Charge-exchange measurements of high-energy fast ions in LHD using negative-ion neutral beam injection

A new sightline geometry for the fast-ion D-alpha (FIDA) diagnostic on the Large Helical Device (LHD) has been confirmed to measure signals for high-energy fast ions produced by negative-ion neutral beam injection. The newly installed sightline uses a 180 keV tangential negative-ion neutral beamline as the active source. Due to the small angle between the beamline and FIDA sightline, the relative velocity between fast ions and injected neutrals is small. This allows for high-energy fast ions just below the beam injection energy to produce measurable Doppler-shifted FIDA emission. Experiments were conducted at LHD in order to compare the new sightline, which views a high-energy negative-ion tangential beamline, and the old sightline, which views a low-energy perpendicular positive-ion neutral beamline. The measured FIDA signal is validated against predictions from the synthetic fast-ion diagnostic code FIDASIM with a distribution function modelled by the 5D transport code GNET. The results of the experiment confirm that reducing the viewing angle with a tangential active beam allows FIDA diagnostic to view high-energy fast ions with a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio.

Measurement of the mesonic decay branch of the $\bar{K}\!N\!N$ quasi-bound state

We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to π\!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $Λ(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We successfully reproduced distributions of the $π\! Y \! N$ invariant mass and momentum transfer for $π\! Y \! N$ using model fitting functions for $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ formation and quasi-free $\bar{K}$ absorption (${\rm QF}_{\bar{K}-{\rm abs}}$) processes. The model can describe the experimental data quite well, and four $\bar{K} \! N \! N \to π\! Y \! N $ cross-sections were obtained. The results indicate that mesonic decay is the dominant decay branch of $\bar{K} \! N \! N$. The results also suggest that $Γ_{πΛN} \sim Γ_{πΣN}$, which indicates that the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=1$ absorption channel, in addition to the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=0$ absorption channel, substantially contribute to the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ decay, making the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ state approximately twice as unstable as $Λ$(1405).

Pole position of $Λ(1405)$ measured in $d(K^-,n)πΣ$ reactions

We measured a set of $π^\pmΣ^\mp$, $π^0Σ^0$, and $π^-Σ^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrowπΣ$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $πΣ$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $Λ(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group.

Recent results and future prospects of kaonic nuclei at J-PARC

$\bar K$-nuclear bound systems, kaonic nuclei, have been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive $\bar K N$ interaction in $I = 0$ channels. Recently, we demonstrated that kaonic nuclei can be produced via in-flight $(K^-,N)$ reactions using the low-momentum DC kaon beam at the J-PARC E15 experiment. We observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $K^-pp$, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K N$ ($Λ(1405)$) to $\bar K NNNN$. In the new experiment approved as J-PARC E80, we will measure the $\bar K NNN$ ($A=3$) system as a first step toward a comprehensive study.

Observation of a $\bar{K}NN$ bound state in the $^3{\rm He} (K^-, Λp)n$ reaction

We have performed an exclusive measurement of the $K^{-}+\! ~^{3}{\rm He} \to Λpn$ reaction at an incident kaon momentum of $1\ {\rm GeV}/c$.In the $Λp$ invariant mass spectrum, a clear peak was observed below the mass threshold of $\bar{K}\!+\!N\!+\!N$, as a signal of the kaonic nuclear bound state, $\bar{K}NN$.The binding energy, decay width, and $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor of this state were observed to be $B_{K} = 42\pm3({\rm stat.})^{+3}_{-4}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, $Γ_{K} = 100\pm7({\rm stat.})^{+19}_{-9}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, and $Q_{K} = 383\pm11({\rm stat.})^{+4}_{-1}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}/c$, respectively. The total production cross-section of $\bar{K}NN$, determined by its $Λp$ decay mode, was $σ^{tot}_{K} \cdot BR_{Λp} = 9.3\pm0.8({\rm stat.})^{+1.4}_{-1.0}({\rm syst.})\ μ{\rm b}$.We estimated the branching ratio of the $\bar{K}NN$ state to the $Λp$ and $Σ^{0}p$ decay modes as $BR_{Λp}/BR_{Σ^{0}p} \sim 1.7$, by assuming that the physical processes leading to the $ΣN\!N$ final states are analogous to those of $Λpn$.

