Constraints on sub-GeV dark matter boosted by cosmic rays from the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We present new constraints on light dark matter boosted by cosmic rays (CRDM) using the 205.4 kg day data of the CDEX-10 experiment conducted at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. The Monte Carlo simulation package CJPL\_ESS was employed to evaluate the Earth shielding effect. Several key factors have been introduced and discussed in our CRDM analysis, including the contributions from heavier CR nuclei than proton and helium, the inhomogeneity of CR distribution, and the impact of the form factor in the Earth attenuation calculation. Our result excludes the dark matter--nucleon elastic scattering cross-section region from $1.7\times 10^{-30}$ to $10^{-26}~\rm cm^2$ for dark matter of 10 keV$/c^2$ to 1 GeV$/c^2$.

Search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay of $^{76}$Ge with a Natural Broad Energy Germanium Detector

A natural broad energy germanium (BEGe) detector is operated in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) for a feasibility study of building the next generation experiment of the neutrinoless double-beta (0{$νββ$}) decay of $^{76}$Ge. The setup of the prototype facility, characteristics of the BEGe detector, background reduction methods, and data analysis are described in this paper. A background index of 6.4$\times$10$^{-3}$ counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$day) is achieved and 1.86 times lower than our previous result of the CDEX-1 detector. No signal is observed with an exposure of 186.4 kg$\cdot$day, thus a limit on the half life of $^{76}$Ge 0$νββ$ decay is set at T$_{1/2}^{0ν}$ $>$ 5.62$\times$10$^{22}$ yr at 90% C.L.. The limit corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass in the range of 4.6 $\sim$ 10.3 eV, dependent on the nuclear matrix elements.

Newly detected open clusters in the Galactic disk using Gaia EDR3

The astrometric satellite Gaia recently released part of its third data set, which provides a good opportunity to hunt for more open clusters in the Milky Way. In this work, we conduct a blind search for open clusters in the Galactic disk using a sample-based clustering search method with high spatial resolution, which is especially suited to finding hidden targets. In addition to confirming 1930 previously known open clusters and 82 known globular clusters, 704 new stellar clusters are proposed as potential open clusters at Galactic latitudes of $|$b$|$ < 20 {deg}. For each of these new open clusters, we present the coordinates, detailed astrometric parameters, and ages, as well as the radial velocity, if available. Our blind search greatly increases the number of Galactic open clusters as objects of study and shows the incompleteness of the open cluster census across our Galaxy

Studies of the Earth shielding effect to direct dark matter searches at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

Dark matter direct detection experiments mostly operate at deep underground laboratories. It is necessary to consider shielding effect of the Earth, especially for dark matter particles interacting with a large cross section. We analyzed and simulated the Earth shielding effect for dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) with a simulation package, CJPL Earth Shielding Simulation code (CJPL\_ESS), which is applicable to other underground locations. The further constraints on the $χ$-N cross section exclusion regions are derived based on the studies with CDEX experiment data.

Observation of high efficiency Betatron radiation from femtosecond petawatt laser irradiated near critical plasmas

We present an experimental demonstration of high conversion efficiency Betatron x-ray radiation from petawatt laser irradiated near critical plasmas. Direct laser acceleration serves as the dominant regime when laser pulse of ~5e20 W/cm2 intensity is focused into plasmas with electron density of 3e20 /cm3. Electron beam with a charge of ~35 nC is accelerated up to a maximum energy of 70 MeV and emit x-rays when oscillating in the laser field. The deduced energy conversion efficiency from laser to x-rays is up to 1e-4, orders of magnitude higher than other betatron regimes. Enhancement of acceleration and radiation with sharp plasma density boundary is also obtained and further interpretated with 2D particle-in-cell simulations.

