On relation between renormalized frequency and heat capacity for particles in an anharmonic potential

For free particles in a simple harmonic potential plus a weak anharmonicity, characterized by a set of anharmonic parameters, Newtonian mechanics asserts that there is a renormalization of the natural frequency of the periodic motion; and statistical mechanics claims that the anharmonicity causes a correction to the heat capacity of an ideal gas in the anharmonic potential. The orbital motion and thermal motion depend on the same anharmonic parameters, but in different combinations. These two manners of combinations are fundamentally different, demonstrating that statistical law can not emerge from the many-body limit of deterministic law for one-body.

A correspondence from renormalized frequency to heat capacity for particles in an anharmonic potential

For particles in an anharmonic potential, classical mechanics asserts that there is a renormalization of the bare frequency of the oscillatory motion, and statistical mechanics claims that the anharmonicity causes a correction to the heat capacity of an ideal gas composed of particles in the anharmonic potential. When the frequency and the heat capacity are expressed in perturbative series, respective, in terms of the characteristic lengths in mechanics and statistical physics, the expansion coefficients have an order-by-order correspondence. This correspondence is in contrast to our intuition that the renormalized frequency enters the statistical mechanics as a single quantity.

M dwarf catalog of LAMOST pilot survey

We present a spectroscopic catalog of 67082 M dwarfs from the LAMOST pilot survey. For each spectrum of the catalog, spectral subtype, radial velocity, equivalent width of H$α$, a number of prominent molecular band indices and the metal sensitive parameter $ζ$ are provided . Spectral subtype have been estimated by a remedied Hammer program (Original Hammer: Covey et al. 2007), in which indices are reselected to obtain more accurate auto-classified spectral subtypes. All spectra in this catalog have been visually inspected to confirm the spectral subtypes. Radial velocities have been well measured by our developed program which uses cross-correlation method and estimates uncertainty of radial velocity as well. We also examine the magnetic activity properties of M dwarfs traced by H$α$ emission line. The molecular band indices included in this catalog are temperature or metallicity sensitive and can be used for future analysis of the physical properties of M dwarfs. The catalog is available on the website \url{http://sciwiki.lamost.org/MCatalogPilot/}.

Impact of accretion on the statistics of neutron star masses

We have collected the parameter of 38 neutron stars (NSs) in binary systems with spin periods and measured masses. By adopting the Boot-strap method, we reproduced the procedure of mass calculated for each system separately, to determine the truly mass distribution of the NS that obtained from observation. We also applied the Monte-Carlo simulation and introduce the characteristic spin period 20 ms, in order to distinguish between millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and less recycled pulsars. The mass distributions of MSPs and the less recycled pulsars could be fitted by a Gaussian function as $\rm 1.45\pm0.42 M_{\odot}$ and $\rm 1.31\pm0.17 M_{\odot} (\rm with ~ 1σ)$ respectively. As such, the MSP masses are heavier than those in less recycled systems by factor of $\rm \sim 0.13M_{\odot}$, since the accretion effect during the recycling process.

Deriving fundamental parameters of millisecond pulsars via AIC in white dwarfs

We present a study of the observational properties of Millisecond Pulsars (MSPs) by way of their magnetic fields, spin periods and masses. These measurements are derived through the scenario of Accretion Induced Collapse (AIC) of white dwarfs (WDs) in stellar binary systems, in order to provide a greater understanding of the characteristics of MSP populations. In addition, we demonstrate a strong evolutionary connection between neutron stars and WDs with binary companions from a stellar binary evolution perspective via the AIC process.