"$\mathbf{{\textit K^-}{\textit p}{\textit p}}$", a ${\overline{K}}$-Meson Nuclear Bound State, Observed in $^{3}{\rm He}({K^-}, Λ p)n$ Reactions

We observed a distinct peak in the $Λp$ invariant mass spectrum of $^{3}{\rm He}(K^-, \, Λp)n$, well below the mass threshold of $m_K + 2 m_p$. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region $q = 350 \sim 650$ MeV/$c$, one can clearly separate the peak from the quasi-free process, $\overline{K}N \rightarrow \overline{K}N$ followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons $\overline{K}NN \rightarrow ΛN $. We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit-Wigner pole position at $B_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 47 \pm 3 \, (stat.) \,^{+3}_{-6} \,(sys.)$ MeV having a width $Γ_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 115 \pm 7 \, (stat.) \,^{+10}_{-9} \,(sys.)$ MeV, and the $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter $Q_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 381 \pm 14 \, (stat.)\,^{+57}_{-0} \,(sys.)$ MeV/$c$, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness -- "$K^-pp$".

Structure near $K^-$+$p$+$p$ threshold in the in-flight $^3$He$(K^-,Λp)n$ reaction

To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to $Λp$, the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)n_{missing}$ reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/$c$. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass $M_X$ of the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)X$ reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the $Λpn$ final state. The observed $Λp n$ events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the $Λp$. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum $χ^2$ method was applied to deduce its mass $M_X\ =$ 2355 $ ^{+ 6}_{ - 8}$ (stat.) $ \pm 12$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, and decay-width $Γ_X\ = $ 110 $ ^{+ 19}_{ - 17}$ (stat.) $ \pm 27$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, respectively. The form factor parameter $Q_X \sim$ 400 MeV/$c$ implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5

Measurement and comparison of individual external doses of high-school students living in Japan, France, Poland and Belarus -- the "D-shuttle" project --

Twelve high schools in Japan (of which six are in Fukushima Prefecture), four in France, eight in Poland and two in Belarus cooperated in the measurement and comparison of individual external doses in 2014. In total 216 high-school students and teachers participated in the study. Each participant wore an electronic personal dosimeter "D-shuttle" for two weeks, and kept a journal of his/her whereabouts and activities. The distributions of annual external doses estimated for each region overlap with each other, demonstrating that the personal external individual doses in locations where residence is currently allowed in Fukushima Prefecture and in Belarus are well within the range of estimated annual doses due to the background radiation level of other regions/countries.

Enhancement of muonium emission rate from silica aerogel with a laser ablated surface

Emission of muonium ($μ^+e^-$) atoms from a laser-processed aerogel surface into vacuum was studied for the first time. Laser ablation was used to create hole-like regions with diameter of about 270$~μ$m in a triangular pattern with hole separation in the range of 300--500$~μ$m. The emission probability for the laser-processed aerogel sample is at least eight times higher than for a uniform one.

Measurement of muonium emission from silica aerogel

Emission of muonium ($μ^{+}e^{-}$) atoms from silica aerogel into vacuum was observed. Characteristics of muonium emission were established from silica aerogel samples with densities in the range from 29 mg cm$^{-3}$ to 178 mg cm$^{-3}$. Spectra of muonium decay times correlated with distances from the aerogel surfaces, which are sensitive to the speed distributions, follow general features expected from a diffusion process, while small deviations from a simple room-temperature thermal diffusion model are identified. The parameters of the diffusion process are deduced from the observed yields.

