Muon Spin Relaxation Studies of Magnetic-Field-Induced Effects in High-$T_{c}$ Superconductors

Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements in high transverse magnetic fields ($\parallel \hat c$) revealed strong field-induced quasi-static magnetism in the underdoped and Eu doped (La,Sr)$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ and La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$, existing well above $T_{c}$ and $T_{N}$. The susceptibility-counterpart of Cu spin polarization, derived from the muon spin relaxation rate, exhibits a divergent behavior towards $T \sim 25$ K. No field-induced magnetism was detected in overdoped La$_{1.81}$Sr$_{0.19}$CuO$_{4}$, optimally doped Bi2212, and Zn-doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$.

2D Kagome Ordering in the 3D Frustrated Spinel Li2Mn2O4

muSR experiments on the geometrically frustrated spinel oxide, Li2Mn2O4, show the development of spin correlations over a range of length scales with decreasing temperature. Increased relaxation below 150 K is consistent with the onset of spin correlations. Below 50 K, spin order on a length scale, which is long range for the muSR probe, appears abruptly in temperature, consistent with prior neutron diffraction results. The oscillations in the zero field asymmetry are analyzed using a three frequency model. By locating the muon site this is shown to be consistent with the unexpected 2D q = root 3 x root 3 structure on the Kagome planes proposed originally from neutron data. Longitudinal field data demonstrate that some spin dynamics persist even at 2 K. Thus, a very complex magnetic ground state, featuring the co-existence of long length scale 2D ordering and significant spin dynamics, is proposed. This is unusual considering the 3D topology of the Mn3+ spins in this material.

Dynamic properties of a diluted pyrochlore cooperative paramagnet (Tb_pY_{1-p})_2Ti_2O_7

Investigations of the spin dynamics of the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore (Tb_pY_{1-p})_2Ti_2O_7, using muon spin relaxation and neutron spin echo, as a function of magnetic coverage p, have been carried out. Our major finding is that paramagnetic fluctuations prevail as T->0 for all values of p, and that they are sensitive to dilution, indicating a cooperative spin motion. However, the percolation threshold p_c is not a critical point for the fluctuations. We also find that the low temperatures spectral density has a 1/f behavior, and that dilution slows down the spin fluctuations.

Condensation, excitation, pairing, and superfluid density in high-$T_{c}$ superconductors: magnetic resonance mode as a roton analogue and a possible spin-mediated pairing

To find out a primary determing factor of $T_{c}$ and a pairing mechanism in high-$T_{c}$ cuprates, we combine the muon spin relaxation results on $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superconducting carrier density / effective mass), accumulated over the last 15 years, with the results from neutron and Raman scattering, STM, specific heat, Nernst effect and ARPES measurements. We identify the neutron magnetic resonance mode as an analogue of roton minimum in the superfluid $^{4}$He, and argue that $n_{s}/m^{*}$ and the resonance mode energy $\hbarω_{res}$ play a primary role in determining $T_{c}$ in the underdoped region. We propose a picture that roton-like excitations in the cuprates appear as a coupled mode, which has the resonance mode for spin and charge responses at different momentum transfers but the same energy transfers, as detected respectively, by the neutron S=1 mode and the Raman S=0 A1$_{g}$ mode. We shall call this as the ``hybrid spin/charge roton''. After discussing the role of dimensionality in condensation, we propose a generic phase diagram of the cuprates with spatial phase separation in the overdoped region as a special case of the BE-BCS crossover conjecture where the superconducting coupling is lost rapidly in the overdoped region. Using a microscopic model of charge motion resonating with antiferomagnetic spin fluctuations, we propose a possibility that the hybrid spin/charge roton and higher-energy spin fluctuations mediate the superconducting pairing. In this model, the resonance modes can be viewed as a meson-analogue and the ``dome'' shape of the phase diagram can be understood as a natural consequence of departure from the competing Mott insulator ground state via carrier doping.

