Cache-enabled Wireless Networks with Opportunistic Interference Alignment

Both caching and interference alignment (IA) are promising techniques for future wireless networks. Nevertheless, most of existing works on cache-enabled IA wireless networks assume that the channel is invariant, which is unrealistic considering the time-varying nature of practical wireless environments. In this paper, we consider realistic time-varying channels. Specifically, the channel is formulated as a finite-state Markov channel (FSMC). The complexity of the system is very high when we consider realistic FSMC models. Therefore, we propose a novel big data reinforcement learning approach in this paper. Deep reinforcement learning is an advanced reinforcement learning algorithm that uses deep $Q$ network to approximate the $Q$ value-action function. Deep reinforcement learning is used in this paper to obtain the optimal IA user selection policy in cache-enabled opportunistic IA wireless networks. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Raman and fluorescence characteristics of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering from doped superconducting cuprates

Measurements of spin excitations are essential for an understanding of spin-mediated pairing for superconductivity; and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) provides a considerable opportunity to probe high-energy spin excitations. However, whether RIXS correctly measures the collective spin excitations of doped superconducting cuprates remains under debate. Here we demonstrate distinct Raman- and fluorescence-like RIXS excitations of Bi$_{1.5}$Pb$_{0.6}$Sr$_{1.54}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ in the mid-infrared energy region. Combining photon-energy and momentum dependent RIXS measurements with theoretical calculations using exact diagonalization provides conclusive evidence that the Raman-like RIXS excitations correspond to collective spin excitations, which are magnons in the undoped Mott insulators and evolve into paramagnons in doped superconducting compounds. In contrast, the fluorescence-like shifts are due primarily to the continuum of particle-hole excitations in the charge channel. Our results show that under the proper experimental conditions RIXS indeed can be used to probe paramagnons in doped high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors.

Few-photon imaging at 1550 nm using a low-timing-jitter superconducting nanowire single-photon detector

We demonstrated a laser depth imaging system based on the time-correlated single-photon counting technique, which was incorporated with a low-jitter superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD), operated at the wavelength of 1550 nm. A sub-picosecond time-bin width was chosen for photon counting, resulting in a discrete noise of less than one/two counts for each time bin under indoor/outdoor daylight conditions, with a collection time of 50 ms. Because of the low-jitter SNSPD, the target signal histogram was significantly distinguishable, even for a fairly low retro-reflected photon flux. The depth information was determined directly by the highest bin counts, instead of using any data fitting combined with complex algorithms. Millimeter resolution depth imaging of a low-signature object was obtained, and more accurate data than that produced by the traditional Gaussian fitting method was generated. Combined with the intensity of the return photons, three-dimensional reconstruction overlaid with reflectivity data was realized.

Spectroscopic evidence for negative electronic compressibility in a quasi-three-dimensional spin-orbit correlated metal

Negative compressibility is a sign of thermodynamic instability of open or non-equilibrium systems. In quantum materials consisting of multiple mutually coupled subsystems, the compressibility of one subsystem can be negative if it is countered by positive compressibility of the others. Manifestations of this effect have so far been limited to low-dimensional dilute electron systems. Here we present evidence from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) for negative electronic compressibility (NEC) in the quasi-three-dimensional (3D) spin-orbit correlated metal (Sr1-xLax)3Ir2O7. Increased electron filling accompanies an anomalous decrease of the chemical potential, as indicated by the overall movement of the deep valence bands. Such anomaly, suggestive of NEC, is shown to be primarily driven by the lowering in energy of the conduction band as the correlated bandgap reduces. Our finding points to a distinct pathway towards an uncharted territory of NEC featuring bulk correlated metals with unique potential for applications in low-power nanoelectronics and novel metamaterials.

KONUS Beam Dynamics Design of Uranium DTL for HIAF

KONUS beam dynamics design of uranium DTL with LORASR code is presented. The 238U34+ beam, whose current is 5.0emA, is accelerated from injection energy of 0.35MeV/u to output energy of 1.3MeV/u by IH-DTL operated at 81.25MHz in HIAF project at IMP of CAS. It achieves transmission efficiency of 94.95% with the cavity length 267.8cm. Optimization aims are the reduction of emittance growth, of beam loss and of project costs. Because of the requirements of CW mode operation, the designed average acceleration gradient is about 2.48MV/m. Maximum axial filed is 10.2MV/m, meanwhile Kilpatrick breakdown field is 10.56MV/m at 81.25MHz.