Coupled Oscillator Model of the Business Cycle with Fluctuating Goods Markets

The sectoral synchronization observed for the Japanese business cycle in the Indices of Industrial Production data is an example of synchronization. The stability of this synchronization under a shock, e.g., fluctuation of supply or demand, is a matter of interest in physics and economics. We consider an economic system made up of industry sectors and goods markets in order to analyze the sectoral synchronization observed for the Japanese business cycle. A coupled oscillator model that exhibits synchronization is developed based on the Kuramoto model with inertia by adding goods markets, and analytic solutions of the stationary state and the coupling strength are obtained. We simulate the effects on synchronization of a sectoral shock for systems with different price elasticities and the coupling strengths. Synchronization is reproduced as an equilibrium solution in a nearest neighbor graph. Analysis of the order parameters shows that the synchronization is stable for a finite elasticity, whereas the synchronization is broken and the oscillators behave like a giant oscillator with a certain frequency additional to the common frequency for zero elasticity.

J-PARC MUSE H-line optimization for the g-2 and MuHFS experiments

Significant deviation of the anomalous magnetic moment value (g-2) observed by the muon g-2 experiment should be confirmed by the other experiment. This value is experimentally determined by frequency difference observed by the g-2/EDM experiment and muon magnetic moment observed by the muonium hyperfine splitting experiment (MuHFS). Both two experiments are planned to be performed at H-line of the J-PARC/MUSE under construction. We optimized the beamline layout for each experiment with G4beamline. For both experiments, statistics is the most important, thus beamline transmission efficiency should be maximized. Especially for the g-2, the purpose of the present effort is to compromise between small beam size and small leakage field. For the MuHFS, it is crucial to minimize leakage field at around final focus position, and to get all stopped muons within good field region of MuHFS magnet. Conceptual design of the several final focusing systems will be presented. contribution (or invited paper) to NUFACT 11, XIIIth International Workshop on Neutrino Factories, Super beams and Beta beams, 1-6 August 2011, CERN and University of Geneva

Temperature dependencies of the energy and time resolution of silicon drift detectors

The response of silicon drift detectors (SDDs), which were mounted together with their preamplifiers inside a vacuum chamber, was studied in a temperature range from 100 K to 200 K. In particular, the energy resolution could be stabilized to about 150 eV at 6 keV between 130 K and 200 K, while the time resolution shows a temperature dependence of T^3 in this temperature range. To keep a variation of the X-ray peak positions within 1 eV, it is necessary to operate the preamplifier within a stability of 1 K around 280 K. A detailed investigation of this temperature influences on SDDs and preamplifiers is presented.

A Paradigm Shift from Production Function to Production Copula: Statistical Description of Production Activity of Firms

Heterogeneity of economic agents is emphasized in a new trend of macroeconomics. Accordingly the new emerging discipline requires one to replace the production function, one of key ideas in the conventional economics, by an alternative which can take an explicit account of distribution of firms' production activities. In this paper we propose a new idea referred to as production copula; a copula is an analytic means for modeling dependence among variables. Such a production copula predicts value added yielded by firms with given capital and labor in a probabilistic way. It is thereby in sharp contrast to the production function where the output of firms is completely deterministic. We demonstrate empirical construction of a production copula using financial data of listed firms in Japan. Analysis of the data shows that there are significant correlations among their capital, labor and value added and confirms that the values added are too widely scattered to be represented by a production function. We employ four models for the production copula, that is, trivariate versions of Frank, Gumbel and survival Clayton and non-exchangeable trivariate Gumbel; the last one works best.

An Analysis of the Japanese Credit Network

An analysis of the Japanese credit market in 2004 between banks and quoted firms is done in this paper using the tools of the networks theory. It can be pointed out that: (i) a backbone of the credit channel emerges, where some links play a crucial role; (ii) big banks privilege long-term contracts; the "minimal spanning trees" (iii) disclose a highly hierarchical backbone, where the central positions are occupied by the largest banks, and emphasize (iv) a strong geographical characterization, while (v) the clusters of firms do not have specific common properties. Moreover, (vi) while larger firms have multiple lending in large, (vii) the demand for credit (long vs. short term debt and multi-credit lines) of firms with similar sizes is very heterogeneous.

