Electronic correlation in the infrared optical properties of the quasi two dimensional $κ$-type BEDT-TTF dimer system

The polarized optical reflectance spectra of the quasi two dimensional organic correlated electron system $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]$Y$, $Y =$ Br and Cl are measured in the infrared region. The former shows the superconductivity at $T_{\rm c} \simeq$ 11.6 K and the latter does the antiferromagnetic insulator transition at $T_{\rm N} \simeq$ 28 K. Both the specific molecular vibration mode $ν_{3}(a_{g})$ of the BEDT-TTF molecule and the optical conductivity hump in the mid-infrared region change correlatively at $T^{*} \simeq$ 38 K of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br, although no indication of $T^{*}$ but the insulating behaviour below $T_{\rm ins} \simeq$ 50-60 K are found in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl. The results suggest that the electron-molecular vibration coupling on the $ν_{3}(a_{g})$ mode becomes weak due to the enhancement of the itinerant nature of the carriers on the dimer of the BEDT-TTF molecules below $T^{*}$, while it does strong below $T_{\rm ins}$ because of the localized carriers on the dimer. These changes are in agreement with the reduction and the enhancement of the mid-infrared conductivity hump below $T^{*}$ and $T_{\rm ins}$, respectively, which originates from the transitions between the upper and lower Mott-Hubbard bands. The present observations demonstrate that two different metallic states of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br are regarded as {\it a correlated good metal} below $T^{*}$ including the superconducting state and {\it a half filling bad metal} above $T^{*}$. In contrast the insulating state of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl below $T_{\rm ins}$ is the Mott insulator.

muSR study of carbon-doped MgB2 superconductors

The evolution of the superconducting properties of the carbon-doped MgB2 superconductors, MgB(2-x)Cx (x= 0.02, 0.04, 0.06) have been investigated by the transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-muSR) technique. The low-temperature depolarisation rate, sigma(0) at 0.6 T which is proportional to the second moment of the field distribution of the vortex lattice decreases monotonically with increasing electron doping and decreasing Tc. In addition, the temperature dependence of sigma(T) has been analysed in terms of a two-gap model. The size of the two superconducting gaps decreases linearly as the carbon content increases, while the doping effect is more pronounced for the smaller gap related to the 3D pi-sheets of the Fermi surface.

Evidence for Insulating Behavior in the Electric Conduction of (NH$_3$)K$_3$C$_{60}$ Systems

Microwave study using cavity perturbation technique revealed that the conductivity of antiferromagnet (NH$_3$)K$_{3-x}$Rb$_x$C$_{60}$ at 200K is already 3-4 orders of magnitude smaller than those of superconductors, K$_3$C$_{60}$ and (NH$_3$)$_x$NaRb$_2$C$_{60}$, and that the antiferromagnetic compounds are {\it insulators} below 250K without metal-insulator transitions. The striking difference in the magnitude of the conductivity between these materials strongly suggests that the Mott-Hubbard transition in the ammoniated alkali fullerides is driven by a reduction of lattice symmetry from face-centered-cubic to face-centered-orthorhombic, rather than by the magnetic ordering.

Intralayer Carbon Substitution in the MgB2 Superconductor

We report that the ternary MgB2-xCx compounds adopt an isostructural AlB2-type hexagonal structure in a relatively small range of nominal carbon concentration, x<0.1. The lattice parameter a decreases almost linearly with increasing carbon content x, while the c parameter remains unchanged, indicating that carbon is exclusively substituted in the boron honeycomb layer without affecting the interlayer interactions. The superconducting transition temperature Tc, determined by magnetometry experiments, also decreases quasilinearly as a function of the carbon concentration. The structural and electronic behavior of MgB2-xCx displays a remarkable similarity with the isoelectronic Mg1-xAlxB2 despite the different substitution sites.

Pressure dependence of Tc in the MgB2 superconductor as probed by resistivity measurements

High-pressure resistivity experiments were performed on the recently discovered superconductor, MgB2. Tc decreases quasi-linearly with applied pressure to 1.4 GPa at a rate of -2.0(1) K/GPa, which is somewhat larger than that derived from recently-reported ac susceptibility measurements. The reduction of Tc is consistent with the BCS picture, in a similar way to the C60-based superconductors. Taking into account the pressure dependence of the unit cell volume, V, the volume coefficient of Tc, d(lnTc)/dV is significantly large.

Compressibility of the MgB2 Superconductor

Considerable excitement has been caused recently by the discovery that the binary boride system with stoichiometry MgB2 is superconducting at the remarkably high temperature of 39 K (1). This potentially opens the way to even higher Tc values in a new family of superconductors with unexpectedly simple composition and structure. The simplicity in the electronic and crystal structures could allow the understanding of the physics of high-Tc superconductivity without the presence of the multitude of complicated features, associated with the cuprates. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction was used to measure the isothermal compressibility of MgB2, revealing a stiff tightly-packed incompressible solid with only moderate bonding anisotropy between intra- and inter-layer directions. These results, combined with the pressure evolution of the superconducting transition temperature, Tc establish its relation to the B and Mg bonding distances over a broad range of values.

Anomalous Raman shift in the ternary fullerides with t1g states

Raman shift dependence of charge transfer is studied in the two fulleride families of AxBa3C60 (x=0,3; A=K,Rb) and KxSm2.75C60 (x=0,3.25). It is found that the Raman spectra are essentially identical to each other for all ternary fullerides, The results show a crossover point at the boundary of t1u and t1g bands for the Raman shift dependence of charge transfer. For the t1u fullerides, the Ag(2) pinch mode follows the characteristic shift of ~6.3cm-1 per elementary charge widely observed in KxC60. The two Ag modes in t1g fullerides show a complicated behavior. An anomalous Raman shift is observed in the t1g fullerides. This anomalous Raman shift of the two Ag modes could not be explained only by charge transfer.

Raman Scattering Study of Ba-doped C60 with t1g States

Raman spectra are reported for Ba doped fullerides, BaxC60(x=3,4,and 6). The lowest frequency Hg modes split into five components for Ba4C60 and Ba6C60 even at room temperature, allowing us a quantitative analysis based on the electron-phonon couping theory. For the superconducting Ba4C60, the density of states at the Fermi energy was derived as 7 eV-1, while the total value of electron-phonon coupling λwas found to be 1.0, which is comparable to that of K3C60. The tangential Ag(2) mode, which is known as a sensitive probe for the degree of charge transfer on C60 molecule, shows a remarkable shift depending on the Ba concentration, being roughly consistent with the full charge transfer from Ba to C60. An effect of hybridization between Ba and C60 πorbitals is also discussed.

Structure and properties of a novel fulleride Sm6C60

A novel fulleride Sm6C60 has been synthesized using high temperature solid state reaction. The Rietveld refinement on high resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data shows that Sm6C60 is isostructural with body-centered cubic A6C60 (A=K, Ba). Raman spectrum of Sm6C60 is similar to that of Ba6C60, and the frequencies of two Ag modes in Sm6C60 are nearly the same as that of Ba6C60, suggesting that Sm is divalent and hybridization between C60 molecules and the Sm atom could exist in Sm6C60. Resistivity measurement shows a weak T-linear behavior above 180 K, the transport at low temperature is mainly dominated by granular-metal theory.
