Measurements of the branching fractions for the semi-leptonic decays $D^+_s\toϕe^{+}ν_{e}$, $ϕμ^{+}ν_μ$, $ημ^{+}ν_μ$ and $η'μ^{+}ν_μ$

By analyzing 482 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s=4.009$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the %absolute branching fractions for the semi-leptonic decays $D_{s}^{+}\to ϕe^{+}ν_{e}$, $ϕμ^{+}ν_μ$, $ημ^{+}ν_μ$ and $η'μ^{+}ν_μ$ to be ${\mathcal B}(D_{s}^{+}\toϕe^{+}ν_{e})=(2.26\pm0.45\pm0.09)$\%, ${\mathcal B}(D_{s}^{+}\toϕμ^{+}ν_μ)=(1.94\pm0.53\pm0.09)$\%, ${\mathcal B}(D_{s}^{+}\toημ^{+}ν_μ)=(2.42\pm0.46\pm0.11)$\% and ${\mathcal B}(D_{s}^{+}\toη'μ^{+} ν_μ) = (1.06\pm0.54\pm0.07)$\%, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The branching fractions for the three semi-muonic decays $D_s^+\toϕμ^+ν_μ, ημ^+ν_μ$ and $η' μ^+ν_μ$ are determined for the first time and that of $D^+_s\to ϕe^+ν_e$ is consistent with the world average value within uncertainties.

Evidence for $e^{+}e^{-} \to γη_c(1S)$ at center-of-mass energies between 4.01 and 4.60 GeV

We present first evidence for the process $e^+e^-\to γη_c(1S)$ at six center-of-mass energies between 4.01 and 4.60~GeV using data collected by the BESIII experiment operating at BEPCII. These data sets correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 4.6~fb$^{-1}$. We measure the Born cross section at each energy using a combination of twelve $η_c(1S)$ decay channels. Because the significance of the signal is marginal at each energy ($\le3.0σ$), we also combine all six energies under various assumptions for the energy-dependence of the cross section. If the process is assumed to proceed via the $Y(4260)$, we measure a peak Born cross section $σ_{\mathrm{ peak}}(e^+e^-\toγη_c(1S)) = 2.11 \pm 0.49 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.36 (\mathrm{syst.})$~pb with a statistical significance of 4.2$σ$.

Some Mathematical Aspects of Price Optimisation

Calculation of an optimal tariff is a principal challenge for pricing actuaries. In this contribution we are concerned with the renewal insurance business discussing various mathematical aspects of calculation of an optimal renewal tariff. Our motivation comes from two important actuarial tasks, namely a) construction of an optimal renewal tariff subject to business and technical constraints, and b) determination of an optimal allocation of certain premium loadings. We consider both continuous and discrete optimisation and then present several algorithmic sub-optimal solutions. Additionally, we explore some simulation techniques. Several illustrative examples show both the complexity and the importance of the optimisation approach.

A Method for Selecting M dwarfs with an Increased Likelihood of Unresolved Ultra-cool Companionship

Locating ultra-cool companions to M dwarfs is important for constraining low-mass formation models, the measurement of sub-stellar dynamical masses and radii, and for testing ultra-cool evolutionary models. We present an optimised method for identifying M dwarfs which may have unresolved ultra-cool companions. We construct a catalogue of 440,694 candidates, from WISE, 2MASS and SDSS, based on optical and near-infrared colours and reduced proper motion. With strict reddening, photometric and quality constraints we isolate a sub-sample of 36,898 M dwarfs and search for possible mid-infrared M dwarf + ultra-cool dwarf candidates by comparing M dwarfs which have similar optical/near-infrared colours (chosen for their sensitivity to effective temperature and metallicity). We present 1,082 M dwarf + ultra-cool dwarf candidates for follow-up. Using simulated ultra-cool dwarf companions to M dwarfs, we estimate that the occurrence of unresolved ultra-cool companions amongst our M dwarf + ultra-cool dwarf candidates should be at least four times the average for our full M dwarf catalogue. We discuss possible contamination and bias and predict yields of candidates based on our simulations.

Square Kilometer Array Telescope - Precision Reference Frequency Synchronisation via 1f-2f Dissemination

The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) is an international effort to build the world's largest radio telescope, with one square kilometer collecting area. Besides its ambitious scientific objectives, such as probing the cosmic dawn and cradle of life, SKA also demands several revolutionary technological breakthroughs, with ultra-high precision synchronisation of the frequency references for thousands of antennas being one of them. In this report, aimed at applications to SKA, we demonstrate a frequency reference synchronization and dissemination scheme with the phase noise compensation function placed at the client site. Hence, one central hub can be linked to a large number of client sites, forming a star-shaped topology. As a performance test, the 100 MHz reference signal from a Hydrogen maser clock is disseminated and recovered at two remote sites. Phase noise characteristics of the recovered reference frequency signal coincides with that of the hydrogen-maser source and satisfies SKA requirement.

