Physics development of web-based tools for use in hardware clusters doing lattice physics

Jefferson Lab and MIT are developing a set of web-based tools within the Lattice Hadron Physics Collaboration to allow lattice QCD theorists to treat the computational facilities located at the two sites as a single meta-facility. The prototype Lattice Portal provides researchers the ability to submit jobs to the cluster, browse data caches, and transfer files between cache and off-line storage. The user can view the configuration of the PBS servers and to monitor both the status of all batch queues as well as the jobs in each queue. Work is starting on expanding the present system to include job submissions at the meta-facility level (shared queue), as well as multi-site file transfers and enhanced policy-based data management capabilities.

The New Emerging Model for the Structure of Cooling Cores in Clusters of Galaxies

New X-ray observations with XMM-Newton show a lack of spectral evidence for large amounts of cooling and condensing gas in the centers of galaxy clusters believed to harbour strong cooling flows. The paper reexplores the cooling flow scenario in the light of the new observations. We explore the diagnostics of the temperature structure of cooling cores with XMM-spectroscopy, tests for intracluster X-ray absorption towards central AGN, the effect of metal abundance inhomogeneities, and the implications of high resolution images in the centers of clusters. We find no evidence of intrinsic absorption in the center of the cooling flows of M87 and the Perseus cluster. We further consider the effect of cluster rotation in cooling flow regions in the frame of cosmic structure evolution models. Also the heating of the core regions of clusters by jets from a central AGN is reconsidered. We find that the power of the AGN jets as estimated by their interaction effects with the intracluster medium in several examples is more then sufficient to heat the cooling flows and to reduce the mass deposition rates. We explore in more detail which requirements such a heating model has to fulfill to be consistent with all observations, point out the way such a model could be constructed, and argue that such model building seems to be successful. In summary it is argued that most observational evidence points towards much lower mass deposition rates than previously inferred in the central region of clusters thought to contain strong cooling flows.

Frustrated 3-Dimensional Quantum Spin Liquid in CuHpCl

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are reported for the quantum antiferromagnetic material Cu_2(C_5H_12N_2)_2Cl_4 (CuHpCl). The magnetic excitation spectrum forms a band extending from 0.9 meV to 1.4 meV. The spectrum contains two modes that disperse throughout the a-c plane of the monoclinic unit cell with less dispersion along the unique b-axis. Simple arguments based on the measured dispersion relations and the crystal structure show that a spin ladder model is inappropriate for describing CuHpCl. Instead, it is proposed that hydrogen bond mediated exchange interactions between the bi-nuclear molecular units yield a three-dimensional interacting spin system with a recurrent triangular motif similar to the Shastry-Sutherland Model (SSM). Model independent analysis based on the first moment sum rule shows that at least four distinct spin pairs are strongly correlated and that two of these, including the dimer bond of the corresponding SSM, are magnetically frustrated. These results show that CuHpCl should be classified as a frustration induced three dimensional quantum spin liquid.

Subtraction method for NLO corrections in Monte-Carlo event generators for Z boson production

We use a subtraction method to construct NLO corrections in a Monte-Carlo event generator for the case of vector boson production in Drell-Yan processes. Our calculations are carried out both for the Bengtsson-Sjostrand-van Zijl (BSZ) algorithm and for a modified algorithm proposed by Collins. In the case of the modified algorithm, we compute the relation between the parton distribution functions and the ones in the MSbar scheme; this relation is the same as the corresponding relation for DIS. For the BSZ algorithm, we show that there is no simple relation.

Semiconducting Characteristics of Magnesium-Doped Al2O3 Single Crystals

DC and AC electrical measurements were performed to investigate the electrical conductivity of alpha-Al2O3:Mg samples with different concentrations of [Mg]^0 centers .The concentration of [Mg]^0 centers was monitored by the opticalabsorption peak at 2.56 eV. At low electrical fields, DC measurements reveal blocking contacts. Steady electroluminescence is emitted at the negative electrodeindicating that the majority of carriers are holes. Low voltage AC measurements show that the equivalent circuit for the sample is the bulk resistance in series with the junction capacitance connected in parallel with a capacitance, which represents the dielectric constant of the sample. The values determined for the bulk resistance in both DC and AC experiments are in good agreement. The electrical conductivity of Al2O3:Mg crystals increases linearly with the concentration of [Mg]^0 centers, regardless of the amount of other impurities also present in the crystals, and is four times higher in the $c_{\perpendicular}$ than in the $c_{\parallel}$ direction. The conductivity is thermally activated with an activation energy of 0.68 eV, which is independent of: 1) the [Mg]^0 content, 2) the crystallographic orientation, and 3) the concentration of other impurities. These results favor the {\it small-polaron-motion} mechanism.

Field-induced 3- and 2-dimensional freezing in a quantum spin liquid

Field-induced commensurate transverse magnetic ordering is observed in the Haldane-gap compound \nd by means of neutron diffraction. Depending on the direction of applied field, the high-field phase is shown to be either a 3-dimensional ordered Néel state or a short-range ordered state with dominant 2-dimensional spin correlations. The structure of the high-field phase is determined, and properties of the observed quantum phase transition are discussed.

The short-time critical behaviour of the Ginzburg-Landau model with long-range interaction

The renormalisation group approach is applied to the study of the short-time critical behaviour of the $d$-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model with long-range interaction of the form $p^σ s_{p}s_{-p}$ in momentum space. Firstly the system is quenched from a high temperature to the critical temperature and then relaxes to equilibrium within the model A dynamics. The asymptotic scaling laws and the initial slip exponents $θ^{\prime}$ and $θ$ of the order parameter and the response function respectively, are calculated to the second order in $ε=2σ-d$.

