Experimental Limit to Interstellar 244Pu Abundance

Short-lived nuclides, now extinct in the solar system, are expected to be present in the interstellar medium (ISM). Grains of ISM origin were recently discovered in the inner solar system and at Earth orbit and may accrete onto Earth after ablation in the atmosphere. A favorable matrix for detection of such extraterrestrial material is presented by deep open-sea sediments with very low sedimentation rates (0.8-3 mm/kyr). We report here on the measurement of Pu isotopic abundances in a 1-kg deep-sea dry sediment collected in 1992 in the North Pacific. Our measured value of (3+-3)x10^5 244Pu atoms in the Pu-separated fraction of the sample shows no excess over the expected stratospheric nuclear fallout content and under reasonable assumptions we derive a limit of 2x10^-11 g-244Pu/g-ISM for the abundance of 244Pu in ISM.

XMM-Newton observation of the Lockman Hole; I. The X-ray Data

We report on the first deep X-ray survey with the XMM-Newton observatory during the performance verification phase. The field of the Lockman Hole, one of the best studied sky areas over a very wide range of wavelengths, has been observed. A total of ~100 ksec good exposure time has been accumulated. Combining the images of the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) detectors we reach a flux limit of 0.31, 1.4 and 2.4 X 10^{-15} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}, respectively in the 0.5-2, 2-10, and 5-10 keV band. Within an off-axis angle of 10 arcmin we detect 148, 112 and 61 sources, respectively. The log(N)-log(S) relation in the three bands is compared with previous results. In particular in the 5-10 keV band these observations present the deepest X-ray survey ever, about a factor 20 more sensitive than the previous BeppoSAX observations. Using X-ray spectral diagnostics and the set of previously known, spectroscopically identified ROSAT sources in the field, the new sources can be classified. XMM-Newton detects a significant number (~40%) of X-ray sources with hard, probably intrinsically absorbed X-ray spectra, confirming a prediction of the population synthesis models for the X-ray background.

Loose Groups of Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

A ``friends-of-friends'' percolation algorithm has been used to extract a catalogue of dn/n = 80 density enhancements (groups) from the six slices of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). The full catalogue contains 1495 groups and includes 35% of the LCRS galaxy sample. A clean sample of 394 groups has been derived by culling groups from the full sample which either are too close to a slice edge, have a crossing time greater than a Hubble time, have a corrected velocity dispersion of zero, or contain a 55-arcsec ``orphan'' (a galaxy with a mock redshift which was excluded from the original LCRS redshift catalogue due to its proximity to another galaxy -- i.e., within 55 arcsec). Median properties derived from the clean sample include: line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_los = 164km/s, crossing time t_cr = 0.10/H_0, harmonic radius R_h = 0.58/h Mpc, pairwise separation R_p = 0.64/h Mpc, virial mass M_vir = (1.90x10^13)/h M_sun, total group R-band luminosity L_tot = (1.30x10^11)/h^2 L_sun, and R-band mass-to-light ratio M/L = 171h M_sun/L_sun; the median number of observed members in a group is 3.

The X-ray CCD camera of the MAXI Experiment on the ISS/JEM

MAXI, Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image, is the X-ray observatory on the Japanese experimental module (JEM) Exposed Facility (EF) on the International Space Station (ISS). MAXI is a slit scanning camera which consists of two kinds of X-ray detectors: one is a one-dimensional position-sensitive proportional counter with a total area of $\sim 5000 cm^2$, the Gas Slit Camera (GSC), and the other is an X-ray CCD array with a total area $\sim 200 cm^2$, the Solid-state Slit Camera (SSC). The GSC subtends a field of view with an angular dimension of 1$^\circ\times 180^\circ$ while the SSC subtends a field of view with an angular dimension of 1$^\circ$ times a little less than 180$^\circ$. In the course of one station orbit, MAXI can scan almost the entire sky with a precision of 1$^\circ$ and with an X-ray energy range of 0.5-30 keV. We have developed the engineering model of CCD chips and the analogue electronics for the SSC. The energy resolution of EM CCD for Mn K$α$ has a full-width at half maximum of $\simeq$ 182 eV. Readout noise is $\simeq$ 11 e^- rms.

Groups of Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

A "friends-of-friends" percolation algorithm has been used to extract a catalogue of drho/rho = 80 density enhancements (groups) from the six slices of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). The full catalogue contains 1495 groups and includes 35% of the LCRS galaxy sample. A statistical sample of 394 groups has been derived by culling groups from the full sample which either are too close to a slice edge, have a crossing time greater than a Hubble time, have a corrected velocity dispersion of zero or less, or contain a 55 arcsec "orphan" (a galaxy with a "faked" redshift excluded from the original LCRS redshift catalogue due to its proximity --- i.e., within 55 arcsec --- of another galaxy). Median properties derived from the statistical sample include: line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_los = 164 km/s, crossing time t_cr = 0.10/H_0, harmonic radius R_h = 0.58/h Mpc, pairwise separation R_p = 0.64/h Mpc, virial mass M_vir = (1.90x10^13)/h M_sun, total group R-band luminosity L_tot = (1.40x10^11)/h^2 L_sun, and R-band mass-to-light ratio M/L = 153h M_sun/L_sun.

Applications of the Ashtekar gravity to four dimensional hyperkähler geometry and Yang-Mills Instantons

The Ashtekar-Mason-Newman equations are used to construct the hyperkähler metrics on four dimensional manifolds. These equations are closely related to anti self-dual Yang-Mills equations of the infinite dimensional gauge Lie algebras of all volume preserving vector fields. Several examples of hyperkähler metrics are presented through the reductions of anti self-dual connections. For any gauge group anti self-dual connections on hyperkähler manifolds are constructed using the solutions of both Nahm and Laplace equations.

The Environment of ``E+A'' Galaxies

The violent star formation history of ``E+A'' galaxies and their detection almost exclusively in distant clusters is frequently used to link them to the ``Butcher-Oemler effect'' and to argue that cluster environment influences galaxy evolution. From 11113 spectra in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey, we have obtained a unique sample of 21 nearby ``E+A" galaxies. Surprisingly, a large fraction (about 75%) of these ``E+A''s lie in the field. Therefore, interactions with the cluster environment, in the form of the ICM or cluster potential, are not essential for ``E+A'' formation. If one mechanism is responsible for ``E+A''s, their existence in the field and the tidal features in at least 5 of the 21 argue that galaxy-galaxy interactions and mergers are that mechanism. The most likely environments for such interactions are poor groups, which have lower velocity dispersions than clusters and higher galaxy densities than the field. In hierarchical models, groups fall into clusters in greater numbers at intermediate redshifts than they do today. Thus, the Butcher-Oemler effect may reflect the typical evolution of galaxies in groups and in the field rather than the influence of clusters on star formation in galaxies. This abstract is abridged.