Fiber-based Radio Frequency Dissemination for Branching Networks with Passive Phase Noise Cancellation

We demonstrate a new fiber-based radio frequency dissemination scheme for branching networks. Without any phase controls on RF signals or usages of active feedback locking components, the highly stable reference frequency signal can be delivered to several remote sites simultaneously and independently. Relative frequency stability of 6E-15/s and 7E-17/1E4s is obtained for 10km dissemination. The proposed low cost and scalable method can be applied to some large-scale frequency synchronization networks.

Neutrino Lighthouse at Sagittarius A*

We investigate whether a subset of high-energy events observed by IceCube may be due to neutrinos from Sagittarius A*. We check both spatial and temporal coincidences of IceCube events with other transient activities of Sagittarius A*. Among the seven IceCube shower events nearest to the galactic center, we have found that event 25 has a time very close to (around three hours after) the brightest X-ray flare of Sagittarius A* observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory with a p-value of 0.9%. Furthermore, two of the seven events occurred within one day of each other (there is a 1.6% probability that this would occur for a random distribution in time). Thus, the determination that some IceCube events occur at similar times as X-ray flares and others occur in a burst could be the smoking gun that Sagittarius A* is a point source of very high energy neutrinos. We point out that if IceCube galactic center neutrino events originate from charged pion decays, then TeV gamma rays should come from neutral pion decays at a similar rate. We show that the CTA, HAWC, H.E.S.S. and VERITAS experiments should be sensitive enough to test this.

First Look at the Physics Case of TLEP

The discovery by the ATLAS and CMS experiments of a new boson with mass around 125 GeV and with measured properties compatible with those of a Standard-Model Higgs boson, coupled with the absence of discoveries of phenomena beyond the Standard Model at the TeV scale, has triggered interest in ideas for future Higgs factories. A new circular e+e- collider hosted in a 80 to 100 km tunnel, TLEP, is among the most attractive solutions proposed so far. It has a clean experimental environment, produces high luminosity for top-quark, Higgs boson, W and Z studies, accommodates multiple detectors, and can reach energies up to the t-tbar threshold and beyond. It will enable measurements of the Higgs boson properties and of Electroweak Symmetry-Breaking (EWSB) parameters with unequalled precision, offering exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model in the multi-TeV range. Moreover, being the natural precursor of the VHE-LHC, a 100 TeV hadron machine in the same tunnel, it builds up a long-term vision for particle physics. Altogether, the combination of TLEP and the VHE-LHC offers, for a great cost effectiveness, the best precision and the best search reach of all options presently on the market. This paper presents a first appraisal of the salient features of the TLEP physics potential, to serve as a baseline for a more extensive design study.

First results on low-mass WIMP from the CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping underground Laboratory

The China Dark matter Experiment collaboration reports the first experimental limit on WIMP dark matter from 14.6 kg-day of data taken with a 994 g p-type point-contact germanium detector at the China Jinping underground Laboratory where the rock overburden is more than 2400 m. The energy threshold achieved was 400 eVee. According to the 14.6 kg-day live data, we placed the limit of N= 1.75 * 10^{-40} cm^{2} at 90% confidence level on the spin-independent cross-section at WIMP mass of 7 GeV before differentiating bulk signals from the surface backgrounds.

Fiber Based Multiple-Access Optical Frequency Dissemination

We demonstrate a fiber based multiple-access optical frequency dissemination scheme. Without using any additional laser sources, we reproduce the stable disseminated frequency at an arbitrary point of fiber link. Relative frequency stability of 3E10^{-16}/s and 4E10^{-18}/10^4s is obtained. A branching fiber network for highly-precision synchronization of optical frequency is made possible by this method and its applications are discussed.

A search for dark matter in events with one jet and missing transverse energy in pp-bar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

We present the results of a search for dark matter production in the monojet signature. We analyze a sample of Tevatron pp-bar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7/fb recorded by the CDF II detector. In events with large missing transverse energy and one energetic jet, we find good agreement between the standard model prediction and the observed data. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the dark matter production rate. The limits are translated into bounds on nucleon-dark matter scattering rates which are competitive with current direct detection bounds on spin-independent interaction below a dark matter candidate mass of 5 GeV/c^2, and on spin-dependent interactions up to masses of 200 GeV/c^2.

