and a $\bar{D}^0$ meson. By reconstructing one neutral charm meson in a signal decay, and the other in the same or a different final state, observables are measured that contain information on the coherence factors and average strong-phase differences of each of the signal modes. These parameters are critical inputs in the measurement of the angle $γ$ of the Unitarity Triangle in $B^- \to DK^-$ decays at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. The coherence factors are determined to be $R_{K3π}=0.52^{+0.12}_{-0.10}$ and $R_{Kππ^0}=0.78 \pm 0.04$, with values for the average strong-phase differences that are $δ_D^{K3π}=\left(167^{+31}_{-19}\right)^\circ$ and $δ_D^{Kππ^0}=\left(196^{+14}_{-15}\right)^\circ$, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. The analysis is re-performed in four bins of the phase-space of the $D \to K^-π^+π^+π^-$ to yield results that will allow for a more sensitive measurement of $γ$ with this mode, to which the BESIII inputs will contribute an uncertainty of around 6$^\circ$.

Measurement of $Λ$ baryon polarization in $e^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ at $\sqrt{s} = 3.773$ GeV

Using a data sample of $ψ(3770)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb$^{-1}$, we report a measurement of $Λ$ spin polarization in $e^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ at $\sqrt{s} = 3.773$ GeV. The significance of polarization is found to be 2$σ$ including the systematic uncertainty, which implies a zero phase between the transition amplitudes of the $Λ\barΛ$ helicity states. This phase can be interpreted in terms of psionic form factors, and is determined to be $ΔΦ^Ψ$ = $Φ^Ψ_{E} - Φ^Ψ_{M}$ = $(71^{+66}_{-46}$ $\pm$ 5)$^{\circ}$. Similarly, the ratio between the form factors is found to be $R^ψ$ = $|G^Ψ_{E}/G^Ψ_{M}|$ = $0.48^{+0.12}_{-0.07}$ $\pm$ 0.04. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of $e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$ cross section and observation of a resonant structure

Based on $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies from 2.000 to 3.080 GeV, a partial-wave analysis is performed for the process $e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$. The Born cross section of the process $e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$ and its subprocesses $e^{+}e^{-} \to ϕπ^{0}$, $K^{*}(892)K$ and $K^{*}_{2}(1430)K$ are measured. The results for $e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$ and $ϕπ^{0}$ are consistent with the BaBar measurements and with improved precision. By analyzing the cross section, of the subprocesses $e^{+}e^{-} \to$ $K^{*}(892)K$ and $K^{*}_{2}(1430)K$, a structure with mass $M_R$ = (2208 $\pm$ 19 $\pm$ 24) MeV/$c^{2}$ and width $Γ_R$ = (168 $\pm$ 24 $\pm$ 39) MeV is observed with a combined statistical significance of 7.6$σ$. The measured resonance parameters suggest it can be identified as the $ϕ(2170)$, thus the results provide valuable input to understand the internal nature of this state.

Search for anisotropic gravitational-wave backgrounds using data from Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo's first three observing runs

We report results from searches for anisotropic stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds using data from the first three observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. For the first time, we include Virgo data in our analysis and run our search with a new efficient pipeline called {\tt PyStoch} on data folded over one sidereal day. We use gravitational-wave radiometry (broadband and narrow band) to produce sky maps of stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and to search for gravitational waves from point sources. A spherical harmonic decomposition method is employed to look for gravitational-wave emission from spatially-extended sources. Neither technique found evidence of gravitational-wave signals. Hence we derive 95\% confidence-level upper limit sky maps on the gravitational-wave energy flux from broadband point sources, ranging from $F_{α, Θ} < {\rm (0.013 - 7.6)} \times 10^{-8} {\rm erg \, cm^{-2} \, s^{-1} \, Hz^{-1}},$ and on the (normalized) gravitational-wave energy density spectrum from extended sources, ranging from $Ω_{α, Θ} < {\rm (0.57 - 9.3)} \times 10^{-9} \, {\rm sr^{-1}}$, depending on direction ($Θ$) and spectral index ($α$). These limits improve upon previous limits by factors of $2.9 - 3.5$. We also set 95\% confidence level upper limits on the frequency-dependent strain amplitudes of quasimonochromatic gravitational waves coming from three interesting targets, Scorpius X-1, SN 1987A and the Galactic Center, with best upper limits range from $h_0 < {\rm (1.7-2.1)} \times 10^{-25},$ a factor of $\geq 2.0$ improvement compared to previous stochastic radiometer searches.

Observation of a state $X(2600)$ in the $π^{+}π^{-}η'$ system in the process $J/ψ\rightarrowγπ^{+}π^{-}η'$

