Probing the Galactic Halo with RR Lyrae Stars. II. The Substructures of the Milky Way

We identify substructures of the Galactic halo using 3,003 type $ab$ RR Lyraes (RRab) with 6D position-velocity information from the SDSS, LAMOST, and Gaia EDR3. Based on the information, we define the separation of any two of the stars in the integrals of motion space and identify substructures by utilizing the friends-of-friends algorithm. We identify members belonging to several known substructures: the Sagittarius stream, the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage (GES), the Sequoia, and the Helmi streams. In addition to these known substructures, there are three other substructures possibly associated with globular clusters NGC 5272, NGC 6656, and NGC 5024, respectively. Finally, we also find three remaining unknown substructures and one of them has large angular momentum and a mean metallicity $\rm -2.13\,dex$ which may be a new substructure. As for GES, we find that it accounts for a large part of substructures in the inner halo and the range of apocenter distance is from 10 to $34\,\rm kpc$, which suggests that the GES is mainly distributed in the inner halo. The near one-third proportion of the GES and the peak value $20\,\rm kpc$ of the apocenter distances suggest that GES could account for the break in the density profile of the Galactic halo at Galactocentric distance ${\sim}20-25\,\rm kpc$. The similarity of comparing the kinematic properties of Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage with the Hercules-Aquila Cloud and Virgo Overdensity suggests that the three substructures may have similar origins.

Form Factors and Two-Photon Exchange in High-Energy Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering

We present new precision measurements of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section for momentum transfer (Q$^2$) up to 15.75~\gevsq. Combined with existing data, these provide an improved extraction of the proton magnetic form factor at high Q$^2$ and double the range over which a longitudinal/transverse separation of the cross section can be performed. The difference between our results and polarization data agrees with that observed at lower Q$^2$ and attributed to hard two-photon exchange (TPE) effects, extending to 8~(GeV/c)$^2$ the range of Q$^2$ for which a discrepancy is established at $>$95\% confidence. We use the discrepancy to quantify the size of TPE contributions needed to explain the cross section at high Q$^2$.

Development of a low-background neutron detector array

A low-background neutron detector array was developed to measure the cross section of the $^{13}$C($α$,n)$^{16}$O reaction, which is the neutron source for the $s$-process in AGB stars, in the Gamow window ($E_{c.m.}$ = 190 $\pm$ 40 keV) at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL). The detector array consists of 24 $^{3}$He proportional counters embedded in a polyethylene cube. Due to the deep underground location and a borated polyethylene shield around the detector array, a low background of 4.5(2)/hour was achieved. The $^{51}$V(p, n)$^{51}$Cr reaction was used to determine the neutron detection efficiency of the array for neutrons with energy $E_n$ $<$ 1 MeV. Geant4 simulations, which were shown to well reproduce experimental results, were used to extrapolate the detection efficiency to higher energies for neutrons emitted in the $^{13}$C($α$,n) $^{16}$O reaction. The theoretical angular distributions of the $^{13}$C($α$,n)$^{16}$O reaction were shown to be important in estimating the uncertainties of the detection efficiency.

Insight-HXMT Detections of Hard X-ray Tails in Scorpius X-1

Using the observations of the high-energy (HE) detector of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) for Scorpius X-1 in 2018, we search for hard X-ray tails in the hard X-ray spectra in ~30-200 keV. The hard X-ray tails are found throughout the Z-track on the hardness-intensity diagram and they harden and fade away from the horizontal branch (HB), through the normal branch (NB), to the flaring branch (FB). Comparing the hard X-ray spectra between Cyg X-1 and Sco X-1, it is concluded that the hard X-ray spectrum of Cyg X-1 shows high-energy cutoff, implying a hot corona in it, but the high-energy cutoff does not reveal in the hard X-ray spectrum of Sco X-1. Jointly fitting the HE spectrum with the medium-energy and low-energy spectra of Sco X-1 in ~2-200 keV, it is suggested that the upscattering Comptonization of the neutron star (NS) emission photons by the energetic free-falling electrons onto the NS or by the hybrid electrons in the boundary layer between the NS and the accretion disk could be responsible for the hard X-ray tails of Sco X-1 on the HB and NB, but neither of the two mechanisms can be responsible for the hard X-ray tail on the FB. Some possible origins for the peculiar hard X-ray tail of FB are argued.

