Neutron calibration facility with an Am-Be source for pulse shape discrimination measurement of CsI(Tl) crystals

We constructed a neutron calibration facility based on a 300-mCi Am-Be source in conjunction with a search for weakly interacting massive particle candidates for dark matter. The facility is used to study the response of CsI(Tl) crystals to nuclear recoils induced by neutrons from the Am-Be source and comparing them with the response to electron recoils produced by Compton scattering of 662-keV $γ$-rays from a $^{137}$Cs source. The measured results on pulse shape discrimination (PSD) between nuclear- and electron-recoil events are quantified in terms of quality factors. A comparison with similar result from a neutron reactor demonstrate the feasibility of performing calibrations of PSD measurements using neutrons from a Am-Be source.

Search for Low-Mass Dark Matter with CsI(Tl) Crystal Detectors

We present a search for low-mass ($\leq 20 GeV/c^{2}$) weakly interacting massive particles(WIMPs), strong candidates of dark matter particles, using the low-background CsI(Tl) detector array of the Korea Invisible Mass Search (KIMS) experiment. With a total data exposure of 24,324.3kg$\cdot$days,we search for WIMP interaction signals produced by nuclei recoiling from WIMP-nuclear elastic scattering with visible energies between 2 and 4keV. The observed energy distribution of candidate events is consistent with null signals, and upper limits of the WIMP-proton spin-independent interaction are set with a 90% confidence level. The observed limit rejects most of the low mass region of parameter space favored by the DAMA annual modulation signal.

Search for bosonic superweakly interacting massive dark matter particles with the XMASS-I detector

Bosonic superweakly interacting massive particles (super-WIMPs) are a candidate for warm dark matter. With the absorption of such a boson by a xenon atom these dark matter candidates would deposit an energy equivalent to their rest mass in the detector. This is the first direct detection experiment exploring the vector super-WIMPs in the mass range between 40 and 120 keV. Using 165.9 days of data no significant excess above background was observed in the fiducial mass of 41 kg. The present limit for the vector super-WIMPs excludes the possibility that such particles constitute all of dark matter. The absence of a signal also provides the most stringent direct constraint on the coupling constant of pseudoscalar super-WIMPs to electrons. The unprecedented sensitivity was achieved exploiting the low background at a level $10^{-4}$ kg$^{-1}$keV$_{ee}^{-1}$day$^{-1}$ in the detector.

Search for inelastic WIMP nucleus scattering on $^{129}$Xe in data from the XMASS-I experiment

A search for inelastic scattering of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) on the isotope $^{129}$Xe was done in data taken with the single phase liquid xenon detector XMASS at the Kamioka Observatory. Using a restricted volume containing 41 kg of LXe at the very center of our detector we observed no significant excess of events in 165.9 days of data. Our background reduction allowed us to derive our limits without explicitly subtracting the remaining events which are compatible with background expectations and derive for e.g. a 50 GeV WIMP an upper limit for its inelastic cross section on $^{129}$Xe nuclei of 3.2 pb at the 90% confidence level.

Thermal Model and Optimization of a Large Crystal Detector using a Metallic Magnetic Calorimeter

We established a simple thermal model of the heat flow in a large crystal detector designed for a neutrinoless double beta decay experiment. The detector is composed of a CaMoO$_{4}$ crystal and a metallic magnetic calorimeter (MMC). The thermal connection between the absorber and the sensor consists of a gold film evaporated on the crystal surface and gold bonding wires attached to this film and the MMC sensor. The model describes athermal and thermal processes of heat flow to the gold film. A successive experiment based on optimization calculations of the area and thickness of the gold film showed a significant improvement in the size and rise-time of the measured signals.

