Orbital character variation of the Fermi surface and doping dependent changes of the dimensionality in BaFe2-xCoxAs2 from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

From a combination of high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculations, we show that BaFe2As2 possesses essentially two-dimensional electronic states, with a strong change of orbital character of two of the Gamma-centered Fermi surfaces as a function of kz. Upon Co doping, the electronic states in the vicinity of the Fermi level take on increasingly three-dimensional character. Both the orbital variation with kz and the more three-dimensional nature of the doped compounds have important consequences for the nesting conditions and thus possibly also for the appearance of antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases.

Exchange current contributions in null-plane quantum models of elastic electron deuteron scattering

We investigate exchange current contributions to elastic electron-deuteron scattering using exactly Poincaré invariant quantum mechanics with a null-plane kinematic symmetry. Our model exchange current is motivated by one-pion-exchange physics. Exact current conservation and current covariance are satisfied by using this current to compute a linearly independent set of current matrix elements. The remaining current matrix elements are generated from the independent matrix elements using the covariance and current conservation constraints. The presence of the exchange current increases the sensitivity to the choice of independent current matrix elements. Two choices of independent matrix elements that have distinct motivations lead to a good description of all of the elastic scattering observables for momentum transfers below 8 (GeV)$^2$.

The cleavage surface of the BaFe_(2-x)Co_(x)As_(2) and Fe_(y)Se_(1-x)Te_(x) superconductors: from diversity to simplicity

We elucidate the termination surface of cleaved single crystals of the BaFe_(2-x)Co_(x)As_(2) and Fe_(y)Se_(1-x)Te_(x) families of the high temperature iron based superconductors. By combining scanning tunneling microscopic data with low energy electron diffraction we prove that the termination layer of the Ba122 systems is a remnant of the Ba layer, which exhibits a complex diversity of ordered and disordered structures. The observed surface topographies and their accompanying superstructure reflections in electron diffraction depend on the cleavage temperature. In stark contrast, Fe_(y)Se_(1-x)Te_(x) possesses only a single termination structure - that of the tetragonally ordered Se_(1-x)Te_(x) layer.

3D visualization of two-phase flow in the micro-tube by a simple but effective method

The present study presents a simple but effective method for 3D visualization of the two-phase flow in the micro-tube. An isosceles right-angle prism combined with a mirror located 45^o bevel to the prism is employed to obtain synchronously the front and side views of the flow patterns with a single camera, where the locations of the prism and the micro-tube for clearly imaging should satisfy a fixed relationship which is specified in the present study. The optical design is proven successfully by the tough visualization work at the cryogenic temperature range. The image deformation due to the refraction and geometrical configuration of the test section is quantitatively investigated. It is calculated that the image is enlarged by about 20% in inner diameter compared to the real object, which is validated by the experimental results. Meanwhile, the image deformation by adding a rectangular optical correction box outside the circular tube is comparatively investigated. It is calculated that the image is reduced by about 20% in inner diameter with a rectangular optical correction box compared to the real object. The 3D re-construction process based on the two views is conducted through three steps, which shows that 3D visualization method can be easily applied for two-phase flow research in micro-scale channels and improves the measurement accuracy of some important parameters of two-phase flow such as void fraction, spatial distribution of bubbles, etc..

A high resolution, hard x-ray photoemission investigation of La_(2-2x)Sr_(1+2x)Mn_2O_7 (0.30<x<0.50): on microscopic phase separation and the surface electronic structure of a bilayered CMR manganite

Photoemission data taken with hard x-ray radiation on cleaved single crystals of the bilayered, colossal magnetoresistant manganite La_(2-2x)Sr_(1+2x)Mn_2O_7 (LSMO) with 0.30<x<0.50 are presented. Making use of the increased bulk-sensitivity upon hard x-ray excitation it is shown that the core level footprint of the electronic structure of the LSMO cleavage surface is identical to that of the bulk. Furthermore, by comparing the core level shift of the different elements as a function of doping level x, it is shown that microscopic phase separation is unlikely to occur for this particular manganite well above the Curie temperature.

