Analyzing power in elastic scattering of 6He from polarized proton target at 71 MeV/nucleon

The vector analyzing power has been measured for the elastic scattering of neutron-rich 6He from polarized protons at 71 MeV/nucleon making use of a newly constructed solid polarized proton target operated in a low magnetic field and at high temperature. Two approaches based on local one-body potentials were applied to investigate the spin-orbit interaction between a proton and a 6He nucleus. An optical model analysis revealed that the spin-orbit potential for 6He is characterized by a shallow and long-ranged shape compared with the global systematics of stable nuclei. A semimicroscopic analysis with a alpha+n+n cluster folding model suggests that the interaction between a proton and the alpha core is essentially important in describing the p+6He elastic scattering. The data are also compared with fully microscopic analyses using non-local optical potentials based on nucleon-nucleon g-matrices.

Analyzing power for the proton elastic scattering from neutron-rich 6He nucleus

Vector analyzing power for the proton-6He elastic scattering at 71 MeV/nucleon has been measured for the first time, with a newly developed polarized proton solid target working at low magnetic field of 0.09 T. The results are found to be incompatible with a t-matrix folding model prediction. Comparisons of the data with g-matrix folding analyses clearly show that the vector analyzing power is sensitive to the nuclear structure model used in the reaction analysis. The alpha-core distribution in 6He is suggested to be a possible key to understand the nuclear structure sensitivity.

Properties of nuclear and Coulomb breakup of 8B

The dependence of breakup cross sections of 8B at 65 MeV/nucleon on the target mass number A_T is investigated by means of the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) with more reliable distorting potentials than those in the preceding study. The A_T^(1/3) scaling law of the nuclear breakup cross section is found to be satisfied only in the middle A_T region of 40 < A_T < 150. The interference between nuclear and Coulomb breakup amplitudes vanishes in very forward angle scattering, independently of the target nucleus. The truncation of the relative energy between the p and 7Be fragments slightly reduces the contribution of nuclear breakup at very forward angles, while the angular region in which the first-order perturbation theory works well does not change essentially.

Determination of S17 from 8B breakup by means of the method of continuum-discretized coupled-channels

The astrophysical factor for 7Be(p,γ)8B at zero energy, S17(0), is determined from an analysis of 208Pb(8B, p+7Be)208Pb at 52 MeV/nucleon by means of the method of continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) taking account of all nuclear and Coulomb breakup processes. The asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) method is used to extract S17(0) from the calculated breakup-cross-section. The main result of the present paper is S17(0)=20.9 +2.0/-1.9 eV b. The error consists of 8.4% experimental systematic error and the error due to the ambiguity in the s-wave p-7Be scattering length. This value of S17(0) differs from the one extracted with the first-order perturbation theory including Coulomb breakup by dipole transitions: 18.9 +/- 1.8 eV b. It turns out that the difference is due to the inclusion of the nuclear and Coulomb-quadrupole transitions and multi-step processes of all-order in the present work. The p-7Be interaction potential used in the CDCC calculation is also used in the ANC analysis of 7Be(p,γ)8B. The value of S17(0)=21.7 +0.62/-0.55 eV b obtained is consistent with the previous one obtained from a precise measurement of the p-capture reaction cross section extrapolated to zero incident energy, S17(0)=22.1 +/- 0.6 (expt) +/- 0.6 (theo) eV b, where (theo) stands for the error in the extrapolation. Thus, the agreement between the values of S17(0) obtained from direct 7Be(p,γ)8B and indirect 8B-breakup measurements is significantly improved.

Coulomb breakup effects on the elastic cross section of $^6$He+$^{209}$Bi scattering near Coulomb barrier energies

We accurately analyze the $^6$He+$^{209}$Bi scattering at 19 and 22.5 MeV near the Coulomb barrier energy, using the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) based on the $n$+$n$+$^4$He+$^{209}$Bi four-body model. The three-body breakup continuum of $^6$He is discretized by diagonalizing the internal Hamiltonian of $^6$He in a space spanned by the Gaussian basis functions. The calculated elastic and total reaction cross sections are in good agreement with the experimental data, while the CDCC calculation based on the di-neutron model of $^6$He, i.e., the $^2n$+$^{4}$He+$^{209}$Bi three-body model, does not reproduce the data.

