Non-local Control of the Kondo Effect in a Double Quantum Dot-Quantum Wire Coupled System

We have performed low-temperature transport measurements on a double quantum dot-quantum wire coupled device and demonstrated non-local control of the Kondo effect in one dot by manipulating the electronic spin states of the other. We discuss the modulation of the local density of states in the wire region due to the Fano-Kondo antiresonance, and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) exchange interaction as the mechanisms responsible for the observed features.

Magnetotransport Study of the Canted Antiferromagnetic Phase in Bilayer $ν=2$ Quantum Hall State

Magnetotransport properties are investigated in the bilayer quantum Hall state at the total filling factor $ν=2$. We measured the activation energy elaborately as a function of the total electron density and the density difference between the two layers. Our experimental data demonstrate clearly the emergence of the canted antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase between the ferromagnetic phase and the spin-singlet phase. The stability of the CAF phase is discussed by the comparison between experimental results and theoretical calculations using a Hartree-Fock approximation and an exact diagonalization study. The data reveal also an intrinsic structure of the CAF phase divided into two regions according to the dominancy between the intralayer and interlayer correlations.

Pauli spin blockade in cotunneling transport through a double quantum dot

We study spin correlation in a double quantum dot containing a few electrons in each dot (around 10). Clear current rectification with negative differential conductance is observed in the cotunneling regime, which is well explained by a Pauli spin blockade. The current feature is discussed in connection with exchange singlet-triplet splitting based on two simple models, one of which takes coherent interdot coupling and the other incoherent interdot coupling into account.

Electrical pump-and-probe study of spin singlet-triplet relaxation in a quantum dot

Spin relaxation from a triplet excited state to a singlet ground state in a semiconductor quantum dot is studied by employing an electrical pump-and-probe method. Spin relaxation occurs via cotunneling when the tunneling rate is relatively large, confirmed by a characteristic square dependence of the relaxation rate on the tunneling rate. When cotunneling is suppressed by reducing the tunneling rate, the intrinsic spin relaxation is dominated by spin-orbit interaction. We discuss a selection rule of the spin-orbit interaction based on the observed double-exponential decay of the triplet state.

Spin Degree of Freedom in the nu =1 Bilayer Electron System Investigated via Nuclear Spin Relaxation

The nuclear-spin-relaxation rate 1/T_1 has been measured in a bilayer electron system at and around total Landau level filling factor nu =1. The measured 1/T_1, which probes electron spin fluctuations, is found to increase gradually from the quantum Hall (QH) state at low fields through a phase transition to the compressible state at high fields. Furthermore, 1/T_1 in the QH state shows a small but noticeable increase away from nu =1. These results demonstrate that, as opposed to common assumption, the electron spin degree of freedom is completely frozen neither in the QH nor compressible states.

Background charge fluctuation in a GaAs quantum dot device

We investigate background charge fluctuation in a GaAs quantum dot device by measuring 1/f noise in the single-electron tunneling current through the dot. The current noise is understood as fluctuations of the confinement potential and tunneling barriers. The estimated potential fluctuation increases almost linearly with temperature, which is consistent with a simple model of the 1/f noise. We find that the fluctuation increases very slightly when electrons are injected into excited states of the quantum dot.

Simultaneous Excitation of Spins and Pseudospins in the Bilayer $ν=1$ Quantum Hall State

The tilting angular dependence of the energy gap was measured in the bilayer quantum Hall state at the Landau level filling $ν=1$ by changing the density imbalance between the two layers. The observed gap behavior shows a continuous transformation from the bilayer balanced density state to the monolayer state. Even a sample with 33 K tunneling gap shows the same activation energy anomaly reported by Murphy {\it et al.}. We discuss a possible relation between our experimental results and the quantum Hall ferromagnet of spins and pseudospins.

Shot Noise Suppression at Non-integer Conductance Plateaus in a Quantum Point Contact

We study non-equilibrium differential conductance and current fluctuations in a single quantum point contact. The two-terminal electrical transport properties -- differential conductance and shot noise -- are measured at 1.5 K as a function of the drain-source voltage and the Schottky split-gate voltage. In differential conductance measurements, conductance plateaus appear at integer multiples of $2e^2/h$ when the drain-source voltage is small, and the plateaus evolve to a fractional of $2e^2/h$ as the drain-source voltage increases. Our shot noise measurements correspondingly show that the shot noise signal is highly suppressed at both the integer and the non-integer conductance plateaus. This main feature can be understood by the induced electrostatic potential model within a single electron picture. In addition, we observe the 0.7 structure in the differential conductance and the suppressed shot noise around 0.7 ($2e^2/h$); however, the previous single-electron model cannot explain the 0.7 structure and the noise suppression, suggesting that this characteristic relates to the electron-electron interactions.

Generation of maximum spin entanglement induced by cavity field in quantum-dot systems

Equivalent-neighbor interactions of the conduction-band electron spins of quantum dots in the model of Imamoglu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 4204 (1999)] are analyzed. Analytical solution and its Schmidt decomposition are found and applied to evaluate how much the initially excited dots can be entangled to the remaining dots if all of them are initially disentangled. It is demonstrated that the perfect maximally entangled states (MES) can only be generated in the systems of up to 6 dots with a single dot initially excited. It is also shown that highly entangled states, approximating the MES with a good accuracy, can still be generated in systems of odd number of dots with almost half of them being excited. A sudden decrease of entanglement is observed by increasing the total number of dots in a system with a fixed number of excitations.

Phase Transitions in the Bilayer $ν=2/3$ Quantum Hall Effect

We measured the magnetoresistance of bilayer quantum Hall (QH) effects at the fractional filling factor $ν=2/3$ by changing the total electron density and the density difference between two layers. Three different QH states were separated by two types of phase transition: One is the spin transition and the other is the pseudospin transition. In addition, two different hystereses were detected, one of which is specific to bilayer systems. The phase transitions and the hystereses are described well by a composite fermion model extended to a bilayer system.

Electrically-Controlled Nuclear Spin Polarization and Relaxation by Quantum-Hall states

We investigate interactions between electrons and nuclear spins by using the resistance (Rxx) peak which develops near filling factor n = 2/3 as a probe. By temporarily tuning n to a different value, ntemp, with a gate, the Rxx peak is shown to relax quickly on both sides of ntemp = 1. This is due to enhanced nuclear spin relaxation by Skyrmions, and demonstrates the dominant role of nuclear spin in the transport anomaly near n = 2/3. We also observe an additional enhancement in the nuclear spin relaxation around n = 1/2 and 3/2, which suggests a Fermi sea of partially-polarized composite fermions.

Doubly Enhanced Skyrmions in $ν=2$ Bilayer Quantum Hall States

By tilting the samples in the magnetic field, we measured and compared the Skyrmion excitations in the bilayer quantum Hall (QH) state at the Landau-level filling factor $ν=2$ and in the monolayer QH state at $ν=1$. The observed number of flipped spins is $N_s=14$ in the bilayer system with a large tunneling gap, and $N_s=7$ in the bilayer system with a small tunneling gap, while it is $N_s=7$ in the monolayer system. The difference is interpreted due to the interlayer exchange interaction. Moreover, we have observed seemingly preferred numbers $N_s=14,7,1$ for the flipped spins by tilting bilayer samples.