Direct Observation of Coherent Longitudinal and Shear Acoustic Phonons in TaAs Using Ultrafast X-ray Diffraction

Using femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction, we investigated optically excited coherent acoustic phonons in the Weyl semimetal TaAs. The low symmetry of the (112) surface probed in our experiment enables the simultaneous excitation of longitudinal and shear acoustic modes, whose dispersion closely matches our simulations. We observed an asymmetry in the spectral lineshape of the longitudinal mode that is notably absent from the shear mode, suggesting a time-dependent frequency chirp that is likely driven by photoinduced carrier diffusion. We argue on the basis of symmetry that these acoustic deformations can transiently alter the electronic structure near the Weyl points and support this with model calculations. Our study underscores the benefit of using off-axis crystal orientations when optically exciting acoustic deformations in topological semimetals, allowing one to transiently change their crystal and electronic structures.

Peculiar disk behaviors of the black hole candidate MAXI J1348-630 in the hard state observed by Insight-HXMT and Swift

We present a spectral study of the black hole candidate MAXI J1348-630 during its 2019 outburst, based on monitoring observations with Insight-HXMT and Swift. Throughout the outburst, the spectra are well fitted with power-law plus disk-blackbody components. In the soft-intermediate and soft states, we observed the canonical relation L ~ T_in^4 between disk luminosity L and peak colour temperature T_in, with a constant inner radius R_in (traditionally identified with the innermost stable circular orbit). At other stages of the outburst cycle, the behaviour is more unusual, inconsistent with the canonical outburst evolution of black hole transients. In particular, during the hard rise, the apparent inner radius is smaller than in the soft state (and increasing), and the peak colour temperature is higher (and decreasing). This anomalous behaviour is found even when we model the spectra with self-consistent Comptonization models, which take into account the up-scattering of photons from the disk component into the power-law component. To explain both those anomalous trends at the same time, we suggest that the hardening factor for the inner disk emission was larger than the canonical value of ~1.7 at the beginning of the outburst. A more physical trend of radii and temperature evolution requires a hardening factor evolving from ~3.5 at the beginning of the hard state to ~1.7 in the hard intermediate state. This could be evidence that the inner disk was in the process of condensing from the hot, optically thin medium and had not yet reached a sufficiently high optical depth for its emission spectrum to be described by the standard optically-thick disk solution.

Ultrafast Suppression of the Ferroelectric Instability in KTaO$_3$

We use an x-ray free-electron laser to study the ultrafast lattice dynamics following above band-gap photoexcitation of the incipient ferroelectric potassium-tantalate, \kto. % We use ultrafast near-UV (central wavelength 266\,nm and 50 fs pulse duration) laser light to photoexcite charge carriers across the gap and probe the ultrafast lattice dynamics by recording the x-ray diffuse intensity throughout multiple Brillouin zones using pulses from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) (central wavelength 1.3\,Å\, and $< 10$~fs pulse duration). We observe changes in the diffuse intensity that we conclude are associated with a hardening of the soft transverse optical and transverse acoustic phonon branches along $Γ$ to $X$ and $Γ$ to $M$. Using ground- and excited-state interatomic force constants from density functional theory (DFT) and assuming the phonon populations can be described by a time-dependent temperature, we fit the quasi-equilibrium thermal diffuse intensity to the experimental time-dependent intensity. We obtain the instantaneous lattice temperature and density of photoexcited charge carriers as a function of time delay. The DFT calculations demonstrate that photoexcitation transfers charge from oxygen $2p$ derived $π$-bonding orbitals to Ta $5d$ derived antibonding orbitals, further suppressing the ferroelectric instability and increasing the stability of the cubic, paraelectric structure.

Fabrication and installation of the Mu2e cryogenic distribution system

The muon-to-electron conversion (Mu2e) experiment at Fermilab will be used to search for the charged lepton flavor-violating conversion of muons to electrons in the field of an atomic nucleus. The Mu2e experiment is currently in the construction stage. The scope of this paper is the cryogenic distribution system and superconducting power leads for four superconducting solenoid magnets: Production Solenoid (PS), an Upstream and Downstream Transport Solenoids (TSu and TSd) and Detector Solenoid (DS). The design of the cryogenic distribution system and the fabrication of several sub-systems was reported previously. This paper reports on additional fabrication and installation progress that has been performed over the past two years. Lessons learned during fabrication and testing of the cryogenic distribution system components are described. In particular, the challenges and solutions implemented for aluminum welding are reported. A description of the process used to qualify the welding procedure and welders for welding the aluminium stabilized NbTi superconducting power leads is provided. Additionally, the progress made with regards to installing the power leads into the cryogenic Feedboxes is covered.