Site-Dilution in quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnet Sr2(Cu1-xPdx)O3: reduction of Neel Temperature and spatial distribution of ordered moment sizes

We investigate the Neel temperature of Sr2CuO3 as a function of the site dilution at the Cu (S=1/2) sites with Pd (S=0), utilizing the muon spin relaxation (muSR) technique. The Neel temperature, which is Tn=5.4K for the undoped system, becomes significantly reduced for less than one percent of doping Pd, giving a support for the previous proposal for the good one-dimensionality. The Pd concentration dependence of the Neel temperature is compared with a recent theoretical study (S. Eggert, I. Affleck and M.D.P. Horton, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 47202 (2002)) of weakly coupled one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains of S=1/2 spins, and a quantitative agreement is found. The inhomogeneity of the ordered moment sizes is characterized by the muSR time spectra. We propose a model that the ordered moment size recovers away from the dopant S=0 sites with a recovery length of ξ= 150-200 sites. The origin of the finite recovery length ξfor the gapless S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chain is compared to the estimate based on the effective staggered magnetic field from the neighboring chains.

Unconventional superconductivity in Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$1.3D$_{2}$O and proximity to a magnetically ordered phase

Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on the new layered cobalt oxide superconductor Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$1.3H$_{2}$O and its parent, non-superconducting compounds, have revealed unconventional nature of superconductivity through: (1) a small superfluid energy which implies a surprisingly high effective mass of the charge carriers, approximately 100 times the bare electron mass; (2) the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ scaling with the superfluid energy following the correlations found in high-$T_{c}$ cuprate and some other two-dimensional superconductors; (3) an anisotropic pairing without broken time-reversal symmetry; and (4) the proximity of a magnetically ordered insulating phase at Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_{2}$ below $T_{N}$ = 53 K.

Expansion of Vortex Cores by Strong Electronic Correlation in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at Low Magnetic Induction

The vortex core radius \rv, defined as the peak position of the supercurrent around the vortex, has been determined by muon spin rotation measurements in the mixed state of \lscox for $x=0.13$, 0.15, and 0.19. At lower doping (x=0.13 and 0.15), \rv(T) increases with decreasing temperature T, which is opposite to the behavior predicted by the conventional theory. Moreover, \rv(T\to0) is significantly larger than the Ginsburg-Landau coherence length determined by the upper critical field, and shows a clear tendency to decrease with increasing the doping x. These features can be qualitatively reproduced in a microscopic model involving antiferromagnetic electronic correlations.

Two dimensional nature of superconductivity in intercalated layered systems Li$_{x}$HfNCl and Li$_{x}$ZrNCl: muon spin relaxation and magnetization measurements

We report muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and magnetization measurements, together with synthesis and characterization, of the Li-intercalated layered superconductors Li$_{x}$HfNCl and Li$_{x}$ZrNCl with/without co-intercalation of THF (tetrahydrofuran) or PC (propylene carbonate). The 3-dimensional (3-d) superfluid density $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superconducting carrier density / effective mass), as well as the two dimensional superfluid density $n_{s2d}/m^{*}_{ab}$ (2-dimensional (2-d) area density of superconducting carriers / ab-plane effective mass), have been derived from the $μ$SR results of the magnetic-field penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ observed with external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the 2-d honeycomb layer of HfN / ZrN. In a plot of $T_{c}$ versus $n_{s2d}/m^{*}_{ab}$, most of the results lie close to the linear relationship found for underdoped high-$T_{c}$ cuprate (HTSC) and layered organic BEDT superconductors. In Li$_{x}$ZrNCl without THF intercalation, the superfluid density and $T_{c}$ for $x$ = 0.17 and 0.4 do not show much difference, reminiscent of $μ$SR results for some overdoped HTSC systems. Together with the absence of dependence of $T_{c}$ on average interlayer distance among ZrN / HfN layers, these results suggest that the 2-d superfluid density $n_{s2d}/m^{*}_{ab}$ is a dominant determining factor for $T_{c}$ in the intercalated nitride-chloride systems. We also report $μ$SR and magnetization results on depinning of flux vortices, and the magnetization results for the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ and the penetration depth $λ$. Reasonable agreement was obtained between $μ$SR and magnetization estimates of $λ$. We discuss the two dimensional nature of superconductivity in the nitride-chloride systems based on these results.

