Evidence for the Direct Two-Photon Transition from $ψ(3686)$ to $J/ψ$

The two-photon transition $ψ(3686)\toγγJ/ψ$ is studied in a sample of 106 million $ψ(3686)$ decays collected by the BESIII detector. The branching fraction is measured to be $(3.1\pm0.6(\unit{stat})^{+0.8}_{-1.0}(\unit{syst})) \times10^{-4}$ using $J/ψ\to e^+e^-$ and $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$ decays, and its upper limit is estimated to be $4.5\times10^{-4}$ at the 90% conference level. This work represents the first measurement of a two-photon transition among charmonium states. The orientation of the $ψ(3686)$ decay plane and the $J/ψ$ polarization in this decay are also studied. In addition, the product branching fractions of sequential $E1$ transitions $ψ(3686)\toγχ_{cJ}, χ_{cJ}\toγJ/ψ(J=0,1,2)$ are reported.

Experimental study of psi' decays to K+K- pi^0 and K+K- eta

Using $(106\pm4)\times 10^6$ $\psip$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider, we present measurements of the branching fractions for psi' decays to $K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$ and $K^{+}K^{-}η$. In these final states, the decay $ψ'\to K_2^{*}(1430)^+K^-+c.c.$ is observed for the first time, and its branching fraction is measured to be $(7.12\pm{0.62}{\rm (stat.)}^{+1.13}_{-0.61}{\rm (syst.)})\times 10^{-5}$, which indicates a violation of the helicity selection rule in $\psip$ decays. The branching fractions of $ψ'\to K^*(892)^+K^-+c.c., ϕη, ϕπ^0$ are also measured. The measurements are used to test the QCD predictions on charmonium decays.

Long-term Monitoring on Mrk 501 for Its VHE gamma Emission and a Flare in October 2011

As one of the brightest active blazars in both X-ray and very high energy $γ$-ray bands, Mrk 501 is very useful for physics associated with jets from AGNs. The ARGO-YBJ experiment is monitoring it for $γ$-rays above 0.3 TeV since November 2007. Starting from October 2011 the largest flare since 2005 is observed, which lasts to about April 2012. In this paper, a detailed analysis is reported. During the brightest $γ$-rays flaring episodes from October 17 to November 22, 2011, an excess of the event rate over 6 $σ$ is detected by ARGO-YBJ in the direction of Mrk 501, corresponding to an increase of the $γ$-ray flux above 1 TeV by a factor of 6.6$\pm$2.2 from its steady emission. In particular, the $γ$-ray flux above 8 TeV is detected with a significance better than 4 $σ$. Based on time-dependent synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) processes, the broad-band energy spectrum is interpreted as the emission from an electron energy distribution parameterized with a single power-law function with an exponential cutoff at its high energy end. The average spectral energy distribution for the steady emission is well described by this simple one-zone SSC model. However, the detection of $γ$-rays above 8 TeV during the flare challenges this model due to the hardness of the spectra. Correlations between X-rays and $γ$-rays are also investigated.

First observation of the isospin violating decay $J/ψ\rightarrow Λ\barΣ^{0}+c.c.$

Using a sample of $(225.2\pm 2.8)\times 10^6$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present results of a study of $J/ψ\rightarrow γΛ\barΛ$ and report the first observation of the isospin violating decay $J/ψ\rightarrowΛ\barΣ^{0}+c.c.$, in which $\barΣ^{0}$ decays to $γ\barΛ$. The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrow\barΛΣ^{0}$) = $(1.46\pm0.11\pm0.12) \times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrowΛ\bar{Σ^{0}}$) = $(1.37\pm0.12\pm0.11) \times10^{-5}$. We search for $Λ(1520) \rightarrow γΛ$ decay, and find no evident signal, and an upper limit for the product branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrowΛ\barΛ(1520)+c.c.)\times \mathcal{B}(Λ(1520)\rightarrowγΛ)<4.1 \times10^{-6}$ is set at the 90% confidence level. We also report the observation of $η_{c}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ in $J/ψ\rightarrow γη_{c}$, $η_{c}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ and measure the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(η_{c}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ) =(1.16\pm0.12 (stat)\pm0.19(syst)\pm0.28(PDG))\times10^{-3}$.