Continuum-discretized coupled-channels method for four-body breakup reactions

Development of the method of CDCC (Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels) from the level of three-body CDCC to that of four-body CDCC is reviewed. Introduction of the pseudo-state method based on the Gaussian expansion method for discretizing the continuum states of two-body and three-body projectiles plays an essential role in the development. Furthermore, introduction of the complex-range Gaussian basis functions is important to improve the CDCC for nuclear breakup so as to accomplish that for Coulomb and nuclear breakup. A successful application of the four-body CDCC to $^6$He+$^{12}$C scattering at 18 and 229.8 MeV is reported.

Continuum-discretized coupled-channels method for four-body nuclear breakup in $^6$He+$^{12}$C scattering

We propose a fully quantum-mechanical method of treating four-body nuclear breakup processes in scattering of a projectile consisting of three constituents, by extending the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method. The three-body continuum states of the projectile are discretized by diagonalizing the internal Hamiltonian of the projectile with the Gaussian basis functions. For $^6$He+$^{12}$C scattering at 18 and 229.8 MeV, the validity of the method is tested by convergence of the elastic and breakup cross sections with respect to increasing the number of the basis functions. Effects of the four-body breakup and the Borromean structure of $^6$He on the elastic and total reaction cross sections are discussed.

Gaussian expansion approach to Coulomb breakup

An accurate treatment of Coulomb breakup reactions is presented by using both the Gaussian expansion method and the method of continuum discretized coupled channels. As $L^2$-type basis functions for describing bound- and continuum-states of a projectile, we take complex-range Gaussian functions, which form in good approximation a complete set in a large configuration space being important for Coulomb-breakup processes. Accuracy of the method is tested quantitatively for $^{8}{\rm B}+^{58}$Ni scattering at 25.8 MeV.

Polarization phenomena in hyperon-nucleon scattering

We investigate polarization observables in hyperon-nucleon scattering by decomposing scattering amplitudes into spin-space tensors, where each component describes scattering by corresponding spin-dependent interactions, so that contributions of the interactions in the observables are individually identified. In this way, for elastic scattering we find some linear combinations of the observables sensitive to particular spin-dependent interactions such as symmetric spin-orbit (LS) interactions and antisymmetric LS ones. These will be useful to criticize theoretical predictions of the interactions when the relevant observables are measured. We treat vector analyzing powers, depolarizations, and coefficients of polarization transfers and spin correlations, a part of which is numerically examined in $Σ^{+} p$ scattering as an example. Total cross sections are studied for polarized beams and targets as well as for unpolarized ones to investigate spin dependence of imaginary parts of forward scattering amplitudes.

Determination of S17 from Systematic Analysis of 8B Coulomb Dissociation

Systematic analysis of 8B Coulomb dissociation with the Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient (ANC) method is proposed to determine the astrophysical factor S17 accurately. An important advantage of the analysis is that uncertainties of the extracted S17 coming from the use of the ANC method can quantitatively be evaluated, in contrast to previous analyses using the Virtual Photon Theory (VPT). Calculation of measured spectra in dissociation experiments is done by means of the method of Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC). From the analysis of 58Ni(8B,7Be+p)58Ni at 25.8 MeV, S17=22.83 +/- 0.51(theo) +/- 2.28(expt) (eVb) is obtained; the ANC method turned out to work in this case within 1% of error. Preceding systematic analysis of experimental data at intermediate energies, we propose hybrid (HY) Coupled-Channels (CC) calculation of 8B Coulomb dissociation, which makes numerical calculation much simple, retaining its accuracy. The validity of the HY calculation is tested for 58Ni(8B,7Be+p)58Ni at 240 MeV. The ANC method combined with the HY CC calculation is shown to be a powerful technique to obtain a reliable S17.

Determination of $S_{17}$ from systematic analyses on $^8$B Coulomb breakup with the Eikonal-CDCC method

A new version of the method of Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels method (CDCC) is proposed, that is, the Eikonal-CDCC method (E-CDCC). The E-CDCC equation, for Coulomb dissociation in particular, can easily and safely be solved, since it is a first-order differential equation and contains no huge angular momentum in contrast to the CDCC one. The scattering amplitude calculated by E-CDCC has a similar form to that by CDCC. Then one can construct hybrid amplitude in an intuitive way, i.e., CDCC amplitude is adopted for a smaller angular momentum $L$ and E-CDCC one for a larger $L$ related to an impact parameter $b$. The hybrid calculation is found to perfectly reproduce the quantum mechanical result for $^{58}$Ni($^8$B,$^7$Be$+p$)$^{58}$Ni at 240 MeV, which shows its applicability to systematic analysis of $^8$B dissociation to extract the astrophysical factor $S_{17}$ with high accuracy.