Study of measured pulsar masses and their possible conclusions

We study the statistics of 61 measured masses of neutron stars (NSs) in binary pulsar systems, including 18 double NS (DNS) systems, 26 radio pulsars (10 in our Galaxy) with white dwarf (WD) companions, 3 NSs with main-sequence companions, 13 NSs in X-ray binaries, and one undetermined system. We derive a mean value of M = 1.46 +/- 0.30 solar masses. When the 46 NSs with measured spin periods are divided into two groups at 20 milliseconds, i.e., the millisecond pulsar (MSP) group and others, we find that their mass averages are, respectively, M=1.57 +/- 0.35 solar masses and M=1.37+/- 0.23 solar masses. In the framework of the pulsar recycling hypothesis, this suggests that an accretion of approximately 0.2 solar mass is sufficient to spin up a neutron star and place it in the millisecond pulsar group. An empirical relation between the accreting mass and MSP spin period is ΔM=0.43 (solar mass)(P/1 ms)^{-2/3}. UNlike the standard recycling process, if a MSP is formed by the accretion induced collapse (AIC) of a white dwarf with a mass less than Chandrasekha limit, e.g. 1.35 solar mass, then the binary MSPs involved in AICs is not be higher than 20%, which imposes a constraint on the AIC origin of MSPs.

A model for upper kHz QPO coherence of accreting neutron star

{We investigate the coherence of the twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in the low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) theoretically. The profile of upper kHz QPO, interpreted as Keplerian frequency, is ascribed to the radial extent of the kHz QPO emission region, associated with the transitional layer at the magnetosphere-disk boundary, which corresponds to the coherence of upper kHz QPO. The theoretical model for Q-factor of upper kHz QPO is applied to the observational data of five Atoll and five Z sources, and the consistence is implied.

Spin Period Evolution of Recycled Pulsar in Accreting Binary

We investigate the spin-period evolutions of recycled pulsars in binary accreting systems. Taking both the accretion induced field decay and spin-up into consideration, we calculate their spin-period evolutions influenced by the initial magnetic-field strengths, initial spin-periods and accretion rates, respectively. The results indicate that the minimum spin-period (or maximum spin frequency) of millisecond pulsar (MSP) is independent of the initial conditions and accretion rate when the neutron star (NS) accretes $\sim> 0.2\ms$. The accretion torque with the fastness parameter and gravitational wave (GW) radiation torque may be responsible for the formation of the minimum spin-period (maximum spin frequency). The fastest spin frequency (716 Hz) of MSP can be inferred to associate with a critical fastness parameter about $ω_{c}=0.55$. Furthermore, the comparisons with the observational data are presented in the field-period ($B-P$) diagram.

Comparing six evolutionary population synthesis models through spectral synthesis on galaxies

We compare six popularly used evolutionary population synthesis (EPS) models (BC03, CB07, Ma05, GALEV, GRASIL, Vazdekis/Miles) through fitting the full optical spectra of six representative types of galaxies (star-forming and composite galaxies, Seyfert 2s, LINERs, E+A and early-type galaxies), which are taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Throughout our paper, we use the simple stellar populations (SSPs) from each EPS model and the software STARLIGHT to do our fits. Our main results are: Using different EPS models the resulted numerical values of contributed light fractions change obviously, even though the dominant populations are consistent. The stellar population synthesis does depend on the selection of age and metallicity, while it does not depend on the stellar evolution track much. The importance of young populations decreases from star-forming, composite, Seyfert 2, LINER to early-type galaxies, and E+A galaxies lie between composite galaxies and Seyfert 2s in most cases. We conclude that different EPS models do derive different stellar populations, so that it is not reasonable to directly compare stellar populations estimated from different EPS models. To get reliable results, we should use the same EPS model for the compared samples.

The emission positions of kHz QPOs and Kerr spacetime influence

Based the Alfven wave oscillation model (AWOM) and relativistic precession model (RPM) for twin kHz QPOs, we estimate the emission positions of most detected kHz QPOs to be at r=18+-3 km (R/15km) except Cir X-1 at r = 30\+-5 km (R/15km). For the proposed Keplerian frequency as an upper limit to kHz QPO, the spin effects in Kerr Spacetime are discussed, which have about a 5% (2%) modification for that of the Schwarzchild case for the spin frequency of 1000 (400) Hz.The application to the four typical QPO sources, Cir X-1, Sco X-1, SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE 1807-294, is mentioned.