The $^{59}$Fe(n, γ)$^{60}$Fe Cross Section from the Surrogate Ratio Method and Its Effect on the $^{60}$Fe Nucleosynthesis

The long-lived $^{60}$Fe (with a half-life of 2.62 Myr) is a crucial diagnostic of active nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way galaxy and in supernovae near the solar system. The neutron-capture reaction $^{59}$Fe(n,$γ$)$^{60}$Fe on $^{59}$Fe (half-life = 44.5 days) is the key reaction for the production of $^{60}$Fe in massive stars. This reaction cross section has been previously constrained by the Coulomb dissociation experiment, which offered partial constraint on the $E$1 $γ$-ray strength function but a negligible constraint on the $M$1 and $E$2 components. In this work, for the first time, we use the surrogate ratio method to experimentally determine the $^{59}$Fe(n,$γ$)$^{60}$Fe cross sections in which all the components are included. We derived a Maxwellian-averaged cross section of 27.5 $\pm$ 3.5 mb at $kT$= 30 keV and 13.4 $\pm$ 1.7 mb at $kT$= 90 keV, roughly 10 - 20% higher than previous estimates. We analyzed the impact of our new reaction rates in nucleosynthesis models of massive stars and found that uncertainties in the production of $^{60}$Fe from the $^{59}$Fe(n,$γ$)$^{60}$Fe rate are at most of 25%. We conclude that stellar physics uncertainties now play a major role in the accurate evaluation of the stellar production of $^{60}$Fe.

Evolution of the local spiral structure of the Milky Way revealed by open clusters

The structure and evolution of the spiral arms of our Milky Way are basic but long-standing questions in astronomy. In particular, the lifetime of spiral arms is still a puzzle and has not been well constrained from observations. In this work, we aim to inspect these issues using a large catalogue of open clusters. We compiled a catalogue of 3794 open clusters based on Gaia EDR3. A majority of these clusters have accurately determined parallaxes, proper motions, and radial velocities. The age parameters for these open clusters are collected from references or calculated in this work. In order to understand the nearby spiral structure and its evolution, we analysed the distributions, kinematic properties, vertical distributions, and regressed properties of subsamples of open clusters. We find evidence that the nearby spiral arms are compatible with a long-lived spiral pattern and might have remained approximately stable for the past 80 million years. In particular, the Local Arm, where our Sun is currently located, is also suggested to be long-lived in nature and probably a major arm segment of the Milky Way. The evolutionary characteristics of nearby spiral arms show that the dynamic spiral mechanism might be not prevalent for our Galaxy. Instead, density wave theory is more consistent with the observational properties of open clusters.

Study of pair production in inhomogeneous two-color electric fields using the computational quantum field theory

We first demonstrate theoretically that the computational quantum field theory is equivalent to the quantum kinetic theory for pair creation in a spatially homogeneous and time-dependent electric field, then verify numerically their equivalence for pair creation in one-dimensional time-dependent electric fields, and finally investigate detailedly the effects of the field frequency, spatial width, pulse duration, and relative phase on dynamically assisted Schwinger pair production in an inhomogeneous two-color electric field. It is found that the enhancement effect of pair creation is very sensitive to the field frequency and generally very obvious for a shorter field width, a longer pulse duration, and a relative phase of maximizing the field strength. These results can provide a significant reference for the optimal control theory of pair creation which aims to maximize the created pair yield within a given scope of field parameters.

First experimental constraints on WIMP couplings in the effective field theory framework from CDEX

We present weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search results performed using two approaches of effective field theory from the China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX), based on the data from both CDEX-1B and CDEX-10 stages. In the nonrelativistic effective field theory approach, both time-integrated and annual modulation analyses were used to set new limits for the coupling of WIMP-nucleon effective operators at 90% confidence level (C.L.) and improve over the current bounds in the low $m_χ$ region. In the chiral effective field theory approach, data from CDEX-10 were used to set an upper limit on WIMP-pion coupling at 90% C.L. We for the first time extended the limit to the $m_χ<$ 6 GeV/$c^2$ region.

Improved limits on solar axions and bosonic dark matter from the CDEX-1B experiment using the profile likelihood ratio method

We present the improved constraints on couplings of solar axions and more generic bosonic dark matter particles using 737.1 kg-days of data from the CDEX-1B experiment. The CDEX-1B experiment, located at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, primarily aims at the direct detection of weakly interacting massive particles using a p-type point-contact germanium detector. We adopt the profile likelihood ratio method for analysis of data in the presence of backgrounds. An energy threshold of 160 eV was achieved, much better than the 475 eV of CDEX-1A with an exposure of 335.6 kg-days. This significantly improves the sensitivity for the bosonic dark matter below 0.8 keV among germanium detectors. Limits are also placed on the coupling $g_{Ae} < 2.48 \times 10^{-11}$ from Compton, bremsstrahlung, atomic-recombination and de-excitation channels and $g^{eff}_{AN} \times g_{Ae} < 4.14 \times 10^{-17}$ from a $^{57}$Fe M1 transition at 90\% confidence level.

