Searching for further evidence for cloud-cloud collisions in L1188

In order to search for further observational evidence of cloud-cloud collisions in one of the promising candidates, L1188, we carried out observations of multiple molecular lines toward the intersection region of the two nearly orthogonal filamentary molecular clouds in L1188. Based on these observations, we find two parallel filamentary structures, both of which have at least two velocity components being connected with broad bridging features. We also found a spatially complementary distribution between the two molecular clouds, as well as enhanced $^{13}$CO emission and $^{12}$CO self-absorption toward their abutting regions. At the most blueshifted velocities, we unveil a 1~pc-long arc ubiquitously showing $^{12}$CO line wings. We discover two 22 GHz water masers, which are the first maser detections in L1188. An analysis of line ratios at a linear resolution of 0.2 pc suggests that L1188 is characterised by kinetic temperatures of 13--23~K and H$_{2}$ number densities of 10$^{3}$--10$^{3.6}$ cm$^{-3}$. On the basis of previous theoretical predictions and simulations, we suggest that these observational features can be naturally explained by the scenario of a cloud-cloud collision in L1188, although an additional contribution of stellar feedback from low-mass young stellar objects cannot be ruled out.

ALMA view of the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratio in starburst galaxies

We derive molecular-gas-phase $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotope ratios for the central few 100 pc of the three nearby starburst galaxies NGC 253, NGC 1068, and NGC 4945 making use of the $λ$ $\sim$ 3 mm $^{12}$CN and $^{13}$CN $N$ = 1--0 lines in the ALMA Band 3. The $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratios derived from the ratios of these lines range from 30 to 67 with an average of 41.6 $\pm$ 0.2 in NGC 253, from 24 to 62 with an average of 38.3 $\pm$ 0.4 in NGC 1068, and from 6 to 44 with an average of 16.9 $\pm$ 0.3 in NGC 4945. The highest $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratios are determined in some of the outskirts of the nuclear regions of the three starburst galaxies. The lowest ratios are associated with the northeastern and southwestern molecular peaks of NGC 253, the northeastern and southwestern edge of the mapped region in NGC 1068, and the very center of NGC 4945. In case of NGC 1068, the measured ratios suggest inflow from the outer part of NGC 1068 into the circum-nuclear disk through both the halo and the bar. Low $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratios in the central regions of these starburst galaxies indicate the presence of highly processed material.

GLOSTAR -- Radio Source Catalog I: $28^{\circ}< \textit{l} < 36^{\circ}$ and $|b| < 1^{\circ}$

The GLOSTAR survey will study the star formation in the Galactic plane between $-2^{\circ}< \textit{l}< 85^{\circ}$ and $|b| < 1^{\circ}$ with unprecedented sensitivity in both, flux density ($\sim$ 40 $μJy$ beam$^{-1}$) and range of angular scales ($\sim$ 1."5 to the largest radio structures in the Galaxy). In this paper we present the first results obtained from a radio continuum map of a 16 square degree sized region of the Galactic plane centered on $\textit{l} = 32^{\circ}$ and $b = 0^{\circ}$ ($28^{\circ} < \textit{l} < 36^{\circ}$ and $|b| < 1^{\circ}$). This map has a resolution of 18" and sensitivity of $\sim$ 60-150 $μJy$ beam$^{-1}$. We present data acquired with the VLA in D-configuration. Two 1 GHz wide sub-bands were observed simultaneously and centred at 4.7 and 6.9 GHz. These data were calibrated and imaged using the $\textit{Obit}$ software package. The source extraction has been performed using the BLOBCAT software package and verified through a combination of visual inspection and cross-matching with other radio and mid-infrared surveys. The final catalog consists of 1575 discrete radio sources and 27 large scale structures (including W43 and W44). By cross-matching with other catalogs and calculating the spectral indices ($S(ν) \propto ν^α$), we have classified 231 continuum sources as HII regions, 37 as ionization fronts, and 46 as planetary nebulae. The longitude and latitude distribution and negative spectral indices are all consistent with the vast majority of the unclassified sources being extragalactic background sources. We present a catalog of 1575 radio continuum sources and discuss their physical properties, emission nature and relation with previously reported. These first GLOSTAR results have increased the number of reliable HII regions in this part of the Galaxy by a factor of four.