Study of $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}$ and $J/ψ\to n\bar{n}$

The decays $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}$ and $J/ψ\to n\bar{n}$ have been investigated with a sample of 225.2 million $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p\bar{p})=(2.112\pm0.004\pm0.031)\times10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to n\bar{n})=(2.07\pm0.01\pm0.17)\times10^{-3}$. Distributions of the angle $θ$ between the proton or anti-neutron and the beam direction are well described by the form $1+α\cos^2θ$, and we find $α=0.595\pm0.012\pm0.015$ for $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}$ and $α=0.50\pm0.04\pm0.21$ for $J/ψ\to n\bar{n}$. Our branching-fraction results suggest a large phase angle between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes describing the $J/ψ\to N\bar{N}$ decay.

Evidence for two-gap superconductivity in the non-centrosymmetric compound LaNiC$_2$

We study the superconducting properties of the non-centrosymmetric compound LaNiC$_2$ by measuring the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$, the specific heat $C(T,B)$ and the electrical resistivity $ρ(T,B)$. Both $Δλ(T)$ and the electronic specific heat $C_e(T)$ exhibit exponential behavior at low temperatures and can be described in terms of a phenomenological two-gap BCS model. The residual Sommerfeld coefficient in the superconducting state, $γ_0(B)$, shows a fast increase at low fields and then an eventual saturation with increasing magnetic field. A pronounced upturn curvature is observed in the upper critical field $B_{c2}(T)$ near $T_{c}$. All the experimental observations support the existence of two-gap superconductivity in LaNiC$_2$.

Evidence For A Mild Steepening And Bottom-Heavy IMF In Massive Galaxies From Sodium And Titanium-Oxide Indicators

We measure equivalent widths (EW) - focussing on two unique features (NaI and TiO2) of low-mass stars (<0.3M\odot) - for luminous red galaxy spectra from the the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and X-Shooter Lens Survey (XLENS) in order to study the low-mass end of the initial mass function (IMF). We compare these EWs to those derived from simple stellar population models computed with different IMFs, ages, [α/Fe], and elemental abundances. We find that models are able to simultaneously reproduce the observed NaD λ5895 and Na I λ8190 features for lower-mass (\sim σ\ast) early-type galaxies (ETGs) but deviate increasingly for more massive ETGs, due do strongly mismatching NaD EWs. The TiO2 λ6230 and the Na I λ8190 features together appear to be a powerful IMF diagnostic, with age and metallicity effects orthogonal to the effect of IMF. We find that both features correlate strongly with galaxy velocity dispersion. The XLENS ETG (SDSSJ0912+0029) and an SDSS ETG (SDSSJ0041-0914) appear to require both an extreme dwarf-rich IMF and a high sodium enhancement ([Na/Fe] = +0.4). In addition, lensing constraints on the total mass of the XLENS system within its Einstein radius limit a bottom-heavy IMF with a power-law slope to x \leq 3.0 at the 90% C.L. We conclude that NaI and TiO features, in comparison with state-of-the-art SSP models, suggest a mildly steepening IMF from Salpeter (dn/dm \propto m-x with x = 2.35) to x \approx 3.0 for ETGs in the range σ = 200 - 335 km s-1.

Measurements of the mass and width of the eta_c using psi' -> gamma eta_c

The mass and width of the lowest lying S-wave spin singlet charmonium state, the eta_c, are measured using a data sample of 1.06x10^8 psi' decays collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. We use a model that incorporates interference between the signal reaction, psi' -> gamma eta_c, and a non-resonant radiative background to successfully describe the line shape of the eta_c. We measure the eta_c mass to be 2984.3 +- 0.6 +- 0.6 MeV/c^2 and the total width to be 32.0 +- 1.2 +- 1.0 MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

Phase Fluctuations and the Absence of Topological Defects in Photo-excited Charge Ordered Nickelate

The dynamics of an order parameter's amplitude and phase determines the collective behaviour of novel states emerged in complex materials. Time- and momentum-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, by virtue of its ability to measure material properties at atomic and electronic time scales and create excited states not accessible by the conventional means can decouple entangled degrees of freedom by visualizing their corresponding dynamics in the time domain. Here, combining time-resolved femotosecond optical and resonant x-ray diffraction measurements on striped La1.75Sr0.25NiO4, we reveal unforeseen photo-induced phase fluctuations of the charge order parameter. Such fluctuations preserve long-range order without creating topological defects, unlike thermal phase fluctuations near the critical temperature in equilibrium10. Importantly, relaxation of the phase fluctuations are found to be an order of magnitude slower than that of the order parameter's amplitude fluctuations, and thus limit charge order recovery. This discovery of new aspect to phase fluctuation provides more holistic view for the importance of phase in ordering phenomena of quantum matter.