Based on $(10087\pm44)\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the process $J/ψ\rightarrowγπ^{+}π^{-}η'$ is studied using two dominant decay channels of the $η'$ meson, $η'\rightarrowγπ^{+}π^{-}$ and $η'\rightarrowηπ^{+}π^{-},η\rightarrowγγ$. The $X(2600)$ is observed with a statistical significance larger than 20$σ$ in the $π^{+}π^{-}η'$ invariant mass spectrum, and it has a strong correlation to a structure around 1.5$~\mathrm{GeV}$/{\it c}$^{2}$ in the $π^{+}π^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum. A simultaneous fit on the $π^{+}π^{-}η'$ and $π^{+}π^{-}$ invariant mass spectra with the two $η'$ decay modes indicates that the mass and width of the $X(2600)$ state are $2617.8\pm2.1 ^{+18.2}_{-1.9}~\mathrm{MeV}$/{\it c}$^{2}$ and $200\pm8^{+20}_{-17}~\mathrm{MeV}$, respectively. The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be $B(J/ψ\rightarrowγX(2600))\cdot B(X(2600)\rightarrow f_{0}(1500)η')\cdot B(f_{0}(1500)\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{-})$ = ($3.39\pm0.18^{+0.91}_{-0.66})\times10^{-5}$ and $B(J/ψ\rightarrowγX(2600))\cdot B(X(2600)\rightarrow f_{2}^{'}(1525)η')\cdot B(f_{2}^{'}(1525)\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{-})$ = ($2.43\pm0.13^{+0.31}_{-1.11})\times10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second systematic.

Search for gravitational waves from Scorpius X-1 with a hidden Markov model in O3 LIGO data

Results are presented for a semi-coherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the low-mass X-ray binary Scorpius X-1, using a hidden Markov model (HMM) to allow for spin wandering. This search improves on previous HMM-based searches of Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) data by including the orbital period in the search template grid, and by analyzing data from the latest (third) observing run (O3). In the frequency range searched, from 60 to 500 Hz, we find no evidence of gravitational radiation. This is the most sensitive search for Scorpius X-1 using a HMM to date. For the most sensitive sub-band, starting at $256.06$Hz, we report an upper limit on gravitational wave strain (at $95 \%$ confidence) of $h_{0}^{95\%}=6.16\times10^{-26}$, assuming the orbital inclination angle takes its electromagnetically restricted value $ι=44^{\circ}$. The upper limits on gravitational wave strain reported here are on average a factor of $\sim 3$ lower than in the O2 HMM search. This is the first Scorpius X-1 HMM search with upper limits that reach below the indirect torque-balance limit for certain sub-bands, assuming $ι=44^{\circ}$.

Search for continuous gravitational waves from 20 accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars in O3 LIGO data

Results are presented of searches for continuous gravitational waves from 20 accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars with accurately measured spin frequencies and orbital parameters, using data from the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The search algorithm uses a hidden Markov model, where the transition probabilities allow the frequency to wander according to an unbiased random walk, while the $\mathcal{J}$-statistic maximum-likelihood matched filter tracks the binary orbital phase. Three narrow sub-bands are searched for each target, centered on harmonics of the measured spin frequency. The search yields 16 candidates, consistent with a false alarm probability of 30% per sub-band and target searched. These candidates, along with one candidate from an additional target-of-opportunity search done for SAX J1808.4$-$3658, which was in outburst during one month of the observing run, cannot be confidently associated with a known noise source. Additional follow-up does not provide convincing evidence that any are a true astrophysical signal. When all candidates are assumed non-astrophysical, upper limits are set on the maximum wave strain detectable at 95% confidence, $h_0^{95\%}$. The strictest constraint is $h_0^{95\%} = 4.7\times 10^{-26}$ from IGR J17062$-$6143. Constraints on the detectable wave strain from each target lead to constraints on neutron star ellipticity and $r$-mode amplitude, the strictest of which are $ε^{95\%} = 3.1\times 10^{-7}$ and $α^{95\%} = 1.8\times 10^{-5}$ respectively. This analysis is the most comprehensive and sensitive search of continuous gravitational waves from accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars to date.

Search for a $CP$-odd light Higgs boson in $J/ψ\to γA^0$

Using $J/ψ$ radiative decays from 9.0 billion $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII detector, we search for di-muon decays of a $CP$-odd light Higgs boson ($A^0$), predicted by many new physics models beyond the Standard Model, including the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. No evidence for the $CP$-odd light Higgs production is found, and we set $90\%$ confidence level upper limits on the product branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to γA^0)\times \mathcal{B}(A^0 \to μ^+μ^-)$ in the range of $(1.2-778.0)\times 10^{-9}$ for $0.212 \le m_{A^0} \le 3.0$ GeV/$c^2$. The new measurement is a 6-7 times improvement over our previous measurement, and is also slightly better than the BaBar measurement in the low-mass region for $\tan β=1$.

Constraints from LIGO O3 data on gravitational-wave emission due to r-modes in the glitching pulsar PSR J0537-6910

We present a search for continuous gravitational-wave emission due to r-modes in the pulsar PSR J0537-6910 using data from the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration observing run O3. PSR J0537-6910 is a young energetic X-ray pulsar and is the most frequent glitcher known. The inter-glitch braking index of the pulsar suggests that gravitational-wave emission due to r-mode oscillations may play an important role in the spin evolution of this pulsar. Theoretical models confirm this possibility and predict emission at a level that can be probed by ground-based detectors. In order to explore this scenario, we search for r-mode emission in the epochs between glitches by using a contemporaneous timing ephemeris obtained from NICER data. We do not detect any signals in the theoretically expected band of 86-97 Hz, and report upper limits on the amplitude of the gravitational waves. Our results improve on previous amplitude upper limits from r-modes in J0537-6910 by a factor of up to 3 and place stringent constraints on theoretical models for r-mode driven spin-down in PSR J0537-6910, especially for higher frequencies at which our results reach below the spin-down limit defined by energy conservation.