The Serpens filament: at the onset of slightly supercritical collapse

The Serpens filament, as one of the nearest infrared dark clouds, is regarded as a pristine filament at a very early evolutionary stage of star formation. In order to study its molecular content and dynamical state, we mapped this filament in seven species. Among them, HCO$^{+}$, HNC, HCN, and CS show self-absorption, while C$^{18}$O is most sensitive to the filamentary structure. A kinematic analysis demonstrates that this filament forms a velocity-coherent (trans-)sonic structure, a large part of which is one of the most quiescent regions in the Serpens cloud. Widespread C$^{18}$O depletion is found throughout the Serpens filament. Based on the Herschel dust-derived H$_{2}$ column density map, the line mass of the filament is 36--41~M$_{\odot}$~pc$^{-1}$, and its full width at half maximum is 0.17$\pm$0.01~pc, while its length is ~1.6~pc. The inner radial column density profile of this filament can be well fitted with a Plummer profile with an exponent of 2.2$\pm$0.1, a scale radius of $0.018\pm 0.003$ pc, and a central density of $(4.0\pm 0.8)\times 10^{4}$~cm$^{-3}$. The Serpens filament appears to be slightly supercritical. The widespread blue-skewed HNC and CS line profiles and HCN hyperfine line anomalies across this filament indicate radial infall in parts of the Serpens filament. C$^{18}$O velocity gradients also indicate accretion flows along the filament. The velocity and density structures suggest that such accretion flows are likely due to a longitudinal collapse parallel to the filament's long axis. Both the radial infall rate and the longitudinal accretion rate along the Serpens filament are lower than all previously reported values in other filaments. This indicates that the Serpens filament lies at an early evolutionary stage when collapse has just begun, or that thermal and non-thermal support are effective in providing support against gravity.

Molecular line emission in NGC 4945, imaged with ALMA

NGC 4945 is one of the nearest (~3.8 Mpc; 1" ~ 19 pc) starburst galaxies. ALMA band 3 (3--4\,mm) observations of HCN, HCO+, CS, C3H2, SiO, HCO, and CH3C2H were carried out with ~2" resolution. The lines reveal a rotating nuclear disk of projected size 10" x 2" with position angle ~45 deg, inclination ~75 deg and an unresolved bright central core of size <2.5". The continuum source (mostly free-free radiation) is more compact than the nuclear disk by a linear factor of two but shows the same position angle and is centered 0.39" +_ 0.14" northeast of the nuclear accretion disk defined by H2O maser emission. Outside the nuclear disk, both HCN and CS delineate molecular arms on opposite sides of the dynamical center. These are connected by a (deprojected) 0.6 kpc sized molecular bridge, likely a dense gaseous bar seen almost ends-on, shifting gas from the front and back side into the nuclear disk. Modeling this nuclear disk located farther inside <100 pc) with tilted rings indicates a coplanar outflow reaching a characteristic deprojectd velocity of ~50 km/s. All our molecular lines, with the notable exception of CH3C2H, show significant absorption near the systemic velocity (~571 km/s), within a range of ~500-660 km/s. Apparently, only molecular transitions with low critical H2-density do not show absorption. The velocity field of the nuclear disk, derived from CH3C2H, provides evidence for rigid rotation in the inner few arcseconds and a dynamical mass of M = (2.1+_0.2) x 10^8 Mo inside a galactocentric radius of 2.45", with a significantly flattened rotation curve farther out. Velocity integrated line intensity maps with most pronounced absorption show molecular peak positions up to 1.5" southwest of the continuum peak, presumably due to absorption, which appears to be most severe slightly northeast of the nuclear maser disk.