Localized $N, Λ, Σ$, and $Ξ$ Single-Particle Potentials in Finite Nuclei Calculated with $SU_6$ Quark-Model Baryon-Baryon Interactions

Localized single-particle potentials for all octet baryons, $N$, $Λ$, $Σ$, and $Ξ$, in finite nuclei, $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, $^{28}$Si, $^{40}$Ca, $^{56}$Fe, and $^{90}$Zr, are calculated using the quark-model baryon-baryon interactions. $G$-matrices evaluated in symmetric nuclear matter in the lowest order Brueckner theory are applied to finite nuclei in local density approximation. Non-local potentials are localized by a zero-momentum Wigner transformation. Empirical single-particle properties of the nucleon and the $Λ$ hyperon in nuclear medium have been known to be explained semi-quantitatively in the LOBT framework. Attention is focused in the present consideration on predictions for the $Σ$ and $Ξ$ hyperons. The unified description for the octet baryon-baryon interactions by the SU$_6$ quark-model enables us to obtain less ambiguous extrapolation to the $S=-1$ and $S=-2$ sectors based on the knowledge in the $NN$ sector than other potential models. The $Σ$ mean field is shown to be weakly attractive at the surface, but turns to be repulsive inside, which is consistent with the experimental evidence. The $Ξ$ hyperon s.p. potential is also attractive at the nuclear surface region, and inside fluctuates around zero. Hence $Ξ$ hypernuclear bound states are unlikely. We also evaluate energy shifts of the $Σ^-$ and $Ξ^-$ atomic levels in $^{28}$Si and $^{56}$Fe, using the calculated s.p. potentials.

P-wave Lambda N - Sigma N coupling and the spin-orbit splitting of 9 Lambda Be

We reexamine the spin-orbit splitting of 9 Lambda Be excited states in terms of the SU_6 quark-model baryon-baryon interaction. The previous folding procedure to generate the Lambda alpha spin-orbit potential from the quark-model Lambda N LS interaction kernel predicted three to five times larger values for Delta E_{ell s}=E_x(3/2^+)-E_x(5/2^+) in the model FSS and fss2. This time, we calculate Lambda alpha LS Born kernel, starting from the LS components of the nuclear-matter G-matrix for the Lambda hyperon. This framework makes it possible to take full account of an important P-wave Lambda N - Sigma N coupling through the antisymmetric LS^{(-)} force involved in the Fermi-Breit interaction. We find that the experimental value, Delta E^{exp}_{ell s}=43 pm 5 keV, is reproduced by the quark-model G-matrix LS interaction with a Fermi-momentum around k_F=1.0 fm^{-1}, when the model FSS is used in the energy-independent renormalized RGM formalism.

n alpha Resonating-Group Calculation with a Quark-Model G-Matrix NN Interaction

We calculate n alpha phase-shifts and scattering observables in the resonating-group method, using the nuclear-matter G-matrix of an SU_6 quark-model NN interaction. The G-matrix is generated in the recent energy-independent procedure of the quark-model NN interaction with the continuous prescription for intermediate spectra, by assuming an appropriate Fermi momentum k_F=1.2 fm^-1. The n alpha RGM interaction kernels are evaluated with explicit treatments of the nonlocality and momentum dependence of partial-wave G-matrix components. The momentum dependence of the G-matrix components is different for each of the nucleon-exchange and interaction types. Without introducing any artificial parameters except for k_F, the central and spin-orbit components of the n alpha Born kernel are found to have reasonable strengths under the assumption of a rigid translationally invariant shell-model wave function of the alpha-cluster. The characteristic behaviors of three different exchange terms, corresponding to knockout, heavy-particle pickup and nucleon-rearrangement processes, are essentially the same between the case of previous local effective NN forces and the case of nonlocal G-matrix NN interactions.
