Gate-controlled suppression of light-driven proton transport through graphene electrodes

Recent experiments demonstrated that proton transport through graphene electrodes can be accelerated by over an order of magnitude with low intensity illumination. Here we show that this photo-effect can be suppressed for a tuneable fraction of the infrared spectrum by applying a voltage bias. Using photocurrent measurements and Raman spectroscopy, we show that such fraction can be selected by tuning the Fermi energy of electrons in graphene with a bias, a phenomenon controlled by Pauli blocking of photo-excited electrons. These findings demonstrate a dependence between graphene's electronic and proton transport properties and provide fundamental insights into molecularly thin electrode-electrolyte interfaces and their interaction with light.

Magnetic phase diagrams and large magnetocaloric effects of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic triangular lattice of Gd$^{3+}$ ions in KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$

We report a detailed study of the magnetic properties of KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$, in which magnetic Gd$^{3+}$ ($S=7/2$) ions form into two-dimensional triangular layers. Magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurements have been performed on KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ single crystals. The results show that a long-range antiferromagnetic state is established below $T_{\rm N}=0.24$ K. In zero fields, only about half of the full entropy is released at $T_{\rm N}$, indicating that not all the magnetic moments are frozen below the ordering temperature, as expected from the geometrical frustration of the triangular spin lattice. Further studies under external fields were performed down to 50 mK, and the magnetic phase diagrams are established with magnetic fields applied both within and perpendicular to the triangular plane. KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ serves as an example of a two-dimensional triangular lattice with large spin values ($S=7/2$) and can be directly compared with the iso-structure KBaR(BO$_3$)$_2$ (R = Dy-Yb) family of doublet ground states, which exhibit effective spins of $S=1/2$.

Antiferromagnetism and Ising Ground States in the Rare-earth Garnet Nd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$

In this paper, we investigate the low temperature magnetic properties of the rare-earth garnet compound Nd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ in detail by means of magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect measurements. The magnetic thermal properties along with the crystal field calculations reveal that the Nd$^{3+}$ ions form into a frustrated hyper-kagome lattice with connected triangles have an Ising-like ground state with the easy axis along the local [100], [010] and [001] directions. Instead of a quantum spin liquid ground state, an antiferromagnetically ordered state is found below $T_{\mathrm{N}}=0.52~\rm K$. With applying field in the [111] direction, the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed at the critical field of $B_{\mathrm{c}}=0.75~\rm T$, and enhancement of the critical fluctuations with linear crossover behaviors is observed near the critical point.

Successive magnetic orderings in the Ising spin chain magnet DyNi$_5$Ge$_3$

In this report, we investigated a new rare earth based one-dimensional Ising spin chain magnet~\DNG~by means of magnetization, specific heat and powder neutron diffraction measurements. Due to the crystalline electrical field splitting, the magnetic Dy ions share an Ising like ground doublet state. Owning to the local point symmetry, these Ising moments form into two canted magnetic sublattices, which were further confirmed by the angle-dependent magnetization measurement. In zero fields, two successive antiferromagnetic phase transitions were found at temperatures $T_{\mathrm{N1}}=6~\rm K$ and $T_{\mathrm{N2}}=5~\rm K$, respectively. Only part of the moments are statically ordered in this intermediate state between $T_{\mathrm{N1}}$ and $T_{\mathrm{N2}}$. Powder neutron diffraction experiments at different temperatures were performed as well. An incommensurate magnetic propagation vector of $\mathbf{k_{\rm m}}=(0.5,0.4,0.5)$ was identified. The refined spin configurations through the irreducible representation analysis confirmed that these Ising spins are canted in the crystal $ab$~plane.

Interplay of itinerant electrons and Ising moments in a hybrid honeycomb quantum magnet TmNi$_3$Al$_9$

The interplay between itinerant electrons and local magnetic moments in quantum materials brings about rich and fascinating phenomena and stimulates various developments in the theoretical framework. In this work, thermodynamic, electric transport, and neutron diffraction measurements were performed on a newly synthesized honeycomb lattice magnet TmNi$_3$Al$_9$. Based on the experimental data, a magnetic field temperature phase diagram was constructed, exhibiting three essentially different magnetic regions. Below ${T_{\rm N}=2.97 \pm 0.02}\ \rm K$ Tm$^{3+}$ moments order antiferromagnetically in zero field. We found that the Tm$^{3+}$ ions form a pseudo-doublet ground state with the Ising-like moments lying normal to the two-dimensional honeycomb layers. Application of a magnetic field along the easy axis gradually suppresses the antiferromagnetic order in favor of an induced ferromagnetic state above the critical field ${B_c=0.92 \pm 0.05}\ \rm T$. In the vicinity of $B_c$, a strong enhancement of the quantum spin fluctuations was observed. The quantum Ising nature of the local moments and the coupling to itinerant electrons are discussed.