Kinetic temperature of massive star-forming molecular clumps measured with formaldehyde. III. The Orion Molecular Cloud 1

We mapped the kinetic temperature structure of the Orion molecular cloud 1 with para-H2CO(303-202, 322-221, and 321-220) using the APEX 12m telescope. This is compared with the temperatures derived from the ratio of the NH3(2,2)/(1,1) inversion lines and the dust emission. Using the RADEX non-LTE model, we derive the gas kinetic temperature modeling the measured averaged line ratios of para-H2CO 322-221/303-202 and 321-220/303-202. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from the para-H2CO line ratios are warm, ranging from 30 to >200 K with an average of 62 K at a spatial density of 10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$. These temperatures are higher than those obtained from NH3(2,2)/(1,1) and CH3CCH(6-5) in the OMC-1 region. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from para-H2CO agree with those obtained from warm dust components measured in the mid infrared (MIR), which indicates that the para-H2CO(3-2) ratios trace dense and warm gas. The cold dust components measured in the far infrared (FIR) are consistent with those measured with NH3(2,2)/(1,1) and the CH3CCH(6-5) line series. With dust at MIR wavelengths and para-H2CO(3-2) on one side and dust at FIR wavelengths, NH3(2,2)/(1,1), and CH3CCH(6-5) on the other, dust and gas temperatures appear to be equivalent in the dense gas of the OMC-1 region, but provide a bimodal distribution, one more directly related to star formation than the other. The non-thermal velocity dispersions of para-H2CO are positively correlated with the gas kinetic temperatures in regions of strong non-thermal motion (Mach number >2.5) of the OMC-1, implying that the higher temperature traced by para-H2CO is related to turbulence on a 0.06 pc scale. Combining the temperature measurements with para-H2CO and NH3(2,2)/(1,1) line ratios, we find direct evidence for the dense gas along the northern part of the OMC-1 10 km s$^{-1}$ filament heated by radiation from the central Orion nebula.

SiS in the circumstellar envelope of IRC +10126: maser and quasi-thermal emission

We present new Effelsberg-100 m, ATCA, and VLA observations of rotational SiS transitions in the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of IRC +10216. Thanks to the high angular resolution achieved by the ATCA observations, we unambiguously confirm that the molecule's J=1-0 transition exhibits maser action in this CSE, as first suggested more than thirty years ago. The maser emission's radial velocity peaking at a local standard of rest velocity of -39.862$\pm$0.065 km/s indicates that it arises from an almost fully accelerated shell. Monitoring observations show time variability of the SiS (1-0) maser. The two lowest-$J$ SiS quasi-thermal emission lines trace a much more extended emitting region than previous high-J SiS observations. Their distributions show that the SiS quasi-thermal emission consists of two components: one is very compact (radius<1.5", corresponding to <3$\times 10^{15}$ cm), and the other extends out to a radius >11". An incomplete shell-like structure is found in the north-east, which is indicative of existing SiS shells. Clumpy structures are also revealed in this CSE. The gain of the SiS (1-0) maser (optical depths of about -5 at the blue-shifted side and, assuming inversion throughout the entire line's velocity range, about -2 at the red-shifted side) suggests that it is unsaturated. The SiS (1-0) maser can be explained in terms of ro-vibrational excitation caused by infrared pumping, and we propose that infrared continuum emission is the main pumping source.

Rejuvenation of metallic glasses under high pressure

Modulating energy states of metallic glasses (MGs) is significant in understanding the nature of glasses and control their properties. In this study, we show that rejuvenation in enthalpy can be achieved and preserved in bulk MGs by using high pressure (HP) annealing, which is a controllable method to continuously alter the energy states of MGs. Contrary to the decrease in enthalpy by conventional annealing at ambient pressure, such rejuvenation can occur and be enhanced by increasing both of annealing temperature and pressure. By using double aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, it is revealed that the rejuvenation, which is attributed to coupling effect of high pressure and high temperature, originates from the microstructural change that involves "negative flow units" with a higher atomic packing density compared to that of the elastic matrix of MGs. The results demonstrate that HP annealing is an effective way to rejuvenate MGs into higher energy states, and it may assist in understanding the microstructural origin of the rejuvenation in MGs.