Stellar population analysis on local infrared-selected galaxies

To study the stellar population of local infrared galaxies, which contain star-forming galaxies, composite galaxies, LINERs, and Seyfert 2s. We also want to find whether infrared luminosity and spectral class have any effects on their stellar populations. The sample galaxies are selected from the main galaxy sample of SDSS-DR4 and then cross-correlated with the IRAS-PSCz catalog. We fit our spectra (stellar absorption lines and continua) using the spectral synthesis code STARLIGHT on the base of the templates of Simple Stellar Population and the spectra of star clusters.Among the 4 spectral classes, LINERs present the oldest stellar populations, and the other 3 sub-samples all present substantial young and intermediate age populations and very few old populations. The importance of young populations decreases from star-forming, composite, Seyfert 2 to LINER. As to different infrared luminosity bins, ULIGs & LIGs (log($L_{IR}/L_{\odot})\geq$11) present younger populations than starbursts and normal galaxies. However, the dominant contributors to mass are old populations in all sample galaxies. The fittings by using the spectra of star clusters with different ages and metallicities as templates also give consistent results. The dominated populations in star-forming and composite galaxies are those with metallicity $Z=0.2Z_\odot$, while LINERs and Seyfert 2s are more metal-rich. The normal galaxies are more metal-rich than the ULIGs & LIGs and starbursts for the star-forming galaxies within different infrared luminosity bins. Additionally, we also compare some synthesis results with other parameters obtained from the MPA/JHU catalog.

Does Sub-millisecond Pulsar XTE J1739-285 Contain a Low Magnetic Neutron Star or Quark Star ?

With the possible detection of the fastest spinning nuclear-powered pulsar XTE J1739-285 of frequency 1122 Hz (0.8913 ms), it arouses us to constrain the mass and radius of its central compact object and to imply the stellar matter compositions: neutrons or quarks. Spun-up by the accreting materials to such a high rotating speed, the compact star should have either a small radius or short innermost stable circular orbit. By the empirical relation between the upper kHz quasi-periodic oscillation frequency and star spin frequency, a strong constraint on mass and radius is obtained as 1.51 solar masses and 10.9 km, which excludes most equations of states (EOSs) of normal neutrons and strongly hints the star promisingly to be a strange quark star. Furthermore, the star magnetic field is estimated to be about $4\times10^{7} (G) < B < 10^{9} (G) $, which reconciles with those of millisecond radio pulsars, revealing the clues of the evolution linkage of two types of astrophysical objects.

Kernel Regression For Determining Photometric Redshifts From Sloan Broadband Photometry

We present a new approach, kernel regression, to determine photometric redshifts for 399,929 galaxies in the Fifth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In our case, kernel regression is a weighted average of spectral redshifts of the neighbors for a query point, where higher weights are associated with points that are closer to the query point. One important design decision when using kernel regression is the choice of the bandwidth. We apply 10-fold cross-validation to choose the optimal bandwidth, which is obtained as the cross-validation error approaches the minimum. The experiments show that the optimal bandwidth is different for diverse input patterns, the least rms error of photometric redshift estimation arrives at 0.019 using color+eClass as the inputs, the less rms error amounts to 0.020 using ugriz+eClass as the inputs. Here eClass is a galaxy spectra type. Then the little rms scatter is 0.021 with color+r as the inputs.

The correlations between the spin frequencies and kHz QPOs of Neutron Stars in LMXBs

We studied the correlations between spin frequencies and kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries. The updated data of kHz QPOs and spin frequencies are statistically analyzed. We found that when two simultaneous kHz QPOs are present in the power spectrum, the minimum frequency of upper kHz QPO is at least 1.3 times larger than the spin frequency, i.e. ν_{s}<ν_{2min}/1.3. We also found that the average kHz QPO peak separation in 6 Atoll sources anti-correlates with the spin frequency in the form \lan\dn\ran = -(0.19\pm0.05)\ns+(389.40\pm21.67)Hz. If we shifted this correlation in the direction of the peak separation by a factor of 1.5, this correlation matches the data points of the two accretion powered millisecond X-ray pulsars, SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE J1807-294.