Measurement of the $e^{+}e^{-}\toΣ^{0}\barΣ^{0}$ cross sections at center-of-mass energies from $2.3864$ to $3.0200$ GeV

The Born cross sections of $e^{+}e^{-}\to Σ^{0}\barΣ^{0}$ are measured at center-of-mass energies from $2.3864$ to $3.0200$ GeV using data samples with an integrated luminosity of $328.5$ pb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The analysis makes use of a novel reconstruction method for energies near production threshold, while a single-tag method is employed at other center-of-mass energies. The measured cross sections are consistent with earlier results from BaBar, with a substantially improved precision. The cross-section lineshape can be well described by a perturbative QCD-driven energy function. In addition, the effective form factors of the $Σ^{0}$ baryon are determined. The results provide precise experimental input for testing various theoretical predictions.

Measurement of the inclusive branching fraction for $ψ(3686)\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} + \text{anything}$

Using 5.9~pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies from 3.640 to 3.701 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII Collider, we measure the observed cross sections of $e^+e^-\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} X$ (where $X= \text{anything}$). From a fit to these observed cross sections with the sum of continuum and $ψ(3686)$ and $J/ψ$ Breit-Wigner functions and considering initial state radiation and the BEPCII beam energy spread, we obtain for the first time the product of $ψ(3686)$ leptonic width and inclusive decay branching fraction $Γ^{ee}_{ψ(3686)}\mathcal B(ψ(3686)\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} X) = (373.8 \pm 6.7 \pm 20.0)$ eV, and assuming $Γ^{ee}_{ψ(3686)}$ is $(2.33 \pm 0.04)$ keV from PDG value, we measure $\mathcal B(ψ(3686)\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} X) = (16.04 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.90)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of $D_{s}^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}$

We report an amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of $D_{s}^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}$ decay using a data sample of 3.19 $\rm fb^{-1}$ recorded with BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.178 GeV. We perform a model-independent partial wave analysis in the low $K^{+}K^{-}$ mass region to determine the $K^{+}K^{-}$ S-wave lineshape, followed by an amplitude analysis of our very pure high-statistics sample. The amplitude analysis provides an accurate determination of the detection efficiency allowing us to measure the branching fraction ${\cal B}(D_{s}^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}) = (5.47\pm0.08_{\rm stat}\pm0.13_{\rm sys})\%$.

Cross section measurement of $e^{+}e^{-} \to K_{S}^{0}K_{L}^{0}$ at $\sqrt{s}=2.00-3.08~{\rm GeV}$

The cross sections of the process $e^{+}e^{-} \to K_{S}^{0}K_{L}^{0}$ are measured at fifteen center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ from $2.00$ to $3.08~{\rm GeV}$ with the BESIII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPCII). The results are found to be consistent with those obtained by BaBar. A resonant structure around $2.2~{\rm GeV}$ is observed, with a mass and width of $2273.7 \pm 5.7 \pm 19.3~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ and $86 \pm 44 \pm 51~{\rm MeV}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The product of its radiative width ($Γ_{e^+e^-}$) with its branching fraction to $K_{S}^{0}K_{L}^{0}$ ($Br_{K_{S}^{0}K_{L}^{0}}$) is $0.9 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.7~{\rm eV}$.

Measurement of the Branching Fraction of and Search for a CP-Violating Asymmetry in $η' \to π^+ π^- e^+ e^-$ at BESIII

The rare decay $η' \to π^+ π^- e^+ e^-$ is studied using a sample of $1.3 \times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII in 2009 and 2012. The branching fraction is measured with improved precision to be $\left( 2.42\pm0.05_{stat.}\pm0.08_{syst.} \right) \times 10^{-3}$. Due to the inclusion of new data, this result supersedes the last BESIII result on this branching fraction. In addition, the CP-violating asymmetry in the angle between the decay planes of the $π^+π^-$-pair and the $e^+e^-$-pair is investigated. A measurable value would indicate physics beyond the standard model; the result is $\mathcal{A}_{CP} = \left(2.9\pm3.7_{stat.}\pm1.1_{syst.} \right)\%$, which is consistent with the standard model expectation of no CP-violation. The precision is comparable to the asymmetry measurement in the $K^0_L\toπ^+π^-e^+e^-$ decay where the observed $(14\pm2)\%$ effect is driven by a standard model mechanism.

Measurement of the absolute branching fraction of $Λ_c^+\to p K^0_{\mathrm{S}}η$ decays

Based on 586 $\rm{pb^{-1}}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=4.6~\rm{GeV}$ with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the absolute branching fraction of $Λ_c^+ \to p K^0_{\mathrm{S}}η$ decays is measured for the first time to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^0_{\mathrm{S}}η) = (0.414 \pm 0.084 \pm 0.028)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The result is compatible with a previous CLEO result on the relative branching fraction $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^0_{\mathrm{S}}η)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^-π^+)}$, and consistent with theoretical predictions of SU(3) flavor symmetry.