Molecular clouds and star formation toward the Galactic plane within 216.25$^{\rm o}\le$ l $\le$218.75$^{\rm o}$ and $-$0.75$^{\rm o} \le$ b $\le$1.25$^{\rm o}$

As a part of the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) survey, we performed a simultaneous 12CO(1-0), 13CO(1-0), C18O(1-0) mapping toward molecular clouds in a region encompassing 3.75 square degrees. We reveal three molecular clouds, the 15 km/s cloud, the 27 km/s cloud, and the 50 km/s cloud, in the surveyed region. The 50 km/s cloud is resolved with an angular resolution of around 1' for the first time. Investigating their morphology and velocity structures, we find that the 27 km/s cloud is likely affected by feedback from the stellar association Mon OB3 and the 50 km/s cloud is characterised by three large expanding molecular shells. The region is mapped in C18O (1-0) for the first time. We discover seven C18O clumps, which are likely to form massive stars, and 15 dust clumps based on the BGPS archival data. Using infrared color-color diagrams, we find 56 Class I and 107 Class II young stellar object (YSO) candidates. According to the distribution of YSO candidates, an overdensity is found around the HII region S287 and the intersection of two shells, indicative of triggering. The star formation efficiency and rate of the 27~km/s cloud are discussed. Comparing the observed values of the filament S287-main with the models of fragmentation, we suggest that turbulence controls the large scale of fragmentation in the filament while gravitational fragmentation plays an important role in the formation of YSOs on the small scale. We find that star-forming gas tends to have higher excitation temperature, higher 13CO opacity, and higher column density than non-star-forming gas, which is consistent with the point that star formation happens in denser gas and star-forming gas is heated by YSOs. Using the 1.1 mm dust emission to trace dense gas, we obtain a dense gas fraction of 2.7%-10.4% for the 27 km/s cloud.

A 1.3 cm Line Survey toward Orion KL

Orion KL has served as a benchmark for spectral line searches throughout the (sub)millimeter regime. The main goal is to systematically study spectral characteristics of Orion KL in the 1.3 cm band. We carried out a spectral line survey (17.9 GHz to 26.2 GHz) with the Effelsberg-100 m telescope towards Orion KL. We find 261 spectral lines, yielding an average line density of about 32 spectral features per GHz above 3$σ$. The identified lines include 164 radio recombination lines (RRLs) and 97 molecular lines. A total of 23 molecular transitions from species known to exist in Orion KL are detected for the first time in the interstellar medium. Non-metastable 15NH3 transitions are detected in Orion KL for the first time. Based on the velocity information of detected lines and the ALMA images, the spatial origins of molecular emission are constrained and discussed. A narrow feature is found in SO2 ($8_{1,7}-7_{2,6}$), possibly suggesting the presence of a maser line. Column densities and fractional abundances relative to H2 are estimated for 12 molecules with LTE methods. Rotational diagrams of non-metastable 14NH3 transitions with J=K+1 to J=K+4 yield different results; metastable 15NH3 is found to have a higher excitation temperature than non-metastable 15NH3, indicating that they may trace different regions. Elemental and isotopic abundance ratios are estimated: 12C/13C=63+-17, 14N/15N=100+-51, D/H=0.0083+-0.0045. The dispersion of the He/H ratios derived from H$α$/He$α$ pairs to H$δ$/He$δ$ pairs is very small, which is consistent with theoretical predictions that the departure coefficients bn factors for hydrogen and helium are nearly identical. Based on a non-LTE code neglecting excitation by the infrared radiation field and a likelihood analysis, we find that the denser regions have lower kinetic temperature, which favors an external heating of the Hot Core.