First observation of the M1 transition $ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S)$

Using a sample of 106 million ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we have made the first measurement of the M1 transition between the radially excited charmonium S-wave spin-triplet and the radially excited S-wave spin-singlet states: ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S). Analyses of the processes ψ(2S)\to γη_c(2S) with η_c(2S)\to \K_S^0 Kπand K^+K^-π^0 gave an η_c(2S) signal with a statistical significance of greater than 10 standard deviations under a wide range of assumptions about the signal and background properties. The data are used to obtain measurements of the η_c(2S) mass (M(η_c(2S))=3637.6\pm 2.9_\mathrm{stat}\pm 1.6_\mathrm{sys} MeV/c^2), width (Γ(η_c(2S))=16.9\pm 6.4_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.8_\mathrm{sys} MeV), and the product branching fraction (\BR(ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S))\times \BR(η_c(2S)\to K\bar Kπ) = (1.30\pm 0.20_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.30_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-5}). Combining our result with a BaBar measurement of \BR(η_c(2S)\to K\bar K π), we find the branching fraction of the M1 transition to be \BR(ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S)) = (6.8\pm 1.1_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.5_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-4}.

Two-photon widths of the $χ_{c0, 2}$ states and helicity analysis for $χ_{c2}\arγγ$}

Based on a data sample of 106 M $ψ^{\prime}$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays $ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0, 2}$,$χ_{c0, 2}\arγγ$ are studied to determine the two-photon widths of the $χ_{c0, 2}$ states. The two-photon decay branching fractions are determined to be ${\cal B}(χ_{c0}\arγγ) = (2.24\pm 0.19\pm 0.12\pm 0.08)\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(χ_{c2}\arγγ) = (3.21\pm 0.18\pm 0.17\pm 0.13)\times 10^{-4}$. From these, the two-photon widths are determined to be $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0}) = (2.33\pm0.20\pm0.13\pm0.17)$ keV, $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = (0.63\pm0.04\pm0.04\pm0.04)$ keV, and $\cal R$ $=Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0})=0.271\pm 0.029\pm 0.013\pm 0.027$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and those from the PDG ${\cal B}(ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0,2})$ and $Γ(χ_{c0,2})$ errors, respectively. The ratio of the two-photon widths for helicity $λ=0$ and helicity $λ=2$ components in the decay $χ_{c2}\arγγ$ is measured for the first time to be $f_{0/2} =Γ^{λ=0}_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ^{λ=2}_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = 0.00\pm0.02\pm0.02$.

Radio signatures of CME-streamer interaction and source diagnostics of type II radio burst

It has been suggested that type II radio bursts are due to energetic electrons accelerated at coronal shocks. Radio observations, however, have poor or no spatial resolutions to pinpoint the exact acceleration locations of these electrons. In this paper, we discuss a promising approach to infer the electron acceleration location by combining radio and white light observations. The key assumption is to relate specific morphological features (e.g. spectral bumps) of the dynamic spectra of type II radio bursts, to imaging features (e.g. CME going into a streamer) along the CME (and its driven shock) propagation. In this study, we examine the CME-streamer interaction for the solar eruption dated on 2003 November 1. The presence of spectral bump in the relevant type II radio burst is identified, which is interpreted as a natural result of the shock-radio emitting region entering the dense streamer structure. The study is useful for further determinations of the location of type II radio burst and the associated electron acceleration by CME-driven shock.

Implications For The Origin Of GRB 051103 From LIGO Observations

We present the results of a LIGO search for gravitational waves (GWs) associated with GRB 051103, a short-duration hard-spectrum gamma-ray burst (GRB) whose electromagnetically determined sky position is coincident with the spiral galaxy M81, which is 3.6 Mpc from Earth. Possible progenitors for short-hard GRBs include compact object mergers and soft gamma repeater (SGR) giant flares. A merger progenitor would produce a characteristic GW signal that should be detectable at the distance of M81, while GW emission from an SGR is not expected to be detectable at that distance. We found no evidence of a GW signal associated with GRB 051103. Assuming weakly beamed gamma-ray emission with a jet semi-angle of 30 deg we exclude a binary neutron star merger in M81 as the progenitor with a confidence of 98%. Neutron star-black hole mergers are excluded with > 99% confidence. If the event occurred in M81 our findings support the the hypothesis that GRB 051103 was due to an SGR giant flare, making it the most distant extragalactic magnetar observed to date.