Intrinsic Spin Susceptibility and Pseudogap-like Behavior in Infinite-Layer LaNiO2

The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates has stimulated intensive interest, especially for similarities and differences compared to that in cuprate superconductors. In contrast to cuprates, although earlier magnetization measurement reveals a Curie-Weiss-like behavior in undoped infinite-layer nickelates, there is no magnetic ordering observed by elastic neutron scattering down to liquid helium temperature. Until now, the nature of the magnetic ground state in undoped infinite-layer nickelates was still elusive. Here, we perform a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment through 139La nuclei to study the intrinsic spin susceptibility of infinite-layer LaNiO2. First, the signature for magnetic ordering or freezing is absent in the 139La NMR spectrum down to 0.24 K, which unambiguously confirms a paramagnetic ground state in LaNiO2. Second, a pseudogap-like behavior instead of Curie-Weiss-like behavior is observed in both the temperature-dependent Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1), which is widely observed in both underdoped cuprates and iron-based superconductors. Furthermore, the scaling behavior between the Knight shift and 1/T1T has also been discussed. Finally, the present results imply a considerable exchange interaction in infinite-layer nickelates, which sets a strong constraint for the proposed theoretical models.

Determination of the $Λ_c^+$ spin via the reaction $e^+e^-\toΛ_c^+\barΛ_c^-$

We report on a comparison of two possible $Λ_c^+$ spin hypotheses, $J=\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{3}{2}$, via the process $e^+e^-\toΛ_c^+\barΛ_c^-$, using the angular distributions of $Λ_c^+$ decays into $pK_S^0$, $Λπ^+$, $Σ^0π^+$, and $Σ^+π^0$. The data were recorded at $\sqrt s = 4.6$ GeV with the BESIII detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 587 pb$^{-1}$. The $Λ_c^+$ spin is determined to be $J=\frac{1}{2}$, with this value favored over the $\frac{3}{2}$ hypothesis with a significance corresponding to more than 6 Gaussian standard deviations.

Amplitude analysis and branching-fraction measurement of \boldmath $D_{s}^{+} \to K^0_{S}π^{+}π^{0}$

Utilizing a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.32~$\rm fb^{-1}$, recorded by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226~GeV, we perform an amplitude analysis of the decay $D_{s}^{+} \to K_{S}^{0}π^{+}π^{0}$ and determine the relative fractions and phase differences of different intermediate processes, which include $K_{S}^{0}ρ(770)^{+}$, $K_{S}^{0}ρ(1450)^{+}$, $K^{*}(892)^{0}π^{+}$, $K^{*}(892)^{+}π^{0}$, and $K^{*}(1410)^{0}π^{+}$. Using a double-tag technique, and making an efficiency correction that relies on our knowledge of the phase-space distribution of the decays coming from the amplitude analysis, the absolute branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+} \to K_{S}^{0}π^{+}π^{0})=(5.43\pm0.30_{\text{stat}}\pm 0.15_{\text{syst}})\times 10^{-3}$.

Search for the reaction channel $e^+e^- \rightarrow η_cηπ^+π^-$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.23 to 4.60 GeV

Using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, we search for the process $e^+e^-\rightarrow η_cηπ^+π^-$. The search is performed using five large data sets recorded at center-of-mass energies of 4.23, 4.26, 4.36, 4.42, and 4.60 GeV. The $η_c$ meson is reconstructed in 16 exclusive decay modes. No signal is observed in the $η_c$ mass region at any center-of-mass energy. The upper limits on the reaction cross sections are determined to be 6.2, 10.8, 27.6, 22.6 and 23.7 pb at the 90% confidence level at the center-of-mass energies listed above.

Search for the reaction $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow π^{+}π^{-} χ_{cJ}$ and a charmonium-like structure decaying to $χ_{cJ}π^{\pm}$ between 4.18 and 4.60 GeV

We search for the process $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-} χ_{cJ}$ ($J=0,1,2$) and for a charged charmonium-like state in the $π^{\pm} χ_{cJ}$ subsystem. The search uses data sets collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies between 4.18 GeV and 4.60 GeV. No significant $π^{+}π^{-} χ_{cJ}$ signals are observed at any center-of-mass energy, and thus upper limits are provided which also serve as limits for a possible charmonium-like structure in the invariant $π^{\pm} χ_{cJ}$ mass.

Observation of a near-threshold structure in the $K^+$ recoil-mass spectra in $e^+e^-\to K^+ (D_s^- D^{*0} + D^{*-}_s D^0)$

We report a study of the processes of $e^+e^-\to K^+ (D_s^- D^{*0} + D^{*-}_s D^0)$ based on $e^+e^-$ annihilation samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII at five center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.628 to 4.698 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 3.7 fb$^{-1}$. An excess over the known contributions of the conventional charmed mesons is observed near the $D_s^- D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}_s D^0$ mass thresholds in the $K^{+}$ recoil-mass spectrum for events collected at $\sqrt{s}=4.681$ GeV. The structure matches a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, whose pole mass and width are determined as $(3982.5^{+1.8}_{-2.6}\pm2.1)$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(12.8^{+5.3}_{-4.4}\pm3.0)$ MeV, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 $σ$ over the contributions only from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate of the charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into $D_s^- D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}_s D^0$. However, the properties of the excess need further exploration with more statistics.
