Observation of $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ and $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$

Using a sample of $1.3\times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ and $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$. The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}$($η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$) = $(8.53\pm0.69({\rm stat.})\pm0.64({\rm syst.}))\times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}$($η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$) = $(1.82\pm0.35({\rm stat.})\pm0.18({\rm syst.}))\times10^{-4}$, which are consistent with theoretical predictions based on a combination of chiral perturbation theory and vector-meson dominance.

Search for the rare decays $J/ψ\to D_s^-ρ^+$ and $J/ψ\to \overline{D}{}^0\overline{K}{}^{\ast0}$

A search for the rare decays of $J/ψ\to D_s^-ρ^+ + c.c.$ and $J/ψ\to \overline{D}{}^0\overline{K}{}^{\ast0} + c.c.$ is performed with a data sample of 225.3 million $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector. No evident signal is observed. Upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to D_s^-ρ^+ + c.c.) < 1.3 \times 10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to \overline{D}{}^0\overline{K}{}^{\ast0} + c.c.) < 2.5 \times 10^{-6}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level.

Amplitude Analysis of the $D^+ \to K^0_S π^+ π^0$ Dalitz Plot

We perform an analysis of the $D^+ \to K^0_S π^+ π^0$ Dalitz plot using a data set of 2.92 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $ψ(3770)$ mass accumulated by the BESIII Experiment, in which 166694 candidate events are selected with a background of 15.1%. The Dalitz plot is found to be well-represented by a combination of six quasi-two-body decay channels ($K^0_Sρ^+$, $K^0_Sρ(1450)^+$, $\overline{K}^{*0}π^+$, $\overline{K}_0(1430)^0π^+$, $\overline{K}(1680)^0π^+$, $\overlineκ^0π^+$) plus a small non-resonant component. Using the fit fractions from this analysis, partial branching ratios are updated with higher precision than previous measurements.

Observation of $e^{+} e^{-} \to γX(3872)$ at BESIII

With data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies from 4.009 to 4.420 GeV, the process $e^{+} e^{-} \to γX(3872)$ is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of $6.3σ$. The measured mass of the $X(3872)$ is ($3871.9\pm 0.7_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.2_{\rm sys.}$) MeV/$c^2$, in agreement with previous measurements. Measurements of the product of the cross section $σ[e^{+} e^{-} \to γX(3872)]$ and the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}[X(3872) \to π^{+} π^{-} J/ψ]$ at center-of-mass energies 4.009, 4.229, 4.260, and 4.360 GeV are reported. Our measurements are consistent with expectations for the radiative transition process $Y(4260) \to γX(3872)$.

Observation of the decay $ψ(3686)$ $\rightarrow$ $Λ\barΣ^{\pm}π^{\mp}+c.c.$

Using a sample of $1.06\times10^{8}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present the first observation of the decays of $ψ(3686)$ $\rightarrow$ $Λ\barΣ^{+}π^{-}+c.c.$ and $ψ(3686)$ $\rightarrow$ $Λ\barΣ^{-}π^{+}+c.c.$. The branching fractions are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \rightarrow Λ\barΣ^{+}π^{-} + c.c.)=(1.40\pm 0.03 \pm 0.13)\times10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \rightarrow Λ\barΣ^{-}π^{+}+c.c.)=(1.54\pm 0.04 \pm 0.13)\times10^{-4}$, where the first errors are statistical and the second ones systematic.

Transverse self-modulation of ultra-relativistic lepton beams in the plasma wakefield accelerator

The transverse self-modulation of ultra-relativistic, long lepton bunches in high-density plasmas is explored through full-scale particle-in-cell simulations. We demonstrate that long SLAC-type electron and positron bunches can become strongly self-modulated over centimeter distances, leading to wake excitation in the blowout regime with accelerating fields in excess of 20 GV/m. We show that particles energy variations exceeding 10 GeV can occur in meter-long plasmas. We find that the self-modulation of positively and negatively charged bunches differ when the blowout is reached. Seeding the self-modulation instability suppresses the competing hosing instability. This work reveals that a proof-of-principle experiment to test the physics of bunch self-modulation can be performed with available lepton bunches and with existing experimental apparatus and diagnostics.

Normalizing Weak Boson Pair Production at the Large Hadron Collider

The production of two weak bosons at the Large Hadron Collider will be one of the most important sources of SM backgrounds for final states with multiple leptons. In this paper we consider several quantities that can help normalize the production of weak boson pairs. Ratios of inclusive cross-sections for production of two weak bosons and Drell-Yan are investigated and the corresponding theoretical errors are evaluated. The possibility of predicting the jet veto survival probability of VV production from Drell-Yan data is also considered. Overall, the theoretical errors on all quantities remain less than 5-20%. The dependence of these quantities on the center of mass energy of the proton-proton collision is also studied.

Scattering of plasmons at the intersection of two metallic nanotubes: Implications for tunnelling

We study theoretically the plasmon scattering at the intersection of two metallic carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that for a small angle of crossing, $θ\ll 1$, the transmission coefficient is an oscillatory function of $λ/θ$, where $λ$ is the interaction parameter of the Luttinger liquid in an individual nanotube. We calculate the tunnel density of states, $ν(ω,x)$, as a function of energy, $ω$, and distance, $x$, from the intersection. In contrast to a single nanotube, we find that, in the geometry of crossed nanotubes, conventional "rapid" oscillations in $ν(ω,x)$ due to the plasmon scattering acquire an aperiodic "slow-breathing" envelope which has $λ/θ$ nodes.

Spin states of the first four holes in a silicon nanowire quantum dot

We report measurements on a silicon nanowire quantum dot with a clarity that allows for a complete understanding of the spin states of the first four holes. First, we show control of the hole number down to one. Detailed measurements at perpendicular magnetic fields reveal the Zeeman splitting of a single hole in silicon. We are able to determine the ground-state spin configuration for one to four holes occupying the quantum dot and find a spin filling with alternating spin-down and spin-up holes, which is confirmed by magnetospectroscopy up to 9T. Additionally, a so far inexplicable feature in single-charge quantum dots in many materials systems is analyzed in detail. We observe excitations of the zero-hole ground-state energy of the quantum dot, which cannot correspond to electronic or Zeeman states. We show that the most likely explanation is acoustic phonon emission to a cavity between the two contacts to the nanowire.