New treatment of breakup continuum in the method of continuum discretized coupled channels

A new method of pseudo-state discretization is proposed for the method of continuum discretized coupled channels (CDCC) to deal with three-body breakup processes. We propose real- and complex-range Gaussian bases for the pseudo-state wave functions, and show that they form in good approximation a complete set in the configuration space which is important for breakup processes. Continuous S-matrix elements are derived with the approximate completeness from discrete ones calculated by CDCC. Accuracy of the method is tested quantitatively for two realistic examples, d+$^{58}$Ni scattering at 80 MeV and $^{6}$Li+$^{40}$Ca scattering at 156 MeV with the satisfactory results. Possibility of application of the method to four-body breakup processes is also discussed.

Central and tensor components of three-nucleon forces in low-energy proton-deuteron scattering

Contributions of three-nucleon forces (3NF) to proton-deuteron scattering observables at energies below the deuteron breakup threshold are studied by solving the Faddeev equation that includes the Coulomb interaction. At E_p=3.0 MeV, we find that the central part of a two-pion exchange 3NF removes the discrepancy between measured cross sections and the calculated ones by two-nucleon forces, and improves the agreement with T_{22} experimental data. However, the tensor part of the 3NF fails in reproducing data of the analyzing power T_{21} by giving worse agreement between the measured and the calculated. Detailed examinations of scattering amplitudes suggest that a P-wave contribution in spin quartet tensor amplitudes has unsuitable sign for reproducing the T_{21} data.

Spin observables in nucleon-deuteron scattering and three-nucleon forces

Three-nucleon forces, which compose an up-to-date subject in few-nucleon systems, provide a good account of the triton binding energy and the cross section minimum in proton-deuteron elastic scattering, while do not succeed in explaining spin observables such as the nucleon and deuteron analyzing powers, suggesting serious defects in their spin dependence. We study the spin structure of nucleon-deuteron elastic amplitudes by decomposing them into spin-space tensors and examine effects of three-nucleon forces to each component of the amplitudes obtained by solving the Faddeev equation. Assuming that the spin-scalar amplitudes dominate the others, we derive simple expressions for spin observables in the nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering. The expressions suggest that a particular combination of spin observables in the scattering provides direct information of scalar, vector, or tensor component of the three-nucleon forces. These effects are numerically investigated by the Faddeev calculation.

A complete set of total cross sections for imaginary parts of nd forward scattering amplitudes and three-nucleon force effects

In the neutron-deuteron scattering, four total cross sections are shown to form a complete set for the determination of the imaginary parts of the forward amplitudes because of the optical theorem. The amplitudes are decomposed into scalar and tensor ones in the spin space. Contributions of three-nucleon forces (3NF) to these amplitudes are studied, by the Faddeev calculation, which predicts significant tensor effects of the 3NF.

Reaction mechanism and characteristics of T_{20} in d + ^3He backward elastic scattering at intermediate energies

For backward elastic scattering of deuterons by ^3He, cross sections σand tensor analyzing power T_{20} are measured at E_d=140-270 MeV. The data are analyzed by the PWIA and by the general formula which includes virtual excitations of other channels, with the assumption of the proton transfer from ^3He to the deuteron. Using ^3He wave functions calculated by the Faddeev equation, the PWIA describes global features of the experimental data, while the virtual excitation effects are important for quantitative fits to the T_{20} data. Theoretical predictions on T_{20}, K_y^y (polarization transfer coefficient) and C_{yy} (spin correlation coefficient) are provided up to GeV energies.

Polarization observables in dp backward elastic scattering at high and intermediate energies

The tensor analyzing power $T_{20}$ and the polarization transfer coefficients $κ_0 (= 3/2 K_y^y)$ and $K_{xz}^y$ are investigated for dp backward elastic scattering by the invariant-amplitude method. Discrepancies between the conventional calculations and the experimental data on $T_{20}$ and $κ_0$ at high and intermediate energies are mostly dissolved by including imaginary parts in the amplitudes. The quantity $K_{xz}^y$ is shown to be useful in criticizing nuclear force assumptions.