Electronic structure studies of BaFe2As2 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We report high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of the electronic structure of BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which is one of the parent compounds of the Fe-pnictide superconductors. ARPES measurements have been performed at 20 K and 300 K, corresponding to the orthorhombic antiferromagnetic phase and the tetragonal paramagnetic phase, respectively. Photon energies between 30 and 175 eV and polarizations parallel and perpendicular to the scattering plane have been used. Measurements of the Fermi surface yield two hole pockets at the $Γ$-point and an electron pocket at each of the X-points. The topology of the pockets has been concluded from the dispersion of the spectral weight as a function of binding energy. Changes in the spectral weight at the Fermi level upon variation of the polarization of the incident photons yield important information on the orbital character of the states near the Fermi level. No differences in the electronic structure between 20 and 300 K could be resolved. The results are compared with density functional theory band structure calculations for the tetragonal paramagnetic phase.

Nanoscale superconducting gap variations, strong coupling signatures and lack of phase separation in optimally doped BaFe1.86Co0.14As2

We present tunneling data from optimally-doped, superconducting BaFe1.86Co0.14As2 and its parent compound, BaFe2As2. In the superconductor, clear coherence-like peaks are seen across the whole field of view, and their analysis reveals nanoscale variations in the superconducting gap value, Delta. The average magnitude of 2Delta is ~7.4 kBTC, which exceeds the BCS weak coupling value for either s- or d-wave superconductivity. The characteristic length scales of the deviations from the average gap value, and of an anti-correlation discovered between the gap magnitude and the zero bias conductance, match well with the average separation between the Co dopant ions in the superconducting FeAs planes. The tunneling spectra themselves possess a peak-dip-hump lineshape, suggestive of a coupling of the superconducting electronic system to a well-defined bosonic mode of energy 4.7 kBTC, such as the spin resonance observed recently in inelastic neutron scattering.

A high resolution, hard X-ray photoemission investigation of BaFe$_2$As$_2$: moderate influence of the surface and evidence for a low degree of Fe 3d - As 4p hybridization of the near-E$_F$ electronic states

Photoemission data taken with hard X-ray radiation on cleaved single crystals of the barium parent compound of the MFe$_2$As$_2$ pnictide high temperature superconductor family are presented. Making use of the increased bulk-sensitivity upon hard X-ray excitation, and comparing the results to data taken at conventional VUV photoemission excitation energies, it is shown that the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ cleavage surface provides an electrostatic environment that is slightly different to the bulk, most likely in the form of a modified Madelung potential. However, as the data argue against a different surface doping level, and the surface-related features in the spectra are by no means as dominating as seen in systems such as YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$, we can conclude that the itinerant, near-E$_F$ electronic states are almost unaffected by the existence of the cleavage surface. Furthermore, exploiting the strong changes in photoionisation cross section between the Fe and As states across the wide photon energy range employed, it is shown that the degree of energetic overlap between the iron 3d and arsenic 4p valence bands is particularly small at the Fermi level, which can only mean a very low degree of hybridization between the Fe 3d and As 4p states near and at E$_F$. Consequently, the itinerancy of the charge carriers in this group of materials involves mainly the Fe 3d - Fe 3d overlap integrals with at best a minor role for the Fe 3d - As 4p hopping parameters, and that the states which support superconductivity upon doping are essentially of Fe 3d character.

Magnetic and electronic Co states in layered cobaltate GdBaCo2O5.5-x

We have performed non-resonant x-ray diffraction, resonant soft and hard x-ray magnetic diffraction, soft x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements to clarify the electronic and magnetic states of the Co3+ ions in GdBaCo2O5.5. Our data are consistent with a 3+ Py Co HS state at the pyramidal sites and a 3+ Oc Co LS state at the octahedral sites. The structural distortion, with a doubling of the a axis (2ap x 2ap x 2ap cell), shows alternating elongations and contractions of the pyramids and indicates that the metal-insulator transition is associated with orbital order in the t2g orbitals of the 3+ Py Co HS state. This distortion corresponds to an alternating ordering of xz and yz orbitals along the a and c axes for the 3+ Py Co . The orbital ordering and pyramidal distortion lead to deformation of the octahedra, but the 3+ Oc Co LS state does not allow an orbital order to occur for the 3+ Oc Co ions. The soft x-ray magnetic diffraction results indicate that the magnetic moments are aligned in the ab plane but are not parallel to the crystallographic a or b axes. The orbital order and the doubling of the magnetic unit cell along the c axis support a non-collinear magnetic structure. The x-ray magnetic circular dichroism data indicate that there is a large orbital magnetic contribution to the total ordered Co moment.