Implications of Charge Ordering in the High Tc Cuprate Superconductors in the Far-infrared Spectroscopy

We addressed the issue of the absence of the far-infrared signatures pertaining to charge ordering in the published far-infrared reflectivity data of La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals while other experimental probes unravel that charge ordering is a hallmark of the superconducting cuprates. Through direct comparison of the far-infrared data reported by various groups side by side and also with the Raman scattering data, we found that the inconsistencies stem from the failure in capturing delicate spectral features embedded in the close-to-perfect ab-plane far-infrared reflectivity of La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals by misidentifying the reflectivity as the Drude-like metallic reflectivity. The analysis of the close-to-true reflectivity data reveals that only a small fraction (< 3 %) of the total doping-induced charge carriers (electrons) are itinerant on the electron lattice made up with the rest of the electrons (> 97 %) at all doping levels up to 16 %. We conclude that the far-infrared reflectivity study is far from being ready to construct a coherent picture of the ubiquitous charge ordering phenomenon and its relationship with the high Tc superconductivity.

Search for solar axions in XMASS, a large liquid-xenon detector

XMASS, a low-background, large liquid-xenon detector, was used to search for solar axions that would be produced by bremsstrahlung and Compton effects in the Sun. With an exposure of 5.6ton days of liquid xenon, the model-independent limit on the coupling for mass $\ll$ 1keV is $|g_{aee}|< 5.4\times 10^{-11}$ (90% C.L.), which is a factor of two stronger than the existing experimental limit. The bounds on the axion masses for the DFSZ and KSVZ axion models are 1.9 and 250eV, respectively. In the mass range of 10-40keV, this study produced the most stringent limit, which is better than that previously derived from astrophysical arguments regarding the Sun to date.

Light WIMP search in XMASS

A search for light dark matter using low-threshold data from the single phase liquid xenon scintillation detector XMASS, has been conducted. Using the entire 835 kg inner volume as target, the analysis threshold can be lowered to 0.3 keVee (electron-equivalent) to search for light dark matter. With low-threshold data corresponding to a 5591.4 kg$\cdot$day exposure of the detector and without discriminating between nuclear-recoil and electronic events, XMASS excludes part of the parameter space favored by other experiments.

In-plane and Out-of-plane Plasma Resonances in Optimally Doped La1.84Sr0.16CuO4

We addressed the inconsistency between the electron mass anisotropy ratios determined by the far-infrared experiments and DC conductivity measurements. By eliminating possible sources of error and increasing the sensitivity and resolution in the far-infrared reflectivity measurement on the single crystalline and on the polycrystalline La1.84Sr0.16CuO4, we have unambiguously identified that the source of the mass anisotropy problem is in the estimation of the free electron density involved in the charge transport and superconductivity. In this study we found that only 2.8 % of the total doping-induced charge density is itinerant at optimal doping. Our result not only resolves the mass anisotropy puzzle but also points to a novel electronic structure formed by the rest of the electrons that sets the stage for the high temperature superconductivity.

Possible Origin of the Anomalous Far-infrared Absorption by Small Metal Particles

We have carried out the far-infrared transmission measurements on the ligand stabilized Au55 particles dispersed in CsI. We have found that there exists the crossover energy Ec ~ 160 cm -1 (~ 19 meV) beyond which the absorption coefficient recovers the classical electric dipole-like absorption and, hence, the absorption for frequencies higher than Ec is insensitive to the particle size. We propose that the physical origin of the enigmatic anomalous far-IR absorption by small metal particles lies in the absorption arising from the transitions the electrons between the discrete energy levels below Ec on which the particle size independent, classical electric dipole absorption develops for frequencies higher than Ec.

Initiation of CME and Associated Flare Caused by Helical Kink Instability Observed by SDO/AIA

In this paper, we present multiwavelength observations of helical kink instability as a trigger of a CME which occurred in AR NOAA 11163 on 24 February 2011. The CME was associated with a M3.5 limb flare. High resolution observations from SDO/AIA suggest the development of helical kink instability in the erupting prominence, which implies a flux rope structure of the magnetic field. A brightening starts below the apex of the prominence with its slow rising motion (~100 km/s) during the activation phase. A bright structure, indicative of a helix with ~3-4 turns, was transiently formed at this position. The corresponding twist of ~$6π-8π$ is sufficient to generate the helical kink instability in a flux rope according to recently developed models. A slowly rising blob structure was subsequently formed at the apex of the prominence, and a flaring loop was observed near the footpoints. Within two minutes, a second blob was formed in the northern prominence leg. The second blob erupts (like a plasmoid ejection) with the detachment of the northern prominence leg, and flare intensity maximizes. The first blob at the prominence apex shows rotational motion in the counterclockwise direction in the plane of sky, interpreted as unwinding motion of a helix, and it also erupts to give the coronal mass ejection (CME). RHESSI hard X-ray sources show the two footpoint sources and a loop-top source during the flare. We found RHESSI hard X-ray flux, soft X-ray flux derivative and CME acceleration in the low corona correlate well, which is in agreement with the standard flare model (CSHKP). We also discuss the possible role of ballooning as well as torus instabilities in driving the CME. We conclude that the CME and flare were triggered by the helical kink instability in a flux rope and accelerated mainly by the torus instability.