M dwarf Stars - The By-Product of X-Ray Selected AGN Candidates

X-ray loud M dwarfs are a major source of by-product (contamination) in the X-ray band of the multiwavelength quasar survey (MWQS). As a by-product, the low dispersion spectra of 22 M dwarfs are obtained in which the spectra of 16 sources are taken for the first time. The spectral types and distance of the sample are given based on spectral indices CaH2, CaH3, and TiO5. The parameter ζTiO/CaH is calculated to make the metallicity class separation among dwarfs, subdwarfs and extreme subdwarfs. We also discuss the distributions in the diagrams of Log(Lx/Lbol) versus spectral type and infrared colors.

Beam-Energy and System-Size Dependence of Dynamical Net Charge Fluctuations

We present measurements of net charge fluctuations in $Au + Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV, $Cu + Cu$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 62.4, 200 GeV, and $p + p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 200 GeV using the dynamical net charge fluctuations measure $ν_{+-{\rm,dyn}}$. We observe that the dynamical fluctuations are non-zero at all energies and exhibit a modest dependence on beam energy. A weak system size dependence is also observed. We examine the collision centrality dependence of the net charge fluctuations and find that dynamical net charge fluctuations violate $1/N_{ch}$ scaling, but display approximate $1/N_{part}$ scaling. We also study the azimuthal and rapidity dependence of the net charge correlation strength and observe strong dependence on the azimuthal angular range and pseudorapidity widths integrated to measure the correlation.

Giant magnetoelectric effect under high bias fields in cylindrical bilayered Ni-PZT composites

For conventional plate and disc layered magnetoelectric (ME) composites, the ME effect appeared under low bias magnetic fields, which caused by line magnetostriction. In this paper, we present a new structure ME composites, cylindrical bilayered composites. Unexpectedly, the ME effect also appeared under high magnetic fields in this cylindrical bilayered Ni-lead zirconate titanate (PZT) composite. We thought this ME effect caused by volume magnetostriction. The results showed that the ME voltage coefficient of the cylindrical bilayered composite of Ni-PZT was the sum of aE(l) caused by line magnetostriction under low bias fields and aE(w) induced by volume magnetostriction under high fields. At the resonance frequency, aE,A(w) increased linearly with bias magnetic field HDC to 30 V/cm Oe at HDC =8 kOe, and was much larger than aE,A(l) at Hm=0.6 kOe. The novel characteristic of ME voltage coefficient increased linearly with the rise of HDC after 1 kOe in axial mode makes the cylindrical composite a promising candidate for application in high magnetic field sensor.

Shape demagnetization effect on layered magnetoelectric composites

Magnetoelectric (ME) voltage coefficient was always considered independent on in-plane shape of plate layered magnetostrictive-piezoelectric composites due to the oversimplification in ME theoretical models. In this article, we present that in fact the ME voltage coefficient is largely dependent on the in-plane shape owing to shape demagnetization effect on magnetostrictivity. Theoretical analysis and experimental results both indicate that ME voltage coefficient changes notably with the variation of in-plane sizes (length and width) of layered ME properties. ME coefficient increases with the rise of in-plane sizes, and different aspect ratio will also result in different ME coefficient. Proper design of in-plane shape will greatly promote the development of ME devices.

Magnetoelectric Effect in Ni-PZT-Ni Cylindrical Layered Composite Synthesized by Electro-deposition

The magnetoelectric (ME) coupling of cylindrical trilayered composite was studied in this paper. The Ni-lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-Ni trilayered cylindrical composite was synthesized by electro-deposition. The maximum ME voltage coefficient of cylindrical ME composite is 35V/cm Oe, about three times higher than that of the plate trilayered composite with the same raw materials and magnetostrictive- piezoelectric phase thickness ratio. The high ME voltage coefficient of cylindrical composite owes to the self-bound effect of circle. Moreover, the resulting complex condition can induce a double peak in the field dependence of ME coefficient.

Ni-PZT-Ni Trilayered Magnetoelectric composites Synthesized by Electro-deposition

We report the high strength of magnetoelectric (ME) coupling of trilayered composites prepared by electro-deposition. The ME coupling of Ni-lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-Ni trilayered structure was measured ranged from1 kHz to 120 kHz. The trilayered composites exhibit high magnetoelectric voltage coefficient because of good bonding between piezoelectric and magnetostrictive layers. The maximum magnetoelectric voltage coefficient can be up to 33 V/cm Oe at the electromechanical resonance frequency. This magnetoelectric effect shows promising application in transducers for magnetoelectric energy conversion.