Weak coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer suerconductivity in the Electron-Doped Cuprate Superconductors

We use in-plane tunneling spectroscopy to study the temperature dependence of the local superconducting gap $Δ(T)$ in electron-doped copper oxides with various $T_c$'s and Ce-doping concentrations. We show that the temperature dependence of $Δ(T)$ follows the expectation of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity, where $Δ(0)/k_{B}T_{c}\approx1.72\pm 0.15$ and $Δ(0)$ is the average superconducting gap across the Fermi surface, for all the doping levels investigated. These results suggest that the electron-doped superconducting copper oxides are weak coupling BCS superconductors.

Critical Scaling of the Magnetization and Magnetostriction in the Weak Itinerant Ferromagnet UIr

The weak itinerant ferromagnet UIr is studied by magnetization and magnetostriction measurements. Critical behavior, which surprisingly extends up to several Tesla, is observed at the Curie temperature $T_C\simeq45$ K and is analyzed using Arrott and Maxwell relations. Critical exponents are found that do not match with any of the well-known universality classes. The low-temperature magnetization $M_s\simeq0.5$ $μ_B \cong const.$ below 3 T rises towards higher fields and converges asymptotically around 50 T with the magnetization at $T_C$. From the magnetostriction and magnetization data, we extract the uniaxial pressure dependences of $T_C$, using a new method presented here, and of $M_s$. These results should serve as a basis for understanding spin fluctuations in anisotropic itinerant ferromagnets.

Non-gapped Fermi surfaces, quasiparticles and the anomalous temperature dependence of the near-$E_F$ electronic states in the CMR oxide La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ with $x=0.36$

After years of research into colossal magnetoresistant (CMR) manganites using bulk techniques, there has been a recent upsurge in experiments directly probing the electronic states at or near the surface of the bilayer CMR materials La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ using angle-resolved photoemission or scanning probe microscopy. Here we report new, temperature dependent, angle resolved photoemission data from single crystals with a doping level of $x=0.36$. The first important result is that there is no sign of a pseudogap in the charge channel of this material for temperatures below the Curie temperature $T_C$. The second important result concerns the temperature dependence of the electronic states. The temperature dependent changes in the Fermi surface spectra both at the zone face and zone diagonal regions in $k$-space indicate that the coherent quasiparticle weight disappears for temperatures significantly above $T_C$, and that the $k$-dependence of the T-induced changes in the spectra invalidate an interpretation of these data in terms of the superposition of a `universal' metallic spectrum and an insulating spectrum whose relative weight changes with temperature. In this sense, our data are not compatible with a phase separation scenario.

Superconductivity on the border of weak itinerant ferromagnetism in UCoGe

We report the coexistence of ferromagnetic order and superconductivity in UCoGe at ambient pressure. Magnetization measurements show that UCoGe is a weak ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T_{C}= 3 K and a small ordered moment $m_{0}$= 0.03 $μ_B$. Superconductivity is observed with a resistive transition temperature T_{s} = 0.8 K for the best sample. Thermal-expansion and specific-heat measurements provide solid evidence for bulk magnetism and superconductivity. The proximity to a ferromagnetic instability, the defect sensitivity of T_{s}, and the absence of Pauli limiting, suggest triplet superconductivity mediated by critical ferromagnetic fluctuations.

Enhancement of the formation of ultracold $^{85}$Rb$_2$ molecules due to resonant coupling

We have studied the effect of resonant electronic state coupling on the formation of ultracold ground-state $^{85}$Rb$_2$. Ultracold Rb$_2$ molecules are formed by photoassociation (PA) to a coupled pair of $0_u^+$ states, $0_u^+(P_{1/2})$ and $0_u^+(P_{3/2})$, in the region below the $5S+5P_{1/2}$ limit. Subsequent radiative decay produces high vibrational levels of the ground state, $X ^1Σ_g^+$. The population distribution of these $X$ state vibrational levels is monitored by resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization through the $2 ^1Σ_u^+$ state. We find that the populations of vibrational levels $v''$=112$-$116 are far larger than can be accounted for by the Franck-Condon factors for $0_u^+(P_{1/2}) \to X ^1Σ_g^+$ transitions with the $0_u^+(P_{1/2})$ state treated as a single channel. Further, the ground-state molecule population exhibits oscillatory behavior as the PA laser is tuned through a succession of $0_u^+$ state vibrational levels. Both of these effects are explained by a new calculation of transition amplitudes that includes the resonant character of the spin-orbit coupling of the two $0_u^+$ states. The resulting enhancement of more deeply bound ground-state molecule formation will be useful for future experiments on ultracold molecules.