A 1.3 cm line survey toward IRC +10216

IRC +10216 is the prototypical carbon star exhibiting an extended molecular circumstellar envelope. Its spectral properties are therefore the template for an entire class of objects. The main goal is to systematically study the $λ$ $\sim$1.3 cm spectral line characteristics of IRC +10216. We carried out a spectral line survey with the Effelsberg-100 m telescope toward IRC +10216. It covers the frequency range between 17.8 GHz and 26.3 GHz (K-band). In the circumstellar shell of IRC +10216, we find 78 spectral lines, among which 12 remain unidentified. The identified lines are assigned to 18 different molecules and radicals. A total of 23 lines from species known to exist in this envelope are detected for the first time outside the Solar System and there are additional 20 lines first detected in IRC +10216. The potential orgin of "U" lines is also discussed. Assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), we then determine rotational temperatures and column densities of 17 detected molecules. Molecular abundances relative to H$_{2}$ are also estimated. A non-LTE analysis of NH$_{3}$ shows that the bulk of its emission arises from the inner envelope with a kinetic temperature of 70$\pm$20 K. Evidence for NH$_{3}$ emitting gas with higher kinetic temperature is also obtained, and potential abundance differences between various $^{13}$C-bearing isotopologues of HC$_{5}$N are evaluated. Overall, the isotopic $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio is estimated to be 49$\pm$9. Finally, a comparison of detected molecules in the $λ$ $\sim$1.3 cm range with the dark cloud TMC-1 indicates that silicate-bearing molecules are more predominant in IRC +10216.

HerMES: A Statistical Measurement of the Redshift Distribution of Herschel-SPIRE Sources Using the Cross-correlation Technique

The wide-area imaging surveys with the {\it Herschel} Space Observatory at sub-mm wavelengths have now resulted in catalogs of order one hundred thousand dusty, star-burst galaxies. We make a statistical estimate of $N(z)$ using a clustering analysis of sub-mm galaxies detected at each of 250, 350 and 500 $μ$m from the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) centered on the Boötes field. We cross-correlate {\it Herschel} galaxies against galaxy samples at optical and near-IR wavelengths from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey (NDWFS) and the Spitzer Deep Wide Field Survey (SDWFS). We create optical and near-IR galaxy samples based on their photometric or spectroscopic redshift distributions and test the accuracy of those redshift distributions with similar galaxy samples defined with catalogs of the Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS), as the COSMOS field has superior spectroscopy coverage. We model-fit the clustering auto and cross-correlations of {\it Herschel} and optical/IR galaxy samples to estimate $N(z)$ and clustering bias factors. The $S_{350} > 20$ mJy galaxies have a bias factor varying with redshift as $b(z)=1.0^{+1.0}_{-0.5}(1+z)^{1.2^{+0.3}_{-0.7}}$. This bias and the redshift dependence is broadly in agreement with galaxies that occupy dark matter halos of mass in the range of 10$^{12}$ to 10$^{13}$ M$_{\sun}$. We find that the redshift distribution peaks around $z \sim 0.5$ to 1 for galaxies selected at 250 $μ$m with an average redshift of $< z > = 1.8 \pm 0.2$. For 350 and 500 $μ$m-selected SPIRE samples the peak shifts to higher redshift, but the average redshift remains the same with a value of $1.9 \pm 0.2$.

The Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey: HerMES

The Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey, HerMES, is a legacy program designed to map a set of nested fields totalling ~380 deg^2. Fields range in size from 0.01 to ~20 deg^2, using Herschel-SPIRE (at 250, 350 and 500 μm), and Herschel-PACS (at 100 and 160 μm), with an additional wider component of 270 deg^2 with SPIRE alone. These bands cover the peak of the redshifted thermal spectral energy distribution from interstellar dust and thus capture the re-processed optical and ultra-violet radiation from star formation that has been absorbed by dust, and are critical for forming a complete multi-wavelength understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. The survey will detect of order 100,000 galaxies at 5σin some of the best studied fields in the sky. Additionally, HerMES is closely coordinated with the PACS Evolutionary Probe survey. Making maximum use of the full spectrum of ancillary data, from radio to X-ray wavelengths, it is designed to: facilitate redshift determination; rapidly identify unusual objects; and understand the relationships between thermal emission from dust and other processes. Scientific questions HerMES will be used to answer include: the total infrared emission of galaxies; the evolution of the luminosity function; the clustering properties of dusty galaxies; and the properties of populations of galaxies which lie below the confusion limit through lensing and statistical techniques. This paper defines the survey observations and data products, outlines the primary scientific goals of the HerMES team, and reviews some of the early results.