Two-magnon states in Cu(NO3)2*2.5D2O using inelastic neutron scattering

We report measurements of the two-magnon states in a dimerized antiferromagnetic chain material, copper nitrate (\QTR{group}{Cu(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}\cdot 2.5$D$_{2}$O}). Using inelastic neutron scattering, we have studied the one- and two-magnon excitation spectra in a large single crystal of this material. We compare this new data with perturbative expansions of the alternating Heisenberg chain and find good agreement with these calculations. The data may also show evidence for the recently proposed S=1 two-magnon bound state (Phys. Rev. B54, R9624 (1996)).

Electrical Conductivity in Magnesium-Doped Al_2 O_3 Crystal at Moderate Temperatures

AC and DC electrical measurements between 273 and 800 K were used to characterize the electrical conductivity of Al_2 O_3:Mg single crystals containing [Mg]^{0} center. At low fields contacts are blocking. At high fields, electrical current flows steadily through the sample and the I-V characteristic corresponds to a directly biased barrier whit a series resistance (bulk resistance). AC measurements yield values for the junction capacitance as well as for the sample resistance, and provide perfectly reproducible conductivity values. The conductivity varies linearly whit the [Mg]^{0} concentration and a thermal activation energy of 0.68 eV was obtained, which agrees very well with the activation energy previously reported for motion of free holes.

Haldane-gap excitations in the low-H_c 1-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet NDMAP

Inelastic neutron scattering on deuterated single-crystal samples is used to study Haldane-gap excitations in the new S=1 one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet NDMAP, that was recently recognized as an ideal model system for high-field studies. The Haldane gap energies $Δ_x=0.42$ meV, $Δ_y=0.52$ meV and $Δ_z=1.86$ meV, for excitations polarized along the a, b, and c crystallographic axes, respectively, are directly measured. The dispersion perpendicular to the chain axis c is studied, and extremely weak inter-chain coupling constants $J_y=1.8\cdot 10^{-3}$ meV and $J_x=3.5\cdot 10^{-4}$ meV, along the a and b axes, respectively, are determined. The results are discussed in the context of future experiments in high magnetic fields.

Pair Correlation Function of Wilson Loops

We give a path integral prescription for the pair correlation function of Wilson loops lying in the worldvolume of Dbranes in the bosonic open and closed string theory. The results can be applied both in ordinary flat spacetime in the critical dimension d or in the presence of a generic background for the Liouville field. We compute the potential between heavy nonrelativistic sources in an abelian gauge theory in relative collinear motion with velocity v = tanh(u), probing length scales down to r_min^2 = 2 πα' u. We predict a universal -(d-2)/r static interaction at short distances. We show that the velocity dependent corrections to the short distance potential in the bosonic string take the form of an infinite power series in the dimensionless variables z = r_min^2/r^2, uz/π, and u^2.

The FIR-Radio Correlation of Wolf-Rayet Galaxies and the Role of Star Formation in LINERs

We find that a preliminary classification of LINERs' energetics may be made in terms of the FIR-radio correlation of Wolf-Rayet galaxies. The AGN- or starburst-supported LINERs can be distinguished by their FIR-to-radio ratio, $Q\equiv L(1.4{\rm GHz})/$ $L(60μ{\rm m})>$ or $<0.01$. It is interesting to note that almost all the LINERs with inner rings might be starburst- supported, indicating reduced AGN activities compared with those of the AGN-supported ones. We also find that a shock-heating phase for the warm dust component might be important for some starbursts at the burst age of $\ge 10^{7}$ yr, with $Q<0.001$.

Role of Starbursts in LINERs

We report our preliminary results on the role of starbursts in LINERs by use of WR galaxies as a tool. The essence of this approach lies in the different FIR-radio relation of WR galaxies from the pure AGN's.

Evidence for Gamma-ray Bursts Originating Within 11 Mpc

We investigate the number of gamma-ray bursts in two particular strips of the sky using the data in 3B catalog of Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE). One stripe is related to the plane in which the intergalactic globular clusters (R>25kpc) and Galactic satellite galaxies (45kpc<R<280kpc) concentrate, the other is concerned to nearby galaxies (1Mpc<R<11Mpc). We find that the density of GRBs in these two strips is higher than that in other parts of the sky with significance 2.8 and 1.9σrespectively. We also compare the peak flux distribution of GRBs in these two stripes with that in other parts of the sky, and find no difference in the former stripe but a difference in the latter with a significant level α=0.05. This is consistent with the distance scales of these two planes. So it suggests that at least a substantial fraction of GRBs may be related to those objects in these two planes and thus originate within 11 Mpc.

Prandtl number of lattice Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook fluid

The lattice Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook modeled fluid has an unchangeable unit Prandtl number. A simple method is introduced in this letter to formulate a flexible Prandtl number for the modeled fluid. The effectiveness was demonstrated by numerical simulations of the Couette flow.

Heat Transfer in Lattice BGK Modeled Fluid

The thermal lattice BGK model is a recently suggested numerical tool which aims to simulate thermohydrodynamic problems. We investigate the quality of the lattice BGK simulation by calculating the temperature profiles in the Couette flow under different Eckert and Mach numbers. A revised lower order model is proposed and the higher order model is proved once again to be advantageous.