Superconductivity in Scandium Borocarbide with orbital hybridization

Exploration of superconductivity in light element compounds has drawn considerable attention because those materials can easily realize the high $T_{c}$ superconductivity, such as ${\mathrm{LnNi}}_{2}{\mathrm{B}_{2}}{\mathrm{C}}$ ($T_{c}$ =17 K), ${\mathrm{Mg}}{\mathrm{B}}_{2}$ ($T_{c}$ =39 K), and very recently super-hydrides under pressure ($T_{c}$ =250 K). Here we report the discovery of bulk superconductivity at 7.8 K in scandium borocarbide ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$ with a tetragonal lattice which structure changes based on the compound of ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{3}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ with very little B doping. Magnetization and specific heat measurements show bulk superconductivity. An upper critical field of Hc2(0) ~ 8 T is determined. Low temperature specific-heat shows that this system is a BCS fully gapped s-wave superconductor. Electronic structure calculations demonstrate that compared with ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{3}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ there are more orbital overlap and hybridization between Sc 3d electrons and 2p electrons of C-C(B)-C fragment in ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$, which form a new electric conduction path of Sc-C(B)-Sc. Those changes influence the band structure at the Fermi level and may be the reason of superconductivity in ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$.

Local spiral structure based on the Gaia EDR3 parallaxes

Context. The astrometric satellite Gaia is expected to significantly increase our knowledge as to the properties of the Milky Way. The Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides the most precise parallaxes for many OB stars, which can be used to delineate the Galactic spiral structure. Aims. We investigate the local spiral structure with the largest sample of spectroscopically confirmed young OB stars available to date, and we compare it with what was traced by the parallax measurements of masers. Methods. A sample consisting of three different groups of massive young stars, including O-B2 stars, O-B0 stars and O-type stars with parallax accuracies better than 10% was compiled and used in our analysis. Results. The local spiral structures in all four Galactic quadrants within $\approx$5 kpc of the Sun are clearly delineated in detail. The revealed Galactic spiral pattern outlines a clear sketch of nearby spiral arms, especially in the third and fourth quadrants where the maser parallax data are still absent. These O-type stars densify and extend the spiral structure constructed by using the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) maser data alone. The clumped distribution of O-type stars also indicates that the Galaxy spiral structure is inhomogeneous.

Two-fluid discrete Boltzmann model for compressible flows: based on Ellipsoidal Statistical Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook

A two-fluid Discrete Boltzmann Model(DBM) for compressible flows based on Ellipsoidal Statistical Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook(ES-BGK) is presented. The model has flexible Prandtl number or specific heat ratio. Mathematically, the model is composed of two coupled Discrete Boltzmann Equations(DBE). Each DBE describes one component of the fluid. Physically, the model is equivalent to a macroscopic fluid model based on Navier-Stokes(NS) equations, and supplemented by a coarse-grained model for thermodynamic non-equilibrium behaviors. To obtain a flexible Prandtl number, a coefficient is introduced in the ellipsoidal statistical distribution function to control the viscosity. To obtain a flexible specific heat ratio, a parameter is introduced in the energy kinetic moments to control the extra degree of freedom. For binary mixture, the correspondence between the macroscopic fluid model and the DBM may be several-to-one. Five typical benchmark tests are used to verify and validate the model. Some interesting non-equilibrium results, which are not available in the NS model or the single-fluid DBM, are presented.

First order transition in trigonal structure ${\textbf{Ca}}{\textbf{Mn}}_{2}{\textbf{P}}_{2}$

We report structural and physical properties of the single crystalline ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) results show that ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ adopts the trigonal ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Al}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$-type structure. Temperature dependent electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ measurements indicate an insulating ground state for ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ with activation energies of 40 meV and 0.64 meV for two distinct regions, respectively. Magnetization measurements show no apparent magnetic phase transition under 400 K. Different from other ${\mathrm{A}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{Pn}}_{2}$ (A = Ca, Sr, and Ba, and Pn = P, As, and Sb) compounds with the same structure, heat capacity $C_{\mathrm{p}}(T)$ and $ρ(T)$ reveal that ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ has a first-order transition at $T$ = 69.5 K and the transition temperature shifts to high temperature upon increasing pressure. The emergence of plenty of new Raman modes below the transition, clearly suggests a change in symmetry accompanying the transition. The combination of the structural, transport, thermal and magnetic measurements, points to an unusual origin of the transition.