Observation of the predicted charge collective mode of the Tc = 45 K superconducting phase of La2CuO4+δ

We report the far-infrared (far-IR) observation of the Goldstone mode at ~ 72 cm-1 (~ 9 meV) predicted to exist in the superconducting phase of the transition temperature (Tc) at 45 K in the La2CuO4-based superconductors. Our observation furthers the experimental support for the two-component picture where the localized charge texture, formed at a specific planar hole density (Ppl), is tied to the HTS at Tc = 15 K, 30 K, and 45 K in a hierarchical fashion at the so-called "magic" doping level at Ppl = 1/16, 2/16, and 3/16 respectively.

Scintillation-only Based Pulse Shape Discrimination for Nuclear and Electron Recoils in Liquid Xenon

In a dedicated test setup at the Kamioka Observatory we studied pulse shape discrimination (PSD) in liquid xenon (LXe) for dark matter searches. PSD in LXe was based on the observation that scintillation light from electron events was emitted over a longer period of time than that of nuclear recoil events, and our method used a simple ratio of early to total scintillation light emission in a single scintillation event. Requiring an efficiency of 50% for nuclear recoil retention we reduced the electron background to 7.7\pm1.1(stat)\pm1.2 0.6(sys)\times10-2 at energies between 4.8 and 7.2 keVee and to 7.7\pm2.8(stat)\pm2.5 2.8(sys)\times10-3 at energies between 9.6 and 12 keVee for a scintillation light yield of 20.9 p.e./keV. Further study was done by masking some of that light to reduce this yield to 4.6 p.e./keV, the same method results in an electron event reduction of 2.4\pm0.2(stat)\pm0.3 0.2(sys)\times10-1 for the lower of the energy regions above. We also observe that in contrast to nuclear recoils the fluctuations in our early to total ratio for electron events are larger than expected from statistical fluctuations.

Measurement of the Energy Gap of Au55 Nanoparticles Using Far-infrared Transmission Spectroscopy

We have carried out far-infrared (far-IR) transmission measurements on the ligand stabilized Au55 nanoparticles dispersed in Teflon at volume fractions ranging from 0.2% to 1%. Instead of a series of peaks which might arise from the electron transition between discrete energy levels, we have observed a broad far-IR absorption coefficient that follows with an onset at Δ ~ 10 cm-1. Furthermore this frequency dependence is totally different from that of the expected absorption due to the induced electric dipole. The onset of the absorption reminiscent of an energy gap at ~ 10 cm-1 (~ 1. 2 meV) is surprisingly smaller than that of the expected for a metal sphere of 5.3 Å in radius and independent of temperature. In this work we did not observe the level correlation effect on the far-IR absorption predicted for an ensemble of metal nanoparticles. It is concluded that Au55 nanoparticles behave like a three-dimensional (3D) semimetal with an energy gap Δ ~ 10 cm-1 rather than a giant atom.

Field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase of a two-leg spin-1/2 ladder with strong leg interactions

We study the magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped quantum phase that has no magnetic long-range order into a gapless phase in the spin-1/2 ladder compound bis(2,3-dimethylpyridinium) tetrabromocuprate (DIMPY). At temperatures below about 1 K, the specific heat in the gapless phase attains an asymptotic linear temperature dependence, characteristic of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Inelastic neutron scattering and the specific heat measurements in both phases are in good agreement with theoretical calculations, demonstrating that DIMPY is the first model material for an S=1/2 two-leg spin ladder in the strong-leg regime.
