Ferromagnetic Type-II Weyl Semimetal in Pyrite Chromium Dioxide

Magnetic topological materials have recently drawn significant importance and interest, due to their topologically nontrivial electronic structure within spontaneous magnetic moments and band inversion. Based on first-principles calculations, we propose that chromium dioxide, in its ferromagnetic pyrite structure, can realize one pair of type-II Weyl points between the $N$th and $(N+1)$th bands, where $N$ is the total number of valence electrons per unit cell. Other Weyl points between the $(N-1)$th and $N$th bands also appear close to the Fermi level due to the complex topological electronic band structure. The symmetry analysis elucidates that the Weyl points arise from a triply-degenerate point splitting due to the mirror reflection symmetry broken in the presence of spin-orbital coupling, which is equivalent to an applied magnetic field along the direction of magnetization. The Weyl points located on the magnetic axis are protected by the three-fold rotational symmetry. The corresponding Fermi arcs projected on both (001) and (110) surfaces are calculated as well and observed clearly. This finding opens a wide range of possible experimental realizations of type-II Weyl fermions in a system with time-reversal breaking.

Topological Weyl and Node-Line Semimetals in Ferromagnetic Vanadium-Phosphorous-Oxide $β$-V$_2$OPO$_4$ Compound

We propose that the topological semimetal features can co-exist with ferromagnetic ground state in vanadium-phosphorous-oxide $β$-V$_2$OPO$_4$ compound from first-principles calculations. In this magnetic system with inversion symmetry, the direction of magnetization is able to manipulate the symmetric protected band structures from a node-line type to a Weyl one in the presence of spin-orbital-coupling. The node-line semimetal phase is protected by the mirror symmetry with the reflection-invariant plane perpendicular to magnetic order. Within mirror symmetry breaking due to the magnetization along other directions, the gapless node-line loop will degenerate to only one pair of Weyl points protected by the rotational symmetry along the magnetic axis, which are largely separated in momentum space. Such Weyl semimetal phase provides a nice candidate with the minimum number of Weyl points in a condensed matter system. The results of surface band calculations confirm the non-trivial topology of this proposed compound. This findings provide a realistic candidate for the investigation of topological semimetals with time-reversal symmetry breaking, particularly towards the realization of quantum anomalous Hall effect in Weyl semimetals.

Strongly Ideal Robust Weyl Semimetals in Cubic Symmetry with Spatial-Inversion Breaking

We show that compounds in a family that possess time-reversal symmetry and share a non-centrosymmetric cubic structure with the space group F-43m (No. 216) host robust ideal Weyl semi-metal fermions with desirable topologically protected features. The candidates in this family are compounds with different chemical formulas AB2, ABC, ABC2, and ABCD and their Fermi levels are predominantly populated by nontrivial Weyl fermions. Symmetry of the system requires that the Weyl nodes with opposite chirality are well separated in momentum space. Adjacent Weyl points have the same chirality, thus these Weyl nodes would not annihilate each other with respect to lattice perturbations. As Fermi arcs and surface states connect Weyl nodes with opposite chirality, the large separation of the latter in momentum space guarantees the appearance of very long arcs and surface states. This work demonstrates the use of system symmetry by first-principles calculations as a powerful recipe for discovering new Weyl semi-metals with attractive features whose protected fermions may be candidates of many applications.

Ferromagnetic Dirac-Nodal Semimetal Phase of Stretched Chromium Dioxide

We show by first-principles calculations that the Dirac nodal-line semimetal phase can co-exist with the ferromagnetic order at room temperature in chromium dioxide, a widely used material in magnetic tape applications, under small tensile hydrostatic strains. An ideally flat Dirac nodal ring close to the Fermi energy is placed in the reflection-invariant boundary of the Brillouin zone perpendicular to the magnetic order, and is topologically protected by the unitary mirror symmetry of the magnetic group $D_{4h}(C_{4h})$, which quantizes the corresponding Berry phase into integer multiples of $π$. The symmetry-dependent topological stability is demonstrated through showing that only the topologically protected nodal ring can persistently exist under small anisotropic stains preservingthe symmetry $D_{4h}(C_{4h})$, while the other seeming band touching points are generically gapped. Our work provides a practical platform for the investigation of novel physics and potential applications of the Dirac nodal-line and drumhead fermions, in particular those related to ferromagnetic properties

Pressure-induced Topological Node-Line Semimetals in Alkaline-Earth Hexaborides XB6 (X=Ca, Sr, Ba)

Based on first-principles calculations, we reported that external pressure can induce topological phase transition in alkaline-earth hexaborides, XB6 (X=Ca, Sr, Ba). It was revealed that XB6 is transformed from trivial semiconductors to topological node-line semimetals under moderate pressures when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. The band inversion between B px (pz) and py orbitals at X point is responsible for the formation of node-line semimetals. Three node-line rings around X point are protected by the combination of the time-reversal and spatial inversion symmetries, and the drumhead surface bands are obtained in the interiors of the projected node-line rings. When SOC is included, tiny gaps (< 4.8 meV) open at the crossing lines, and the XB6 becomes strong topological insulators with Z2 indices (1;111). As the SOC-induced gap opening is negligible, our findings thus suggest ideal real systems for experimental exploration of the fundamental physics of topological node-line semimetals.
