Scaling relations in charge and spin excitations for (La,Sr)MnO3

Scaling relations in the charge and spin excitations of (La,Sr)MnO3 are studied from both theoretical and experimental points of view. In the ferromagnetic metal phase, we investigate optical conductivity and neutron inelastic scattering, and compare with a theoretical calculation based on the dynamical mean-field theory of the double-exchange hamiltonian. Spin and charge dynamics of (La,Sr)MnO3 exhibit typical behaviors of half metals. In these manganite compounds with high Curie temperature, various behaviors in spin and charge properties are explained by the double-exchange hamiltonian alone. Magnetoresistance of these compounds as well as other compounds with lower Curie temperature are also discussed.

Reduction of ordered moment and Neel temperature of quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnets Sr2CuO3 and Ca2CuO3

We report elastic neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements of the quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnets Sr2CuO3 and Ca2CuO3, which have extraordinarily reduced TN/J ratios. We observe almost resolution-limited antiferromagnetic Bragg reflections in Sr2CuO3 and obtain a reduced ordered moment size of ~0.06 \muB. We find that the ratio of ordered moment size μ(Ca2CuO3)/μ(Sr2CuO3)=1.5(1) roughly scales with their Neel temperatures, which suggests that the ordered moment size of quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnets decreases continuously in the limit of vanishing inter-chain interactions.

Magnetism and Structural Distortion in the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 Metallic Ferromagnet

Neutron scattering studies on a single crystal of the highly-correlated electron system, La1-xSrxMnO3 with x~0.3, have been carried out elucidating both the spin and lattice dynamics of this metallic ferromagnet. We report a large measured value of the spin wave stiffness constant, which directly shows that the electron transfer energy of the d band is large. The spin dynamics, including magnetic critical scattering, demonstrate that this material behaves similar to other typical metallic ferromagnets such as Fe or Ni. The crystal structure is rhombohedral, as previously reported, for all temperatures studied (below ~425K). We have observed new superlattice peaks which show that the primary rhombohedral lattice distortion arises from oxygen octahedra rotations resulting in an R-3c structure. The superlattice reflection intensities which are very sensitive to structural changes are independent of temperature demonstrating that there is no primary lattice distortion anomaly at the magnetic transition temperature, Tc = 378.1 K, however there is a lattice contraction.

Intercalation and Staging Behavior in Super-Oxygenated $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$

A high temperature electrochemical oxidation process has been used to produce large single crystals of $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ suitable for neutron scattering experiments. Below room temperature the oxygen-rich phases have structural superlattice scattering peaks which indicate new periodicities ranging from 2 to 6.6 layers perpendicular to the copper oxide planes. A model structure originally proposed for $La_2NiO_{4 + δ}$ can account for the superlattice peaks as a result of anti-phase domain boundaries between different tilt directions of the CuO$_6$ octahedra. Within this model, the changes in CuO$_6$ tilt directions are induced by segregated layers of interstitial oxygen which order in a manner similar to intercalants in graphite. This structural model thus clarifies previous work and establishes $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ as a unique lamellar superconducting system with annealed disorder.