Deeply virtual Compton scattering cross section at high Bjorken $x_B$

We report high-precision measurements of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) cross section at high values of the Bjorken variable $x_B$. DVCS is sensitive to the Generalized Parton Distributions of the nucleon, which provide a three-dimensional description of its internal constituents. Using the exact analytic expression of the DVCS cross section for all possible polarization states of the initial and final electron and nucleon, and final state photon, we present the first experimental extraction of all four helicity-conserving Compton Form Factors (CFFs) of the nucleon as a function of $x_B$, while systematically including helicity flip amplitudes. In particular, the high accuracy of the present data demonstrates sensitivity to some very poorly known CFFs.

GBLinks: GNN-Based Beam Selection and Link Activation for Ultra-dense D2D mmWave Networks

In this paper, we consider the problem of joint beam selection and link activation across a set of communication pairs to effectively control the interference between communication pairs via inactivating part communication pairs in ultra-dense device-to-device (D2D) mmWave communication networks. The resulting optimization problem is formulated as an integer programming problem that is nonconvex and NP-hard. Consequently, the global optimal solution, even the local optimal solution, cannot be generally obtained. To overcome this challenge, this paper resorts to design a deep learning architecture based on graph neural network to finish the joint beam selection and link activation, with taking the network topology information into account. Meanwhile, we present an unsupervised Lagrangian dual learning framework to train the parameters of the GBLinks model. Numerical results show that the proposed GBLinks model can converges to a stable point with the number of iterations increases, in terms of the weighted sum rate. Furthermore, the GBLinks model can reach near-optimal solution through comparing with the exhaustive search scheme in small-scale ultra-dense D2D mmWave communication networks and outperforms GreedyNoSched and the SCA-based method. It also shows that the GBLinks model can generalize to varying densities and coverage regions of ultra-dense D2D mmWave communication networks.

GECAM detection of a bright type-I X-ray burst from 4U 0614+09: confirmation its spin frequency at 413 Hz

One month after launching Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM), a bright thermonuclear X-ray burst from 4U~0614+09, was observed on January 24, 2021. We report the time-resolved spectroscopy of the burst and a burst oscillation detection at 413 Hz with a fractional amplitude 3.4\% (rms). This coincides with the burst oscillation previously discovered with \textit{Swift}/BAT \citep{Strohmayer2008}, and therefore confirms the spin frequency of this source. This burst is the brightest one in the normal bursts (except the superburst) ever detected from 4U~0614+09, which leads to an upper limit of distance estimation as 3.1 kpc. The folded light curve during the burst oscillation shows a multi-peak structure, which is the first case observed during a single burst oscillation in nonpulsating sources. The multi-peak profile could be due to additional harmonics of the burst oscillation, which is corresponding to several brighter/fainter spots at the stellar surface.

An Overview on the Application of Graph Neural Networks in Wireless Networks

In recent years, with the rapid enhancement of computing power, deep learning methods have been widely applied in wireless networks and achieved impressive performance. To effectively exploit the information of graph-structured data as well as contextual information, graph neural networks (GNNs) have been introduced to address a series of optimization problems of wireless networks. In this overview, we first illustrate the construction method of wireless communication graph for various wireless networks and simply introduce the progress of several classical paradigms of GNNs. Then, several applications of GNNs in wireless networks such as resource allocation and several emerging fields, are discussed in detail. Finally, some research trends about the applications of GNNs in wireless communication systems are discussed.

Determining impact parameters of heavy-ion collisions at low-intermediate incident energies using deep learning with convolutional neural network

A deep learning based method with the convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm for determining the impact parameters is developed using the constrained molecular dynamics model simulations, focusing on the heavy-ion collisions at the low-intermediate incident energies from several ten to one hundred MeV/nucleon in which the emissions of heavy fragments with the charge numbers larger than 3 become crucial. To make the CNN applicable in the task of the impact parameter determination at the present energy range, specific improvements are made in the input selection, the CNN construction and the CNN training. It is demonstrated from the comparisons of the deep CNN method and the conventional methods with the impact parameter-sensitive observables, that the deep CNN method shows better performance for determining the impact parameters, especially leading to the capability of providing better recognition of the central collision events. With a proper consideration of the experimental filter effect in both training and testing processes to keep consistency with the actual experiments, the good performance of the deep CNN method holds, and shows significantly better in terms of predicting the impact parameters and recognizing the central collision events, compared to that of the conventional methods, demonstrating the superiority of the present deep CNN method. The deep CNN method with the consideration of the filter effect is applied in the deduction of nuclear stopping power. Higher accuracy for the stopping power deduction is achieved benefitting from the better impact parameter determination using the deep CNN method, compared to using the the conventional methods. This result reveals the importance to select a reliable impact parameter determination method in the experimental deduction of the nuclear stopping power as well as other observables.