Evolution of Magnetic Fields in Stars Across the Upper Main Sequence: II. Observed distribution of the magnetic field geometry

We re-discuss the evolutionary state of upper main sequence magnetic stars using a sample of Ap and Bp stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes and definitely determined longitudinal magnetic fields. We confirm our previous results obtained from the study of Ap and Bp stars with accurate measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus and mean quadratic magnetic fields that magnetic stars of mass M < 3 M_sun are concentrated towards the centre of the main-sequence band. In contrast, stars with masses M > 3 M_sun seem to be concentrated closer to the ZAMS. The study of a few known members of nearby open clusters with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes confirms these conclusions. Stronger magnetic fields tend to be found in hotter, younger and more massive stars, as well as in stars with shorter rotation periods. No evidence is found for any loss of angular momentum during the main-sequence life. The magnetic flux remains constant over the stellar life time on the main sequence. An excess of stars with large obliquities beta is detected in both higher and lower mass stars. The obliquity angle distribution as inferred from the distribution of r-values appears random at the time magnetic stars become observable on the H-R diagram. After quite a short time spent on the main sequence, the obliquity angle beta tends to reach values close to either 90 deg or 0 deg for M < 3 M_sun. The evolution of the obliquity angle beta seems to be somewhat different for low and high mass stars. While we find a strong hint for an increase of beta with the elapsed time on the main sequence for stars with M > 3 M_sun, no similar trend is found for stars with M < 3 M_sun. However, the predominance of high values of beta at advanced ages in these stars is notable.

Study on Correlations between the Twin Kilohertz Quasi-periodic Oscillations in Low-mass X-ray Binaries

The recently updated data of the twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in the neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries are analyzed. The power-law fitting $ν_{1}=a(ν_{2}/1000)^{b}$ and linear fitting $ν_{2}=Aν_{1}+B$ are applied, individually, to the data points of four Z sources (GX 17+2, GX 340+0, GX 5-1 and Sco X-1) and four Atoll sources (4U 0614+09, 4U 1608-52, 4U 1636-53 and 4U 1728-34). The $χ^{2}$-tests show that the power-law correlation and linear correlation both can fit data well. Moreover, the comparisons between the data and the theoretical models for kHz QPOs are discussed.

The Interpretations For the Low and High Frequency QPO Correlations of X-ray Sources Among White Dwarfs, Neutron Stars and Black Holes

It is found that there exists an empirical linear relation between the high frequency $\nhigh$ and low frequency $\nlow$ of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) for black hole candidate (BHC), neutron star (NS) and white dwarf (WD) in the binary systems, which spans five orders of magnitude in frequency. For the NS Z (Atoll) sources, $ν_{high}$ and $ν_{low}$ are identified as the lower kHz QPO frequency and horizontal branch oscillations (HBOs) $\nh$ (broad noise components); for the black hole candidates and low-luminosity neutron stars, they are the QPOs and broad noise components at frequencies between 1 and 10 Hz; for WDs, they are the ``dwarf nova oscillations'' (DNOs) and QPOs of cataclysmic variables (CVs). To interpret this relation, our model ascribes $ν_{high}$ to the Alfvén wave oscillation frequency at a preferred radius and $ν_{low}$ to the same mechanism at another radius. Then, we can obtain $\nlow = 0.08 \nhigh$ and the relation between the upper kHz QPO frequency $\nt$ and HBO to be $\nh \simeq 56 ({\rm Hz}) (\nt/{\rm kHz})^{2}$, which are in accordance with the observed empirical relations. Furthermore, some implications of model are discussed, including why QPO frequencies of white dwarfs and neutron stars span five orders of magnitude in frequency. \\