Muon Spin Relaxation and Susceptibility Studies of Pure and Doped Spin 1/2 Kagomé-like system (Cu$_x$Zn$_{1-x}$)$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_7$(OH)$_{2}$ 2H$_2$O

Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been performed on the pure and diluted spin 1/2 kagomé system (Cu$_x$Zn$_{1-x}$)$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_7$(OH)$_{2}$ 2H$_2$O. In the pure $x=1$ system we found a slowing down of Cu spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature towards $T \sim 1$ K, followed by slow and nearly temperature-independent spin fluctuations persisting down to $T$ = 50 mK, indicative of quantum fluctuations. No indication of static spin freezing was detected in either of the pure ($x$=1.0) or diluted samples. The observed magnitude of fluctuating fields indicates that the slow spin fluctuations represent an intrinsic property of kagomé network rather than impurity spins.

Superfluid density of high-Tc cuprate systems: implication on condensation mechanisms, heterogeneity and phase diagram

Extensive muon spin relaxation measurements have been performed to determine the magnetic field penetration depth in high-Tc cuprate superconductors with simple hole doping, Zn-doping, overdoping, and formation of static SDW nano islands. System dependence of $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superconducting carrier density / effective mass) reveals universal correlations between Tc and $n_{s}/m^{*}$ in all these cases with / without perturbation. Evidence for spontaneous and microscopic phase separation was obtained in the cases with strong perturbation, i.e., Zn-doping. overdoping and SDW nano-islands. The length scale of this heterogeneity is shown to be comparable to the in-plance coherence length. We discuss implications of these results on condensation mechanisms of HTSC systems, resorting to an analogy with He films, on regular and porous media, reminding essential features of Bose-Einstein, BCS and Kosterlitz-Thouless condensation/transition in 2-d and 3-d systems, and comparing models of BE-BCS crossover and phase fluctuations. We propose a new phase diagram for HTSC systems based on distinction between pair formation and superconducting phase fluctuations in the pseudogap region and spontaneous phase separation in the overdoped region. We also remind anomaly in BEDT and A3C60 systems similar to that in overdoped cuprates, seen in the evolution from superconducting to metallic ground state.

Muon spin relaxation studies of incommensurate magnetism and superconductivity in stage-4 La$_{2}$CuO$_{4.11}$ and La$_{1.88}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_{4}$

This paper reports muon spin relaxation (MuSR) measurements of two single crystals of the title high-Tc cuprate systems where static incommensurate magnetism and superconductivity coexist. By zero-field MuSR measurements and subsequent analyses with simulations, we show that (1) the maximum ordered Cu moment size (0.36 Bohr magneton) and local spin structure are identical to those in prototypical stripe spin systems with the 1/8 hole concentration; (2) the static magnetism is confined to less than a half of the volume of the sample, and (3) regions with static magnetism form nano-scale islands with the size comparable to the in-plane superconducting coherence length. By transverse-field MuSR measurements, we show that Tc of these systems is related to the superfluid density, in the same way as observed in cuprate systems without static magnetism. We discuss a heuristic model involving percolation of these nanoscale islands with static magnetism as a possible picture to reconcile heterogeneity found by the present MuSR study and long-range spin correlations found by neutron scattering.

Microscopic phase separation in the overdoped region of high-Tc cuprate superconductors

We propose a phenomenological model for high-$T_{c}$ superconductors (HTSC) assuming: (1) a microscopic phase separation between superconducting and normal-metal areas in the overdoped region; and (2) existence of a homogeneous superconducting phase only below the pseudo-gap $T^{*}$ line, which shows a sharp reduction towards $T^{*}\sim 0$ at a mildly overdoped critical concentration $x_{c}$. This model explains anomalous doping and temperature dependences of $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superconducting carrier density / effective mass) observed in several overdoped HTSC systems. We point out an analogy to superfluid $^{4}$He/$^{3}$He films, and discuss an energetic origin of microscopic phase separation.

What can we learn from comparison between cuprates and He films ? : phase separation and fluctuating superfluidity

In the underdoped, overdoped, Zn-doped or stripe-forming regions of high-$T_{c}$ cuprate superconductors (HTSC), the superfluid density $n_{s}/m^{*}$ at $T\to 0$ shows universal correlations with $T_{c}$. Similar strong correlations exist between 2-dimensional superfluid density and superfluid transition temperature in thin films of $^{4}$He in non-porous or porous media, and $^{4}$He/$^{3}$He film adsorbed on porous media. Based on analogy between HTSC and He film systems, we propose a model for cuprates where: (1) the overdoped region is characterized by a phase separation similar to $^{4}$He/$^{3}$He; and (2) pair (boson) formation and fluctuating superconductivity occur at separate temperatures above $T_{c}$ in the underdoped region.