The modified astrophysical S-factor of the ${}^{12}$C+${}^{12}$C fusion reaction at sub-barrier energies

The $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C fusion reaction plays a crucial role in stellar evolution and explosions. Its open reaction channels mainly include $α$, $p$, $n$, and ${}^{8}$Be. Despite more than a half century of efforts, large discrepancies remain among the experimental data measured using various techniques. In this work, we analyze the existing data using the statistical model. Our calculation shows: 1) the relative systematic uncertainties of the predicted branching ratios get smaller as the predicted ratios increase; 2) the total modified astrophysical S-factors (S$^*$ factors) of the $p$ and $α$ channels can each be obtained by summing the S$^*$ factors of their corresponding ground-state transitions and the characteristic $γ$ rays while taking into account the contributions of the missing channels to the latter. After applying corrections based on branching ratios predicted by the statistical model, an agreement is achieved among the different data sets at ${E}_{cm}>$4 MeV, while some discrepancies remain at lower energies suggesting the need for better measurements in the near future. We find that the recent S$^*$ factor obtained from an indirect measurement is inconsistent with the direct measurement at energies below 2.6 MeV. We recommend upper and lower limits for the ${}^{12}$C+${}^{12}$C S$^*$ factor based on the existing models. A new $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C reaction rate is also recommended.

Direct Detection Constraints on Dark Photons with CDEX-10 Experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We report constraints on the dark photon effective kinetic mixing parameter ($κ$) with data taken from two ${p}$-type point-contact germanium detectors of the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. The 90\% confidence level upper limits on $κ$ of solar dark photon from 205.4 kg-day exposure are derived, probing new parameter space with masses (${m_V}$) from 10 to 300 eV/${c^2}$ in direct detection experiments. Considering dark photon as the cosmological dark matter, limits at 90\% confidence level with ${m_V}$ from 0.1 to 4.0 keV/${c^2}$ are set from 449.6 kg-day data, with a minimum of ${\rm{κ=1.3 \times 10^{-15}}}$ at ${\rm{m_V=200\ eV/c^2}}$.

Search for Light Weakly-Interacting-Massive-Particle Dark Matter by Annual Modulation Analysis with a Point-Contact Germanium Detector at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We present results on light weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) searches with annual modulation (AM) analysis on data from a 1-kg mass $p$-type point-contact germanium detector of the CDEX-1B experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Datasets with a total live time of 3.2 yr within a 4.2 yr span are analyzed with analysis threshold of 250 eVee. Limits on WIMP-nucleus ($χ$-$N$) spin-independent cross sections as function of WIMP mass ($m_χ$) at 90\% confidence level (C.L.) are derived using the dark matter halo model. Within the context of the standard halo model, the 90\% C.L. allowed regions implied by the DAMA/LIBRA and CoGeNT AM-based analysis are excluded at $>$99.99\% and 98\% C.L., respectively. These results correspond to the best sensitivity at $m_χ$$<$6$~{\rm GeV}/c^2$ among WIMP AM measurements to date.

Boson pair production in arbitrarily polarized electric fields

The momentum spectrum and number density of created bosons for two types of arbitrarily polarized electric fields are calculated and compared with those of created fermions, employing the equal-time Feshbach-Villars-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism which is confirmed that for an uniform and time-varying electric field it is completely equivalent to the quantum Vlasov equation in scalar QED. For an elliptically polarized field, it is found that the number density of created bosons is a square root of the number density of spin-up electrons times that of spin-down ones for a circularly polarized multicycle field. Moreover, the degree of spin polarization roughly grows as the Keldysh adiabaticity parameter increases for arbitrarily polarized multicycle fields. For a field constituted of two circularly polarized fields with a time delay, it is shown that momentum vortices also exist in boson pair creation and are induced only by the orbital angular momentum of particles. However, the vortices can reproduce the quantum statistic effect due to the effect of spin of particles. These results further deepen the understanding of some significant signatures in pair production.