Graphene nano-ribbon waveguides

Graphene as a one-atom-thick platform for infrared metamaterial plays an important role in optical science and engineering. Here we study the unique properties of some plasmonic waveguides based on graphene nano-ribbon. It is found that a graphene ribbon of finite width leads to the occurrence of coupled edge mode. The single-mode region of a single freestanding graphene ribbon is identified at a fixed frequency of 30 THz. A low-loss waveguide structure, consisting of a graphene layer, a silica buffer layer and silicon substrate is proposed to reduce the propagation loss and obtain a high figure of merit for future integration of waveguide devices. Furthermore, two coupled ribbon configurations, namely, side-side coupling and top-bottom coupling, are investigated. As a device example, a nano-ring cavity of ultra-small size is designed.

Mode Coupling in a Tapered Slow Light Waveguide

Metamaterials with simultaneous negative permittivity and negative permeability (also called left-handed materials) open new avenues to achieving unprecedented physical properties and functionality unattainable with naturally occurring materials. It has been predicted that a metamaterial slab waveguide can slow down light significantly (even to zero velocity) as the thickness of the core layer approaches a critical thickness. Here we show that coupling between the forward and backward modes becomes significant near the critical thickness due to the good matching of the wavevectors and modal profiles of the two modes. Physical explanation and impact of this coupling are given.

Quantum criticality and nodal superconductivity in the FeAs-based superconductor KFe2As2

The in-plane resistivity $ρ$ and thermal conductivity $κ$ of FeAs-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal were measured down to 50 mK. We observe non-Fermi-liquid behavior $ρ(T) \sim T^{1.5}$ at $H_{c_2}$ = 5 T, and the development of a Fermi liquid state with $ρ(T) \sim T^2$ when further increasing field. This suggests a field-induced quantum critical point, occurring at the superconducting upper critical field $H_{c_2}$. In zero field there is a large residual linear term $κ_0/T$, and the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ mimics that in d-wave cuprate superconductors. This indicates that the superconducting gaps in KFe$_2$As$_2$ have nodes, likely d-wave symmetry. Such a nodal superconductivity is attributed to the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near the quantum critical point.

Thermal conductivity study of KFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal: clear evidence for unconventional superconducting gap with nodes

The in-plane resistivity $ρ$ and thermal conductivity $κ$ of extremely overdoped KFe$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 3.0 K) single crystal were studied. It is found that $ρ\sim T^{1.5}$ at low temperature, a typical non-Fermi liquid behavior of electrons scattered by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. In zero field, we observed a large residual linear term $κ_0/T$, about one third of the normal-state value. In low magnetic fields, $κ_0/T(H)$ increases very fast. Such a behavior of $κ_0/T$ mimics the d-wave cuprate superconductors, therefore provides clear evidence for nodes in the superconducting gap of KFe$_2$As$_2$. Based on the Fermi surface topology of KFe$_2$As$_2$, it is believed that the dominant intraband pairing via antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations results in the unconventional superconducting gap with nodes.

Study of Electron Spin Resonance on single crystals $EuFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_2$

The temperature dependence of electron spin resonance (ESR) was studied in $EuFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_2 $ (x = 0.0, 0.067, 0.1, 0.2, 0.25, 0.285, 0.35, 0.4 and 0.5). The ESR spectrum of all the samples indicates that the g factor and peak-to-peak linewidth strongly depend on the temperature. Moreover, the peak-to-peak linewidth shows the Korringa behavior, indicating an exchange coupling between the conduction electrons and the $Eu^{2+}$ions. The linewidth, g factor and the integrate ESR intensity show anomalies at the temperature of the spin-density-wave (SDW). The linewidth below the SDW transition does not rely on the temperature. This gives the evidence of the gap opening at the $T_{SDW}$. The slope of the linewidth is closely associated to $T_{SDW}$and $T_C$. This exotic behavior may be related to the nesting of the Fermi surface.

Magnetism and superconductivity in single crystals $Eu_{1-x}Sr_xFe_{2-y}Co_{y}As_2$

We systematically studied the transport properties of single crystals of $Eu_{1-x}Sr_xFe_{2-y}$Co$_{y}As_2$. Co doping can suppress the spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and induces a superconducting transition, but a resistivity reentrance due to the antiferromagnetic ordering of $Eu^{2+}$ spins is observed, indicating the competition between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity. It is striking that the resistivity reentrance can be completely suppressed by external magnetic field (H) because a metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism for $Eu^{2+}$ spins is induced by magnetic field. Superconductivity without resistivity reentrance shows up by partial substitution of Eu$^{2+}$ with non-magnetic Sr$^{2+}$ to completely destroy the AFM ordering of $Eu^{2+}$ spins. These results suggest that the antiferromagnetism destroys the superconductivity, while the ferromagnetism can coexist with the superconductivity in the iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductors.