Magnetic fluctuations in n-type high-$T_c$ superconductors reveal breakdown of fermiology

By combining experimental measurements of the quasiparticle and dynamical magnetic properties of optimally electron-doped Pr$_{0.88}$LaCe$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ with theoretical calculations we demonstrate that the conventional fermiology approach cannot possibly account for the magnetic fluctuations in these materials. In particular, we perform tunneling experiments on the very same sample for which a dynamical magnetic resonance has been reported recently and use photoemission data by others on a similar sample to characterize the fermionic quasiparticle excitations in great detail. We subsequently use this information to calculate the magnetic response within the conventional fermiology framework as applied in a large body of work for the hole-doped superconductors to find a profound disagreement between the theoretical expectations and the measurements: this approach predicts a step-like feature rather than a sharp resonance peak, it underestimates the intensity of the resonance by an order of magnitude, it suggests an unreasonable temperature dependence of the resonance, and most severely, it predicts that most of the spectral weight resides in incommensurate wings which are a key feature of the hole-doped cuprates but have never been observed in the electron-doped counterparts. Our findings strongly suggest that the magnetic fluctuations reflect the quantum-mechanical competition between antiferromagnetic and superconducting orders.

Distinct Pairing Symmetries in $Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y}$ and $La_{1.89}Sr_{0.11}CuO_{4}$ Single Crystals: Evidence from Comparative Tunnelling Measurements

We used point-contact tunnelling spectroscopy to study the superconducting pairing symmetry of electron-doped $Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y}$ (NCCO) and hole-doped $La_{1.89}Sr_{0.11}CuO_{4}$ (LSCO). Nearly identical spectra without zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) were obtained on the (110) and (100) oriented surfaces (the so-called nodal and anti-nodal directions) of NCCO. In contrast, LSCO showed a remarkable ZBCP in the nodal direction as expected from a d-wave superconductor. Detailed analysis reveals an s-wave component in the pairing symmetry of the NCCO sample with $Δ/k_BT_c=1.66$, a value remarkable close to that of a weakly coupled BCS superconductor. We argue that this s-wave component is formed at the Fermi surface pockets centered at ($\pmπ$,0) and (0,$\pmπ$) although a d-wave component may also exist.

Mixed-State Dissipation in Zero Temperature Limit in $MgB_2$ Thin Films

We have studied mixed-state dissipation in epitaxial MgB$_2$ thin films by measurements of resistive transition, current-voltage characteristics, Hall effect, and point-contact tunnelling spectrum. We found that unlike single gap superconductors with negligible vortex quantum fluctuations in which vortices are frozen at T=0 K, finite zero-temperature dissipation due to vortex motion exists in MgB$_2$ over a wide magnetic field range. This dissipation was found to be associated with proliferation of quasiparticles from the $π$-band of MgB$_2$. The result shows that the vortex fluctuations are enhanced by two-band superconductivity in MgB$_2$ and we suggest that the vortex quantum fluctuation is a possible cause of the non-vanishing zero-temperature dissipation.

Antinodal quasiparticles below and above T_Curie in the CMR oxide La_(2-2x)Sr_(1+2x)Mn_(2)O_(7) with x=0.36

In light of recent conflicting angle resolved photoemission studies on the bilayered colossal magnetoresistant (CMR) manganite La_{2-2x}Sr_{1+2x}Mn_{2}O_{7} (0.36< x< 0.40), new ARPES data are presented for x=0.36 and 0.40, showing only for the former clear quasiparticle-like features at and around the (pi, 0)-point in k-space. The electronic states are clearly renormalised, both as regards their dispersion relation and lifetime due to coupling to bosonic degrees of freedom. Importantly, both the existence of quasiparticles and their renormalisation survive well into the paramagnetic state, up to 50 K above T_Curie. This argues against strong coupling to spin modes and raises questions regarding the nature of the paramagnetic insulating phase.