Muon Spin Relaxation Study of (La, Ca)MnO3

We report predominantly zero field muon spin relaxation measurements in a series of Ca-doped LaMnO_3 compounds which includes the colossal magnetoresistive manganites. Our principal result is a systematic study of the spin-lattice relaxation rates 1/T_1 and magnetic order parameters in the series La_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3, x = 0.0, 0.06, 0.18, 0.33, 0.67 and 1.0. In LaMnO_3 and CaMnO_3 we find very narrow critical regions near the Neel temperatures T_N and temperature independent 1/T_1 values above T_N. From the 1/T_1 in LaMnO_3 we derive an exchange integral J = 0.83 meV which is consistent with the mean field expression for T_N. All of the doped manganites except CaMnO_3 display anomalously slow, spatially inhomogeneous spin-lattice relaxation below their ordering temperatures. In the ferromagnetic (FM) insulating La_{0.82}Ca_{0.18}MnO_3 and ferromagnetic conducting La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3 systems we show that there exists a bi-modal distribution of \muSR rates λ_f and λ_s associated with relatively 'fast' and 'slow' Mn fluctuation rates, respectively. A physical picture is hypothesized for these FM phases in which the fast Mn rates are due to overdamped spin waves characteristic of a disordered FM, and the slower Mn relaxation rates derive from distinct, relatively insulating regions in the sample. Finally, likely muon sites are identified, and evidence for muon diffusion in these materials is discussed.

Magnetic dilution in the geometrically frustrated SrCr$_{9p}$Ga$_{12-9p}$O$_{19}$ and the role of local dynamics: a $μ$SR study

We investigate the spin dynamics of SrCr$_{9p}$Ga$_{12-9p}$O$_{19}$ for p below and above the percolation threshold p_c using muon spin relaxation. Our major findings are: (I) At T->0 the relaxation rate is T independent and proportional to p^3, (II) the slowing down of spin fluctuation is activated with an energy U which is also a linear function of p^3 and lim_{p-> 0}U = 8 K; this energy scale could stem only from a single ion anisotropy, and (III) the p dependence of the dynamical properties is identical below and above p_c, indicating that they are controlled by local excitation.

Muon Spin Relaxation and Nonmagnetic Kondo State in PrInAg_2

Muon spin relaxation experiments have been carried out in the Kondo compound PrInAg_2. The zero-field muon relaxation rate is found to be independent of temperature between 0.1 and 10 K, which rules out a magnetic origin (spin freezing or a conventional Kondo effect) for the previously-observed specific heat anomaly at \sim0.5 K. The low-temperature muon relaxation is quantitatively consistent with nuclear magnetism including hyperfine enhancement of the ^{141}Pr nuclear moment. This is strong evidence against a Pr^{3+} electronic magnetic moment, and for the Γ_3 crystalline-electric-field-split ground state required for a nonmagnetic route to heavy-electron behavior. The data imply the existence of an exchange interaction between neighboring Pr^{3+} ions of the order of 0.2 K in temperature units, which should be taken into account in a complete theory of a nonmagnetic Kondo effect in PrInAg_2.

Susceptibility inhomogeneity and non-Fermi liquid behavior in nominally ordered UCu_4Pd

Muon spin rotation experiments on a stoichiometric sample of the non-Fermi liquid (NFL) heavy-fermion compound UCu_4Pd, in which recent neutron Bragg scattering measurements are consistent with an ordered structure, indicate that the U-ion susceptibility is strongly inhomogeneous at low temperatures. This suggests that residual disorder dominates NFL behavior. The data also indicate a short correlation length (\lesssim 1 lattice spacing) for this inhomogeneity and a rapid low-temperature U-moment relaxation rate (\gtrsim 10^{12} s^{-1}), which constrain cluster-based models of NFL behavior.

Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking Superconductivity in Sr2RuO4

We report muon spin relaxation measurements on the superconductor Sr2RuO4 that reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature: the appearance of such a field indicates that the superconducting state in this material is characterized by the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. These results, combined with other symmetry considerations, suggest that superconductivity in Sr2RuO4 is of p-wave (odd-parity) type, analogous to superfluid 3He.