Evidence for Local Moment by Electron Spin Resonance Study on Polycrystalline LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (x=0 and 0.13)

The temperature dependence of electron spin resonance (ESR) was studied in the oxypnictide superconductors LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (x = 0.0 and 0.13). In the samples, the ESR signal indicates that the g factor and peak-to-peak linewidth strongly depend on temperature, especially at low temperatures. It indicates a strong coupling picture with existence of local moment. The dependence mentioned above gradually attenuates, and tends to saturation around room-temperature. This behavior could be ascribed to "bottleneck" effect due to coupling of local moment and itinerant electron. In addition, a Curie-Weiss like behavior is also observed in temperature dependent integral intensity for the two samples. Our results strongly support the existence of local moments in these materials while its origin is still unclear. The results also indicate strong magnetic frustration in this system, and magnetic fluctuation mechanism for superconductivity is suggested.

Random Time-Scale Invariant Diffusion and Transport Coefficients

Single particle tracking of mRNA molecules and lipid granules in living cells shows that the time averaged mean squared displacement $\overline{δ^2}$ of individual particles remains a random variable while indicating that the particle motion is subdiffusive. We investigate this type of ergodicity breaking within the continuous time random walk model and show that $\overline{δ^2}$ differs from the corresponding ensemble average. In particular we derive the distribution for the fluctuations of the random variable $\overline{δ^2}$. Similarly we quantify the response to a constant external field, revealing a generalization of the Einstein relation. Consequences for the interpretation of single molecule tracking data are discussed.

Structure of BSCCO supermodulation from ab initio calculations

We present results of density functional theory (DFT) calculation of the structural supermodulation in BSCCO-2212 structure, and show that the supermodulation is indeed a spontaneous symmetry breaking of the nominal crystal symmetry, rather than a phenomenon driven by interstitial O dopants. The structure obtained is in excellent quantitative agreement with recent x-ray studies, and reproduces several qualitative aspects of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiments as well. The primary structural modulation affecting the CuO_2 plane is found to be a buckling wave of tilted CuO_5 half-octahedra, with maximum tilt angle near the phase of the supermodulation where recent STM experiments have discovered an enhancement of the superconducting gap. We argue that the tilting of the half-octahedra and concommitant planar buckling are directly modulating the superconducting pair interaction.

Local electronic structure near oxygen dopants in BSCCO-2212: a window on the high-Tc pair mechanism?

The cuprate material BSCCO-2212 is believed to be doped by a combination of cation switching and excess oxygen. The interstitial oxygen dopants are of particular interest because scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiments have shown that they are positively correlated with the local value of the superconducting gap, and calculations suggest that the fundamental attraction between electrons is modulated locally. In this work, we use density functional theory to try to ascertain which locations in the crystal are energetically most favorable for the O dopant atoms, and how the surrounding cage of atoms deforms. Our results provide support for the identification of STM resonances at -1eV with dopant interstitial O atoms, and show how the local electronic structure is modified nearby.

Isotropic singularity in inhomogeneous brane cosmological models

We discuss the asymptotic dynamical evolution of spatially inhomogeneous brane-world cosmological models close to the initial singularity. By introducing suitable scale-invariant dependent variables and a suitable gauge, we write the evolution equations of the spatially inhomogeneous $G_{2}$ brane cosmological models with one spatial degree of freedom as a system of autonomous first-order partial differential equations. We study the system numerically, and we find that there always exists an initial singularity, which is characterized by the fact that spatial derivatives are dynamically negligible. More importantly, from the numerical analysis we conclude that there is an initial isotropic singularity in all of these spatially inhomogeneous brane cosmologies for a range of parameter values which include the physically important cases of radiation and a scalar field source. The numerical results are supported by a qualitative dynamical analysis and a calculation of the past asymptotic decay rates. Although the analysis is local in nature, the numerics indicates that the singularity is isotropic for all relevant initial conditions. Therefore this analysis, and a preliminary investigation of general inhomogeneous ($G_0$) models, indicates that it is plausible that the initial singularity is isotropic in spatially inhomogeneous brane-world cosmological models and consequently that brane cosmology naturally gives rise to a set of initial data that provide the conditions for inflation to subsequently take place.

Bianchi IX Brane-world Cosmologies

We shall investigate the asymptotic properties of the Bianchi type IX cosmological model in the Brane-world scenario. The matter content is assumed to be a combination of a perfect fluid and a minimimally coupled scalar field that is restricted to the Brane. A detailed qualitative analysis of the Bianchi type IX braneworld containing a scalar field having an exponential potential is undertaken. It is found that the Brane-Robertson Walker solution is a local source for the expanding Bianchi IX models, and if $k^2<2$ the expanding Bianchi IX models asymptote to the power-law inflationary solution. The only other local sink is the contracting Brane-Robertson Walker solution. An analysis of the Bianchi IX models with a scalar field with a general potential is discussed, and it is shown that in the case of expanding models, for physical scalar field potentials close to the initial singularity, the scalar field is effectively massless, and the solution is approximated by the Brane-Robertson Walker model.