Deep exclusive electroproduction of $π^0$ at high $Q^2$ in the quark valence regime

We report measurements of the exclusive neutral pion electroproduction cross section off protons at large values of $x_B$ (0.36, 0.48 and 0.60) and $Q^2$ (3.1 to 8.4 GeV$^2$) obtained from Jefferson Lab Hall A experiment E12-06-014. The corresponding structure functions $dσ_L/dt+εdσ_T/dt$, $dσ_{TT}/dt$, $dσ_{LT}/dt$ and $dσ_{LT'}/dt$ are extracted as a function of the proton momentum transfer $t-t_{min}$. The results suggest the amplitude for transversely polarized virtual photons continues to dominate the cross-section throughout this kinematic range. The data are well described by calculations based on transversity Generalized Parton Distributions coupled to a helicity flip Distribution Amplitude of the pion, thus providing a unique way to probe the structure of the nucleon.

Search for Gamma-Ray Bursts and Gravitational Wave Electromagnetic Counterparts with High Energy X-ray Telescope of \textit{Insight}-HXMT

The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) on-board the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (\textit{Insight}-HXMT) can serve as a wide Field of View (FOV) gamma-ray monitor with high time resolution ($μ$s) and large effective area (up to thousands cm$^2$). We developed a pipeline to search for Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), using the traditional signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) method for blind search and the coherent search method for targeted search. By taking into account the location and spectrum of the burst and the detector response, the targeted coherent search is more powerful to unveil weak and sub-threshold bursts, especially those in temporal coincidence with Gravitational Wave (GW) events. Based on the original method in literature, we further improved the coherent search to filter out false triggers caused by spikes in light curves, which are commonly seen in gamma-ray instruments (e.g. \textit{Fermi}/GBM, \textit{POLAR}). We show that our improved targeted coherent search method could eliminate almost all false triggers caused by spikes. Based on the first two years of \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE data, our targeted search recovered 40 GRBs, which were detected by either \textit{Swift}/BAT or \textit{Fermi}/GBM but too weak to be found in our blind search. With this coherent search pipeline, the GRB detection sensitivity of \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE is increased to about 1.5E-08 erg/cm$^2$ (200 keV$-$3 MeV). We also used this targeted coherent method to search \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE data for electromagnetic (EM) counterparts of LIGO-Virgo GW events (including O2 and O3a runs). However, we did not find any significant burst associated with GW events.

Phonon spectra of a two-dimensional solid dusty plasma modified by two-dimensional periodic substrates

Phonon spectra of a two-dimensional (2D) solid dusty plasma modulated by 2D square and triangular periodic substrates are investigated using Langevin dynamical simulations. The commensurability ratio, i.e., the ratio of the number of particles to the number of potential well minima, is set to 1 or 2. The resulting phonon spectra show that propagation of waves is always suppressed due to the confinement of particles by the applied 2D periodic substrates. For a commensurability ratio of 1, the spectra indicate that all particles mainly oscillate at one specific frequency, corresponding to the harmonic oscillation frequency of one single particle inside one potential well. At a commensurability ratio of 2, the substrate allows two particles to sit inside the bottom of each potential well, and the resulting longitudinal and transverse spectra exhibit four branches in total. We find that the two moderate branches come from the harmonic oscillations of one single particle and two combined particles in the potential well. The other two branches correspond to the relative motion of the two-body structure in each potential well in the radial and azimuthal directions. The difference in the spectra between the square and triangular substrates is attributed to the anisotropy of the substrates and the resulting alignment directions of the two-body structure in each potential well.

On the resistance minimum in LaAlO$_3$/Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures

In this paper we study LaAlO$_3$/Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ structures with nominally x = 0, 0.1 and different thicknesses of the Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$ layer. We observe that both systems have many properties similar to previously studied LaAlO$_3$/EuTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ and other oxide interfaces, such as the formation of a 2D electron liquid for 1 or 2 unit cells of Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$; a metal-insulator transition driven by the thickness increase of Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$ layer; the presence of an Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) when driving the systems above the Lifshitz point with a backgate voltage; and a minimum in the temperature dependence of the sheet resistance below the Lifshitz point in the one-band regime, which becomes more pronounced with increasing gate voltage. However, and notwithstanding the likely presence of magnetism in the system, we do not attribute that minimum to the Kondo effect, but rather to the properties of SrTiO$_3$ crystal and the inevitable effects of charge trapping when using back gates.