HerMES: detection of cosmic magnification of sub-mm galaxies using angular cross-correlation

Cosmic magnification is due to the weak gravitational lensing of sources in the distant Universe by foreground large-scale structure leading to coherent changes in the observed number density of the background sources. Depending on the slope of the background source number counts, cosmic magnification causes a correlation between the background and foreground galaxies, which is unexpected in the absence of lensing if the two populations are spatially disjoint. Previous attempts using submillimetre (sub-mm) sources have been hampered by small number statistics. The large number of sources detected in the {\it Herschel} Multi-tiered Extra-galactic Survey (HerMES) Lockman-SWIRE field enables us to carry out the first robust study of the cross-correlation between sub-mm sources and sources at lower redshifts. Using ancillary data we compile two low-redshift samples from SDSS and SWIRE with ~ 0.2 and 0.4, respectively, and cross-correlate with two sub-mm samples based on flux density and colour criteria, selecting galaxies preferentially at z ~ 2. We detect cross-correlation on angular scales between ~1 and 50 arcmin and find clear evidence that this is primarily due to cosmic magnification. A small, but non-negligible signal from intrinsic clustering is likely to be present due to the tails of the redshift distribution of the sub-mm sources overlapping with those of the foreground samples.

Optical properties of the iron-arsenic superconductor BaFe1.85Co0.15As2

The transport and complex optical properties of the electron-doped iron-arsenic superconductor BaFe1.85Co0.15As2 with Tc = 25 K have been examined in the Fe-As planes above and below Tc. A Bloch-Gruneisen analysis of the resistivity yields a weak electron-phonon coupling constant lambda_ph ~ 0.2. The low-frequency optical response in the normal state appears to be dominated by the electron pocket and may be described by a weakly-interacting Fermi liquid with a Drude plasma frequency of omega_p,D ~ 7840 cm-1 (~ 0.972 eV) and scattering rate 1/tau_D ~ 125 cm-1 (~ 15 meV) just above Tc. The frequency-dependent scattering rate 1/tau(omega) has kinks at ~ 12 and 55 meV that appear to be related to bosonic excitations. Below Tc the majority of the superconducting plasma frequency originates from the electron pocket and is estimated to be omega_p,S ~ 5200 cm-1 (lambda0 ~ 3000 Angstroms) for T << Tc, indicating that less than half the free carriers in the normal state have collapsed into the condensate, suggesting that this material is not in the clean limit. Supporting this finding is the observation that this material falls close to the universal scaling line for a BCS dirty-limit superconductor in the weak-coupling limit. There are two energy scales for the superconductivity in the optical conductivity and photo-induced reflectivity at Delta1 ~ 3.1 +/- 0.2 meV and Delta2 ~ 7.4 +/- 0.3 meV. This corresponds to either the gaping of the electron and hole pockets, respectively, or an anisotropic s-wave gap on the electron pocket; both views are consistent with the s+/- model.

Surface Generation Analysis in Micro End-Milling Considering the Influences of Grain

Micro end-milling method is a universal micro manufacturing method, which can be used to fabricating complex 3D structures and parts with many materials. But compared with their micrometer order size, their surface roughness quality is not satisfied. In this paper, the different metal phase grains influences are researched, and the micro end-milling process is described while the material is anisotropic. In this paper, the physical characteristics of different grains, especially friction coefficient and elastic module, are very critical to determine the chip formation process and surface generation. The chip is often discontinues because of the grain boundary effect. Through the micro end-milling experiment, the bottom surface results correlate very well with the theory analysis.