A population of isolated hard X-ray sources near the supernova remnant Kes 69

Recent X-ray observations of the supernova remnant IC443 interacting with molecular clouds have shown the presence of a new population of hard X-ray sources related to the remnant itself, which has been interpreted in terms of fast ejecta fragment propagating inside the dense environment. Prompted by these studies, we have obtained a deep {\sl XMM-Newton} observation of the supernova remnant (SNR) Kes 69, which also shows signs of shock-cloud interaction. We report on the detection of 18 hard X-ray sources in the field of Kes 69, a significant excess of the expected galactic source population in the field, spatially correlated with CO emission from the cloud in the remnant environment. The spectra of 3 of the 18 sources can be described as hard power laws with photon index <2 plus line emission associated to K-shell transitions. We discuss the two most promising scenarios for the interpretation of the sources, namely fast ejecta fragments (as in IC443) and cataclysmic variables. While most of the observational evidences are consistent with the former interpretation, we cannot rule out the latter.

X-ray Phase-Resolved Spectroscopy of PSRs B0531+21, B1509-58, and B0540-69 with RXTE

The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ({\sl RXTE}) has made hundreds of observations on three famous young pulsars (PSRs) B0531+21 (Crab), B1509-58, and B0540-69. Using the archive {\sl RXTE} data, we have studied the phase-resolved spectral properties of these pulsars in details. The variation of the X-ray spectrum with phase of PSR B0531+21 is confirmed here much more precisely and more details are revealed than the previous studies: the spectrum softens from the beginning of the first pulse, turns to harden right at the pulse peak and becomes the hardest at the bottom of the bridge, softens gradually until the second peak, and then softens rapidly. Different from the previous studies, we found that the spectrum of PSR B1509-58 is significantly harder in the center of the pulse, which is also in contrast to that of PSR B0531+21. The variation of the X-ray spectrum of PSR B0540-69 seems similar to that of PSR B1509-58, but with a lower significance. Using the about 10 years of data span, we also studied the real time evolution of the spectra of these pulsars, and no significant evolution has been detected. We have discussed about the constraints of these results on theoretical models of pulsar X-ray emission.

Observation of electron-antineutrino disappearance at Daya Bay

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured a non-zero value for the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. Antineutrinos from six 2.9 GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baseline 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. With a 43,000 ton-GW_{\rm th}-day livetime exposure in 55 days, 10416 (80376) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to expected number of antineutrinos at the far hall is $R=0.940\pm 0.011({\rm stat}) \pm 0.004({\rm syst})$. A rate-only analysis finds $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.092\pm 0.016({\rm stat})\pm0.005({\rm syst})$ in a three-neutrino framework.

Quark and Glue Momenta and Angular Momenta in the Proton --- a Lattice Calculation

We report a complete calculation of the quark and glue momenta and angular momenta in the proton. These include the quark contributions from both the connected and disconnected insertions. The calculation is carried out on a $16^3 \times 24$ quenched lattice at $β= 6.0$ and for Wilson fermions with $κ= 0.154, 0.155,$ and 0.1555 which correspond to pion masses at 650, 538, and 478 MeV. The quark loops are calculated with $Z_4$ noise and signal-to-noise is improved further with unbiased subtractions. The glue operator is comprised of gauge-field tensors constructed from the overlap operator. The $u$ and $d$ quark momentum/angular momentum fraction is 0.66(5)/0.72(5), the strange momentum/angular momentum fraction is 0.024(6)/0.023(7), and that of the glue is 0.31(6)/0.25(8). The orbital angular momenta of the quarks are obtained from subtracting the angular momentum component from its corresponding spin. As a result, the quark orbital angular momentum constitutes 0.50(2) of the proton spin, with almost all it coming from the disconnected insertion. The quark spin carries a fraction 0.25(12) and glue carries a fraction 0.25(8) of the total proton spin.

First observation of $η(1405)$ decays into $f_{0}(980)π^0$

The decays $J/ψ\rightarrow γπ^+π^-π^0$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow γπ^0π^0π^0$ are analyzed using a sample of 225 million $\jpsi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay of $η(1405)\ar f_{0}(980)π^0$ with a large isospin violation is observed for the first time. The width of the $f_{0}(980)$ observed in the dipion mass spectra is anomalously narrower than the world average. Decay rates for three-pion decays of the $η'$ are also measured precisely.
